  • Welcome back to Talking Dragon Age, the show where I talk about Dragon Age. After the heavy videos about the Evanuris, today we take a bit of a break from the deep, headache-inducing lore. Instead, I take some time to gush about how awesome this quest is, despite the inconvenient name. Personally, I would have called it "An Unquenchable Flame". But, here we are.
If you have any ideas on how to improve the show or theories you'd like to see covered, please let me know in a comment or by messaging me directly.

This is my favorite quest!! I love Cullen’s quote “we’re dying, but we can choose how - many don’t get that chance”.

While this is a close second, I love Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts too much. The intrigue, how certain characters behave differently, seeing Morrigan again, and the ending of this quest is just so good. With how varied the ending choices are, I'm curious how they'll impact DA4, especially if you chose Gaspard for some reason. Never did that myself since I love showing up Floriane too much.

May the two who disliked this be given soggy cake by Barkspawn!
That said, after being brought to tears by the song I recieved the same line you did. I was going through a tough time during my first playthrough of DAI so it did wonders for my soul and well💖

I’m listening to your videos while I finish up work for the day and have to wait to dive into Veilguard, so many thanks for helping me not vibrate out of my desk chair and maintain SOME kind of focus. As a former Christian, one of the things I always loved about church was the singing. I attended pretty traditional churches, so it was mostly hymns much like the one they sing in “In Your Heart Shall Burn.” I get why some people find the scene cringe, but it really does capture something special about the act of singing in unison with a group of people as an act of worship.

I feel like this level remind me of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood in the beginning when the Villa you worked all of Assassin's Creed 2 to restoring and building up gets destroyed in the beginning of the game by cesare Borgia. Also I feel like Roderick Was udina done right as a character that was against you for ultimately the right and understand the reasons. But unlike udina doesn't go crazy in the end and work for the enemy for no reason but actually helps you in the end because you both want you both want it the same thing.

Wow, I guess I'm surprised that you're not plugging beginning at Therinfall. I've sided with mages twice and Templars once, and I honestly enjoyed both. I really liked all the backstory on Cole and his spirit form. I didn't feel like I knew much about Cole until I chose the Templars.
I wasn't all that enraptured with Corypheus (as done by DAI) and the hobbling through the snow always pisses me off as a fire mage, but I do like the song.
I think, however, I preferred the Fade in DAI (and never thought I'd say that; I regularly Skip the Fade in DAO). I had Lohgain my first run through, so I felt pretty spiffy about my DAO choices when I got to the end and had to leave someone; it's the perfect end to his redemption arc to sacrifice himself in the Fade.
Plus, you finally find out WTH happened in the temple, by reclaiming your memories. I loved that. Not a bad battle right before, with the Wardens, either.

In Your Heart Shall Burn is easily my favorite quest in DAI, DAI is my first DA game, I didn't know anything about Corypheus before, so when he showed up with The Elder One theme that just brought up my hype, I didn't foresee the twist, it's like a big surprise for me. Also after watched your video I notice that In Your Heart Shall Burn
and Trespasser, Corypheus and Solas have lots of similarities in storytelling and character-building, even the scene that Inquisitor's hand was too hurt he/she needed to kneel down before Corypheus/Solas could be seen as a parallel.

DA:I was my first Dragon Age game and I following along with wide eyes open. I did not have a party so my underpowered and poorly built mage relied on strategy to whittle down the templars, which made the situation really humbling and scary. My only complaint was and still is the lack of explanation on saving random villagers, which I completely did not notice was a thing.

I started seeing you a few days ago and I can't stop watching your videos.
As for the comment on this video, I LOVE, but I love music when we face Corypheus ... It's just great ...
When I first played it, I loved this part of the missions. And it was when Solas took the heart of the Inquisitor Lavellan. From the beginning (obvious) I had decided that she would have an affair with Cullen, but until that moment Solas had made me doubt; after that moment there were no doubts because his character showed so much of himself, that he conquered my Inquisitor. And I don't regret it, I played the game for the first time and experienced EVERYTHING that one experiences with respect to one of the best characters of DA, which is Solas. So .... it is also one of the best missions for me in the game.

This whole mission has Band of Brothers vibes in it. Yes I know the historic movie is different vibe, but that's what I think of this mission. A group of people trying to survive a war. It cuts deep when you can't save someone. That has happened to me more times than I am willing to admit. I have to save before each rescue. This just hurts.

