As always, thanks for your encouragement. Been a rough week, RACOONS eating the leaves from some of my cucumbers and squash plus the new sprouts, groundhog dug a hole next to my septic tank, tornado left us without power over 80 hrs. And the surge messed up my septic pump, plus we got power in time for the county septic inspection. Argh... I replanted today and netted everything. To put it in perspective, 1/2 acre of wall to wall plants. Over 100 peppers, 100 tomatoes, 12 okra, 1 single egg plant, 4 zucchini, 4 butternut squash, an herb garden of pereneals, dill, 4 cantaloupe, 6 watermelons, 100 garlic, 100 onions, 5 potato beds, 5 sweet potato beds, approx 100 bean plants, flowers, a few kale plants, 50 to 60 corn, Asian cabbage, brocolli, cabbage, fennel, anise, cilantro, basil, borage, a 4x20 strawberry bed, lettuce, carrots and more. I'm surviving stage 4 cancer and still going strong. Septic guy will be here Friday. Oh, and 3 greenstalks! Dehydrating will be a chore! Lol
Thats a legit rough week for sure! And cheers to you staying and going strong. Ill hope the best. Please subscribe if you have a chance (Thanks!) Your luck (or lack thereof) sounds like mine! Good for you, never give up!! More land would be a dream for me. I have a tiny yard, last few gardens have been in containers. Still fun and happy. Hope that cancer disappears and never returns. I'm sure your garden gives you joy!
Ground hogs are the WORST! I trapped 5 in my yard and moved them far far away. But they caused me to give up gardening at my home in MD. They completely leveled my garden plants. Best wishes for a better few weeks ahead of you.
@@sharonwright66 Oh no! Sorry to hear that! A groundhog ate my prize purple cauliflower years ago. I won't give up though. I'll try to find ways to deter it. I hope you start gardening again.
I bought all my seeds, grow bags, spray bottles, 3 pack oil & a few other things. My garden is doing so good. I watch your videos and learned so much. I was very happy with my purchases from your seed shop. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and having great products
Gary, everything I have learned from you is complete success. Thank you for all your knowledge! My garden has produced so much fruit and tranquility already this 2022 season. I can't thank you enough for your knowledge and that you are willing to share it with others so they too can be successful! Blessings!

Thank you Gary , My amazing Gardener TEACHER ! Without you this past year , I wouldn't have the Garden we have , The different varieties of everything as You taught me to start my own transplants, thank goodness I purchased all my heating mats & LED shop lights ( those from Walmart & even bought extra ) We were able to help others like I told you b4 that I had a plant sale & sold the plants for $2 each ,but also gave alot away each time people bought some , My granddaughters have loved helping me all season , Now I'm getting ready to up potted some more determinate Tomato plants , as for some reason , We didn't get 1 slicer Tomato, We got hundreds of Cherry tomatoes but none of my Abe Lincolns, Cherokee purple, old German etc . Gave me any tomatoes, my husband even put 2 camping canopies the ones on 4 legs for rain etc when u go camping we have , and moved them around but Still no Slicers , I did everything you stated & really babied them but NOTHING , so when We starred our sweet potatoe slips I grew myself & 2nd succession planting of Peppers - ( absolutely loved all the pepper seeds from you especially facing heaven ) we put the canopies over them so the intense sun didn't take them out , I now ordered shade cloth b4 that goes up in price even more , I bought 50% & 70% shade cloth from Amazon, I'm hoping my 2nd determinate tomatoes give us some slicers as I want to taste the GOOD OLD DAYS FLAVORS ! I started my butternut squash baby kind from Baker creek & mini cantalopes from Burpee they have taken off well. God bless you Gary , You saved us so much money as plants were selling for $7.98 for 1 plant . Now making my guide to wear I'm planting our Fall crops - Should I start all those seeds inside ? Or outside . Like spagetti squash , acorn squash etc..... Oh my I got such a wonderful harvest of Ping tong eggplants , I made lasagna, just breaded it an baked with alittle marinera , with mozzarella & basil as appetizers, added to stir fry etc... Can I freeze ping tong ? As Its still producing . God bless you Mr. Gary & your family. Mrs Josette . Montgomery County, Texas
Always appreciated. Nice on giving away the plants. The slicers might have been effected by the heat. It is strange though. And yes seed starting saves us money and that is huge, especially for having backup plants. Mary if I'm not mistaken, winter squash can be consumed even if the rind doesn't have time to harden. It just couldn't be stored. So if that hard frost comes before the squash skin is hard, go ahead and eat it.

