Mr. Collier, I have enjoyed your excellent videos for years now. I have lived long enough now to see my last daughter leave for college. As a sole possession father for 15 years of a mess of girls, I have always dreamed of going to Fabtek to meet your and Mr, Moffatt. I never could afford it. I have now already paid for my flight and hotel for Fabtek this year. I look so forward to taking a moment of your valuable time to express how much assistance you have been to myself and my small group of students. I am a 100% disabled veteran and all the others are the same to my home each week to give them the pride to learn about welding. It gives them such satisfaction and pride. They watch your and Mr. Moffatts videos weekly and it helps so much. Your videos help our group of misfits more than you will ever know. From all of us, I say Thank You and hope to meet you. The interview with the lady from Georgia Trade school was Great.
Beautiful wedding band on your stainless man. I'm a boilermaker apprentice now I've been a subscriber ever since I started trade school in 2015. One important thing I didn't hear you mention are "FISH EYES". If you don't walk the torch out the bevel you risk leaving a "Fisheye" in the root. When the inspector sees your root to advance to fill and cap that will fail you. Not everyone is as experienced as you and might put in excessive reinforcement. If your heavy on your root and a grinder is permitted you can feather the root, turn your machine up to weld back over the root without filler to "suck back" excessive reinforcement. If someone isn't experienced enough to weld a root perfect they can still pass if they know how to avoid and fix any mistakes
Hi Jodie, I'm the RT UT Welding Lead Hand of BWXT Canada Ltd. All of our Nuclear pressure related TSSA welds are based on this XXH schedule Super coupon pipe. 1 1/2 ID, 2 3/4" OD for TIG and stick in all of Carbon Steel, Stainless and inconel. Half the applicants don't pass the initial stick carbon steel entry test. if they do, they have 3 levels of testing afterwards with the previous mentioned metals/processes and it's not easy to find welders who can do it as flawlessly as myself or the other senior RT UT Welders. We do have more BWXT specific critical weld tests that must be passed as well, one of which takes days to finish the joint with stick. Your video is a good example of the tig root for this coupon. From my experience, critical/RT UT quality TIG welders are not common amongst the younger folk. If you can share some Inconel stick and Stainless stick on this coupon, they can see the behaviour and nature of welding metals that can be prone to inclusions if not performed at the highest skill. Good video :)
Great video man - I'm not a welder but I really appreciate the nature of videos and channels like this that spread knowledge generously for the betterment of ALL. tip of the cap
Skipping through and listened to the interview with the young lady and at 12:00 makes me really appreciate being a union hand. While I agree with her comment I do not agree with disqualifying someone because they are not a suck ass. You are hiring someone on their skill set in a craft not because they are a people person. Aside from that I love the vids, I use your tig finger regularly and I appreciate the effort you put into making quality content.
I went to a 3 month welding trade program. After getting some basic certifications I wanted to get the the job that would give me the most experience possible. I applied for a job shop and the guy interviewing me liked my attitude so much that he didn't even give me a weld test. He hired me on the spot. That job had machinists, CNC operators welders and fabricators of all kinds. I had the chance to do a bit of everything and it was a great experience. Shoot for the best and just do it.
@@dazdavis7896 currently in that position haha, feel like i have imposter syndrome, i finished my 2 month welding course (only 2 weeks tig) in october, and now im in a ASME pressure vessel tig welder/fitter, and we do exotic alloys haha, first day there they said lets certify him in c276 on 1/4" pipe 6g, you can imagine how that got my stomach feeling seeing that i had never done anything smaller than 8" carbon pipe on a rotator never done 6g xD , passed it though but busted on my sch 160 carbon monster ticket, theyre letting me retry that so i hope all goes well lol
Without a doubt the worst day of my welding history came from too much coffee..... not drugs or alcohol but really strong coffee that I really liked to brew at home. Thank God for grinders on that day!!!! I actually had to drink a beer to calm my nerves for 3G fillet welds. Never had a problem with coffee before but HOLY COW I can still remember my hilarious attempts of joining 2 pieces of 1/4" plate together. No digital cameras back then....... Thanks for video...... God bless you and yours!
