Pepper Rodgers actually had a nice little run as UCLA head coach, but couldn't beat SC. He famously upset #1 Nebraska during his tenure and his offenses gained a lot of high powered yards behind a massive offensive line. The problem with his wishbone offense was SC's defense was just too fast, physical and filled with tons of future NFL athletes for such a one dimensional attack. John McKay famously drew up how to defend the wishbone on a cocktail napkin for reporters the night before the game and basically executed the plan to perfection. Teams followed suit and it became the model on how to defend it. His fast outside linebackers would crash down on the snap of the ball and smack the the runner every play.
