That was awesome. I 've lways wanted to surf fish for them. I've many great memories of fishing for Blues on the Chesapeake Bay as a kid with my Uncle off Point Lookout. We did a lot of trolling for them with the surgical tube/hose baits (like eels), but when they were on top, we'd throw various plugs, bucktails and even large Mepps spinners at them. Blues never give up, even on the boat. Had a ton of them flip open the cooler and flop around the deck.
Proof that bluefish grow up to be sharks! Love them springtime gorilla blues! When they hit their teens size and up they are at their meanest. Great video John. That polarized filter works great. And when we thought your videos could be any better…

Does that body of bluefish end up in Long Island Sound (specifically the Eatons Neck area), or is it just a Peconic thing? Also, it's great to hear Hawaiian Dan's name. I used to run into him when I fished in the Port Jeff area prior to 2020 - great guy always sharing his "aloha" engery.

We fished mouth of CT River Sunday am. Same exact scenario. We were heading to striper rocks and saw fins in the calm shallow flats and casted like we were bonefishing. Got a few gators too. Nice video John.

On a side note I finally ordered some S&S Skinner bucktails and had one of my most productive fishing trips ever this weekend. No doubt in my mind they fish better than any other off the shelf bucktail I have ever used.
Impressive, you never used a polarizer before on the gopro. You could see the depth changes and the fish clearly. It must have been slow ride to the Big bluefish area, pretty soupy.
My 8yr old son and I stumbled onto the same class blues across the sound from you this past weekend. Same thing, tailing in small packs. HUGE blast for both of us, sight fishing with poppers. His biggest was about same class as your big fish. We enjoyed your video together. Thanks!

Huh. Well... I guess it must have been spring time when I caught my one and only bluefish off West Dennis, MA. They were hitting like crazy, but only landed one. And then, in an instant, they were gone.
The Polarized lense is a game changer for sure. You might also want to try and ware a set of Polarized shades because it will help you see and understand what viewers will see...I don't fish during the day without them.
I have no idea, but they love it when the water is glass and the sun is beating down. Almost like they're warming up and resting after a long migration. They spawn on the continental shelf, so it's not spawning.
John they sunning themselves warming up like u said years back that's what the old timers used to say we would fluke fish by Greenlawns then go catch jumbo blues sunning them selves by paradise point was almost guaranteed for a couple weeks mid may that was back in the early 90, brings back good memories

That blue was easily 16-18 lbs! That fish had more shoulders than the 16.5 from last yr John. Imagine if bluefish got up to like 25-30lbs on the regular? I know this much..... Small bluefish are called snappers, large ones the last one caught is a "chopper!" Cause like you said large bluefish are dangerous. And many had fingers chopped off!

As a comparison to the tsunami .Check out bull bay bolt m-mh 7,6-8ft , diawa saltist mq 2500-3000 . 15 to 20 ibs v2 line. Strictly artificial rod usage.sanded down grip fits in hand, great for jigging light. The brand is missing your name on the rod production.👍

The water seems flat and not structured here. Is this just a tried and true spot for you? I’m fly fishing at smiths point (for the most part) and having trouble finding fish. I’m wading just like you.
Sammy those were the days on the Chesapeake. Grew up in the 50s and 60s on the Bay and truly miss the spring Bluefish run. I have to laugh when people rave about how much a rockfish fights. I usually reply you probably never caught a 12 lb bluefish. Spring Blues disappeared 40 years ago. Rockfish heading in the same direction and now the blue crabs at historically low levels. Doesn't bode well for the future of this once fabulous fishery. I'm tired of all the lame excuses MD/VA fisheries managers and politicians throw out there.
Would take every One and Smoke it. Filet them leaving the dkin and scales on. Marinated in Teriyaki or whatever you want and Smoke indirectly for 3 to 4 hours. Take off and enjoy. The skin and scales act as a plate. Just peel the meat off. We compare it to fish Jerky.
@@markbass354 Yes Sir Mark! I use my cast iron Skillet outside. Get it White Hot. NO OIL. Put the Blackened Redfish or Catfish fillets on, couple minutes each side on everyone Fighting over them, picking them up with their fingers off the HOT Skillet. Can't beat it. Just did this on my boat on a flat with a push pole. Some of my favorite fishing of the whole season every year. Only last for 2 weeks if your lucky.

I had them all around the boat yesterday, I threw everything I had could not get them to hit!! John gets them every cast LOL
It's weird. It's not even like they're on small bait or something. There's no bait around, and they often swim right by the lure.

Blues here were sporadic and mostly shorts didn’t get lucky catching one .

@@markbass354 Yes Sir Mark! I use my cast iron Skillet outside. Get it White Hot. NO OIL. Put the Blackened Redfish or Catfish fillets on, couple minutes each side on everyone Fighting over them, picking them up with their fingers off the HOT Skillet. Can't beat it.