Attitude is everything!! I just got a welding job the other day and I failed my welding test BUT my attitude was super positive & the instructor told me to come back in 6days and retake the test & I passed. I’m pretty sure my attitude was it ❤️. Good luck out there y’all 👍🏾
Can you imagine being the guy testing Jody? Very good interview. I agree about the caffeine thing it has been my biggest improvement by just getting rid of it! Can't believe the difference in steadiness.
DEFINITELY, had to give up coffee for about a month to be able to get steady enough! I absolutely understand why they talk about the old-timers having a cold one or two to get rid of their shaky hands
That was an amazing video. Thank you for taking the time to make it. The TIG finger is the real deal too. I've got 2 and use them daily. Upped my welding for a few bucks! Thank you.
On the root I use to do a falling weld on the top side for better control of the root size. You may not be able to do it on a test as it's not allowed to do falling welds with TIG but it's so much easier to control the root bulge and especially if the joint is a bit wide. But this is only for open root welds and on the top half as you would risk lack of fusion otherwise. The molten puddle will hang from the top and run out to the sides where it cools down and stop flowing and you can still hold a nice key hole and the added filler will tend to run to the sides instead of forming a large bulge in the middle and get pulled down as it would going uphill. That way you get a very smooth and almost flat root with just a slight bulge.
Hi Jody... Going back and watching some old videos as I have to do 6G 3" XXS on steel pipe.. Tig root, stick fill and cap. Any recommendations for heat on the root?
Mr.Collier, thank you for this insightful video. I appreciate everything you do for us as viewers these videos are priceless and has helped me immensely. Thank you and I wish you nothing but the best.
Hi Jody. Thanks for the time and trouble you spend in the great material you share. I am just started with welding disciplines and have gained so much for your videos. Thanks again out of South Africa.
I work at ingalls, 2 years now. Structural & pipe welding currently a pipe welder & If u want Beginner experience & looking for a craft to get into I recommend it but if u want to look for real professional experience I recommend looking for a new opportunity because u won’t weld anything beveled I won’t say too much about the details but yea u won’t get any industry experience it’s Alot different from shipyard experience & industry experience
Everytime I see the hoops you have to jump with aircooled stuff I'm glad I got myself a watercooled MIG/MAG welder from the start. Hella expensive, but worth every last penny.
Nice video. Just like you welded the root. So is the welder test for TIG welding, for pipe welding tests in Germany. Clamped in 45 ° and then may not be re-clamped. So it is with thin pipe 2-5mm and for thick pipes.

Awesome video. I just found this. Your discussion with Sydney was totally informative and really valuable; I'm going to the Pod-cast with you two now. Thank you again for your real world videos and great content (as always) Jim Tree
Are you using CK’s gas saving kit? I know I shouldn’t learn to TIG weld with massive cups because they hide mistakes. Do the gas saver kits do the same?
Hi Jody just quick question I am in Uk and the welding constructor hi give me to weld plate 3g position with welding rods 7016. so I ask him way we not use 7018 because hi say this welding rots are better it's that true?
dumb question, whenever i tack up pipe i do the four penetrated tacks and as i weld around the pipe especially with tig the gap seems to start off great and by the time im done its slammed shut on me. How/why does it do that
Could you put a subtitle for those of us who do not understand the language 100%? You should know that there is a lot of the Latin community that follows your videos 😉 Thank you very much. Greetings.
Very good this video. I would like to know if you have some information about welding for sheet of 0.5 mm for aeronaltc components. I'm Bispo and I work an company of helicopter in Brazil. Thank you.
