Realistically speaking, we generally buy cars for the car itself and not just the engine. When I was searching for an Evo, I test drove numerous evo8s and 9s, but ended up buying the very first evox I test drove. I convinced myself before hand that I wanted the 4G63 Evo, but after experiencing the evox comfort and added features over the older evos, It was a no brainier that I felt like I was getting more for the money. Fast forward almost 5yrs, my Evo is making around 650whp, still on its original oem never opened t-case, diff , and bone stock trans..forged sleeved engine yes. I made the best choice.. and it's my daily.. I have put over 100k on it in 5 yrs
I have an X tuned to just over 400kw at the wheels, the engine was virtually stock with just a couple of bolt ons, and lasted almost 300,000 km. Eventually the timing chain jumped a tooth and the engine failed, but that's more due to the fact that it was the original chain and it had basically worn out. The majority of the internals (those not busted by the timing chain failure) are still in perfect working order. I still have the car, only the repairs are beyond my means at the moment. One day she'll ride again!
Wish i could have one but i refuse to buy one used as i know people beat the shit out of these cars and the STi subaru is making right now look like a glorified toyota corolla so i think ill never have one don't understand why they stoped making the evo
@@user-fk2si1xc2s Yea its takes more than that. But the evo9 does make the most power with less effort than any other 4g63 mivec makes a big difference . The 4b11 is a smoother more efficient engine but takes way more money to make equal power .
Yes 4G63-T is a legendary engine for a number of years already and it has proven itself from time to time, it holds some of the most impressive records in the motorsport scene be it rally,track racing, and even drag racing. But when mitsubishi made the 4B11 it was actually a product of things that they have learned from the weaknesses of the 4G63-T. So nevertheless, its safe to say that the 4B11 is the result of everything that has always been the weakness of the 4G63-T.
I heavily Agree Osama and it's always good to have a conversation with ya as you know your stuff when it comes to Mitsubishi and that's super dope haha. But honestly I think the 4B11 also took FAR less time to get into the 7's unlike how long it took Evo 8's and 9's with the Evo variant 4G63 that also seemed to be revised from all the DSM's issues as well since most of them have been corrected on the Evo's version of the 63. So I also agree that I think the 4B11 is going to takeover from the 63 in due time because it's seeming to be closer to K series style Semi-Closed deck design to their open design but slightly better and also is an Aluminum block just like the K but the sleeves seem to handle way more as well as the block itself seems to be just as strong as the 63's as you don't need to get a billet reinforcement like the Honda guys do to go over 900whp+ to be reliable
Tbh 4b11t has been my favorite because of the cons with the 4g63t and that now you can make the same power as the evo 8/9 and there cheaper than the evo 8/9 it's a no brainer to go with the evo x now (it looks better anyway)
I own a 09 X 77000km 400hp at engine Driven Evo 7 and 8 Here is my general experience The 4g simply feels more raw and brutal with sudden boosting feels very strong but definitely feel the lag and sluggishness in the lower rpms The Evo X feels definitely more refined less brutal more consistent torque and power band through the revs The turbo lag is minimal and car responds so rapidly to boost and picks up speed to fast it’s shocking After fast it spools and slams through the gears It’s by far the more advanced faster and more reliable engine.
But that's part of what makes the 4G so great in my opinion, I have an Evo IX and I just love the raw nature of it, I love the turbo laag (as stupid as it sounds), and I love the power surge once it finally gets on boost, it just feels so raw and emotional, I love it... (even though it may be objectively worse)
4B11T. AMS, Boostin, Kozmic, SSP, STM, C-West, ETS...I could go on. There are plenty of 650+ Evo X’s out there and the aftermarket for 4G63 is going EOL, Evo X is just getting started now warranties are ending for 2013-2015’s.
The only reason people dont like the 4b11 is because it's in a heavier car. The dislike of the engine borders on the irrational. My choice is 4b is better
There may be better aftermarket support for the 4g63 but the aftermarket for the 4b11 is plenty strong too. You can buy top notch parts for building the motor no problem. It's like comparing a supermarket to a slightly bigger supermarket. Also stock 4b11t at 500hp don't really last all that long. It's mostly torque dependent but pushing 320-340 torques on the stock rods is asking for trouble. I'm sure there's plenty of survivor bias out there but if you want a bulletproof 500-600hp 4b11 do the rods.
My turner at English Racing told me that both engines when fully built are the same in terms of reliability and power and also said a 800 hp 4b11t is a lot more street friendly than a 4g63t bc on the 4g63 if u want to make that power ull have to half or full fill the coolant passages in the block with concrete to help the cylinders from warping but on the 4b11 u change the sleeves
I call bull on that one the way the 4g is built from the factory plenty have gone above and beyond in terms of reliability with the most common mishaps in terms of failure mostly coming from newbie mistakes and neglects in service both of which will completely destroy an engine in minutes or miles depending on the severity and level of said neglect.
@@clarencepollard1253 English racing is the best they build the fastest evos and dsms. 4gs always blow up around 400hp if u don't forge the internals with exception to the evo 8 and 9 are reliable at 500 older 6 bolts and especially 7 bolts 4gs are not reliable at all . The 4b also doesn't have stupid balance shalfs and it has a timing chain that in itself is smarter and more reliable with smarter engineering .

