I have been using this ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU as a handy reference book. I read through the book and enjoyed the little glimpses of examples. I love that this author believes in rescue dogs. The tips and training has been invaluable and gave me moments of...."how simple why didn't I think of it" so it's been a great tool. Thank you!
I appreciate the way you speak slowly, very clearly and calmly. This would be a perfect video for learners of English as a Foreign Language, as well as for those interested in training their dogs. There is an overload of information online, and your videos are refreshing in their clarity and spoonfed, small-doses of content.
I have a GSD/Timber Wolf hybrid that I rescued who did the same thing. Pulled me around at three months old (72 lbs) now almost 85 lbs and eight months. I spent a ton of time making rules and making sure he didnt break them of get away with not doing what he was told. It took me ten weeks to teach a solid sit since wolves don't "sit" and he is 50/50. but he knows over 30 tricks and 22 commands. you can do it, just be patient and dont give up and stay positive towards your dog. :)
Watching this video is a breath of fresh air. Zak George is very engaging but he tends to repeat the same basic principles in every video. This video however is slower, calmer, and contains in my opinion more practical techniques to achieve a behavioural goal. Keep up the good work!
The more the dog pulls the more opportunity to teach them. Very encouraging. I am recommending your videos to some children I know who want to train their dogs. It's tough to explain the concepts to kids and you have done an excellent job.
I always did stop when Jax would pull, and then praise when he would walk without tension, but I never knew to turn in the other direction. Will definitely give this a try!
I have a swiss sheperd and having looked at a lot of dog training vids on youtube, I think these are the best! Simple, straightforward and full of love for dogs.
Hopefully this helps someone who's struggling with their dog pulling. What i do is that i make someone walk with me when i take the dog out and make them walk off ahead in front. My dog will pull and pull so he can catch up to the person ahead but i don't move. I sit him down and then walk again, as soon as he pulls the lead, i stop. Eventually the dog should realise that the only way they'll get to the person or thing they want is by walking by your side. (Requires crazy patience)
I've been doing that for a couple months now! My dog has finally started to understand, but she's not improving anymore. Now I'm trying to find other tactics to do also
I just got a German Shepherd/Bloodhound mix. He got the intelligence of a GSD, and the stubbornness of a Bloodhound. You're videos have helped me so much!
You are a dog whisperer. Your gentle command of a dog is amazing and I will apply your principles to my very uncontained 3 year old Belgian Malinois. Your videos are well done and you know how to simplify training.
Two weeks ago I rescued a dog who is about 2-3 years old. He's a Westie/Jack Russel mix. The first time I walked him around the block he dragged me no matter what I tried. Although he improved throughout the last couple of weeks, it was still an issue. I tried your approach yesterday and I just made the clicking noise with my mouth. In just ten minutes I had a HUGE improvement! Thank you so much for your kind approach to dog training. I will watch all your videos. BIG HUGS TO YOU!!!
This works great! I spent an hour this afternoon doing these exercises with my GSD/Malinois mix, and she was an absolute angel on the walk this evening! Thanks!
I've used this technique with my dog she is almost understanding what I want. Rewatching these videos makes me realize I'm teaching it wrong. As soon as the leash is tight, I stop and turn a different direction. While walking the opposite direction, she heels almost perfectly, knowing that is the behavior I want and will make me turn around. Then she'll run ahead again. She is almost there! Now, I'll teach the "side" command from your other video and that should work. Thanks for the great vids!
I think.. you could specify certain "walks" where you work on this (loose leash walking) for like 15 minutes straight at least. Then, perhaps you could go on other walks too. IDK though.
the relaxed energy you share while training your dog is a great! Thanks for sharing. my dog is relatively well trained but afraid of loud noises & is even afraid of the sound of the clicker!