I'm from the Gulf coast of Mississippi and I've always been told by other welders who worked at Ingalls ship building that you do not want to work at a ship yard, some of the nightmares that I've heard about ingles surpasses any other place I've ever worked, years ago 6 welders dropped dead because somebody left a Heli- torch on, and it was leaking throughout the night and when the next shift came the argon that you cannot smell doesn't have an odor filled up the lungs of 6 welders and they dropped dead , ingles is always a high stress place And it's dirty welding, filthy conditions to Weld in, And next to the ship yard you do not want to be a tube welder for the boilermakers, the boiler makers has the highest fatility rate and most of the time with the boiler makers even though you're hiered on as a welder you hardly ever get to weld, you have to do strenuous backbreaking bull gang work , which is a fancy term for common labor work.
I can't believe I am not the first to comment after only 29 minutes! Thanks for the seemingly endless pool of knowledge! BTW my name is not Mason, it's Ben. My son changed my Google profile name and now they won't let me change it back!

The standard boilermaker common arc test! I know it well. Only allowed a file and a hand brush. Awesome to see you do it.
Liability I would assume.
That’s what the hall tells us anyways haha
my first common ark is this January. I just got in. They let me test plate at boot camp to see where I'm at and I got plate but that's not tube lol

Any titanium welding videos coming up?
I'm in the ship yard and copper nickel is absolutely everywhere!
When I was a welder I originally certified through my local community college. It was nearly free.
Nice video.
Just like you welded the root.
So is the welder test for TIG welding, for pipe welding tests in Germany.
Clamped in 45 ° and then may not be re-clamped.
So it is with thin pipe 2-5mm and for thick pipes.
What size TIG torch is best for root weld ?? Does it matter ?
Can you do the lay wire technique in the vertical position or is it strictly in the horizontal position
I have to pass this exact test for Epic Piping in Louisiana. The job pays over $30 per hour but you have to pass x-ray on 6G schedule 160 to get the job🥵
Can you use the walking the cup method on a 6G root versus free hand or is that simply just personal preference and what you’re comfortable with?
Very good video. Educational and informative. That 20 minutes went by so fast wish it was an hour long. Thanks for the upload Jody.
Please do a 2"sch10 stainless pipe. I would like to get your opinion on what's the best way to tack and where to feed the rod doing backfeeding
Justin Hughes he doesn’t shoot the gap or “backfeed “but his dip technique is phenomenal
Brad Albrant I need to see someone prepping a 2" and also back feed root
What's the spec for pipe coupon that works best for 6g?
Do you use a feather edge as well as the 1/8 gap
What type of situation do you have to take a hand written test in Welding
U for got to say what temp are u running the tig
At my local school. when we do tests. the always heat when black pipes, when doing Tig to 200 c. its HOT :)
Hey Jodi, can you do a schedule 40 2 inch in the 6G position with all stick electrodes. I'm struggling
As always a great video Jody. Your videos always inspire me to me a better welder.
What’s your amp on the root
Awesome video. I just found this. Your discussion with Sydney was totally informative and really valuable; I'm going to the Pod-cast with you two now. Thank you again for your real world videos and great content (as always) Jim Tree
Looks great Jody ! I love your honesty
Their open root pipe stick test is with 7018, so don't forget to set the machine at d negative when root pass is with 7018.
That "too much coffee" failed me but given a chance to cool down and a bit of chatting allowed me a second chance to absolutely nail a few cert tests.
Hello .. can i convert a 200A ac arc welder into ac tig welder and weld aluminum using hilum
Are you using CK’s gas saving kit? I know I shouldn’t learn to TIG weld with massive cups because they hide mistakes. Do the gas saver kits do the same?

That looks like a lot of gap. I assume that is a standard dimension per the test? What is it 1/4"?
5/32" gap. ASME pipe codes like b31.1 mostly allow for 1/8" plus or minus 1/32"
I want have to becam welder Tig ..this video very help for study...thank you very much... Indonesia
Thank you new port news va is a great paying place i really want to to take a pipe test there if all possible
