I love the L1011 always have and always will and I will always have a special place in my heart for TWA for in 1992 I was taking my dad out to Las Vegas on a trip that left St.Louis and the trip was over booked and I thought oh no! I want this trip to be perfect because my mom had passed away in 1991 and I wanted to help my dad move on and have some fun. So I went up to the TWA counter and said my dad and I have to get on this flight and told her why this trip was so important and she told me not to worry that she was going to take care of it and handed me back my tickets. As we boarded I looked at my tickets and TWA bumped me and my dad to First Class! Dad and I drank champagne all the way to Vegas and I believe it helped my dad out a lot. Thank you TWA and thank you L1011 for another very memorable trip.
TWA was just like that. Yeah Pan Am had cleaner nicer planes but be damned TWA treated there passengers way better imo. Towards the end TWA QC went out the window unfortunately. We got on a TWA 747-100 to Frankfurt out of JFk once and I swear I was scared to death. This plane looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a month! The floors where filthy and luggage compartments had broken latches and tears in the seats. These was in 1989
@@Freebird_67 In that case, I can't be surprised that bad wiring would be enough to blow up N93119 in 1996 as Flight 800. While TWA had high standards, it had to start compromising on them and cutting corners probably to stay afloat. High quality airlines like those were a dying breed by the 90s
@@brianw8105 It’s possible, the series of events makes sense, and it wouldn’t be the first time in history where bad wiring caused a fuel-air mix to combust
Worked for TWA from 1988 to 1998. Had the privilege of being on one of these aircraft celebrating the end of an era with the L1011. Vividly remember the parallel approach and landing of the two airplanes at St. Louis. Was awesome to see from my airplane the other aircraft as we both touched down nearly at the same time. Flew many times on this aircraft both domestic and international. Incredible airplane way ahead of its time in technological advances. Was a very sad day to say goodbye to this wonderful airplane. Even to this day in 2021, I miss this airline and the great people and coworkers who tried so hard to save the the company from the corporate raider’s hands of Carl Icahn. This was the beginning of my total disgust and hatred of these Wall Street investors who ravaged and destroyed so many companies in the 80s and 90s. Rest In Peace L1011 and TWA, I miss you both so much!
Now that was a proper sendoff, two L10s landing in parallel hell yeah! What a gem this video is now.....You even caught "Wings of Pride" (the red TWA MD-80 towards the end of the video for those not in the know)!!!
First airliner I flew on as a child. LAX to STL enroute to Dulles, red eye. Flew with my grandfather who was a WW2 dive bomber pilot. He struck up a convo with the captian mid-flight - turns out they knew the same people. That bought me a 20 minute tour of the flight deck - in action. Changed my life. You never know, could have been one of these birds. Great post.
Back during the glory days of Lambert. I spent many hours spotting planes there back then. 747s, 767s, and Tri Stars were flying in and out constantly. Now the place is shadow what it used to be.
I started refueling with Ogden Aviation in STL in 9/97....my first plane was on the last scheduled of the L-1011 , then on to a 747 where i pumped on 37,500 gallons of Jet A into 7 tanks. One hell of a first day!
This brings tears to my eyes. As a resident of St. Louis, I used to watch these tristars take off and land from the west end of the runways as a little kid with my parents. This is the STL I want to remember, not the current STL.
I miss this company, I was reminded of them the other day when I saw a bag with the logo on it, they used to come into London Gatwick, less than three miles away from me.
Looking at the L 1011 reminds of GREAT AMERICAN made products!! WOW where have those days gone. THis was my favorite Airplane to watch taxis, take off, fly and land.
Would you just look at all those jets at STL, today sadly the place is a ghost town. It is nice that you were able to get the "Wings of Pride" in with the L1011. Thanks for sharing, it brought back some great memories.
@loaferguy.What a aircraft when I worked at twa in the 80,s to 2001 these planes never ceased to amaze me.They landed in fog thicker than pea soup, rain, crosswinds ,you name it.They also had a plenyt of space in inside and were smooth sailing,Thanks for the info buddy,Peace.
Actually, to get real technical, I believe the last revenue TWA L1011 flight was between LAX-JFK back in 9/07. Thanks for the video. My Dad was a pilot for TWA for 39 years and my Grandfather for 38. The L1011 was my favorite aircraft in the TWA fleet.
Great video. Awesome to see 2 of them arriving at the same time. I used to take the L-1011 for granted when TWA and Delta had a lot of them flying. Now they are virtually extinct, and I miss 'em! The L-1011 had a lot of character and style - these new modern twinjets are boring.
I loved flying the L1011. I rode them on US flights and flights to Europe. The interior was comfortable and it was usually a smooth ride. TWA's other wide-body at that time the 747, rode and looked like inside what it was built for..a cargo plane. I know there were various corporate reasons to phase out the 1011, but that will not take way from what a fine plane it was.
Never flew one of these, but proud to say my Dad worked at Lockheed and helped to build them for the company....remember the trip to New York state when he was negotiating the price of the S-tube that fed the third jet engine in the tail...
@phillyslasher Sorry, you are right, at 4:07 that is a DC9. They were retired not long after this was shot. I thought you were referring to the red MD80.
I flew to Kuwait on a military-chartered World Airways L-1011 Tristar in April 2007. NAS Norfolk, VA to KCIA with a stop in Gander, Newfoundland, and also returned on it. A rare experience! I've also been on all of Boeing's jets except the 707; born just a little too late for that.
@NewPumpkin I was all ready to come up with pictures and links to the World Airways L-1011 but then I realized that you're right-World Airways did not operate L-1011s. I flew on ATA to KCIA on the L-1011-500 in April 2007 and returned to the US in the same aircraft that October. The Wikipedia page on the Tristar has a picture of it. ATA went out of business in April 2008.
I have to say I enjoyed those days, stationed near St Louis, flying TWA to and from BWI/DCA, the 727 and DC9, but I really miss the L1011, even though I never had a chance to fly on one.
@jetfreak4 Man, no kidding. I lived in St. Louis from 83-91. Used to come to the airport all the time and see what was then, like, the 12th busiest airport in the US or something. Now it's 30th. That place was hoppin' - miss seeing the L1011's & 747's. It's a great airport for another hub, though, so don't give up, especially with the new runway.
The DC-9s flew with TWA for several more years before being retired. I believe 2000 or 2001 was the retirement date, shortly after the 727s were retired.
I'm not trying to be a smart-alec, but can you help me understand how TWA could have a "revenue...flight" in 9/07 when the airline was completely absorbed by American by the end of 2001? I loved TWA, but I'm not following your statement here?
@dreadtodred L-1011's cruised at speeds only slightly second to the 747's and sometimes as fast......DC-10's, A300's, 767's of the time were all slower than the L10.
hope one day reconsider Boeing build planes of this model, this plane has been spectacular, and I would have loved that many airlines were asked this plane. In fact, a thousand times I give my favoritism towards the L-1011 Tristar that the DC-10
@FloodedChevy you also left out Lambert,..it has been COMPLETELY reconfigured since this video was made. Same with McCarran in Las Vegas, and Salt Lake International Airport. Widebodies nowadays are virtually nonexistent.
The current STL airport management leaves a lot to be disired.

