I am fortunate enough to be the owner of one of these rigs. You simply can not beat the clean tones and the ability to take pedals. The bad news is that it's *loud*. 85 watts of *stupid loud*. More head room than you'll ever need, but if you want to overdrive the tubes you need to make the volume so loud it will peel the paint off the walls. Also really heavy to transport. But that said, the tones are simply sparkling gorgeous. Good review Mr Marty and thanks!
You guys with the ear bleeding Twins can also remove either the inner or outer 6L6GC power tubes for a theoretical 1/2 power without having to rebias the amp. Recall though, that we hear logarithmically, so half the number of power tubes will not exactly sound like half power, but it won't quite ad loud. Still even with two 6L6GC's, the amp is LOUD. There are circuit mods you can do that will help the amp break up, but again it's loud. I have a '68 TR that I tweaked and it starts to break up at about a volume of five, but again, it's still real loud.
Beauty! I have wanted one of these since I first experienced the original 1965, blackface in 1969, as a kid in a garage band. Now in my mid 60's I was finally able to buy one. Wow! One big item off my personal bucket list. ;)
@@austinhawkins1443 Not sure but $800 might be the right $US price for a modern Tonemaster Twin Reverb. Not the same animal at all. No tubes in these, but they do seem to be a decent offering and the only choice I would think if one is a gigging musician. The Tonemaster is about 1/2 the weight of the tube versions and will be more reliable on the road IMO.
It would be nice to have so many amps that you've forgotten about one. I have 3 and I know where they're at all times. I've been wanting a 65 deluxe reverb but I got to hear a twin in person and fell in love. Played on one yesterday and it was everything I was hoping it would be. But the price!!!!! Well someday....
Just picked one up today, I hate that I waited so long, there is no substitute, thing is amazing. It’s stupid heavy, damn near killed myself getting it home... it’s ridiculously loud probably never get it above 3 In the house... pretty thrilled with it so far, had lots of amps over the years and this one stands out... it’s amazing for acoustic too which surprised me... modeling amps just aren’t even close to true tubes and spring reverb... love that it ain’t digital worth every penny...
Everyone mentions they are loud, I don’t think some understand just how loud they are, I never get much passed two and it doesn’t tail off it just get louder and louder at 8 or above you really want to be at least 50 feet from it or it’s just brutal, the shame is it doesn’t sound good until it’s at least on 7... love it though, but really is meant for playing stadiums or very large rooms... and shockingly heavy, like pull your arm out if you don’t expect a lead boat anchor heavy lol
Haha yeah, I just got a vintage 65’ reverb as a Christmas present to myself, had always heard how heavy and loud they are. I’ve got a Silvertone 1484 and a 35 watt Mesaboogie DC 3 as well, that we’re my two previous most loud amps. I will say the twin is in a whole league to itself for the volume outside of a 100watt Marshall stack or something. I normally play with some studio headphones on for monitoring recording that isolate the sounds, and that’s enough protection from cranking my other amps, but with the Twin it’s almost painful in my smallish room with those headphones and additional earplugs inside my ears, when I have the amp on 8-10. Sounds amazing though with the breakup you get from that blackface era, but I’m going to have to get an attenuator maybe.....It is heavy also, more than any other amp I have outside of a 4x10 Ampeg classic cab. But it wasn’t too bad carrying it by myself downstairs, I probably wouldn’t be wanting to do that every night though, and I’m 6’2” 215lbs and used to lift weights, so that thing probably would need some help if you’re clubbing with it.
It sounds great at low volumes. The idea that it doesn't sound good until it is at '7' is ridiculous. And if one wants to push the tubes a bit you can just pull two power tubes to cut the wattage down significantly.
A buddy of mine regularly had to carry his old Silverface Twin down 2 stories of old rickety wooden stairs outside of his apartment whenever he had a gig. Not fun to carry. Especially when those old rickety, wooden stairs were icy in the winter.
Duuuddddeee! I want this so freaking much! I have a Blues Deluxe Reissue that sounds great, but not as much bottom end as I want. I swapped the speaker to a GA-SC64 which did help with fattening up and adding some punch to the tone, but still not the "magical tone" we all thirst for! If I could afford one I would offer you some $$$ for this Marty! Sounds beautiful as always! 🤘
Yes...I thought this being a valve (tube) amp, it would be expensive. It's something I would like to promise myself when (or if) I ever attain the level of guitar I would like to be at. A long way to go yet! :)
I've heard many people say that the 85 watt twin played next to a 100 watt marshall will punch thru. I have two 100 watt marshall heads that have never seen full power without a powerbrake. I also own a super and deluxe reverb. None of those amps have ever been maxed out either. Can't imagine running the twin full bore. Deluxe and super start breaking up around 6.5. Muddy at 10.
I had an original 1966. I paid $150 used in the early 80s. Sold it for $350 3 years later. Boy was I dumb. Are the reissues better than the originals? I've heard sound comparisons and I like the reissues better.
I've got a Fender Mustang III. For my ears & money it simulates this amp & many others. Not sure how it would sound side by side in comparison, but it sounds great to me. Worth checking out for those who want a variety of tones. Please do some Buddy Holly tunes Marty, on Feb.2 it will be 60 years since his last performance, as he died after midnight on Feb.3, 1959. Thanks Marty.
I’ve always wanted one of these. Funny thing the first job I ever got as a teenager I want to save and buy one. I bought a car instead. Still want one.
Love that Heritage....you inspired me to get my H-555....say hello to Pete for me at NAMM and let him know I bought because of you! He'll probably remember "The Chicago Todd"...cheers...
Hey Marty, thanks for finding your Fender Twin 65 amp in storage and giving us a demo. Sweet Amp, bet you are glad that you did nit sell it. You need to dig out more equipment from storage and do another show & tell ;-)
Fender needs to make a single-channel, 2-6L6 Twin. You can pull out 2 tubes (the correct pair, that is) and it's not going to affect practical volume. Too bad it weighs a ton because the clean tone is wunnerful.
I had the chance to jam on a vintage Fender amp in GC. I think it was a tweed deluxe, but I don't exactly remember. It remember it sounding great with the PRS I was playing. Don't remember what model that was either, I just remember GC wanting 3 grand for it. But that was cheap compared to the amp, they wanted 17 grand for that. At the time I felt like a rock star since it's not every day Joe schmo, beginner guitar guy, can walk in and play with equipment worth 20 grand.
Looks like amps used on Shakiras Mongoose Tour They Bassman 4x10s are versatile and exoensive .not thr one originally demoed here but close.from Zeppelin to Surf
I own one of these ..very loud lol.i pull 2 power tubes out and unhook one of the speakers to drop it down to about 40 watts still loud .but a bit more friendly. I want to try an attenuator on it but i haven't yet .great clean amp just kinda bland without pedals unless u can crank it up some.
All of them will break up to a point but it will be loud depending on your situation. All amps have some sort of “Headroom” or space where it’s clean. I suggest looking up some fender amps by era on Ampwares.com.

How well does the volume pot work?
Below 1 is considered the "might as well by a solid state amp" setting.
