I'm taking MY FIRST OFFICIAL 6G tube test , during Common Arc testing a month from now with my local Boilermaker Union. One shot at a 6G extra heavy wall 2" tube , combo, TIG root and 7018 hot pass to cap. Its timed, 14 contractor proctors ready to inspect and pass or fail. This video is exactly what I needed to see and hear. Thank you! I'm looking forward to being a Union Boilermaker. A little background, I just finished a two year welding tech school and my apprenticeship starts soon!
@LifewithGT passed it then, all 15 of them bought off, Just took test again to re-up. This time I did 3 carbon tube tests. 70 wire, stainless 309 , and inconel. Passed. Good starting point Carbon tube with 3/32 er70s wire, 3/32 root open @ 100amps tig root. Been on 3 powerplant shutdowns. It gets easier the more you test. Good luck on your test!

I was a welder for 20 years and I went into IT (my hobby) in 1998. I was ASME certified pipe to 8",TIG and stick, I was certified brass to stainless on cryogenic vessel valves. I was ISO 9000 certified in stick, flux core, mig and tig, uphill, downhill and flat. I welded an uphill mig on a pump mount for a BJ Services truck that I guarantee you still on the rusting truck frame. Do you know what I miss the most? I miss my fellow welders! The comradery, the jokes and so on. I miss those days! The welder that broke me out told me once, "STOP trying to make it happen and just let it happen!" "Day dream, get comfortable because you can't weld when you are uncomfortable" I've been in a ditch of water on my back welding and I've always remembered that and some of my most comfortable times have been in a situation like that!

I work for JVIC in Louisiana and one of our welders used to work at the Huston shop. She has a lot of weld tube stickers on her toolbox and turns out a few of the weld tube guys work at JVIC in Huston. Pretty cool
Thank you brother for this, Monday is my very FIRST welding interview & testing AT THE COMPANY, I'm sooo nervous 😓 but I'm already preparing myself to most importantly LEARN FROM IT.
Awesome, make sure you warm up your torch before flexing it. Flexing it cold work hardens the copper tube and it will shorten the life of the flex neck.
Just a little advice for those who go into test. When you go into take your weld test and your pipe is tacked tighten a crescent wrench at the edge of your pipe so you have a resting spot for your arm, rather than holding it in the air or a hot pipe. Does wonders believe me. Also get a good placement around your pipe and do a dry run around before you start a pass. Less tie ins the better.
I certified in the Navy as a Nuclear Grade welder. Was the emergency welder on a Submarine. First sub I had to qualify on 308 SS then the second sub was an Inconel reactor plant. Had to do quarterly Visual/PT and then annual X-ray. Both were restricted 12" above, 12" behind 1" pipe in horizontal position. Cut and shape your insert, create your lands on the pipe, tack 4 places, pull the insert, then filler and cover passes. It was so hard to do. When basically you only weld every 3 mos you start to lose the touch, one dip of the tip and you fail tungsten flakes show up nice in an X-ray. Usually took 2 weeks of non stop 8 hrs a day to get a pipe to pass X-ray. Then you go to sea and don't touch it for at least 3 months again. Once I had to qualify X-ray after not touching a torch for almost 6 mos. What a bitch!!! Love your videos good stuff
Sam helped me out when I cramped really really bad because I wasn't well hydrated last year. (Shout out to Sam welding inspector). On a Good note I passed my welding test.
Just took a gravy weld test on a weld I've made thousands of times before. I couldn't quit shaking I was so nervous, but after the slag dropped from that first pass I fuckin nailed it!!! Love your stuff buddy!
I'm 36 years old and have a new welder on order. This is the first time I've ever welded when I get it. But I have always wanted to know how to weld. My goal is to start my own business, and be everybody's friend because everyone likes a welder! I've been watching a lot of your videos and am learning a lot. Thanks for the hard work you put into your videos and keep up the awesome work.
The material is so thick! Where I went to college, our welding test was on 18 gauge steel and aluminum. You cut a sheet of steel/aluminum in 4 pieces, weld 2 passes with oxy acetylene, second was TIG, 3rd was MIG/spool. Then you'd have to roll it on an english wheel to fit a buck. Secret to a smooth weld was a few shots of Jameson.
Hey man I just wanted to stop by and thank you. I passed my 6g 2" schedule 80 pipe test at my new job. All thanks to your videos giving me tips, and the presentation helped me learn from no experience in only 3 days out of a 10 day schooling though the company. Keep up the great videos, I look forward to learning new tricks.