Ultimate layout. 4g63 6 bolt bottom end, 4b11t head with normal front exhaust layout. If Mitsubishi had engineered this engine oh, it would be unstoppable
Ok, to answer your question we first need to specify in what application is the engine used. With new emission standards in Ca for example, the 4b11t will pass the tests at higher HP and Turks. For racing or places where emissions are not a factor, I would take the 4g63t every time. Iron block can handle massive boost and make huge numbers. Reliable????below 500 hp they both are ok.
Awesome video very informative thank you for taking the time to put it out a couple things that I don't know if you mentioned it or not because I'm interrupting the video in the middle is the fact that they changed the 4G63 in 2000+ engines for USDM market they reversed the cylinder head layout and move the engine to the passenger side of the engine compartment rather than the driver side prior and some of the people might not know what a 1g & 2g unless you tell them about the eclipse aka DSM
I think one of the main advantages the 4g63 over the 4b11 is the aftermarket, the 4b11 aftermarket will never be as big , for the simple fact it was not produced very long and in not many numbers comparatively speaking. The 4g63 was produced for almost 20 yrs and they made a gazillion of them , everyone and there brother knows how to modify them , that goes a long way
4b11t is an all around good track racing engine because it's lighter, rigid, and has superior heat management with the semi closed deck design. 4g63t is far superior for drag racing and high hp and torque numbers because it can take massive amounts of abuse without flexing. Both engines have a placement in the Evolution hall of fame. If I was building a drag car, 4g63t all day. For track I'd choose the 4b11t.
The best engine is the one you already own. I picked up an 09 ralliart at an auction for 3700 bucks canadian. Came with the Recaro buckets and the upgraded Rockford Fosgate navigation system.
Can we stop assuming that everything that is "forged" is super strong? Like these could take 400-500hp. The CAST bottom end in the Saab 9000 B234R can take 850hp and didn't even break in that car because he was just testing. It's all about design not just manufacturing process
Well it's not that, but it's just generally the Cast bottom ends usually don't last long even if they CAN do very high power for the most part, so most don't push them like that when they can just get a better part with a better & stronger material to push for a longer amount of time that you risk it breaking far less than you would with a Cast engine or part usually.. Besides, most of the time too, forged parts usually are lighter weight as well which does help
@@jordanprice9285 the lower weight is true and you can get bigger pistons too. But the guy I'm talking about is Robert Uhr from Nordic performance and he has run that engine for quite some time now, stock 9000 parts, he uses a a lot of OEM parts in is racecar.
I must add that from my investigations of crank walk with 4g63 1g and 2g engines were caused by excessive clutch pedal travel. Always use a pedal stop even with a stock clutch.
Can you explain this please? Clutch pedal travel affecting crankshafts...in most cases I would make fun of you while I claim BS but this I want to hear.
@@Crusher103 So your clutch connected to the flywheel which is connected to the crankshaft. while in a normal state, the crank rotates perfect, only if some force is applied from one side, would the crank start to press against the center bearing (the only bearing holding the crank dead center in the journals). over time of pushing the clutch well beyond the needed travel would it start to cut that bearing. A Clutch stop, would reduce the need to push beyond the needed travel.
@@JDMBUILDSJAMAICA After reading this I'm coming to the same conclusion, this is BS. I see where the information is coming from but it is a REACH to think that the force from the clutch causes crankwalk, regardless if its a 4g63 or not. The pressure plate indirectly pushes against the flywheel but never pulls. If this were the case more of clutches causing crank walk issues, NOBODY would use high clamp force pressure plates on any car. The movement in the crank caused but clutch modulation is the result of bad bearings but definitely NOT the cause. No clutch puts enough force on the crank to actual move it, if it does your motor seriously compromised. Whatever that clutch pedal stop your using for is just a band aid to the actual problem which will eventually turn into a hindrance to drive with the already doomed motor. The clutch pedal stop that is being talked about online is actually for people using an Isuzu slave cylinder that changes the clutch pedal travel from stock. People who are doing so are doing it because they have have high clamp load twin plate clutches, they did this to have better clutch modulation.
I own a 1994 eagle talon and honestly I can say the older 4g63t motors are really reliable and parts aren’t hard to get, I personally beleive 4g73t is better in street applications or daily drivers because of its reliability and cool turbo noises
I think age factors into the choice. I'm in my 30's and i prefer the 4g63 because it was one of the best setups for tuners like me when I first started tuning, and i could work on them with a blind fold by now.
I would argue theres no point in talking aftermarket since that makes the possibilities for either near endless and therefore not easy to compare. With that in mind I would argue the 4b11 is better as a stock engine as not only is it more efficient and produces more power its also a cleaner engine (which is why the switch was made in the first place)
I think part of the hate that a lot of 4G63T fanatics had was the 4B11T gave nothing to the past I think more people would have loved it if at least it was an aluminum copy of a 4G63T, or if you could take something on it to make the older 4G63T better moving forward, almost every 4G63T engine advancement via the evos that went forward gave the older engine generation something they could use not so in the case of the 4B11T but still I like both engines to be honest but for different reasons.
It's hard for me to see the choice of engine apart from the rest of the specifications. I have an Evo IX, so at least there you have the "half MIVEC" which does make a noticable difference IMHO (as does the 6-speed, although I hear it's more fragile for higher power applications). I can not complain about throttle response at all (after a serious retune, the standard maps are a bit... weird). I kept it at a conservative 400BHP, and the car is now into its 14th year without missing a beat (daily driver with occasional track days). Could I easily squeeze out another 100BHP? Probably, but I value reliability and peace of mind over the extra oomph.
Well, here's how I look at it. I want an Evo 6, I can't have an Evo 6 because I'm in the US. I do not like the look of the CT9A (Evo 7/8/9) But I do like the look of the Evo X. Therefore I have an Evo X, and 4B11T. I care less about the engine, and more about the car it comes in. But as an aside, people are pushing 650+ stock block in the 4B11T. Both motors are said to have around the same safe power limits stock, and the 4B11T has been well developed; every part you want is out there from multiple companies. You will have no more problem finding parts for one than the other. So it really depends on 2 factors: Which bodystyle do you want? Are you okay with the additional cost of parts for the Evo X? Personally, since I can't have a 6 or even a 5, I answer both questions 'yes'. Again, I would have an Evo 6 if it were possible. I literally have videos on here where I drove an Evo 6 in Japan this summer, and I believe it was stock with exhaust, and I still loved it. I want that car even more. However, my Evo X just got done with a 700 HP build, just waiting on a Sheepy front mount to tie it together. That stock Evo 6 was more fun than my Evo X when it was fully bolt on. Not as quick, but something about it. But that is the car, not the engine. Maybe a little bit of the engine, that Evo 6 sounded good stock, the Evo X notoriously sounds bad.
On the stock exhaust, my X sounded like a noisy vacuum cleaner. I've had two aftermarket exhausts since I bought it, and the one I have now (a Turbo XS 3.5in turbo back) sounds about 1000% better than the OEM exhaust.
someone in the comments said 4g63t was the ak47, i think it is, compared to the 4b11t which would be something like an ar15; 4g63 is more of a heavy duty, proven, less refined, and heavier vs a 4b11 which is lighter, smoother and more refined, but less sturdier
I in particular prefere the 4G63. I have a 2G DSM and the engine is reliable, with a ton of potencial, and a more old-school design and feel, that i like a lot.
I am currently working on doing a 4g63 head swap for my 3g eclipse. I dont plan on doing AWD with it and it is the AK-47 of the 4 cylinder world. They are in a popular demand and kind of hard to get ahold of unlike the 4b11 and no matter how old the motor is, you can find tons of aftermarket parts for them. Plus I havnt seen or heard of any times where a rod has been thrown through the block. Now I am not claiming that a stock 4g63 is throwing down 500-600 whp, but it is possible to get them there like anything else. I dont know, but that's my general opinion on why I think the 4g63 is better than the 4b11.
The 4G63 was in production for nearly 4 decades, not to mention it’s motorsports pedigree. You could shelve a couple spare blocks, crankshafts, driveline components, and never have to worry about running out of hardware for the rest of your life.
4b11t daily here so might be a lil bias but you can bet there's no way in heck that Mitsubishi would step away from the same engine design they have made forever if they didn't have confidence in and believe the 4b11t was better. (better is relative) I mean realistically lighter better on gas updated control over the engine and fixed the one major design flaw of the old engine sounds better in a newer engine to me...
Unfortunately, with that logic, Mitsubishi stepped away from all their good cars because SUVs are better?... Hardly. I'd say they evolved like any manufacturer does, but not always for the better. Look at the 2020 Supra. Toyota went from making probably the most iconic engine in history that wasn't American to outsourcing to BMW of all people for their whole car. So I'd say the 4b11 is a good progression from the 4g63, but the bar is set way too high (regarding performance records set) for the 4B to ever actually prove it's better.