I volunteer in a local shelter. I like your advice. But the dog in the video is actually quite attentive. When you have a dog that you don't have a connection with, that has loads of energy and is not interested in food or toys it's different. When you add lounging besides pulling and icy floors it's a whole other deal. I like positive training I just wish you would demonstrate your approach on another dog. Besides I have a feeling that positive training works best in an environment that you can control. Is that realistic? In my area there is traffic, kids, loose dogs, cats, birds as soon as I walk out the door. I do not control my environment. From indoor practice to real life - big leap in my case. You can of course drive to another area, but for puppies that need to go out every two hours, it just doesn't make sense.
There is some really excellent advice and tips on this video, and I'm so glad you've used a larger dog here. It's easy to click a small dog before it surges ahead, but when you have a GSD or an ESS, two steps and they are already close to pulling. I like the way you stop and change directions. And your dog is an absolutely beautiful, one of the prettiest GSDs I've seen in a long time.
My dog doesn't care about treats when we're on a walk and my husband has been walking her and letting her pull. I had her to the point where she was walking perfectly with me and now she pulls every time we go out. It's so damn stressful that I had progress and now we're backtracking because he won't spend the effort to keep her on the right track. He just walks and lets her do whatever she wants. What can I do now?
***** Yeah we don't make her walk right beside us constantly, as we go to the park where she can roam whenever, but the sidewalks are very slim here and there's always people walking their dogs and cars going by constantly, so him not keeping her nearby usually enables her to run out into the road whenever she feels like it. I keep her leash relaxed until she tries to be silly or bolt off. She's doing well with me alone. He's very irresponsible with walking her and no longer comes with us. (He also doesn't seem to comprehend the dangers of many things that can happen with dogs and constantly argues that his lab - his only dog did this or that with no problems. He has no idea what dog ownership entails and no longer has a say in anything that involves my pup).
This is how I teached my 9 year old dog to walk beside me. I turned a gazillion times at first walk, but already on the second walk it got better. Long process that really payed off at last!! excellent!! Thanks a lot.
This video does a good job demonstrating some basics for a pet dog. It demonstrates nothing for a working dog. Chances are non of have or will own a true working dog. So great video . If you have a working dog and your looking for advice on UA-cam? We'll be sure you give that dog to someone who knows what that dog is and how to handle it
This is an awesome video! My dog picked it up in one day. He's a heeler mix and is really responsive to any positive training though. Thank you so very much for posting this. I was so done with the pulling! Now on to figuring out how to make him stop barking at people we pass and trying to chase after cars. Mainly, stop barking at people we pass! :). Thank you so much!
I will try it! I have a very exuberant foster dog (strong Bernese Mt. Dog!) who is horrible on a leash. My problem is that I was walking him at the same time my husband had our older, trained, dog. Too much stimulation. I'll do this in the back yard first. Thanks for the ideas. It always amazes me how little I know and I've had so many dogs throughout the years! The fact that the other ones got trained is a miracle!
this video is good, but it only addresses part of the problem. what if your dog flops on a leash, and all its obedience goes out the window as soon as it has a leash on? i'm pretty sure if you showed the video with an untrained dog it would be more helpful, because it addresses the problem more realistically, whereas in this video, the dog is obviously already trained, which takes the purpose out of it. still, i like your style of training.
+tunis mcguigan my dog isn't professionally trained. This dog is only clicker trained. You can do that easily, just click and give a treat. You need to build association that click means treat, then that click means correct. It's not cheating at all. My 5 month old pup learned that click = treat/correct in a few sessions yesterday and I've aready had success with this method less than 24 hours later.
Your videos are the best. Your teaching is very clear and concise, and you organize it in a fantastic way. GREAT job in both content and delivery. Thank you very much.
Thanks so much for posting these training tutorials! My 5-month old puppie was pulling hard on a regular leash and even on a gentle leader. When I started working with her using your approach, I expected to spend weeks gradually building up her skills. But she caught on right away and within 4 days I could walk her around the block without any struggles. Amazing! Great stuff!
