Rumour has it that the owl was sighted again... ua-cam.com/video/d-1Zn1LvhB4/v-deo.html
Thank you for the superb "weird, synthesized owl"
That insert/out should exist on EVERYTHING!!
Every time I see your reviews I'm reminded how criminally undersubscribed your channel is. Wonderful as always!
I just noticed I wasn't subbed, ty :)
I agree!
It's just a matter of time. This channel will blow up :) Greetings from Poland, loving what you do, your vids are very informative and funny :)
I just subbed but you’re right. Under 4K currently. Wouldn’t be surprised if that changes soon based on the strength of this video.
Not anymore 😂
These videos are excellent. I love the colors, the title cards, the use of Futura and the very 60s style performance of the copy.
Hands down, Sir!
This is an EXCELLENT review.
I'm sold!! Exactly what I was looking for and this review is top notch. Thank you!!
great review, showing both finished sounds and parameters...also classic patterns in action, and talk is in the right amount
an owl doing a complicated step dance routine which seems to include a part depicting the shooters bad table manners and inability to put on a t-shirt the right way.... made my day :D
i love my mk3 but its missing dynamic trigger inputs... so this one will be my next purchase. thx for the review. subscribed
Really enjoyed this review and subscribed because of it. Awesome naming of the different drum sounds, my favorite being “metamorphosis from frog to dog” (a little after the 6 minute mark). Definitely some good stuff in this video!
First video on the DRM1 MKIV where we can actually hear it! Excellent review, sound examples and some nice tips with the routing 👍👍
Great vision of what the sounds “do” with descriptions.... nobody has ever done good content like this of the drm1 ... good job!
Informative. Thorough. Entertaining. Well done!
This is informative and entertaining at the same time. Awesome content. Keep it up. Subbed.
Great video Captain!
Nice video, Captain! This must be the best sounding distorted kick on the market!
Awesome! Great product, great information, great visuals, great everything! one more subscriber.. excited to see more!!!
These sounds will go straight into my Octatrack. Thank you!! :)
Fantastic review and drum synth. Do want!
great demo! and the funny names for the sounds really made me smile 🎵👍 that owl story 😂
This may be the best pro audio review I’ve ever seen!
Excellent review.
The review it needed for a loooong looooong time
Great review and interesting channel. Subscribed from now on. Cheers
EGYPTIAN LOVER!👌! All really good demos- thanks!
Now that's a good review! Nicely done mate. Shows what it can do with a bit of style and humor. Also, how much it costs which is missing from a lot of videos. Many thanks from a satisfied MK111 owner.
Great review!
Brilliant channel my friend! Subbed.
Ordered mine yesterday ✌️ can't wait 😊😊
I watched Stimming's review, lasted about 7 minutes, drums were sounding like crap, too much talking, clicked away, landed here, now I'm smiling. thank you. this was the review I needed.
The general differences in sound could be because they also recorded the room tone through his mic. It creates more atmosphere when listening through headphones, but we can't do this because everything in the room starts rattling like crazy from the sub bass 😄. If you'd listen to this you'd think our studio was falling apart... which, come to think of it, could be an impressive effect.
@@CaptainPikant LOL! well, I mean, it was recorded fine, technically, but the demonstration didn't capture the essence of the instrument, and what it can do. for example, I wouldn't know that the snare sound of the machine is capable of so many sounds if it wasn't for your patience and dedication to actually explore it. Different people do the same things differently I guess. :) thanks again for the awesome videos. This format is very well thought out in all aspects.
I switch to here after about 10 seconds :) "Captain Pikant" seems to be the complete opposite, natural, unpretences, careful with the facts and above all have some sense of humor
@Yalek Yalula Since there ain't much info about the mk4, at the end I watched the all stimming video. I wouldn't call it a review, maybe an "artiest opinion" and it was hard to watch. it's DJ moves are embarrassing, the sound sucked and he seems to luck in knowledge about what actually updated in the machine. What a contrast to this great review.
Great video! I've been rocking a Mk III for years and years now and it has found its way onto a great number of tracks. Just the amount of different kicks you can get out of it is unbelievable. Kicks for life. I've got it perma-paired to an old Korg ESX-1 for some classic xox style step-sequencing. It's a little bit of a secret weapon.