Good video, and all your points are valid. The 4G63 brought to 2.4 liters is unbelievable and reliable. The Evo.9 is what all performance cars should be like, and it makes a reliable daily ride.
Caribbean GTR I have a 2.4 and Broken 4th gear twice. Too much hard hitting TQ. I’m going to try tuning for less Tq more HP.. or spend a lot for a straight cut dog box. Love my 2.4 otherwise.
Personally, I think the 4G63 is an absolutely AMAZING engine considering it's been able to solidify itself over almost 40+ years of tuning to where people compare it to far newer engines like K series Honda's which are doing almost the same kind of thing they were doing and STILL are doing to this day being able to compete at the highest level. BUT, I do think the 4B11 is better simply because it took FAR less time for the 4B11 to get into the 1000whp range, get an Evo X into the 7's bracket in drag racing with far less aftermarket, R&D, and less time to have R&D to even get that far compared to how many years it's taken the 4G63 Evo's to get into the 7's and also the fact that the 4B11 had FAR LESS time to get up to speed with the 63 Evo's being it's 4B11 engine was produced around 2007 which is even LESS time than the rival K series Honda engines took to get into the 7's with how they have been out since 2001/2002 with a 5 year head start! Plus, it's similar to the K series in a lot of ways since it's aluminum block, Timing chain instead of timing belt which is a BIG step up, as well as Dual MIVEC system heads which seem to flow a bit cleaner than the 63 does which is actually kinda cool since it means it's slightly more efficient for air quality which is kinda neat on the low end lol. And I do think if given more time to grow within the tuning community like the 63 did a long time ago, that the 4B11 will be even better than both the 4G63 and K series since it seems to have taken what makes the best of both of those engines basically molded into one singular engine in itself.
kind of a flawed comparison considering the fact that there is much more modern tuning (turbo, fuel, ignition etc) tech available today compared to 10 years ago- so yes it took 'less' time for 4b11 to break into 7's, for example, but that's also because it much newer.
This is one of those situations where there's not really a right answer. It all depends on what your goal and budget are. I would think that an Evo X with 500 whp would be a lot easier to live with as a daily driver. But an Evo X as a drag car adds complexity and therefore difficulty in getting what you want out of it. Pretty sure this is why there are plenty of 8 and 7 second DSM's and like one 8 second Evo X. On the flip side a 500 whp daily driven DSM is not that comfortable. I know. I've had like 10. It's not hard at all to make a 500 whp DSM. But unless you upgrade everything you'll always be breaking something. Everything from shifter bushings to clutch fork alignment. Rear subframe bushings to simple drive belt brackets. These cars weren't very efficient in comparison to today's performance vehicles. But that's what made them so fun and addicting to modify. Now a drag DSM is perfect for it's simplicity and aftermarket support. All the homework has been done for you. Tuning, suspension settings everything from radiators to transfer cases is available. And most of it can be done even if you've never done a timing belt. So it all depends really. My 20 year old self wants a DSM. But my current 40 year old self would rather have the comfortability of an Evo X. Remember a DSM made around 200 hp stock. An evo X makes close to 300 stock. Making 500 to the wheels isn't that hard.
I have a 1991 talon tsi 4g63T AWD with ecmlink V3 launch control and anti lag. Dump the clutch at 4500 and let her eat over and over the 1g dsm is in my opinion the strongest setup for the money a evo and 2g are all the same problems with twice the price

If you invested a lot in your 4G, keep it. Otherwise get an EVO X, you won't regret! It's the most amazing car I've ever had, fun to drive, easy to work, a monster in the track, eats curves like no other car, shines in gravel and dirt, it's an overall amazing project!
For me, the 4G63 is the better engine. My car is a 1990, which means it is safety and emissions exempt here in Illinois. We can get away with a lot more stuff than the 4B11 guys! ;)
I’m partial to the 4G63 as I own an Evo 8, which I grew up in as it was my mom’s before me. Pretty much fully built, but way out of tune. Recently sputtered out and wouldn’t start again. I’m wondering if this “crank walk” is the culprit. 135k on the motor seems like it’d have some wear.
Coming from a tuned ralliart with basic bolt ons. At 275 whp and 318 wtq and now I have the evo 9 mr. Think it’s kind of a hard choice. And I say that because tho the 4b11t is more modern with dual mivec and more low end torque. The X was a much heavier car. And the carbon buildup issue on DI engines is a thing. But also being full aluminum doesn’t just have weight advantages and cooling advantages, but overheating cast/aluminum vs full aluminum, the cast is more likely to warp the head as the metal expands at different rates. I ran the 4b11T pretty hard never had any issues up until the 78k miles which I had it from new. The Mr and ralliart both share same SST trans which is a different topic but in the aspect of applications the engine is in, I think is a fair thing to bring up. Built the SST really can utilize the mivec system with overlap and better turbo better. Can it handle as much power as the standard 5 speeds not really. The X is also a wider car and comes with AYC in the states whereas the 7-9 did not. The X also stock for stock shows consistently faster lap times. So I think I’m regards to both the engines advantages and vehicles their in. Don’t hate me but I think if your keeping the engine from 300-400 whp range I feel like the 9 with AYC could probably make better use of the 4b11T than the X does. Looks, power and sounds 4g63 hands down is better. But from a performance standpoint I think it’s hard compare the engines when the IX and X are pretty much completely different cars competing in different eras If I’m choosing the car based of potential, aftermarket, and looks. IX every time
If more people went with the 4b, chances are it would probably be better. However, since the 4g has a longer history of people working on it, tuning/modding it, of course it's gonna be the "better" engine. If/when, someone takes the 4b and does what people did with the 4g, chances are it will be better _(if it surpassed its older counterpart when modded)_
I am in the process of getting rid of my 4B11. But do not know what to go with, since I have a 2015 Lancer ES. This video was very insightful. There has been a lot of talk with my car buddies about going 4G63T, but this video makes me lean towards 4B11T. There was also talk about doing a RWD Lancer, which is basically unheard of. I dont really know. Any help would be awesome if yall wanna comment.
Wait...you have a Lancer ES. You don't have a 4B11 to get rid of. Even the GTS doesn't have the 4B11T in it. Only RA and Evo. Sell the ES, buy an RA in good health and have the SST rebuilt. Make ridiculous power for the money and call it a day.
@@roguetune03 I evo swapped the engine. 469 wheel on e85 before the clutch started slipping so we stopped the tune. Currently working on making it AWD.