Thanks man for the advice, I'm 13 years old and I the one who nearly takes care of our German sheperd in this family, I enjoy spending time with him and I have watched all your videos and he is well trained I like to take him to the park without a leash because follows me and doesn't get distracted and he is only 7 months old he is s really good dog and thank you again for the training
People it really isn't that serious with his face being that close. Yall just read through the comments and noticed it and started jumping on that childish bandwagon. Be cool in the comment section please. No need to be rude. "Just say please can you not be that close to the camera and thank you!" If its really that big of deal.
"Just say please can you not be that close to the camera and thank you!" If its really that big of deal" Or,or just click the fuck out of here! Crap, I just replied to a bunch of these comments. I also just realized that the comments I replied to are a millions years old.
Have a 6 month old female GS spayed a month ago and she's learning but when people approach her she jumps and goes bonkers🙄, hopefully these lessons work🤔
This is very helpful. I have a rescue dog, and walking her is an ordeal. She has no impulse control at all. I'm working with the ideas in your videos and it's helping. When we're on a walk, I have to use little bits of hot dog, because she's way too distracted to bother with a little piece of kibble. Thanks for the videos!
Potty training Max was our biggest problem; then my husband used the video trainings from *ThePuppyGru. com* and within 3 days little Max was almost potty trained! #amazing
you"re the best dog trainer i've ever seen ^-^ This helped so much on my 9 week old puppy, He almost mastered everything you have shown on videos, Takes a lot of time and patience tough! But ever since he understood the basics of the click system, he started to focus more on learning things!
Hi Tab, another fab video from you. It's always wonderful to see another reward based trainer like myself showing the way things can work without having to hurt or intimidate your dog in the process :-)
I would love to see some new videos from you. Both my dogs and myself have learned a LOT from you. You are a good trainer, you explain things well and break them into small steps.
Ricardo Pacheco Dont know wtf your problem is he has a valid point, these videos are great and informative but he is FAR too close to the camera, it's almost like he is in your face and invading your personal space, I find the videos very uncomfortable to watch sometimes if Im honest. The only jackass here my friend is you.
Thanks for the video! The wife and I have a 2 year old and we have been having quite a struggle working with him on following/walking/pulling. This is a very instructional and practical video for us to follow. I've only been implementing this video for the past 2-3 days and have already been seeing some minor results. a little will really go a long way, so I look forward to seeing more progress with our pup! Thanks again!!!
I have a very distracted hyper Aussie and is not treat motivated but she loves the clicker. I’ve watched so many videos and this is the one that helped the most. Thank you!!! :)
I am a Really Big Fan of you and your methods. I enjoy watching these old ones as well as those up to now 2023, My training is slow but sure. Good for you, and all other Positive Trainers!!!
I absolutely love your videos. I've used them on my adult dog I got from a rescue and I will also be using them on my new Great Dane puppy I will be getting Thursday. I've also forwarded your videos to my friends. Thank you for posting.
Thank you for providing the public with these valuable expert training technics. I have a 2.5 year old, Doberman Pinscher (neutered male), he's extremely smart, curious, and energetic. He tends to become overly excited and pulls on our walks. I will instate your technics and let you know how they work.
Thank you so much for your videos. I have a 9 month old husky mix, and pulling on walks was an issue. I was using a halti no-pull harness, but my dog eventually got used to it, and it became ineffective. I am now using a head leader, but I don't want her to get used to that, too I would never use a choke chain on her, so I decided to try your method, and am happy to report that since I have been using the re-direction method, my dog, who is bred to pull, has really improved. Thanks again!
I am a new animal dog training; i felt the infrormation you provided in your video will help me succeed as a trainer; I'm also a owner of a minature pintcher and a pomeranian as well; both does have been handle and aboused by previous owner; So I have to descentize them; both pull a lot on the chain before and during walk as well as barking. Thank for a safe way to teach him the how not to pull. i love you method
Great video! I love how you ended it on a good note - mistakes are good! They lead to learning. One thing I noticed is that if you fed the reward only on your left side the dog wouldn't get in front of you as much anticipating the treat. Thanks for the great video!