Any desire to upgrade to the MkIV? I am not sure if the kick sounds much different, it's supposed to be tweaked a bit. Haven't used my MkIII in a while actually!
thank you for the trick at 11:50 very usefull! i didn't think about it
I had mine repaired after 10 years... it´s like new and it only costs 70€ including new box, cleaning and readjusting the pots... it´s awesome and my go to when I start. Best costumer support hands down
Another wonderful review! :-)
Would love to see review from you on Elektron stuff: Digitakt, Rythm...
great review. thanks.
gorgeous stuff
As a MkIII owner I'm really impressed by how clean the MkIV sounds
Awesome review, suscribed thanx
That is a damn nice review! Thanks for that. Oh wait do I hear you say you’ll be doing more drum machine reviews? Yes please! Subscribed ;)
Don't know how I've never heard of this drum machine before now, but thanks for the great review
Welp, you’ve convinced me... been waffling on the mkiii for a couple years, but this looks much more fulfilling than my RD-8 (which is great).
Nice review 🎼
What a great, beautiful, organized and intelligent review. And Radiohead!! Hell yes.
THis video is a class 1 patch book! Thanks for that!
Thank you so much! We hoped people would find it useful in that way!
Oh dear now I really want one of these- it’s the perfect answer to the SQ64’s eight drum track outputs. As an added bonus the snare doesn’t suck...
Thank you for a good review. Not too much talking, no boring ego BS about yourself or off topic banter, just showing good details and examples. It's odd how poor so many gear reviewers are on here. Another longer video on this with more examples, no talking, could be nice. And showing how you can set it up to sound like the classic CR/TR kits.
great video!
Warum habe ich diesen Kanal nicht schon vorher gefunden?
Yeah captain pikant ❤❤❤
Good review. I miss this drum module. Reminds me of the ADX-1 (the OG).
Subscribed!
Association are perfect!))
I'm glad the owl was unscathed. Soundwise this is the most complete drum synth. Connect the Drumbrute or a Q-bit Pulsar to these sounds and you have the perfect drum machine. It would be even cooler if Vermona created a version with a powerful sequencer (with pads, automation, probability, euclidean rhythms, ratchets, unquantize) as a second version of the machine.
Buy an Alpha Base
Your voice is SO GOOD DUDE
seriously you could probably do some sleepcasts at headspace
Thank you so much! 😊
Fantastic. I want one.
My Go-to YT Drum machine channel :P
Yeah, I think you would have fun fun with a 1010Music bitbox or a Expert Sleepers Disting EX next to it to just sample and store the obvious sounds from the Vermona and get back to the weird ones.
For me I am missing CVs especially with a sequencer like the nerdseq. But I love the range of sounds on this one.
I've gone through 5 different drum machines in the last year and a half. I started with the Drumbrute Impact and am currently on the Electron Analog RYTM MK2. Might sell it and grab my sixth. Love the analog RYTM but I have missed the knob per function of my Impact since I sold it.
i had the tr8, sold for drumbrute impact, sold for tr8 again, then bought an rd8 as well, now looking at this lol
Lol The way you named these sounds is brilliant.
Damn that's one of the best DRM1 review on youtube !!
But you forgot to show the basic toms setting for drum 1 and 2 : they can be used to make very simple and beautiful 808 toms !
Thanks for watching! To be honest we recorded so many different sounds that we had to cut dozens out of the review to keep it watchable, so the 808 style toms must have fallen victim to that.
@@CaptainPikant ahaha
Brilliant
From Vogtland With Love!
using the pan pot for wet/dry is brilliant
Nice!
Awesome review, thanks for not ranting lol.
17:08 I was thinking the same thing with a second snare, it just sounds so useful, shame there is only one.
I never thought I'd laugh out loud at a drum voice demo. That dastardly owl!
06:27 Mario jumping out of orbit. 😅😅😅 ♥️
This was hilarious as well as informative.
PS - The Owls live in the Black Lodge.
It is rumoured that Agent Cooper was actually the one shooting at the owl at 10:32.
@@CaptainPikant Bob is at it again 😆
Great video..I don't see it as an alternative to a modular system, but a nice companion--I never wanted one in the past because of the lack of dynamic triggers--now I can use my Five12 Vector eurorack sequencer to send dynamic triggers with things like cv mod in to the sequencer, and probability, to create drum patterns that are highly dynamic, complex, and responsive to voltages.
I'm not shore if the trigger inputs on this one go straight to the analog voices without some conversation.
you can use voltage trigger to midi converter (that translates voltage to velocity)
@@jamaharon I think they do? I could use MIDI instead, but I prefer not to.