Every time I'm in that booth I'm nervous, I don't think it's something you shake. Always stay humble though, there's always someone better out there but you were just the lucky one to be in that booth.
After testing on pipe they usually test you again in the job site on what they’re welding out there it’s called your production shot and if you fail it you won’t get the job
That was great, I always wanted to know what I would be in for in a testing situation, I think that the new information will help me make a better understanding and a better test.
Very inspiring I just bought my first TIG machine learning privately. I have only "soldered" electronics in the past, so this is a BIG leap for me. lol.
Soldering electronics can get complicated says a guy who burnt a hole through a board trying to resolder a pin that I didn't make sure was lined up before reconnecting a wire connector .
I just started learning to weld not long ago and I'm always afraid when I hear of testing but you have given me the vim to go ahead and have a test. Thanks man...I have subscribed 👍
That’s where I took my first ever welding test. Been a welder for over two years now I love it man I learned off watching ur tips and tricks awesome man👌👍
Ive been at it for 18 yrs. From green hand helper to boilermaker to pipe welder 10yrs straight to NCCCO operator to manual machinist. I'm taking a structural and pipe test tomorrow and that's why my ass is on UA-cam at 1:30am. This is how I get my jitters out. I've never, two tacked a test. Pro tip: tacks at 12oclock 3oclock 9oclock (right handed welders) 5oclock (left handed welders) 7oclock. Not once have I had an issue in a test lab doing this. Ive tested in SETX, Houston, SWLA, and Virginia. In Virginia they gave me a 2"sch 40 carbon to 2" sch 80 304L on a 45°. It was the hardest test I've taken. Second pro tip: get a big glass pickle jar and the tig torch head. Sit on the couch while watching TV walk the cup on the pickle jar. This will stop you from pushing on the tig rig and help you form a good muscle memory. Also you can tape copy paper to it and see the weave of your walk. The cup will make a grove in the paper. Like he said in the video nobody can give it to you, you have to go get it. So practice, practice and practice some more. Welding machines are getting cheaper and cheaper. Go to a scrap metal yard, buy material to build a table, and material to weld on. (Tig welding) make sure your metal is clean, if not your welds will never look good
Much love to you for sharing your knowledge and encouraging people to this awesome profession. I start welding school tomorrow excited ass hell to start something new in my life. Peace out homie. God bless you.
I tested at that lab for Sam in Deer Park TX. Setting procedures on API 1104 and B313 butt and brach .250 wall, welded the branch out. Sam is a cool guy but he is sharp. He looked my partner out on the branch. The welding procedure was for a company called Trystream.
That was a brilliant insight into quality control, training and much about managing oneself. Really decent of Sam and the Lab to allow the public access to their work. Thank you!
Man I've been a welder for over 20years but all my welding experience has been in the motorsports industry... All of the testing I've done is so different... It's kinda funny how you could have 3 people all be welders but all 3 have radically different experiences with welding I would hate to have to do some of these pipe welding tests lol My judge is always the xray/ultrasonic testing and/or the machine alot of us call the ripper...the tensile strength testing machine.. I really enjoyed watching how you guys have to do things ...very interesting to me anyway
I'm 67 years old. When I was young I worked as a pipeline welder. I welded on anything I could. At 33 the oil field croaked. I went back to school to become a mechanical engineer. I am still an engineer. But, I still love welding. (I busted a few tests). I was a lecturer at the University after I graduated. If you quit welding please consider going to engineering school. You will excel if you ever passed a test as hard as what was shown today..
Where i live the companies here do all mig on anywhere from tube to 2 foot i beam steel. You go in for an interview bring your hood wear your boots then you go out do your weld test and they say yes or no and if they say yes you start right there no matter what time it is. I've failed weld tests when i first started out.
Dima here from germany i am 10 years in welding i faild mi first weld test from then i pass every other. I hope i pass my next 15-20 Tests. I am testen in 2F and 1G but maybe i sock up to 3G/F or even to 5F 6G. In germany you get tested evry 2 years. Btw i am most part struktural and a bit thin Pressung pipe from 2" to 4"
This is the first one of your videos I’ve watched mate and it was excellent. Good to see how humble you are and that you experience the nervousness that we all do for a weld test. I failed a test about 15 years ago and I still remember that feeling and like the bloke who guest appeared on this video said, make sure you always go there to make sure you pass. I let my arrogance fail me that day and it was a great lesson to learn. I work in the mines in Australia and we do tests all the time and at 42 I still get nervous every time. I think a good welder sees every weld as a weld test though if they have pride and passion in the trade. Keep up the great work mate. 👍

Pretty cool video. I have a question though, do the inspectors know how to weld what they are inspecting? Or do they only know what to look for? Also do they ever use that machine with the jelly to inspect the weld?