Let’s just be real here. 4g63 was perfected over 30 years. The 4g63 head can run more aggressive cams and lift. Your limited on 4b11 on how aggressive you can go because of the bucket design. You don’t have to sleeve the block. There’s a 7 sec awd colt with a wet 4g63 block. Yes you can sleeve 4b11 but have fun when one of your sleeves drop. It’s just one more part to worry about. Any motors got potential but 4g63 are the sbc in the import scene. 4g63 has the stick shift 1/4 mile record with a 7.04 with a best of 215 mph on that car. Jett racing running 6.20 in the 1/4. It also has the 1/2 mile record at 213 mph. 4g63 is a power house and it’s made history. It’s dumb to even compare them. It’s like comparing the 2jz and the b58🤦♂️. What’s the point
I have high hopes for the 4b11 that mitsubishi thought it was good enough to take place of the 4g63 with the new regulations but I do have the question of if one of the reasons that the 4g63 is considered the better motor is because of the aftermarket backing. which one would be better just looking at the stock motor or looking as if both motors had the same aftermarket backing?
Iron block and fully closed deck wins every time. Nothing against the 4b11 but the evo 9 was amazing. I personally ran an 11.67 @116 on the stock turbo full bolt ons c16 and 28psi.
That's what you would get from an Evo X with intake/exhaust/pump/1000cc injectors and a tune. Stock everything else. Not even close to FBO. The X is not to be underestimated but everyone does. Its ok. My dry sleeves are going to outrun a cemented deck in my same HP range.
4G63T, no brainer.. Was made in a time when the company was still active in, and passionate about Motorsport. The cylinder head of the 4G63T was developed by HKS for the four-wheel drive, Group B Starion. Once Group B was canned, the Starion was shelved but they moved the tech onto the Galant VR4. The Iron Heart went on to receive much love from factory race teams powering the Eclipse/laser/Talon and Lancer Evolution. I don't believe the 4B11T ever had the support of Mitsubishi in any Motorsport endeavors. 500 horsepower on a stock block?🤣 try 640, and that was a few years ago. The only caveat being ARP head studs and a multi-layer steel head gasket. Mitsubishi needs to ditch the current president and install someone who appreciates what they have done, what they are capable of, and wants to return to their former glory days of innovation.
Well, if aftermarket not taken in hand, the 4B11t Is better than the 4G63t. This is because it has better cooling, and even though the block is aluminum rather iron, Mitsubishi made sure that it would as strong as the previous iron block, so its as strong, so tunability power and stock power is almost as same as the 4G63t if not better for the 4B11t. I think everyone chooses the 4G63t simply because it's more famous, or because it has more legacy. Heck, even Daimler-Chrysler, who owned Mitsubishi in 2007(release year of Evo 10), were considering to pull the funding from Mitsubishi for the 4B11t! Seriously, the 4B11t is like that unloved middle child, except in this case it's the youngest child.

The 6 bolt 4g63 is superior as far these go, it was a pure breed race motor with no compromise at the time it was made, hence those massive connecting rod caps, and closed deck design, the 4b11 was an attempt at making an efficient 4g63 that could pass emissions as well as race. So, open deck, smaller connecting rods, thiner pistons. All I'm saying is the 4g63 was built to be a durable power house and that's it, they didn't have to conform to what's gonna save gas, or produce less emissions at idle, cause that wasn't the priority, just durable and fast.
I’ve rode in an evo 9 and an evo 10, and with a Cobb stage 2 tune and a hood clutch, it definitely scoots. The 4B11 doesn’t get the credit it deserves for sure.
I would say 4g63t is better because it’s not an aluminum block and the design is pretty much straight forward the 4b isn’t a bad motor I just think the 4g has more pedigree and less flawed except the crank walk issue
While the 4B11 is a strong motor and this is just going over the stock form, many timers refuse to go above 450 on the 4b11 because it is known to bend rods once it’s above 450ft-lbs or torque
4g63 is better because the engine base is better and there are more performance engine part. which can modify the engine more, but the 4g63 head and 4b11 head can be combined with the 4g69 block 2.4 liter (with 4g63 head) and the 4b12 block 2.4 liter (with 4b11 head) both as well.
i believe the 4g63 is superior. im mainly talking about the 6 bolt here the early 7 bolt i believe to be the most troublesome. the 4g63 is made of iron and iron is more forgiving metal, the 6 bolt block is extremely overbuilt and strong. ive seen folks runnin 1000hp no issues and i myslef have a 6 bolt runnin 450whp daily and i whoop it and it gives me no issues at all. another big plus side of the 4g63 is its simplicity, its more simple than the 4b11 so alot less to go wrong. and another plus side for engine performance is the fact that it runs a timing belt, and i say this because this means no engine harmonics are transfered to the valvetrain which is excellent for reliability especially at radical rpms. then theres the aftermarket and the fact there are so many more 4gs out there to be had. also im a mitsubishi tech and work on both pretty often. im no hater of the 4b11 and i believe that in na form for daily commuting the 4b11 is more friendly as it has better design for cheap daily commuting. its easier to keep cool, its more powerful, its chain driven so no frequent timing belts, its lighter and more fuel efficient just really a great na daily platform. just my 2 cents 🤷♂️
Crank Walk aside 63 has proven itself in the trenches of motorsports. B11 is the Civic of the Evos. It may have a few technological advancements & be lighter pound for pound but if they were to do a real world block stress test on the engine where skys the limit on HP, the 63s bottom end will remain together long after the b11 will have twisted & grenaded its soft aluminum block. It's just physicist. Now make it billet with cryogenic treatment. Might have a chance but my money's still on the 63.

that was a specialty manufacturer mod edition of the car. not very high numbers of those. think the English version of "Shelby" but for evos. highly doubtful to ever find one for sale, and if so, extremely overpriced.
4g63t because it comes in the Evo 8s and 9s. Not to mention when you see a evo x on the streets it’s usually just basic bolt one.. you see evo 8s and 9s and they might be pushing 550 plus whp.
4g63 this isnt even a real question. It just more versite and has much great access to parts. Any 4g series block is changeable with each other. 4g64 etc.
i've tracked a 305whp 4b11t (my own ralliart - single scroll turbo) and a 360whp 4g63t (my ex flatmate's evo 8). i can tell you on the track, i only needed to stop every once in a while for my pathetic ralliart stock brakes. but with my mate's evo 8, enegine overheats every 2 laps. it's insane. i don't want an engine that can seemingly make reliable power but need extensive down time in order to do so. expecially evos, they are made for cornering with ridiculous speed in low tractions. the tricked out central diff and rear diff imo show the real intention behind the design philosophy. it's almost sad so many people think a car with 2L 4cyl engine is meant for dragracing.
Having raced a 1g eclipse at Grattan raceway in Mi, for a track-day event. Overheating is not an issue on 4g63t's, there likely was an issue with his cooling system.
4g63t is better , just hone your block bores to 86.5mm and put a 4g64 crank in it. Then you've got a 2.3L that will give more torque down low than a variable valve timed , twin scroll turboed 4b11t .
This is like when the touch screen phone came in. Some people were sceptical because it was new and unknown, but it eventually proved to me better. Saying that to say the 4B11 is newer and will eventually be best, well as long as people modify it.

