Nice to see fish swim away after release. You caught more Stripers that morning than I catch in two years, not joking!
These are terrific videos and tips…thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Your videos are superb ! Coming from and living in CT your videos are so relevant and informative ! Thank You my friend !
So many nice Rockfish!
Phew that was a great morning....Fish on
Thanks John. Great to see such a healthy fishery.
This guy catches fish for fun and I can't catch one to keep, darn.
Can I call you “ Le Professeur “. Thanks for all your tutelage.
John, I have your book, did the online course and watch all your videos and I still learn something different every time I watch a new video. This was super timely since I’ll be fishing Hither Hills for three days starting Monday and I was just putting together my tackle bag. 👍🏻
Outstanding explanation! Love that hackle feathered bucktail!
Your videos changed how I fish salt water. Didn't realize I didn't know what I was doing before your videos.
Thanks for the nice video ...loving the bucktails up here in New Brunswick canada ❤🇨🇦. Tight lines 👍
wow 127k subs. your channel grew a lot over the winter
Unbelievable you do it agin👍🏼
Well that looked like a lot of fun.
I love this spot in the summer time for porgy an fluke
Where is it? Looking for a good spot
Doesn't get any better than that.
Halibut and striped bass bite has been HOT here in Northern California! Yesterday I went home with a limit in less than 2 hours, all from the shoreline. Always using your methods. Cheers!
That's spectacular to hear and I really appreciate you sharing that! I've had many good reports from CA regarding these techniques.
Mr. Skinner I am taking my nephew fishing this weekend. We will be fishing for blues and stripers from the shoreline. Is there any place you recommend. Thanks.
You have been great master and an inspiration... kindly make side on view of how you retreive bucktail for us to see the magician working his jig in the water....thanks you may put camera on side and just show casts and retreives in different pieces of water you may fish. Thanks
So John, what do you do when you hook a "catfish?" :D
Hey John, Im a 14 year old kid who has grown up around Gardiners bay and loves fishing. I was wondering if you have any tips on finding stripers on the actual bay seeing as I've struggled to get on a bite when I'm not in the back harbor. Also wanted to tell you to keep up the great work and to continue making amazing, entertaining content!
Try as best you can to fish sunrise and sunset. This video was almost entirely recorded before 5:30 a.m. The 30 minutes either side of sunset can be equally good. Look for current and edges, and be careful.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thank you!
Awesome fishing!!!!
Hey John awesome fishing you're a legend. It's impressive how you keep the go pro trained on the action wearing it on your head. Did you have to train yourself to keep focus in front of you, or am I a spaz and just incapable of focusing?
I'm very focused when fishing. I also work to minimize the field of view to keep the spot burning accusations to a minimum.
What an amazing fishery
Amazing sequence of successful casts!
Great Video
You found the spot that morning nice fishing .
Never knew the science behind the head of bucktail John will teach kids in my fishing program. Tight lines
Great video! Still trying to learn how to use these rigs! I'm more comfortable in using Poppers and Swimmers! Guess I'm afraid of getting snagged on the bottom! Thanks for making these clips!
Hung up the Dark Matter for the newer version GSB - finding that balance and keeping all the supporters happy. Well done! Although personally, I got my fingers crossed for the old cork 1201L fish stix making a long awaited return appearance at the Inlet this year with a big ol snake on the end of it on an extra dark night.
A friend borrowed the Dark Matter, so I went back to the GSB for that trip.
also .. mono to braid ... whats your fav way to tie them together when bucktailing
I go through a small barrel swivel.
GREAT content, as usual. Didn't realize the type of material made a difference in sink rates. Off-topic, have any suggestions on PFD? Kayak vs boat? Can't tell from your videos what you're wearing. Thanks!
I'm wearing Bass Pro inflatable PFD AM24.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks! You still up north fishing?
Great video as always, informative and entertaining. Hope you don’t mind, but, living in the UK there is constant arguments about the right knot to connect the braid mainline to the fluoro leader, but, I notice you use a swivel. Could you please let me know the benefits of using the swivel instead of a knot?
I feel those are more secure and faster knots on the ends of the swivel vs braid to mono, plus the swivel reduces line twist.
Many thanks, I am always looking to learn and apply to fishing over here, so its always very interesting to watch your videos. Thanks again and keep up the great work👍🏻
John, do you think a spook or a pencil would have produced under these conditions?
Hey John love the video, quick question. I wanna fish this spot near me that i know for sure definitely has bass its a small pier right next to a giant bridge and it seems that all the bass are under the bridge however the current is ridiculously strong flowing from the pier to the bridge. How would you go about fishing something like this? (Its the mini ponqoqaue bridge I’m sure you’ve heard of it)
Definitely bucktails. You can dial in the weight to match the current.
You may need to target the slower currents, like 90 minutes either side of slack.
We're exactly in Long Island?
I just finished reading "Fishing the Bucktail" and I learned a lot. I recommend it to all the fans of your videos. I still have a couple of questions about Chapter 9, especially since it was written before the MinnKota trolling motors became popular. How can I send you those questions?

Any beach flounder fishing coming up?
Maybe in a month. Depends on the bite.
Hi John I would like to order both types of S&S buck tails ( the one with more hair for floating over the structure) and the other one too! How do I specify when ordering the specific type ofbuck tails?
There are now links in the video description.
Great video John quick question. Will my vs150 work with my 10 foot trophy
A little small, but it wil;l work.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing lol just seeing this now ... I went this morning John and tried out the setup at a south shore inlet and upon second cast hooked up to a 30 pound striper the setup handled it great it was my pb striper all on a buck tail with a fat cow strip that I spit the end of...