The shade cloth is a game changer for cool weather plants/heat sensitive plants and even beneficial to the summer plants as well. I planted my cool weather plants LATE and they were struggling to survive but I got shade cloth for everything due to this heat wave we are having and the cool weather plants just came to life and I have broccoli and cauliflower forming in 100+ degree weather. The cabbage is trying to get some size and the brussel sprouts are putting on some size as well. My quash, cantaloupe and cucumbers always had some heat of day wilt before the fabric but they had zero wilt at 106 degrees with the fabric just sheltering the core of the plants. I had gotten some clearance tomatoes and peppers about a month ago and they were struggling with this heat and not growing much but in just a week of this fabric and plants have grown so much. Even my grape and berry bushes are putting out new growth since I put fabric over them. Even these plants meant for hot weather suffer some degree of heat stress once you hit high 90's and the shade fabric drops the temp 20-30 degrees with a 70% uv block fabric. I just did a temp check and the ground outside of the fabric is 113 degrees in the AM but just a foot away under the shade cloth it is 86. Some areas in my garden has a ground temp of 70 degrees right now!
I am becoming a big fan of shade cloth. I will be using it more. I am actually buying a infrared thermometer to show what you wrote off in a video. It’s been over 100 here in north Texas for a long time now. No end in sight I keep checking the weather it’s not going down. My window for planting my fall crops is open but I’m afraid for everything to die when transplanted in the heat, and for things I direct sow to not even germinate. Any tips or advice on what to do? This is my first year gardening so I’m not very knowledgeable.
It's so beautiful, your garden is beautiful! I wished i could to the same in southeast texas. But i am getting ready for winter .no more squashes or etc . Specially in 100 above temps .. beautiful garden. God bless!
So if you all dont get frosts or at least not early than Maryland., You only need like 50 days for squash. Can you get another round in of most warm crops around the heat? Just wondering. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN good question Gary, i did try last year in August and no success do to the heat, EVEN if the seed package instructions say to plant in August and last year the temperatures were and the 90. This year we reached record's highest 100 above . Sinces our first freeze if it happens 😂 is in January or February? I am going to risk it plant some squash in September and see what happens. In another words , southeast texas is very unpredictable. But steal learning ways to plant and get a harvest. I planted my green beans this year in February, my tomatoes first of March. Yup ..

Thanks for this video! I'm eating squash and zucchini from our garden while watching your video.....😋 Our first year of growing these veggies.. they are so fresh and delicious... We started another row of 4 golden zucchini plants about 4 weeks ago, and a few days ago we sew 3 more zucchini seeds for 3 plants... Successive planting while we can.. We do have some issues with squash vine borers but that doesn't discourage us, we just keep planting!! For some reason I thought you live in California but it seems you're in the same zone as I am. Hi Gary, An off topic question... I planted some 20 inch tall raised beds and put in Tomatoes and peppers. Somehow the soil sunk down so badly it is probably only 7 or 8 inches high. I want to raise the soil level at least a 4 inches. I know that won't bother the tomato plants but what about the peppers? Can I put extra soil in the beds and not loose my pepper plants? Thanks .. enjoy your videos
A question: Do Sunflowers put something in the soil that keeps other plants from growing well? Are there any special things I need to know about Sunflower placement in the garden?

I’m trying the shade cloth (40%) in our zone 6B community Garden at our church. I have done late sowings of green beans, pole beans, and summer squash. Question: do these crops need shade cloth? Also, I’ll be seeding things like beets, carrots and spinach next month for a fall crop. I’m planning to use the shade cloth on those crops.
Within last month I've planted potatoes radishes beets spinach green beans (second planting ) squash. Have been planting that in susession. Is doing pretty good. Now can I send cabbage now broccolli ?

I'm in Texas and the heat is killing my summer crops. I have a covered back porch. Do you think I can start new seeds and just raise the plants in containers on the back porch?
It is worth trying. But you also probably have time to wait and just plant in the grand as you fall should be much better and longer than ours in Maryland. Great advice. Say, why don't I see more Delicata squash being planted? It is a wonderful tender-skinned winter type squash that has marvelous flavor. I have my kale still plugging along. Just have to keep a constant vigil for the aphids. Zone 9a, South SCCO CA

Can I ask what is that brown color on your strawberries leaves and how would you treat that? I had one like that and thought it would be verticillium wilt so I threw the plant away I am a new gardener though.