Realistically speaking, we generally buy cars for the car itself and not just the engine. When I was searching for an Evo, I test drove numerous evo8s and 9s, but ended up buying the very first evox I test drove. I convinced myself before hand that I wanted the 4G63 Evo, but after experiencing the evox comfort and added features over the older evos, It was a no brainier that I felt like I was getting more for the money. Fast forward almost 5yrs, my Evo is making around 650whp, still on its original oem never opened t-case, diff , and bone stock trans..forged sleeved engine yes. I made the best choice.. and it's my daily.. I have put over 100k on it in 5 yrs
I have an X tuned to just over 400kw at the wheels, the engine was virtually stock with just a couple of bolt ons, and lasted almost 300,000 km. Eventually the timing chain jumped a tooth and the engine failed, but that's more due to the fact that it was the original chain and it had basically worn out. The majority of the internals (those not busted by the timing chain failure) are still in perfect working order.
I still have the car, only the repairs are beyond my means at the moment. One day she'll ride again!

Yes 4G63-T is a legendary engine for a number of years already and it has proven itself from time to time, it holds some of the most impressive records in the motorsport scene be it rally,track racing, and even drag racing. But when mitsubishi made the 4B11 it was actually a product of things that they have learned from the weaknesses of the 4G63-T. So nevertheless, its safe to say that the 4B11 is the result of everything that has always been the weakness of the 4G63-T.

I heavily Agree Osama and it's always good to have a conversation with ya as you know your stuff when it comes to Mitsubishi and that's super dope haha. But honestly I think the 4B11 also took FAR less time to get into the 7's unlike how long it took Evo 8's and 9's with the Evo variant 4G63 that also seemed to be revised from all the DSM's issues as well since most of them have been corrected on the Evo's version of the 63. So I also agree that I think the 4B11 is going to takeover from the 63 in due time because it's seeming to be closer to K series style Semi-Closed deck design to their open design but slightly better and also is an Aluminum block just like the K but the sleeves seem to handle way more as well as the block itself seems to be just as strong as the 63's as you don't need to get a billet reinforcement like the Honda guys do to go over 900whp+ to be reliable
Tbh 4b11t has been my favorite because of the cons with the 4g63t and that now you can make the same power as the evo 8/9 and there cheaper than the evo 8/9 it's a no brainer to go with the evo x now (it looks better anyway)

Here is my general experience
The 4g simply feels more raw and brutal with sudden boosting feels very strong but definitely feel the lag and sluggishness in the lower rpms
The Evo X feels definitely more refined less brutal more consistent torque and power band through the revs
The turbo lag is minimal and car responds so rapidly to boost and picks up speed to fast it’s shocking After fast it spools and slams through the gears
It’s by far the more advanced faster and more reliable engine.
But that's part of what makes the 4G so great in my opinion, I have an Evo IX and I just love the raw nature of it, I love the turbo laag (as stupid as it sounds), and I love the power surge once it finally gets on boost, it just feels so raw and emotional, I love it... (even though it may be objectively worse)
4B11T. AMS, Boostin, Kozmic, SSP, STM, C-West, ETS...I could go on. There are plenty of 650+ Evo X’s out there and the aftermarket for 4G63 is going EOL, Evo X is just getting started now warranties are ending for 2013-2015’s.
From galant vr4 until now... Evo x... I like them all..
The only reason people dont like the 4b11 is because it's in a heavier car. The dislike of the engine borders on the irrational. My choice is 4b is better

There may be better aftermarket support for the 4g63 but the aftermarket for the 4b11 is plenty strong too. You can buy top notch parts for building the motor no problem. It's like comparing a supermarket to a slightly bigger supermarket. Also stock 4b11t at 500hp don't really last all that long. It's mostly torque dependent but pushing 320-340 torques on the stock rods is asking for trouble. I'm sure there's plenty of survivor bias out there but if you want a bulletproof 500-600hp 4b11 do the rods.

My turner at English Racing told me that both engines when fully built are the same in terms of reliability and power and also said a 800 hp 4b11t is a lot more street friendly than a 4g63t bc on the 4g63 if u want to make that power ull have to half or full fill the coolant passages in the block with concrete to help the cylinders from warping but on the 4b11 u change the sleeves

I call bull on that one the way the 4g is built from the factory plenty have gone above and beyond in terms of reliability with the most common mishaps in terms of failure mostly coming from newbie mistakes and neglects in service both of which will completely destroy an engine in minutes or miles depending on the severity and level of said neglect.

The 4b also doesn't have stupid balance shalfs and it has a timing chain that in itself is smarter and more reliable with smarter engineering .

Ok, to answer your question we first need to specify in what application is the engine used. With new emission standards in Ca for example, the 4b11t will pass the tests at higher HP and Turks. For racing or places where emissions are not a factor, I would take the 4g63t every time. Iron block can handle massive boost and make huge numbers. Reliable????below 500 hp they both are ok.
Awesome video very informative thank you for taking the time to put it out a couple things that I don't know if you mentioned it or not because I'm interrupting the video in the middle is the fact that they changed the 4G63 in 2000+ engines for USDM market they reversed the cylinder head layout and move the engine to the passenger side of the engine compartment rather than the driver side prior and some of the people might not know what a 1g & 2g unless you tell them about the eclipse aka DSM

I think one of the main advantages the 4g63 over the 4b11 is the aftermarket, the 4b11 aftermarket will never be as big , for the simple fact it was not produced very long and in not many numbers comparatively speaking. The 4g63 was produced for almost 20 yrs and they made a gazillion of them , everyone and there brother knows how to modify them , that goes a long way
4b11t is an all around good track racing engine because it's lighter, rigid, and has superior heat management with the semi closed deck design. 4g63t is far superior for drag racing and high hp and torque numbers because it can take massive amounts of abuse without flexing. Both engines have a placement in the Evolution hall of fame. If I was building a drag car, 4g63t all day. For track I'd choose the 4b11t.
The best engine is the one you already own. I picked up an 09 ralliart at an auction for 3700 bucks canadian. Came with the Recaro buckets and the upgraded Rockford Fosgate navigation system.
Can we stop assuming that everything that is "forged" is super strong? Like these could take 400-500hp. The CAST bottom end in the Saab 9000 B234R can take 850hp and didn't even break in that car because he was just testing. It's all about design not just manufacturing process

Well it's not that, but it's just generally the Cast bottom ends usually don't last long even if they CAN do very high power for the most part, so most don't push them like that when they can just get a better part with a better & stronger material to push for a longer amount of time that you risk it breaking far less than you would with a Cast engine or part usually.. Besides, most of the time too, forged parts usually are lighter weight as well which does help
@@jordanprice9285 the lower weight is true and you can get bigger pistons too. But the guy I'm talking about is Robert Uhr from Nordic performance and he has run that engine for quite some time now, stock 9000 parts, he uses a a lot of OEM parts in is racecar.
The japanese seem to like forging. I know toyota does a lot of forging to reduce weight and material used.