If the welder says No nervous mean lying Again if he Never Bust , that’s means His Dam lying, you Right about that brother keep up the good work thank you and learn something today

No matter what it takes, I’m devoted to being the most knowledgeable and skillful welder in every room I walk in.
@@djxkoxxf6898 Keep after it. there are so many Opportunities in the world of welding it's a great Trade great career field and it's tough and for sure rewarding. you're on a good path.
I busted my first test but I always take a notepad and write down what the weld looks like how it felt to weld it. Sometimes even take notes on the gap and landing, maybe write down what material it is you know Carbon or Stainless for example what size rod to use what amperage. You know it’s all little factors but if you can learn to eliminate the small things that can mess you up you can focus on the big picture and it’s just laying that metal down being consistent and staying in the groove.

27:32 As early as 15-20+ years ago older welders would not impart ANY advice to young ppl wanting to learn to weld. Nowadays u have a whole new crop of excellent welders like these two young men freely giving advice. I applaud them. EXCELLENT JOB, young men! 👍👍👍👍👍
Great video broh, your tips help me pass my first test in that same test lab 3 weeks ago. 👌
56 year of age, just did my official 1F - 2F ... and yep, still a bit jibbers (positive result ✊)

thanks for the great video... never been to a facility...only tested in shop with no inspector present.. . outstanding guys!!!!
Love your videos helps me allot i got my 6G test this month my first test i failed cause of the nerveus and ppl was watching me while i welding and i didnt eat in the morning thanks you tthis gave me a boost greets from netherland
I work for JVIC in Louisiana and one of our welders used to work at the Huston shop. She has a lot of weld tube stickers on her toolbox and turns out a few of the weld tube guys work at JVIC in Huston. Pretty cool
What I like about this video is that you emphasis mental preparation not process, great attitude.
Everytime I have yo take a different test I refresh with your videos. Thanks
Today a had my test ,next day good news ,passed 6 “ pipe and 2” also .. Me dijo el guy esta bien amigo !!! 🤨thank God ..!!!🙏🏼🙌🏼🤝
@@weldtube
Thanks, keep up the great videos
I like seeing the young guys helping each other out in a trade that's not easy to get started in !
I’m a 14 year old that wants to get into welding and I really love your vids they entertain me and they help me out a lot
I really like what you do for the welding community sharing your knowledge, like your videos and your welds keep it up
I'm 36 years old and have a new welder on order.
What brand and type of welding machine did you buy?
Learned more about how tough it is to get a start as a welder then the actual welding process.
it is ,.... I went 2300km from home to fail the test
Great video brother!! I’ll be there soon taking my test!!
Took my first test here about 7 weeks ago and passed! Not gonna lie- I was pretty damn nervous
I always brought my own tig rig and stinger.Because a lot of the testing labs don't keep up their equipment .So it is good idea to bring it.
I love my stinger v and flex head torch so it's a must
Some shops don’t let you bring your tools
@@adrianbarbosa2560 usually they have top of line then
chris jones when I went to test for a job they purposely have the worst tools they got so you would have to deal with it
@@adrianbarbosa2560 that's why I would bring my own just in case. Always good to be prepared
Just got in to the boiler makers and this really helped me out. 👍🏽
Have you done a retube yet?
Joshua Cooper not yet with this Covid stuff going on we are laid off til October and classes don’t start up til September.
DCR 986 be careful man, retubes are fun. 6010 seal welds are fun
I ain’t ever busted a test because I ain’t ever taken one!!! 😂
Right there with ya
Never passed one either 😂
Pure gold video !! Thanks for giving back. Great interview too
I have a test next week and I’m nervous as hell!! This definitely was informative and very helpful!!
After testing on pipe they usually test you again in the job site on what they’re welding out there it’s called your production shot and if you fail it you won’t get the job
Good advice, don't leave until you know you'll pass. You can always grind and reweld.
