Been an ardent Opera follower, wish I could sing myself. Alas. I have the gift of understanding the heights as well as the depths of emotion evoked by composers. The creators of these masterpieces. This one such beautiful opera, especially Act IV. I took long to embarking on appreciating Wagner. I have no regrets, for I think with my age I have come to appreciate Wagner, unsullied. Great Composer, period.
Supreme artists. Time stands still. It's unusual to have one singer portray both Cassandra and Dido. In recent years, I think only Deborah Polaski has taken on that challenge. The older I get the more I think Troyens is one of greatest achievements in opera, with more depth and honesty than anything by Wagner.
Dave Glo Especially poignant, now with the announcement of Vicker's death, and more so for me in that I was at this performance. You know that Ludwig was ill, and that is why Verrett sang both roles-there is no tradition for doing it. I fell in love with Troyens that night, and it has been one of my favorites sincethen. I also think it is one of the greatest achievements in opera, but that has never diminished my admiration for Wagner. There is Les Toyens, now recognized for it's own greatness, and there is Wagner with his massive accomplishment which in my opinion has more than enough "honesty and depth.'" You can appreciate both-as I do.
Verrett is fine here but I am still looking for the Ludwig/Vickers version of this music which, for me, is the most beautiful love duet in all of opera & superior personally for me to Wagner in TRISTAN & any love music in Italian opera with the exception of the first Desdemona/Otello duet.

What does Wagner has to do with this?
Vickers and Veasey for me,