These are excellent training videos. I've been working with dogs, and horses, for many years, and have learned some helpful new principles and tactics. Thanks!
This is very good information. I appreciate the fact that you are teaching an older dog without tension. I recently adopted a beautiful GSD. She's 2.5 and my only issue is walking her. She's usually so excited about being outside so its been a challenge getting her to focus. She either runs or sits. Ill try your method and provide feedback.
I've only watched 3 of your videos so far and I've learned so many key important things already. Thank you very much, I have two doberman pups that need a lot of training to do, especially potty and house training and I'm confident that with these videos it'll be much easier and quicer to do so.
I have had the same problem with my pits in the past, I've tried a few methods of my own concoction on them to little avail. This one is working on my 2 year old pit/boxer mix (he is a power-house), he used to pull like a train, but with consistency(starting in your yard or house as Tab289 recommends) and rewards it will work. It's taking a lot of effort on my part with Winston, but I am seeing results. "You will receive the behavior you tolerate" So true with humans and animals.
Love your training dogs video, very detail and clear! Love it love it, I am going to us your techniques to try to train my boyfriend's 3 year old greater Swiss mountain dog, who does not response to stay and come command! Thank you very much of posting all these lovely videos! Love them a lot!!! Thanks!
I love your videos and your ability to flow praise for good behavior. Sometimes a good behavior should to be praised even if it isn't exactly what you were asking for. Your style helped me learn to use the clicker in a manner that fits my general training style as a person. Thanks for making them.
Thanks for sharing this video! My dog constantly pulls when he's on the leash. We've gone from collar to gentle lead but he gets so worked up that he's actually hurt his face with the gentle lead. Now we're onto a harness (he's a mix, looks like an English Pointer), which is somewhat helping. I'm going to try applying these techniques into my routine with him. By the way, I love your German Shepherd! Beautiful dog! Thanks again!
A very clear, concise lesson. I'll try it with my huskies over the week-end and see if I can have any luck. Thankfully I'm too heavy for them to be able to really pull, but it does start to wear on my hands and the joints in my arms after a while, as they're very strong dogs.
I'm glad that you said when the dog pulls, to stop and change directions. I also thought when my dogs pulls, I should just stop...and then keep walking (in the same direction) when she comes closer to me making slack in the leash. The problem with this is...when she pulls and I stop...she doesn't come to me so we can continue the walk. She just stands as far from me as she can. I would wait and wait and wait for her to come close so I could continue walking..but she wouldn't.
I've been working with my pup, Bailee is her name, for about a few days-a week, she did So great today!! she's getting the hang out it! I work with her a few times a day. I'm just hoping working with her everyday will make her into the wonderful dog I know she can be!!
Lol I don't mind the face being close, so far he is one of the best trainers of dogs I've come across fair play to him! He is great at that he does this will really help me train my Labrador puppy :) thank you!
Very good man, you have now a new subscriber. I have actually been training my schnauzer myself, which is the best thing. I think that positive reinforcement along with discipline is the key to have a good canine citizen. Exercise, discipline and affection. CONGRATS KEEP WORKING
I have used gentle leader, didn't worked, I went to a trainer but it only works while in class. My dog is 1y 6m and... My hands suffer a lot and surely my dogs neck too. I almost buy the choke chain then I bumped into your video. you have made me not to loose hope, I'll be even more patient and try this
What a great video. You are an exceptional trainer. The more people train their dogs the easier it is for us dog walkers to do our jobs. Keep up the good work. Jason at SurfdogLA
@tab289 THANK U FOR THE TIPS!! I have a 4 year old female pitbull, who is my baby, and I used to be discouraged that I couldn't take her walking with my sister's other dogs because she used to pull too much. I used the "loose leash" technique and fed her treats as well and over a two week period she has become sooo well behaved and so wonderful to walk with!!! She is much happier now that I am able to take her walking everyday. Thanx again u genius!