That was great, I always wanted to know what I would be in for in a testing situation, I think that the new information will help me make a better understanding and a better test.
Just busted an inconel test a few days ago. Happens to the best of us
Very inspiring I just bought my first TIG machine learning privately.
I'm coming in the Welding Business, you have did great job on that tube. Thank you
That’s where I took my first ever welding test. Been a welder for over two years now I love it man I learned off watching ur tips and tricks awesome man👌👍
Hi I have a question I am going for a welding test tomorrow but idk what to expect.
I like this young man I bet he had some great parents
Love this channel. Welder from Philippines
(Tig welding) make sure your metal is clean, if not your welds will never look good
I really appreciate the advice your giving man. literally overlapping my test notes with stuff from your videos.
It's kinda funny how you could have 3 people all be welders but all 3 have radically different experiences with welding
I would hate to have to do some of these pipe welding tests lol
My judge is always the xray/ultrasonic testing and/or the machine alot of us call the ripper...the tensile strength testing machine..
I really enjoyed watching how you guys have to do things ...very interesting to me anyway
hell yeah bud, what a great video on the testing aspect. i love learning all I can.
Amazing video man & the best advice, this will help me a lot in the coming year of my welding career, I’m 19 this is gonna help a lot !
Career change for me at 57! Just starting on my weld journey.
BEST INTERVIEW YET !!!!!!
Great video guys and some good info for new welders on what to expect when they have to test.
Where i live the companies here do all mig on anywhere from tube to 2 foot i beam steel. You go in for an interview bring your hood wear your boots then you go out do your weld test and they say yes or no and if they say yes you start right there no matter what time it is. I've failed weld tests when i first started out.
Big ups on the videos man I'm watching and liking all your stuff.
Btw i am most part struktural and a bit thin Pressung pipe from 2" to 4"
No idea what anyone is talking about but I find it really cool
You know something is happening because everything is moving huh. Hell yeah, you may want to slack up on the shit a little
Now THAT, is a badass tig setup, sir.
Whats up bud just wanted to say thanks for all you do with this challel I'm a self toght welder never been to school for welding love to go one day in a welder / Machinist at work gor my own shop at the house you have inspired me 10000 % bud thanks keep up the good work one day maybe I'll be able to pick up a tig welder for myself and teach myself tig thanks bro
Very good content buddy. I like how you elaborated on a ton of ood points. Keep up the good vids.
Idk if I’ve ever hit the like button that fast. FANTASTIC VIDEO.
Much appreciated.
Pretty cool video. I have a question though, do the inspectors know how to weld what they are inspecting? Or do they only know what to look for? Also do they ever use that machine with the jelly to inspect the weld?
You need years on the field before you can be an inspector so yes they do
@@baileesmith2007 not true you usually need experience or certs to back it up or no one well hire you as an inspector
This is real stuff keep it up man thank you for giving back!
Welded now for about 2 years had 11 weld tests over the years busted 4 of them on 7018s for lack of fusion on the top wall on that 6g
If the welder says No nervous mean lying
Again if he Never Bust , that’s means His Dam lying, you Right about that brother keep up the good work thank you and learn something today
0:36 Dude, i thought for a sec he was STEVE AUSTINE 🍻🍻
Same here
Love what your doing brother... your going to be huge oneday
Cuando la humildad se pierde, solo se recupera con una bofetada fuerte que te da la vida...
Dope video. i'm still in welding college and these video's help a lot on seeing the testing process..
Lol I’m watching all kinds of videos and reading articles and looking through chat rooms prior to my starting of my welding education. I’m 16 and can go to college for welding (for free!) while I’m in high school and I want to make the best impression possible upon my instructor and peers.
This is a real good video ,,
More true to life , real talk too .
Thanks for sharing 👍
Great video, I think the interview at end was great
Don't be afraid of the inspector. The code is spelled out. If you are experienced at welding, then you will recognize what is needed to succeed
Test came out good thanks for the video, stay blessed
I busted my first test but I always take a notepad and write down what the weld looks like how it felt to weld it. Sometimes even take notes on the gap and landing, maybe write down what material it is you know Carbon or Stainless for example what size rod to use what amperage. You know it’s all little factors but if you can learn to eliminate the small things that can mess you up you can focus on the big picture and it’s just laying that metal down being consistent and staying in the groove.
You're to damn technical. All that shit comes naturally once you learn it did you write down how you learned how to ride a bike