I must add that from my investigations of crank walk with 4g63 1g and 2g engines were caused by excessive clutch pedal travel. Always use a pedal stop even with a stock clutch.

@@Crusher103 So your clutch connected to the flywheel which is connected to the crankshaft. while in a normal state, the crank rotates perfect, only if some force is applied from one side, would the crank start to press against the center bearing (the only bearing holding the crank dead center in the journals). over time of pushing the clutch well beyond the needed travel would it start to cut that bearing. A Clutch stop, would reduce the need to push beyond the needed travel.

I see where the information is coming from but it is a REACH to think that the force from the clutch causes crankwalk, regardless if its a 4g63 or not. The pressure plate indirectly pushes against the flywheel but never pulls. If this were the case more of clutches causing crank walk issues, NOBODY would use high clamp force pressure plates on any car. The movement in the crank caused but clutch modulation is the result of bad bearings but definitely NOT the cause. No clutch puts enough force on the crank to actual move it, if it does your motor seriously compromised. Whatever that clutch pedal stop your using for is just a band aid to the actual problem which will eventually turn into a hindrance to drive with the already doomed motor. The clutch pedal stop that is being talked about online is actually for people using an Isuzu slave cylinder that changes the clutch pedal travel from stock. People who are doing so are doing it because they have have high clamp load twin plate clutches, they did this to have better clutch modulation.
I own a 1994 eagle talon and honestly I can say the older 4g63t motors are really reliable and parts aren’t hard to get, I personally beleive 4g73t is better in street applications or daily drivers because of its reliability and cool turbo noises
I think age factors into the choice. I'm in my 30's and i prefer the 4g63 because it was one of the best setups for tuners like me when I first started tuning, and i could work on them with a blind fold by now.

I would argue theres no point in talking aftermarket since that makes the possibilities for either near endless and therefore not easy to compare. With that in mind I would argue the 4b11 is better as a stock engine as not only is it more efficient and produces more power its also a cleaner engine (which is why the switch was made in the first place)

I think part of the hate that a lot of 4G63T fanatics had was the 4B11T gave nothing to the past I think more people would have loved it if at least it was an aluminum copy of a 4G63T, or if you could take something on it to make the older 4G63T better moving forward, almost every 4G63T engine advancement via the evos that went forward gave the older engine generation something they could use not so in the case of the 4B11T but still I like both engines to be honest but for different reasons.
It's hard for me to see the choice of engine apart from the rest of the specifications. I have an Evo IX, so at least there you have the "half MIVEC" which does make a noticable difference IMHO (as does the 6-speed, although I hear it's more fragile for higher power applications). I can not complain about throttle response at all (after a serious retune, the standard maps are a bit... weird). I kept it at a conservative 400BHP, and the car is now into its 14th year without missing a beat (daily driver with occasional track days). Could I easily squeeze out another 100BHP? Probably, but I value reliability and peace of mind over the extra oomph.

Well, here's how I look at it. I want an Evo 6, I can't have an Evo 6 because I'm in the US. I do not like the look of the CT9A (Evo 7/8/9) But I do like the look of the Evo X. Therefore I have an Evo X, and 4B11T.
I care less about the engine, and more about the car it comes in. But as an aside, people are pushing 650+ stock block in the 4B11T. Both motors are said to have around the same safe power limits stock, and the 4B11T has been well developed; every part you want is out there from multiple companies. You will have no more problem finding parts for one than the other. So it really depends on 2 factors: Which bodystyle do you want? Are you okay with the additional cost of parts for the Evo X? Personally, since I can't have a 6 or even a 5, I answer both questions 'yes'.
Again, I would have an Evo 6 if it were possible. I literally have videos on here where I drove an Evo 6 in Japan this summer, and I believe it was stock with exhaust, and I still loved it. I want that car even more. However, my Evo X just got done with a 700 HP build, just waiting on a Sheepy front mount to tie it together. That stock Evo 6 was more fun than my Evo X when it was fully bolt on. Not as quick, but something about it. But that is the car, not the engine. Maybe a little bit of the engine, that Evo 6 sounded good stock, the Evo X notoriously sounds bad.
On the stock exhaust, my X sounded like a noisy vacuum cleaner. I've had two aftermarket exhausts since I bought it, and the one I have now (a Turbo XS 3.5in turbo back) sounds about 1000% better than the OEM exhaust.

I in particular prefere the 4G63. I have a 2G DSM and the engine is reliable, with a ton of potencial, and a more old-school design and feel, that i like a lot.
I am currently working on doing a 4g63 head swap for my 3g eclipse. I dont plan on doing AWD with it and it is the AK-47 of the 4 cylinder world. They are in a popular demand and kind of hard to get ahold of unlike the 4b11 and no matter how old the motor is, you can find tons of aftermarket parts for them. Plus I havnt seen or heard of any times where a rod has been thrown through the block. Now I am not claiming that a stock 4g63 is throwing down 500-600 whp, but it is possible to get them there like anything else. I dont know, but that's my general opinion on why I think the 4g63 is better than the 4b11.
The 4G63 was in production for nearly 4 decades, not to mention it’s motorsports pedigree. You could shelve a couple spare blocks, crankshafts, driveline components, and never have to worry about running out of hardware for the rest of your life.
4b11t daily here so might be a lil bias but you can bet there's no way in heck that Mitsubishi would step away from the same engine design they have made forever if they didn't have confidence in and believe the 4b11t was better. (better is relative) I mean realistically lighter better on gas updated control over the engine and fixed the one major design flaw of the old engine sounds better in a newer engine to me...
Unfortunately, with that logic, Mitsubishi stepped away from all their good cars because SUVs are better?... Hardly. I'd say they evolved like any manufacturer does, but not always for the better. Look at the 2020 Supra. Toyota went from making probably the most iconic engine in history that wasn't American to outsourcing to BMW of all people for their whole car. So I'd say the 4b11 is a good progression from the 4g63, but the bar is set way too high (regarding performance records set) for the 4B to ever actually prove it's better.