i love your videos this is my progress - 2 days ive taught/improved my dog how to sit/lay/paw/roll over/stand on a objeect/stay/ and working on the pulling issues
I have a dog just like yours (GSD/malinois mix) completely unsocialized at the same age. In my case, positive training would not work if he did not receive his punishment first, so we ended up using a prong collar after many failed attempts. Now he's completely calm and focused. I highly encourage you to keep using a prong collar, just make sure you're using it properly, that the size and link size are appropriate, and that you just give short yet strong pulls whenever he tries to walk past you.

You are a natural teacher, communicator and dog handler. I am a police dog handler in the UK and am learning a lot from your videos. Thank you
Your videos are very helpful. Thank you for posting. I would think the end result is better relastionship with the master and their dog.

Great video great channel. Thanks for all of these videos. Has taught me a great deal as a new dog owner.
I love this guy! Everything he teaches he does with gentleness and understanding and respect for his dog.
nice video bro i should try it to my dog too.

Very informative video. I am going to give this a try. Sadly, I was turning into the dog screamer.
I did this with my German Shepherd puppy, Odin, and he is doing great! Walking with him is so nice. Thanks for the video! Your GS is so beautiful.
My question is, does this mean that you don't take your dog for a "normal" continuous walk until he's mastered loose leash?
That's exactly what I was wondering! How is my dog supposed to get exercise?
I think.. you could specify certain "walks" where you work on this (loose leash walking) for like 15 minutes straight at least. Then, perhaps you could go on other walks too. IDK though.

I agree.. Train him as told....Keep the dog and get a new husband.
Give your husband a treat for everytime he keeps the dog on the leash. Problem solved

'It's hard to put a leash on a dog once you've put a crown on it's head.'
Why does every one keep saying that.. we have all heard that quote -.-
Mine too,it's just an apparantly overused quote I heard from GAME OF THRONES.Not meant to insult anyone's dog.
You are really gifted in understanding the dog's behavior. And patient!!!
Your dog is low energy so this works great, Can you demonstrate with a high energy dog please?
roadrash 83 you're an idiot and your so called method doesn't work on all hyperactive dogs 🤦
roadrash 83 exercising your dog before you train them will most likely get them tired. They'll be too tired to train
I have a high energy dog and this works great on him.

Hahaha

Who cares where his face is, He is showing us how to train our dogs if you don't like it Go pay big money to a dog trainer and He's good at it.
"Just say please can you not be that close to the camera and thank you!" If its really that big of deal"
Or,or just click the fuck out of here!
Crap, I just replied to a bunch of these comments. I also just realized that the comments I replied to are a millions years old.
this is so helpful!!! seems simple but really tricky... thanks great videos**
I have a german shephard too !!!! Shes a girl , shes 5 y srs old and her name is Raine 😄
Aww cute
Aww I might be getting one I dunno yet so I wanna start to learn how to train him
Simply Me I have one and her name is Sapphira
Soo she must be about 7 right now
Have a 6 month old female GS spayed a month ago and she's learning but when people approach her she jumps and goes bonkers🙄, hopefully these lessons work🤔
This is very helpful. I have a rescue dog, and walking her is an ordeal. She has no impulse control at all. I'm working with the ideas in your videos and it's helping. When we're on a walk, I have to use little bits of hot dog, because she's way too distracted to bother with a little piece of kibble. Thanks for the videos!
can you please back away from the camera like 10 feet.
Potty training Max was our biggest problem; then my husband used the video trainings from *ThePuppyGru. com* and within 3 days little Max was almost potty trained! #amazing
#whogivesafuck
This. Good advice but he's all up in my grill. It's awkward.