Precious, magnificent footage to the cameraman. 👍
The first flight I was ever on was a TWA L1011 from Newark to Chicago to basic training in 1982.
TWA had about 300 daily flights at STL
@phillyslasher Sorry, you are right, at 4:07 that is a DC9. They were retired not long after this was shot. I thought you were referring to the red MD80.
Flying on an L-1011 was as close as you could get to a 747, loads of room and a smooth aircraft. All the planes now just seem so cramped.

great video do you know who bought the l 1011s and 727s from twa i like the 727 first favorite then all the rest boeing douglas and lockheed
@phillyslasher No, MD-80. It was a symbolic "Employee Plane" after TWA became owner-employee and was painted in a reverse scheme.
Will always have fond memories of flying TWA 1011's out of LGA in the late 80's-early 90's.
I was never a fan of the L-1011 but a huge DC-10 fan, sad to see these birds end the way they did:(

Good thing St. Louis built a $1 billion dollar additional runway to helop with all the "hub traffic" that ceased to exist once TWA went belly up.

Wait, There were TWA flights in '98 too! Including the TWA Incident In NYC
Flight 800 was '96
I wish Lockheed would make a commercial plane again!
wow the L-1011 and the Wings of Pride at 2:35

I was on the roof when this was shot.
Jerry who? Were you standing next to me?

TWA planes everywhere!!