Hi Gary ... love the channel. I am close by in zone 6b/7 on the PA/DE/MD border so your info is really helpful and relevant. I have a question for you (provided you can reply). My tomato bed got hit with a black spot fungal blight during the heavy rains 3 or so weeks ago, that I treated and pruned down. My question is ... I had to prune fairly aggressively and now there are large clusters of fruit with no adjacent sun leaves. Any thoughts on whether they will ripen? Is there anything I can do to help strengthen the plant a bit - is aspirin not appropriate with a compromised plant? I appreciate your advice!
I compost everything that’s compostable bones weeds old plants chicken coop compost egg shell carboard papers grassclipping tea bags remove staples coffee grines etc fill bucket with rain water and in min of wk start mix 10/1 feed ur plants wkly I also dry my banana peel grined them and make liquid feed to add wk and I mix Epson salt and water feed for cal mag and I also use urine 10/1 some people that that’s terrible but it’s free food
The flowers will dry and brown. For more information of tomato catfacing and vegetable gardening, visit my blog, The Rusted Garden Journal at therustedgarden.blogspot.com/2023/07/the-potential-cause-and-treament-for.html
My kale looks horrid from pests. I wonder if I could prune it before the cooler weather and see healthy regrowth. I’m glad you posted this video as I’m planning to reseed in some open spots I now have in this painful heat! In Japan 🇯🇵

@@THERUSTEDGARDENa year after, but same question. My kale and lettuce caught the heat. I saw them at the store and thought what the heck. Then lots of days in 90 plus heat. Bitter and gross. But I can’t bring myself to rip um out the ground. Cut um back and hope for better taste it start over?
Any tips for a fall garden when you don't plan on ripping out summer plants until the first frost? All the plants have been so healthy this year. Probably because it's been unusually dry and not as humid as other years.

I noticed that you have planted sunflowers beside your vegetables. I read somewhere that sunflower plants can inhibit the growth of other plants. Did you observe this happening in your garden? Thanks!

I was wondering when it is in the high 90's to 100 consistently over weeks (Arkansas) and the plants are in survival mode, should you refrain from fertilizing? It seems there couldn't be a lot of nutrients left in the soil (grow bags) at this point after watering so much, but I've read not to fertilize.
Yeah you could probably wait on the water soluble as if there is no vegetative growth, you don't need as much. Or probably better, cut the dosing down by 1/2. Watering is key. I mince my basil and tuck it into ice cube trays. I then fill with water or better olive oil and freeze. Once frozen, I put it in zip locs. When cooking I just toss the cube in whatever I'm making.😁
It wont freeze well but for pesto and sauces. That is what I do with it. I dont mind 'wasting it' as it would not have existed without me. So after I give as much away as I can, and use etc... This is the first year I have grown scalloped squash and am wondering if I've done something wrong. I direct seeded it in early June when I did all of my summer squash. The scalloped squash is growing very heartily but I have yet to have a female squash appear yet. All of my other squash and zucchini is producing great just not the scalloped. I don't know what is going on.

Thank you Gary , My amazing Gardener TEACHER !
Without you this past year , I wouldn't have the Garden we have ,
The different varieties of everything as You taught me to start my own transplants, thank goodness I purchased all my heating mats & LED shop lights ( those from Walmart & even bought extra )
We were able to help others like I told you b4 that I had a plant sale & sold the plants for $2 each ,but also gave alot away each time people bought some ,
My granddaughters have loved helping me all season ,
Now I'm getting ready to up potted some more determinate Tomato plants , as for some reason , We didn't get 1 slicer Tomato, We got hundreds of Cherry tomatoes but none of my Abe Lincolns, Cherokee purple, old German etc .
Gave me any tomatoes, my husband even put 2 camping canopies the ones on 4 legs for rain etc when u go camping we have , and moved them around but Still no Slicers , I did everything you stated & really babied them but NOTHING ,
so when We starred our sweet potatoe slips I grew myself & 2nd succession planting of Peppers - ( absolutely loved all the pepper seeds from you especially facing heaven ) we put the canopies over them so the intense sun didn't take them out , I now ordered shade cloth b4 that goes up in price even more , I bought 50% & 70% shade cloth from Amazon,
I'm hoping my 2nd determinate tomatoes give us some slicers as I want to taste the GOOD OLD DAYS FLAVORS !
I started my butternut squash baby kind from Baker creek & mini cantalopes from Burpee they have taken off well.
God bless you Gary , You saved us so much money as plants were selling for $7.98 for 1 plant .
Now making my guide to wear I'm planting our Fall crops -
Should I start all those seeds inside ? Or outside .
Like spagetti squash , acorn squash etc.....
Oh my I got such a wonderful harvest of Ping tong eggplants ,
I made lasagna, just breaded it an baked with alittle marinera , with mozzarella & basil as appetizers, added to stir fry etc...

I’ll try and drop more seeds today. Thanks Gary!
Rutabaga are really good mashed with carrots!
Thats what I do with the turnips and they grow better here. Next year Ill try earlier Rutabagas.

Will the strawberries winter over in a greenstalk ? I’m in Zone 4b/5a .
The Slugs ate every leaf off my potatoes this year. I had to pull them early but threw about 15 back in the soil hoping for a fall crop. I didn't chit them like normal. Do you think they will come up?

I have never heard that. I dont see it happening in the garden here but I dont know 100%

Can I still plant ? Thank you for all your knowledge.. I k ow my audience is more interested in makeup then my garden but I really enjoy growing my own food 🥕🥦🥬
The are really frost tolerant. So yes but I would try and get a faster producing variety if you are going from seed. You can also eat the leaves.