I have a 2.4 and Broken 4th gear twice. Too much hard hitting TQ. I’m going to try tuning for less Tq more HP.. or spend a lot for a straight cut dog box. Love my 2.4 otherwise.
Personally, I think the 4G63 is an absolutely AMAZING engine considering it's been able to solidify itself over almost 40+ years of tuning to where people compare it to far newer engines like K series Honda's which are doing almost the same kind of thing they were doing and STILL are doing to this day being able to compete at the highest level.
BUT, I do think the 4B11 is better simply because it took FAR less time for the 4B11 to get into the 1000whp range, get an Evo X into the 7's bracket in drag racing with far less aftermarket, R&D, and less time to have R&D to even get that far compared to how many years it's taken the 4G63 Evo's to get into the 7's and also the fact that the 4B11 had FAR LESS time to get up to speed with the 63 Evo's being it's 4B11 engine was produced around 2007 which is even LESS time than the rival K series Honda engines took to get into the 7's with how they have been out since 2001/2002 with a 5 year head start! Plus, it's similar to the K series in a lot of ways since it's aluminum block, Timing chain instead of timing belt which is a BIG step up, as well as Dual MIVEC system heads which seem to flow a bit cleaner than the 63 does which is actually kinda cool since it means it's slightly more efficient for air quality which is kinda neat on the low end lol.
And I do think if given more time to grow within the tuning community like the 63 did a long time ago, that the 4B11 will be even better than both the 4G63 and K series since it seems to have taken what makes the best of both of those engines basically molded into one singular engine in itself.

This is one of those situations where there's not really a right answer. It all depends on what your goal and budget are. I would think that an Evo X with 500 whp would be a lot easier to live with as a daily driver. But an Evo X as a drag car adds complexity and therefore difficulty in getting what you want out of it. Pretty sure this is why there are plenty of 8 and 7 second DSM's and like one 8 second Evo X. On the flip side a 500 whp daily driven DSM is not that comfortable. I know. I've had like 10. It's not hard at all to make a 500 whp DSM. But unless you upgrade everything you'll always be breaking something. Everything from shifter bushings to clutch fork alignment. Rear subframe bushings to simple drive belt brackets. These cars weren't very efficient in comparison to today's performance vehicles. But that's what made them so fun and addicting to modify. Now a drag DSM is perfect for it's simplicity and aftermarket support. All the homework has been done for you. Tuning, suspension settings everything from radiators to transfer cases is available. And most of it can be done even if you've never done a timing belt. So it all depends really. My 20 year old self wants a DSM. But my current 40 year old self would rather have the comfortability of an Evo X. Remember a DSM made around 200 hp stock. An evo X makes close to 300 stock. Making 500 to the wheels isn't that hard.
I have a 1991 talon tsi 4g63T AWD with ecmlink V3 launch control and anti lag. Dump the clutch at 4500 and let her eat over and over the 1g dsm is in my opinion the strongest setup for the money a evo and 2g are all the same problems with twice the price

If you invested a lot in your 4G, keep it. Otherwise get an EVO X, you won't regret! It's the most amazing car I've ever had, fun to drive, easy to work, a monster in the track, eats curves like no other car, shines in gravel and dirt, it's an overall amazing project!
For me, the 4G63 is the better engine. My car is a 1990, which means it is safety and emissions exempt here in Illinois. We can get away with a lot more stuff than the 4B11 guys! ;)
I’m partial to the 4G63 as I own an Evo 8, which I grew up in as it was my mom’s before me. Pretty much fully built, but way out of tune. Recently sputtered out and wouldn’t start again. I’m wondering if this “crank walk” is the culprit. 135k on the motor seems like it’d have some wear.

Coming from a tuned ralliart with basic bolt ons. At 275 whp and 318 wtq and now I have the evo 9 mr. Think it’s kind of a hard choice. And I say that because tho the 4b11t is more modern with dual mivec and more low end torque. The X was a much heavier car. And the carbon buildup issue on DI engines is a thing. But also being full aluminum doesn’t just have weight advantages and cooling advantages, but overheating cast/aluminum vs full aluminum, the cast is more likely to warp the head as the metal expands at different rates. I ran the 4b11T pretty hard never had any issues up until the 78k miles which I had it from new. The Mr and ralliart both share same SST trans which is a different topic but in the aspect of applications the engine is in, I think is a fair thing to bring up. Built the SST really can utilize the mivec system with overlap and better turbo better. Can it handle as much power as the standard 5 speeds not really. The X is also a wider car and comes with AYC in the states whereas the 7-9 did not.
The X also stock for stock shows consistently faster lap times.
So I think I’m regards to both the engines advantages and vehicles their in. Don’t hate me but I think if your keeping the engine from 300-400 whp range I feel like the 9 with AYC could probably make better use of the 4b11T than the X does. Looks, power and sounds 4g63 hands down is better. But from a performance standpoint I think it’s hard compare the engines when the IX and X are pretty much completely different cars competing in different eras
If I’m choosing the car based of potential, aftermarket, and looks. IX every time
If more people went with the 4b, chances are it would probably be better. However, since the 4g has a longer history of people working on it, tuning/modding it, of course it's gonna be the "better" engine.
If/when, someone takes the 4b and does what people did with the 4g, chances are it will be better _(if it surpassed its older counterpart when modded)_
I am in the process of getting rid of my 4B11. But do not know what to go with, since I have a 2015 Lancer ES. This video was very insightful. There has been a lot of talk with my car buddies about going 4G63T, but this video makes me lean towards 4B11T. There was also talk about doing a RWD Lancer, which is basically unheard of. I dont really know. Any help would be awesome if yall wanna comment.
Wait...you have a Lancer ES. You don't have a 4B11 to get rid of. Even the GTS doesn't have the 4B11T in it. Only RA and Evo. Sell the ES, buy an RA in good health and have the SST rebuilt. Make ridiculous power for the money and call it a day.
@@roguetune03 I evo swapped the engine. 469 wheel on e85 before the clutch started slipping so we stopped the tune. Currently working on making it AWD.

Let’s just be real here. 4g63 was perfected over 30 years. The 4g63 head can run more aggressive cams and lift. Your limited on 4b11 on how aggressive you can go because of the bucket design. You don’t have to sleeve the block. There’s a 7 sec awd colt with a wet 4g63 block. Yes you can sleeve 4b11 but have fun when one of your sleeves drop. It’s just one more part to worry about. Any motors got potential but 4g63 are the sbc in the import scene. 4g63 has the stick shift 1/4 mile record with a 7.04 with a best of 215 mph on that car. Jett racing running 6.20 in the 1/4. It also has the 1/2 mile record at 213 mph. 4g63 is a power house and it’s made history. It’s dumb to even compare them. It’s like comparing the 2jz and the b58🤦♂️. What’s the point

I have high hopes for the 4b11 that mitsubishi thought it was good enough to take place of the 4g63 with the new regulations but I do have the question of if one of the reasons that the 4g63 is considered the better motor is because of the aftermarket backing. which one would be better just looking at the stock motor or looking as if both motors had the same aftermarket backing?

