New Machine Day - 1960 Cincinnati Toolmaster 1b Vertical Knee Mill - acquired and moved.

- I was looking to find a "ready to go" knee mill to expand my machining capabilities. A friend told me about this mill he had found, which was proced to move and needed to move fast. The mill was located nearby in a packed quonset hut, covered in dust and dirt. At first glance it looked in bad shape, but looking at it a little more closely suggested that maybe it was a lucky barn find.
Watch the video to see the machine moved in, given a clean down and to get a general look over. There are not many of this type of mill on UA-cam, so something a little bit different.
NOTE: My attempts at rigging - forced by time and budget constraints should be looked upon with disdain. The only inspiration you should take from that is to hire a professional for your own moving needs. Moving heavy machinery safely takes skill - and is not to be undertaken lightly. SAFETY FIRST!

Great find, Stuart. That's a proper milling machine.
Congratulations on the 1000th and 1 ton of steel that enriches your workshop.
I would like that too.
Greetings Michael
Thank you Michael!
999 while I was watching. You can't get closer :)
And that's a very nice toy you've got there. That will be fun to play with.
Thank you very much! Your help in getting over this first milestone is greatly appreciated!
Good looking mill for spending a good part of it's life in a dirty hut. You don't see the Cincy mills out there in the wild very often. Another You Tuber Steve Watkins in Texas was working on the same mill and mentioned how difficult it was to find replacement parts. It does not sound like you will need anything major to get it into service so that is good.
Hey thanks for looking in! I did look at some of Steve Watkins videos. Cool guy with a wealth of knowledge. Although spares aren't readily available it looks like very worst case I should be able to make anything needed (a few parts in the pulley drive in the head). Table all seems solid enough - some wear on leadscrews but not at the end of its life yet. Overall I think I can get good service out of it. Kind of interesting to have something a bit different.
You’ve made the 1K well done 😀 always good to have a new machine in the shed
Thanks Julia! Absolutely right. Now deciding what machine to go after next. 🧐😁
great mill Stuart, well done on the 1000 subs👍👍👍👍👍👍