What do you use to store and transport your jigs
Ziploc bags, but I'm careful to never put damp ones in a bag.
Hey John, why do you use swivels instead of knots to connect your leader to your main line. I'm getting guys telling me knots are better for the rod guides. But they still hang up when I cast. I believe the swivels.
His leader doesn’t go through the guides. It’s like 3-4ft long and the swivel never touches the guides. No line twist with the swivel and I trust my knots better on the swivel.
Could not have answered that better.
True facts. Thanks.
I fish FL mainly for big snook. And throw 8-9 foot rods 30-40lb braid and 80lb leader. I use an FG knot for my connection and never cast it through my guides just use 2 1/2 to 3 foot of leader. I don't believe any knot will cast smoothly through your guides.
Would the buck tail still work the same if tied to a steel leader.?
@The Goods thank you ✌️
@@BaldyFade if you fish the Texas coast were just about everything in the water as a set theeth??
I never use wire up North. I've used it cuda fishing on Florida Keys flats, but not on bucktails.
How do you decide what you’re going to target each day?
Depends on tides and wind.
“Catching Striper’s & Blue’s, casting jigs & tins” Uncle Paul fishing Jones Beach he’d say.
Bay Ridge channel, New York City
What’s the lightest bucktail and heaviest you would go for a channel like this?
1/2, 3/4, 1 oz take either forever to fall to the bottom and rise way too high. Tried 2 oz bucktail, swims low enough most of the time, but also can rise some 4 feet off the bottom… trying 3 oz. tomorrow night.
Had a nice 27 inch short hit the 1/2 oz vertically jigging. But I’d like to cover more water by swimming.
How many ounce bucktail jig
Generally 3/4-1.5 from shore.
where are you fishing in this video ???
LI, NY
Hey John I was wondering if you’ve lost a lot of big bass in your days? My best bass is a 45” ~35 pounder but last year I lost about 7 fish that I believe to have been 45+ pounds and I just can’t seem to get over them and beat myself up about it every time fishing season comes around. I was fortunate to get a nice 30+ pounder last year but those darn 40+ never fail to outsmart me in some way. I’ve had nightmares about my biggest bass that I’ve lost. Do you have any stories about losing a monster? Fishing is so enjoyable yet makes me miserable sometimes. I’ve even lost a few monsters to a darn grey seal snatching it off my line. Just can’t seem to win with them as of yet and with the current state of the fishery seeming to be on the decline not sure if the time will ever come
I hope this doesn't jinx me, but no, I recall just one. The hook pulled on a low forty right in front of me. Sharp hooks, tight initial drag, hard and multiple hooksets. That will tilt the odds in your favor.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thank you John I will apply this next time I go out I hope you have a great season !
In my experience most fish are lost by not setting the drag properly and reeling in to hard when the fish is making a strong run. But sounds like you're doing pretty good as far as being in the right spots.. I've never had a seal steal a fish though!
ayo Johnny. how do you feel about uncle josh coming back and have you tried the Buff Baits out of Connecticut's split pork tail teasers ( made from real pork) Buffs gives anglers more for the money they give more teasers they come in a jar but also have resealable bags filled w pork teasers to refill the buffs jars... pretty cool concept. 😎
Amazingly, I'm not all that moved by the return of Pork Rind. I actually never ran out because I hoarded so much years ago. The Otter Tails and Fat Cow Jig Strips work just fine and are more convenient and less messy. That said, choice is a good thing. I was in Plum Gut an hour ago and used the new UJ70. It's good.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing you fished plum gut on a boat or wading?? I remember my first time fishing in the rocks of orient point 👉 my God that sweep over the reef that like 2 to 3 inches of water coming over the reef is so powerful all I could think was welp as long as no sharks are there I can get a free ride to Connecticut if I slip or miss time the walk back to shore. lol
Boat.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing awesome I told my self stop being one sided always choosing to surf cast that if opportunities come to boat fish go boat fishing it can open doors to understand the water and fishery more plus give me a break because loading up to surf cast w no truck to cruise a beach is a ton of energy/work ... great talk John thanks be safe and catch ya out there in the wild
Not fair! ;-)
I have about 20 different bucktails that I've bought through the years .....I have ZERO catches on them 🤷🏻♂️ I seriously don't know what I'm doing , I have no confidence in them at all
The most common mistake is going to heavy. Try to glide or swim the bucktail a foot or two off the bottom on a slow to moderate retrieve. I have a whole playlist of bucktail fishing, an online course, and a book. Plenty of resources available.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing TY John , I think my biggest issue is I never quite know where the bucktail is in the water column ( am I high ? Am I just above the bottom? Am I somewhere in the middle ? I never quite feel it 🤷🏻♂️
@@Exploremorefishing If you have a situation were you can present the bucktail with a conventional reel I find its much easier too put & keep the bucktail where you want it.This is how I prefer to fish bucktails, swim shad, diamond jigs in wicked current such as inlets. This is'nt always fesiable but it may help with the "confidence issue"..
@@larryosit8118 TY , if you don't mind me asking ..what is it about the conventional reel that makes a difference for you ? ( opposed to a spinning reel )
👍
would you recommend north or south shore for stripers rn? having trouble getting on them
The size in on the South Shore now as the migration is pushing through.
I hope you can tell me the address!
Hey John! I got a quick question to ask. Not to be a creep or anything but did you happen to be in NJ this weekend? I thought I saw you backing out of a driveway or something. If you don’t feel comfortable to respond I would understand, but it would fun to know I saw a famous fisherman! Lol
Not me.
