  • A spearfishing take on the classic surf and turf! This video features a catch and cook starring the illustrious goatfish (aka Red Mullet).
After a day of mixed fortunes diving grounds near Jervis Bay, I salvaged what looked like a bad day with a nice bag of target species.
With beautiful early spring weather on the NSW South Coast, I head out to do a cook-up on the beach; surf and turf! Featuring a reverse butterfly goat fish cooked over the coals, followed by a ribeye on the bone for a main course while the sunset rolls in. Life just doesn't get much better!

Great vid, but i would recommend you google cooking with driftwood, supposed to be quite toxic apparently

@@lunamanu7 Thank you very much for the comment. I appreciate the positive feedback and concern. Yes, you are correct (and maybe i should have put a disclaimer up). Among other things, driftwood from oceans soaks up sodium chloride / salt and when burnt can be toxic, the main issue is dioxins which can bioaccumulate. Whilst i am aware of this risk, I still used some drift wood in this instance (not all the wood was drift wood), with the following considerations
      - As always, i try to stay out of the smoke, this is good practice regardless of the fuel source.
      - I do NOT do this regularly, so I personally accept the risk of minimal exposure infrequently, regular exposure would create a very high risk of bioaccumulation (dioxin has a half life of like 7-11 years I believe). However, everyone should consider their own risk profiles
      - i burn the fire down well and truly before using the coals to cook.
      - keep in mind that the smoke from any fire will be harmful, it is just that drift wood is worse than most (not all) other woods.
You are spot on, there is a risk, and anyone thinking about such a practice should be informed before undertaking an activity like this.
      Thank you!