Yep you can start them. Take notes so you can looking at planting dates for next year and adjust.

Hi Loved your garden and your video.
I live in Longisland NY. Is it too late for me to plant sweet potatoes?
My sugar snaps are growing like crazy and I'm getting a couple handfuls a day. So I took out some salad greens and put in another patch of sugar snap peas. Zone 4 garden here with possible first frost mid-Sept. But I figured it can't hurt to try.
Nice on trying and getting production

What about carrots Gary, can I start my second crop now? I am still harvesting my first crop am in New Jersey zone 7😊

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN At what temp is it to hot for seeds to germinate? I am in Texas too, and some of things I tries starting from seed, like corn and beans just don't germinate. The heat is just killing everything!
I’m in Texas and nothing is producing! I had beautiful floweredeverything 3 weeks ago but all blooms cooked! I’m sick! Worked soooooo hard! No way am I putting anymore seeds right now. They’ll burn up at first sight!
Your sunflowers are so nice! Do you plant the for a specific reason? Or just because they are nice to look at?
Just for look an Nature. They do make shade during July which is a bonus for plants.

Gary, I have had a hard time with growing dill from seed. It seems very finicky, and the leaves dry out in direct sun. Any suggestions?

Great advice. Say, why don't I see more Delicata squash being planted? It is a wonderful tender-skinned winter type squash that has marvelous flavor. I have my kale still plugging along. Just have to keep a constant vigil for the aphids. Zone 9a, South SCCO CA
I have grown Delicata. I think the though is green zuke, yellow squash. It fell off my radar when I ran out of seeds.

Can I ask what is that brown color on your strawberries leaves and how would you treat that? I had one like that and thought it would be verticillium wilt so I threw the plant away I am a new gardener though.
I just happens here. I dont spray them. I let it happen. It comes then goes. An anti fungal might help but I dont like washing the strawberries.

Hi Gary ... love the channel.
I have carrots in flower now. How do i know when the seeds are ready? Should I plant them this fall? Zone 6
The flowers will dry and brown.

My kale looks horrid from pests. I wonder if I could prune it before the cooler weather and see healthy regrowth. I’m glad you posted this video as I’m planning to reseed in some open spots I now have in this painful heat! In Japan 🇯🇵
Yeah a have a video on it. You can strip all the leaves. Dust the stem or whatever and a big drink of water soluble fertilizer. They new leaves should come back.

Depends on how much production you need. If they are so strong maybe you dont need more. But you can always drop seed and keep what looks best.

I noticed that you have planted sunflowers beside your vegetables. I read somewhere that sunflower plants can inhibit the growth of other plants. Did you observe this happening in your garden? Thanks!
I found it to be partially true. Fresh growing sunflowers next to a plant can impact it. But it was on the rare occasion it seemed.

I’m in western MA. Been dry up here. How do you keep up with watering? Or are you? I too have deep mulch beds, but the top 6-8inches are bone dry
So we really do get a lot of rain but I will water by hand when needed. I use it as a time to weed, inspect and tie up plants. Keeping that top 6 inches is key for a thriving garden.

Squash beetles are kicking my tail! If I replant will they still get attacked? I have an old parachute. Will it work like shade cloth?
Shade cloth is always letting sun in. Parachute my block a of light form getting through but it would work on super hot days. Squash bugs will come back but usually less later in the season.

Gary. I always plant a lot of basil but I hate wasting it . What do you do with all if yours? It doesn't dry or freeze well
Roots and Refuge did a recent video on making teas all summer with the many varieties of basil.
Make pesto, or puree it in olive oil. Both freeze well.
Then Nature uses it.

You can put some cuttings into some water when they are getting close to flowering. It won't last forever, but it will buy you a little extra time to figure out what to do with it. That's what I've been doing lately.
Don’t fall in love with drops at the end of their season. I had a great crop of tango lettuce but it bolted and was bitter. I pulled out all of it.
Got it.

Sometimes it just happens and you have to wait for Nature

Question, I have a SW 100 tomato that i grew from seed, and from the stem of the fruit clusters at the end of what the end of the cluster is supposed to be, another branch forms with its own flowers and leaves and suckers and all! Is this normal?
Yes, but it i agree, it's weird 🙂
I dont think it is normal. I have seen it but rarely. If it is suppose to do that, all the stems will have it. Weird for sure.

Gary I have 5 rows (25’) of corn about ready to harvest. Can I sow corn seed between rows now? I’m running out of room but I’m pulling some crops and sowing m second wave of summer crops. Zone 7B- 100*+ for another month.
Hmmm. I never did that but its worth experimenting. Just cut the other mature stalks and dont yank out the old roots as to disturb the new roots.