Kev
Cheers Kev! Appreciate your help getting my channel in front of people!
looking forward to you repair video of the knee mill
Got a couple of good ones coming. 👍👍
Very nice find and addition to the shop. Will be quite useful I’m sure. Congrats on the 1K subscribers, keep it going!
Thanks Ed! Appreciate you looking in as always. Hope you are well!
Stuart, Congratulations on reaching 1000 subscribers, and on your new Mill. I am looking forward to seeing it in operation on your future videos and on your project builds (And maybe in person on a future visit). I have been seeing more and more of your stickers appearing on a lot of the channels I subscribe to, and have heard a couple of shout outs to you from some of the other machinist channels.
Cheers Jim, great to have you along as always. It gives me a lot of pleasure to see my channel sticker appearing next to yours around the world!
Congrats on cracking the 1000 mark ! That's a nice looking mill, good move with the ER40's
Thank you! I appreciate you looking in. 👍
Hello Stuart, thought I would introduce myself just joined your channel. I joined basically because I love your dry sense humour. You came up on my feed because I’ve been investigating lathes to place in a small shop I’m building in my basement. There’s no way I can get a lathe that size in my basement but I do think I can shoehorn a 12 x 24 or a 12 x 36 down there. I can only dream of having a mill like that. Oh, and congratulations on the 1000 subscription. I plan on watching all your content.
Hi and thanks for the intro and kind words. Good luck with your shop (beware the rocher - don't let them infest! I'm having a terrible time with them) - always good to hear of more people making and creating using machine tools. You can do a heck of a lot with a 12X24 lathe. All the best and enjoy!
🥳🥳1000🥳🥳on to the next 1000 and many more! I congratulate
Thank you sir, and thanks for looking in and commenting. Looking forward to creating more content and showing what this machine can do!
Enjoyed that Stuart. I spotted the EE Lightning on the wall. $252 per collet - presumably that was free shipping ,🤣
Thanks for watching Paul! Knowing Hardinge - shipping was likely not included! I might look later. 😁
The Lightning is my absolute favourite aircraft. I nearly got a short, high speed taxi run in one - but covid cancelled that.
@@StuartsShed I've a general interest in Brit aircraft of that era. I can just about remember when the Labour Government cancelled TSR-2 (Harold Wilson and all that bunch). I watched a video which said TSR-2 could outpace Lightning on one engine in level light at altitude. Brits would have cancelled Concorde but the French would not let them - thank goodness. Cheers
@@HaxbyShed TSR-2 - the miracle aircraft that never was.
Of all sad words of tongue or pan, the saddest are these “It might have been”.
I just might be number 1000 😊or 999 🤷♂️. I’m here to stay ☝️
Thank you and welcome!
Wonderful Stuart,
Very nice find. Impressive in that it is so quiet. My Alliant 3hp 10x54 was a similar find. I will keep my eye out for any of those monoset collets and forward them to you if I come across any. Congrats on the new machine.
Don
Cheers Don, thanks for looking in - I really appreciate it. If you happen upon any series C monosets I'd love to know. They are available new from Hardinge - at Hardinge prices ($254 each) of course.
Hi Stuart congratulations on a well deserved 1000th subscriber. I am sure you channel will continue to grow with the original and interesting content. Enjoy your new to you machine, kind regards Paul
Thank you! And thanks so much for your kind words.
Hi Stuart congratulations on cracking the 1K subscribers. That's a super looking machine. Cleaned up well and looking good. I'd love to have one, but it wouldn't fit in my workshop. Great to see some chips flying already. Keep well, cheers Nobby.
Cheers Nobby! Looking forward to exploring this machine more. Thanks for looking in!
good video stuart
Thank you!
Congrats on the 1K Sub!! I am glad you like your mill, they are good machines. BTW, Love the hoodie. Where did you get it? LOL
Thanks for checking out the video! Funny you should mention that hoodie - there are a range of fabulous items available here - all at outrageously low prices!!!!

😍
Looks a great find Stuart. Looks like there is no quill depth stop like a BP. I assume that the knobs to the left of the quill is a power down feed ? A good cheap find ??? Regards from Australia.
Cheers Dave! There is a quill depth stop, but it works a bit differently to a Bridgeport. Thanks for mentioning that, because I didn't think of it - I'll demo it in one of the upcoming vids. I did get it for a very fair price. I could have offered the guy less, but I would have felt like I was being unfair at that point and couldn't bring myself to do it. There are / were a couple of issues that I didn't uncover when inspecting it, but nothing too serious and will make for some good subjects to show. Overall, it is performing well and a good find. Thanks for looking in!
I have a 1B and they are an excellent mill. Mine was stored outside for a couple of years before I bought it and nothing moved. It now is as smooth solid machine. Do you have the parts and operator manual? Let me know if you need copies
Hi! Thanks for looking in and commenting. Always good to meet another Toolmaster owner. I do have the manuals - thankyou. I got them from Keith Ruckers Vintage Machinery site - an excellent resource! Anyway, the more I use this machine, the more I like it.
@@StuartsShed your knee handle looked bent, mine hangs nicely with full engagement when it is reversed without contacting the knee. I see yours does a nice spray of oil off the spindle on start up as does mine! Let me know if you find a fix for that!
@@Throughthebulkhead thanks for the info! I will take a look at that knee crank - could be bent - or maybe not the original one? Needs some love in any case. Yes mine throws a nice line of oil. Total loss system so to speak! I assume I could do something with the seal, but I have a feeling it wouldn’t last long.
@@StuartsShed looks original to me, or it’s the same as mine. I can send a picture of mine if it helps
@@Throughthebulkhead that would be great! Might be able to put a little heat to mine and straighten it. Although it works just fine.