Dennis Boyd those of us with difficulty hearing appreciate being able to easily see his face for lip reading.
milkweedsage good for you
you"re the best dog trainer i've ever seen ^-^
This helped so much on my 9 week old puppy,
He almost mastered everything you have shown on videos,
Takes a lot of time and patience tough! But ever since he understood
the basics of the click system, he started to focus more on learning things!
You are way to close to the camera dude.
Hi Tab, another fab video from you. It's always wonderful to see another reward based trainer like myself showing the way things can work without having to hurt or intimidate your dog in the process :-)
Would be wise to mention that you will have zero chance of achieving this if you use an extendable leash...
This is fantastic. You did a great job. Your timing is absolutely perfect. Look at how relaxed the dog is. Wonderful job!!!
He's on drugs Js
I would love to see some new videos from you. Both my dogs and myself have learned a LOT from you. You are a good trainer, you explain things well and break them into small steps.
please take a few steps away from the camera
Please take a step away from this UA-cam channel jack ass
Ricardo Pacheco Dont know wtf your problem is he has a valid point, these videos are great and informative but he is FAR too close to the camera, it's almost like he is in your face and invading your personal space, I find the videos very uncomfortable to watch sometimes if Im honest. The only jackass here my friend is you.
Kyle Fletcher Well m9 its actually pretty disrespectful my friend the jackass so yea m8
Predictive text, it's the future.
Thanks again!!!
im scared.
I have a very distracted hyper Aussie and is not treat motivated but she loves the clicker. I’ve watched so many videos and this is the one that helped the most. Thank you!!! :)
Don't mean to be rude but I stopped watching this video because of your face. It's too close to the camera and its distracting.. me
u are stupid
+Oliver Sorisho I will surely top watching if your face is up there
Well done. Straightforward advice. Will try it with my 13-week-old Shiloh Shepherd.
I’ve watched several similar videos, and this one looks the easiest and most doable to me-thanks!
Thanks!
Oh....wow.....he's so wonderfully calm and reassuring. great videos...
Thanks!
Great video! This has helped me & my dog with training. He hasn't completely mastered it yet, but we are working on it and I see improvements.
Excellent advice thanks, I will start this tomorrow morning on our walk.
Will this work for my older dogs! I cant wait to try! Thanks for your dedication to teaching! Your dog looks so happy to particapate too!
Thank you so much for uploading your vids! You truly understand dogs and how to treat them. Thank you!
Love your videos! You do a great job of breaking down all the steps.
Hey I just practiced this on our walk, she was MUCH better! Thanks!
this is a very easy way of teaching me to be a better dog walker for my doggie dog. Thank you so much for your video is was very informative.
Great video! This has really helped me to understand my Pitts behavior. Thanks!
AMAZING MAN!! now thanks to your video my 3 month Cavalier goes WILD when he sees the leash instead of whining and running to his bed
SUBSCRIBED !
I really like your video because of the in depth demonstration and the review in the end. Thanks!!! Going to try this!
What a lovely video will try this with my 7 month old German shepherd I think I have been rushing her training will follow your instructions.
I have used gentle leader, didn't worked, I went to a trainer but it only works while in class.
My dog is 1y 6m and... My hands suffer a lot and surely my dogs neck too. I almost buy the choke chain then I bumped into your video.
you have made me not to loose hope, I'll be even more patient and try this
I can't believe I've been doing this wrong. It seems dogs respond best with positive reinforcement. Thanks for the video :)
Best video on youtube on this issue!
Thanks from Germany!
What a great video. You are an exceptional trainer. The more people train their dogs the easier it is for us dog walkers to do our jobs. Keep up the good work.

Brilliantly detailed presentation, and breakdown of training steps as always!
i love your videos this is my progress - 2 days ive taught/improved my dog how to sit/lay/paw/roll over/stand on a objeect/stay/ and working on the pulling issues
you have great videos, thank you so much for these tutorials and tips!
