- In this three-part exclusive series, ABC Big 2's (KMID) Cameron Stuart takes an in-depth look at the story of Odessa Permian's last football state championship through the eyes of the players.
Permian was coming off the backlash of the Friday Night Lights book and sanctions that banned them from the playoffs in 1990. In 1991, the Panthers went 16-0 and defeated Priest Holmes and San Antonio Marshall in the State Championship game.
This was a very good team effort by all. I knew many of the players few years younger than me , you could definitely feel the presence of greatness.
They should have made the series about them. The series is one of the best shows to ever be on TV.
We were co-state champions in 84. French high School. We never knew that they claimed the championship while our banner said co-state champion. Wtf
sounds like your banner wording is wrong. Ours doesn't lie. We were state champions in 84. Not our fault you guys word it differently. Be proud! Furthermore looking into any champion high school or college no one puts co-anything. Colorado didn't, Georgia Tech Didn't.
I remember watching these teams as a kid. Crazy these west Texas teams are a complete non factor in the Texas HS playoffs anymore.
They banned the chop block or cut block. They were Jedi Maters at that BS. After that, the program went down hill. Had to play smash mouth helmet to helmet afterwards and it didn’t work out for them.
It is because the demographics have changed.
@@JohnB-ct3ul Lol, bull. Anybody can do that. The demographics changed.
@@bravo23delta90 It is true. I'm from Odessa. Once the chop block went away, Permian did too. Zone Blocking scheme, Same with the NFL, college etc. Why do you think the RB position is of so low value currently?
They finished that year pretty close to the top of the national rankings. Number 3 I believe
They should have finished #1 or a share of it.
RIP to the knees they blew out using that chop block technique that eventually was banned. 😂😂
It hurts that this school hasn’t built a dynasty after the legendary book and film
The dynasty was before. The book was the climax. 30 year run is pretty good.
Yeah, this was the dynasty. It's one of the most legendary runs in HS football.
I was supposed to be on that team.
I moved😒😮💨
Won State somewhere else.
Rather have the Chip with MOJO
What is the boy camp they refer to in off-season . somebody explain please
Boy's State is a summer program for kids around each state to go to a college campus and learn the in's and out's of government
Thank you.
Did they ever play Carter again after ‘88?
Yes they did, beat them 14-13 in Odessa in 1995. Permian lost in the state championship that year.
So off season conditioning was not allowed? Or was it because the coaches were supervising it?
Wait.. I thought the Lewisville fight famers where the first team to win a 5A division II state championship in 1993
You’re correct…. Temple and Judson won it the year before in 5A.
How were you undefeated in 81 but no championship?
I played pop warner in odessa from 1980 83 tailback for the noel saints parents got calls from coach gaines asking if i was going to permian or O.H.S lol moved to California went to college ran a 4.4 40 why gaines wanted me
I didn't read the book. I didn't see the movie as bad press. It had different angles of football but there are communities all over that put a lot of focus on football or another sport. Did this talented team all grow up in Odessa or did OP get some transfers (due to the publicity)?
I read the book. It was a mid-30’s New York Jewish man pointing out every perceived negative he could find while spending time with hospitable Texas high school students.
Single digits, difference that’s nothing. the defense I played in we held eight games to zero points. I’m not impressed.
Played High School ball in Central Texas in the 90’s. We heard about Permian but never respected their program. Mainly because they treated their minority players like sht and only a few players became D1 phenoms. Another reason is without the chop block, that book is never written.
After losing to our team, we witnessed a coach tell black players “You n- hurry up and get on the bus!”
Totally lost respect for that program after witnessing that. I take nothing away from the players only the BS behind the scenes. Going undefeated and winning a State championship in Texas is almost impossible.
Didn't Desoto go 16-0 last year? Also, didn't Kyler Murray and Allen win three state titles? Northshore?
@@marcvslicinivscrassvs7536 DeSoto’s Coach was a beast back in his days. Two state rings playing RB.
@@JohnB-ct3ul That is insane
