This week's One Room Challenge was all about building an easy feature wall out of wood slats! This is the centerpiece of the whole bathroom and turned out so amazing! I show you how we ripped boards down to size to save a ton of money and all the mistakes I made to help you DIY this project yourself!

Do you prefer these skinny wall slats or a chunkier version?
The chunkier ones are visually more appealing along with staining them it would be less work also because they are thicker.
I prefer the skinny version I did.
@@Zeeangelofdeath you can use this method with whichever size slat you prefer
Looks sooooo good!
Oh thank you so much! I love it :)
Looks great. Best to store wood flat on floor stacked together to prevent warping or slow it down. You did a fantastic job.
Thank you!! That’s the bad part, it was all stored on the garage floor but the temperatures were just so intense that it didn’t matter 😭
For how long?
Good Job. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Have this as a ski garage project to do for a wall, so thanks for the video ideas, hints and warnings. I absolutely hate ripping boards on my table saw. It is so dangerous as very easy to get kickback, especially with thin stock or narrow pieces and no riving knife on mine. I don't wear gloves either as you can catch a glove in the saw and it pulls your hand in. I like the dark paint idea in behind. Option of getting pre-made panels is incredibly expensive
looks fantastic, you are really handy!
Ah thanks so much!
This came out beautiful! I am wanting to do something similar in my home. The what not to do tips were really helpful. Thank you for sharing!
Sasha In Joy im so glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching 😊
Great video
I love it..
Thanks so much!
worth watching, will do the same in lounge
Thank you! I hope yours turns out great!
That looks soooooo good! Since you have installed this for awhile now. Have the slats held up well? Any warping ?
It’s held up really well actually! It looks the same as the first day I put it up so I have no complaints!
Put a screw part way through the spacer, so you have something easier to grab when you need it back out.
Thats a great idea!
Love this so much! Are you nailing into studs? Or using nails long enough to go through slat and just hit drywall?
Thanks! I used a brad nailer to secure to drywall mostly but also to hit the stud. Studs aren’t along the whole wall so we cris crossed them, as explained in more detail in the video. Thanks for the comment!
Really helpful. Doing it for the first time. Wanted to understand if these slats can directly be done on the gypsum wall.
Yes it can be attached directly!
Just saying from own experience, Dont hold your hand so close to The Gun when shooting, can very easy turn 180 or 360 degrees when hitting something Hard
Thanks!
I like your videos.
Thanks so much!
Great video, did you use a half inch spacer?
Rory Noir I used a very specific measurement to make it fit on my wall. I can’t remember exactly but I detail it in the blog!
is it also possible to be installed on concrete walls?
I’m sure there’s a way, probably to attach it all to a piece of plywood the size of the wall and screwing that into the concrete.
Looks beautiful altho' I think you should have used a spacer! I see areas where they boards don't look spaced evenly. Also, I would recommend those who do this should use a level!
I actually did use a spacer and a level. The spot where I ended the boards had some larger gaps because of a margin or error with cutting all the slats. Plus some of the boards warped and created some issues there too.
Hi! Did you find that the spots without a stud attach differently/not as secure?
They’re definitely a little more difficult to make sure those spots are secure but you can angle the brad nails toward each other on the piece of wood that isn’t on a stud so they secure themselves. I briefly show how to do this in the video as well 😊
@@olivegreyavenue Thank you!
@@aboutstephsstyle anytime!
Ive priced up doing it your way and its the same accept its actually alot more work, ive since used compound between tape and painted with a watery acrylic and it is not only easier its actually most cost effective
The same as what?
Just found your channel and subscribed! I love the slat wall. I'm lazy so would it be possible to nail the slats on the sides so you won't be able to see the nail head or have to fill them?
I’m glad you’re here! You might be able to do some on the side but I wouldn’t say you could do all of them because I think you’d have an issue with getting them in completely and doing it on just one side as you went would not be able to secure it to the wall completely. You don’t HAVE to wood fill the holes but it looks better if you do. They do have wood filler that you don’t have to sand and that would save a step!
@@olivegreyavenue Thank you!
Beautiful . Would you possibly share the dimensions of the individual slat and what wood type and size did you buy and cut. This would help me immensley for a DIYer like me
The slat width will depend on your wall. Mine was about 3/4” so that it would fit the wall properly. I bought yellow pine wood and I believe I cut it down from a 1x8
Is it possible to directly clad a wood on bare wall without any channels??
We actually did have portions where we attach slats to just dry wall and not studs. To hold them up we used 2 brad nails going in opposite directions horizontally. This creates a V out of the wood and as it slits it creates a kind of spring holding it back. Thanks for the question!
I have a very tiny living room and I wanted even the other side of my wall have a wooden panel I like it.Thank you for your great idea(Philippines) but watching you here in Lagos Nigeria 👍
Thanks for watching! I hope it turns out well for you!
where did you buy the wood?!
I just bought it at my local Home Depot.
What size gauge brad nailer was used?