Iron block and fully closed deck wins every time. Nothing against the 4b11 but the evo 9 was amazing. I personally ran an 11.67 @116 on the stock turbo full bolt ons c16 and 28psi.
That's what you would get from an Evo X with intake/exhaust/pump/1000cc injectors and a tune. Stock everything else. Not even close to FBO. The X is not to be underestimated but everyone does. Its ok. My dry sleeves are going to outrun a cemented deck in my same HP range.
4G63T, no brainer..
Was made in a time when the company was still active in, and passionate about Motorsport. The cylinder head of the 4G63T was developed by HKS for the four-wheel drive, Group B Starion. Once Group B was canned, the Starion was shelved but they moved the tech onto the Galant VR4. The Iron Heart went on to receive much love from factory race teams powering the Eclipse/laser/Talon and Lancer Evolution. I don't believe the 4B11T ever had the support of Mitsubishi in any Motorsport endeavors.
500 horsepower on a stock block?🤣 try 640, and that was a few years ago. The only caveat being ARP head studs and a multi-layer steel head gasket. Mitsubishi needs to ditch the current president and install someone who appreciates what they have done, what they are capable of, and wants to return to their former glory days of innovation.
4b11t is a better all round engine it just is, having said that theres nothing wrong with a 4g63
Well, if aftermarket not taken in hand, the 4B11t Is better than the 4G63t.
This is because it has better cooling, and even though the block is aluminum rather iron, Mitsubishi made sure that it would as strong as the previous iron block, so its as strong, so tunability power and stock power is almost as same as the 4G63t if not better for the 4B11t.
I think everyone chooses the 4G63t simply because it's more famous, or because it has more legacy.
Heck, even Daimler-Chrysler, who owned Mitsubishi in 2007(release year of Evo 10), were considering to pull the funding from Mitsubishi for the 4B11t!
Seriously, the 4B11t is like that unloved middle child, except in this case it's the youngest child.

The 6 bolt 4g63 is superior as far these go, it was a pure breed race motor with no compromise at the time it was made, hence those massive connecting rod caps, and closed deck design, the 4b11 was an attempt at making an efficient 4g63 that could pass emissions as well as race. So, open deck, smaller connecting rods, thiner pistons. All I'm saying is the 4g63 was built to be a durable power house and that's it, they didn't have to conform to what's gonna save gas, or produce less emissions at idle, cause that wasn't the priority, just durable and fast.
The 4g63s got TDOH5 flanged turbos too

4G63 is better since it's the only one of the two that has run mid 6s at 223 mph.
just because a fully built one can run mid 6s doesn’t mean that in stock form it’s better than the other and vice versa
I’ve rode in an evo 9 and an evo 10, and with a Cobb stage 2 tune and a hood clutch, it definitely scoots. The 4B11 doesn’t get the credit it deserves for sure.
I work on the 4G63 industrial engine that run on LP gas. They are durable but not the most durable in the industry.
I would say 4g63t is better because it’s not an aluminum block and the design is pretty much straight forward the 4b isn’t a bad motor I just think the 4g has more pedigree and less flawed except the crank walk issue

While the 4B11 is a strong motor and this is just going over the stock form, many timers refuse to go above 450 on the 4b11 because it is known to bend rods once it’s above 450ft-lbs or torque

4g63 is better because the engine base is better and there are more performance engine part. which can modify the engine more, but the 4g63 head and 4b11 head can be combined with the 4g69 block 2.4 liter (with 4g63 head) and the 4b12 block 2.4 liter (with 4b11 head) both as well.
i believe the 4g63 is superior. im mainly talking about the 6 bolt here the early 7 bolt i believe to be the most troublesome. the 4g63 is made of iron and iron is more forgiving metal, the 6 bolt block is extremely overbuilt and strong. ive seen folks runnin 1000hp no issues and i myslef have a 6 bolt runnin 450whp daily and i whoop it and it gives me no issues at all. another big plus side of the 4g63 is its simplicity, its more simple than the 4b11 so alot less to go wrong. and another plus side for engine performance is the fact that it runs a timing belt, and i say this because this means no engine harmonics are transfered to the valvetrain which is excellent for reliability especially at radical rpms. then theres the aftermarket and the fact there are so many more 4gs out there to be had. also im a mitsubishi tech and work on both pretty often. im no hater of the 4b11 and i believe that in na form for daily commuting the 4b11 is more friendly as it has better design for cheap daily commuting. its easier to keep cool, its more powerful, its chain driven so no frequent timing belts, its lighter and more fuel efficient just really a great na daily platform. just my 2 cents 🤷♂️
Crank Walk aside 63 has proven itself in the trenches of motorsports. B11 is the Civic of the Evos. It may have a few technological advancements & be lighter pound for pound but if they were to do a real world block stress test on the engine where skys the limit on HP, the 63s bottom end will remain together long after the b11 will have twisted & grenaded its soft aluminum block. It's just physicist. Now make it billet with cryogenic treatment. Might have a chance but my money's still on the 63.

4:20 i see you used hp #'s for the 4b11t from the evo x fq400 version but you failed to include the evo 8 version 4g63t made 405 hp in the evo 8 fq400.
that was a specialty manufacturer mod edition of the car. not very high numbers of those. think the English version of "Shelby" but for evos. highly doubtful to ever find one for sale, and if so, extremely overpriced.

4g63t because it comes in the Evo 8s and 9s. Not to mention when you see a evo x on the streets it’s usually just basic bolt one.. you see evo 8s and 9s and they might be pushing 550 plus whp.

4g63 this isnt even a real question. It just more versite and has much great access to parts. Any 4g series block is changeable with each other. 4g64 etc.
4g63t vs 4b11t which is better
i've tracked a 305whp 4b11t (my own ralliart - single scroll turbo) and a 360whp 4g63t (my ex flatmate's evo 8). i can tell you on the track, i only needed to stop every once in a while for my pathetic ralliart stock brakes. but with my mate's evo 8, enegine overheats every 2 laps. it's insane. i don't want an engine that can seemingly make reliable power but need extensive down time in order to do so. expecially evos, they are made for cornering with ridiculous speed in low tractions. the tricked out central diff and rear diff imo show the real intention behind the design philosophy. it's almost sad so many people think a car with 2L 4cyl engine is meant for dragracing.
Having raced a 1g eclipse at Grattan raceway in Mi, for a track-day event. Overheating is not an issue on 4g63t's, there likely was an issue with his cooling system.
4G is better because is cheaper to source for second hand parts. 4B on the other hand is quite expensive

4g63t is better , just hone your block bores to 86.5mm and put a 4g64 crank in it.
Then you've got a 2.3L that will give more torque down low than a variable valve timed , twin scroll turboed 4b11t .
This is like when the touch screen phone came in. Some people were sceptical because it was new and unknown, but it eventually proved to me better. Saying that to say the 4B11 is newer and will eventually be best, well as long as people modify it.