I agree, the quest's amazing, and it definitely is the best in DAI. I kinda wish that closing the Breach would be more spectacular, not just a handful of mages or templars smashing their weapons into the ground and pretending to concentrate. Other than that, it's great.

I hate the options in the Keep for what the Inquisitor founds the Inquisition on in their speech. My Inquisitor chose the “I’ll do it because it’s right” option, but then the options in the Keep are Order, Faith or the Inquisitors own power. Well.... none of those. I just ended up putting order because my Inquisitor wasn’t faithful and definitely didn’t do it for his own power.

I put Inquisitor because it describes it as being either achieving power OR the urge to be an example. My Inquisitors want to set examples

Amazing vid for an amazing mission
For me the only issue with this quest is the slow trek through the blizzard. At first I loved the pacing of it but then my game decided that it would freeze and crash during the skyhold cutscene every. Single. Time. So I have to do that walk 2 or 3 times per playthrough :p

IYHSB is a great mission, but there are a few problems. First, I would have liked to have been able to save the game right when I got to Skyhold and before being named Inquisitor. Reloading back to right before finding the camp is too far back, and you're forced to sit through the song again. The song should have been skippable.
I disagree that Cole showing up here is better than at Theirinfall. At the Redoubt he plays a significant role. If he first appears at Haven, he has no involvement. Also, the flashes of firelight under the door make no sense with Cole, but they do with Dorian. On that note, Dorian's role seems much more relevant. He had to sneak through the Venatori to warn us. Cole on the other hand just stealth-killed the Venatori, which isn't as impressive. Also, the last Venatori just nonchalantly walks toward us while Cole stabs him in the back. Doesn't make sense. Cole also doesn't warn us about anything we don't already know or would have figured out. We see the army marching against us, Cullen knows who Samson is. As you said, it's impossible that Cullen saw Samson from that distance. With Dorian however, he had infiltrated the Venatori, so he had prior knowledge of Calpernia, which is why he can tell us about her. His exhausted state is also a good reason why he can't help us in the battle. Cole shouldn't have been exhausted from fighting a few Venatori who probably couldn't even see him coming. Dorian had to use magic, and is visibly tired from the fight. You can also have prior interactions with Dorian even if you choose the templars. This means Dorian might not be a stranger to you, and thus it makes more sense to let him in rather than Cole, who you've never seen before. Also, Venatori attacking ahead of red templars? Dumb. Venatori attacking ahead of other Venatori? Perfectly fine.
Another problem is how the camera always points to where Varric is in the scene after the Herald causes the avalanche, even if Varric isn't in the active party. The Herald also looks and smiles at nothing if Varric isn't there. So BioWare kept the animation of the Herald being patted on the arm by Varric in the game even if Varric isn't there to do it. Lazy. An easy fix for this would have been to just have Varric be there regardless of whether you had him in the party or not. If he isn't in the party, then he would be a blue right ally during the fight, and you would see him run back through the gates after the dragon destroys the trebuchet. And in regards to party members not picked, why aren't any of them seen in Haven fighting the attackers? We should have seen them fighting as blue ring allies and helping people evacuate to the Chantry.
The storyline of staying behind while everyone else flees was a tad contrived. Could have been done better. I had to headcanon that my mage had frequently walked the grounds in Haven (which I did anyway), thus knew about the mine-shaft ahead of time. Leaving the cave to march through a blizzard is actually a dumb idea when you think about it. The logical option would have been to wait in the cave for a search party, or at least until morning when the blizzard was over and the temperature was higher. I also think there could have been another route where you don't accept the role of Inquisitor. BioWare could have made it work. Especially since Trespasser effectively removed us from the position anyway.
Corypheus was good in this. His lines are all top tier. The right blend of villainous, learned, and mysterious. The game doesn't delve into his plans well enough, but we see more character development for him if we do CotJ. We get to see his memory crystals, his plans to bind Calpernia, and we get some info on him and Calpernia with the spy crystal. We also get some info from him from Envy. There is also potential party banter between Dorian and Cole about Corypheus, but only if CotJ was played (I think).
Another great thing about CotJ is we get to kill Fiona. With IHW we only get to kill Denam, which we wouldn't even have really met if we did IHW anyway. Though I will say his behemoth form is pretty creepy. To think that a person with a name could turn into that thing, really creepy.