I believe it’s 18 gauge!
If this is a outerwall, it could become moldy. Is that right ?
What do you mean?
I have a question how small are the cuts?
I customized them to the size of my wall. Taking the width of the wall divided by approximate size of one slat and one gap.
Did you vanish the wood?
Good question! The plan was actually to stain these but I got them up on the wall and loved them so they are completely raw wood! If this was a bathroom with a shower or bath, I wouldn’t have left them raw but there isn’t much moisture in this room.
maybe add underlayment to studs in existing wall then add slats for a stronger hold? Just troubleshooting
Ya did good though!
Yes, you can definitely do that and that’s a great suggestion but for our room, we felt like it was fine without the extra support and it’s held up wonderfully almost a year later!
@@olivegreyavenue awesome! I was thinking about my comment last night and believe that CA Glue would be the best. It's clear and sticks to anything. Thanks for the inspiration!
@@thejoshthat thanks for watching and commenting!
What gauge nails did you use? Do you see noticeable nails?
Believe it was 18 gauge and no, I wood filled the holes so I don’t see any!
What brand & color is your green paint
It’s Sherwin Williams Coriander and Olive 😊
did you ever stain/paint it?
No I left it raw wood!
How will you know if you won't hit the wirings?
There weren’t any outlets or wiring in this wall specifically but wiring should run against the drywall, it’s supposed to run through the framing.
New supporter here....bringing the best present to your home...hope to see you around at my place too...stay safe stay con god bless
will of 'D' thank you for following along!
Are you nailing into a brick or plasterboard wall?
Arnold M there are wood studs and Sheetrock behind the wood slat wall.
Your slats would have likely warped anyway because they were probably not dried appropriately. Most big box store wood will do this because it is too green for this type of use
Nope, it’s been 2 years and not one a budged 👌🏻
Its looking nice and you are so beautiful dear.
How do u clean the dust in it over time?
There’s not a lot of dust collecting in here since they’re vertical slats, not horizontal but you can clean in between with a vacuum like I did to clean the saw dust after sanding! Thanks for the comment.
@@olivegreyavenue It was the first question my mum asked me after I shared your video with her
It is a beautiful and simplistic design in my opinion but in her book it’s a big no cleaning-wise🤣
@@Boshek2019 It would cost more but you could add extra slats in between, having a combo of 1x1 and 3/4 x 3/4 slats. Paint the 3/4" with your darker color. Then attach them right next to each other, alternating them, with no spacer needed in between. That way there's even less space for dust to get in between the slats. You can also sand them smooth and use either a clear polyurethane coating or whatever paint color you want. Then wood won't be rough or splintery if you go in to wipe them, dust will stick less, and the coatings will help keep the wood from warping due to humidity over time.
What’s the name of the colour on the wall?
It’s called coriander and olive
Thank you
I got it! Are you on Instagram I’d like to share with you what it looks like
@@squintbynae4509 yes, instagram.com/Olivegreyavenue
Hows the warpage? Pine,Spruce warp mania!!!
There was definitely some warp! A premium pine or poplar wouldn’t warp as much but we tried to bend them into place which mostly worked.
@@olivegreyavenue Yes I agree but sadly the ONLY way to avoid alot of warpage is hardwood The expensive stuff? Oak Maple etc...Thanks for your response
@@MS-rs8le definitely true! Thanks for commenting and watching!
Great job looks great, Ps America really needs to go metric 🤭
Thanks! Metric makes more sense but I doubt that’ll happen any time soon!
No finish on the wood?
Nope no finish!
07:11 so beauty
should have used glue/adhesive.
theandroids I actually started with construction adhesive and because the strips are so thin, it squished out of the sides. So I just used brad nails criss-crossing so they hold but it also makes the wall much easier to change in the future without major damage to the wall. Thanks for the comment!
@@olivegreyavenue I see. Thanks for the reply.
Girlz just gotta make a slatwall that cannot hold any hangers. Guyz like the horizontal version that has the straight lines for attractiveness but also works like improved pegboard.
You can definitely do this design in a vertical or horizontal pattern! It is for decoration as it’s not load bearing.
... and in a wall that isn't perfectly level, or vertical even ..... ?
Correct, that’s always a challenge since there are no walls that are perfect. Some are wonkier than others and thankfully ours wasn’t bad! Thanks for watching 🙂
Could have just used a screw or two on the divider for a better grip.. 😅
Could have and should have but didn’t 🥴
I would recommend not using gloves while using a table saw it can end really dangerous
Thanks!
100% do not use gloves
All other videos on UA-cam I clicked in has audio, except for this one. Hm...
Oh that’s no good, there’s definitely some audio!
Cheaper to cut the 1x6's into 3/4" slats then to buy them pre-cut? I guess someone forgot to factor in the cost of the table saw.
Yes it is much cheaper! There are lots of affordable table saws and if you use it more than a couple times, it pays for itself! Ours was about $100 and has probably saved us ten-fold.
You are so cute..i just watching you not the work you doing