@@NickHchaos I really wanted the trigger to work for me too. It doesn't make much sense. I may did something wrong but when I tested the MKII/MKIII timing with a sample accurate midi (ES-3/ES-5) the jitter was lower then with the "analog" triggers. the midi respond to velocity nicely. Maybe it's best to ask Vermona.
@@jamaharon Hm...although previous to Mk4 they were not velocity sensitive, so could that have something to do with it?
@@NickHchaos without testing it I can't really tell.
I have the mk3. It’s the upgraded model with the Crome knobs. I love this drum machine. I’m kind of jealous that the mk4 is out but no big deal.
i took the metal knobs off , they are too close together , smaller knobs are better . ( just this once )
It’s a drum SYNTH.
I won't ever look at an Owl the same way again! Thanks for this very enlightening video🤣
🦉
What are the improvements in sound from the mk3 to the mk4? The sounds are the same on both models? or there are some sensibile difference between the two?
Just a hint for all who want to trigger this via CV: This machine has actually 10(!) trigger inputs. The inputs for closed and open hi hats are separated. For comparison: A beatstep pro has only 8 drum triggers.
We want a video of the owl doing a complicated step dance routine 🦉
I wish Behringer would design the individual outs on their RD machines like on the DRM1 ❤.
Such a lovely machine, I run all out my channels out separately and thought I'd try the 15 step example in this using pan and discovered my kick channel's pan doesn't work :( still, such a tasty machine
Darn, they should have put 2 snares on this.
Great video 🫶🏼
Which sequencer you use for your exemples (Radiohead,…) ?
Thanks! We sequenced the DRM-1 from REAPER via MIDI-In.
Very nice review! Just one question, it would be possible to connect some triggers from an acoustic drum and from there to an amplifier?
I currently use a Coron ds8 coupled to the drum kick.
Thanks in advance.
Edgar.
Hi Edgar! That should work. I can't test it because we have the version without the trigger inputs, but if in doubt you could always contact Vermona.
Anyone know if the trigger connection direct or is there an AD conversion to midi to control the voices? Might be interesting doing audio rate control if so.
THANK YOU FOR the Add FREE content . thank you thank you thank you . Great review . Now I need to find 700 EUR .
I love they kept the sounds pretty much the same , why fix it if it isn’t broken!
Hi there, am a little bit new to analogue so just want to check a couple things please if someone wouldnt mind enlightening me. I want to be able to hook this up to logic pro x and effect stuff from there. Am thinking it might be an idea to buy a sequencer like the beatstep pro or something? So am guessing I can then connect the BSP to Logic and effect stuff in real time? Also can you separate all the tracks into your daw for control afterwords? So for example could you go from bsp then have all tracks on seperate audio tracks within your daw?
Can someone also please explain the difference with the trigger input version and why you would want to have these inputs?
Would appreciate any help as have been eying up vermona for ages now
Just might have to get one of these since it's cheaper than a pulsar 23 lol
nice synth!! does the Trigger version accept velocity via MIDI or is it solely via the analog trigger inputs?
The trigger version also accepts velocity via MIDI, the trigger inputs are just an add-on.
Great review! I like that they have an option to get one with Dynamic Triggers. Is there a good sequencer out there that has 8 dynamic CV or Trigger outs that would pair well with this?
You'd need 10 outputs, don't forget the two closed hi-hat sounds!
@@CaptainPikant Ah yes, good point. Do you know of such a sequencer?
@@TheArtisticFlavor Unfortunately not, I try to keep everything MIDI. But maybe someone else here has a suggestion?
was the deluge used for the polyphonic part at the end? Wavetable engine or something else?
The deluge is only used as a sequencer in this video (its time will come though). At the end after the multitracked overdriven Korg Monologue section you can hear a few different layered instruments. The Intern mainly used electric pianos and the TAL U-NO-LX-2. When I first heard her arrangement I could have sworn there's a shimmer reverb in there, but it's actually the layering of high octaves.
I love my Vermona PerFourmer mkII synth, so I was tempted to get the DRM1 mkIV, but as cool as it is, you can't map MIDI CC data to the sound parameters, so you can only modulate the parameters manually, which is a dealbreaker. Too bad, because as you demonstrate, it sounds great.
Why is it a deal breaker??
@@SPAZZOID100 - I know it's not a dealbreaker for everyone, but for me, I like my gear to be modulated by my other gear. I want the manual control *and* the CV on as many parameters as possible; that's what I favor with my modular synths and my Pulsar-23. I very much like the voices on the DRM1 mkIV, but I wish the instrument had at least MIDI CC, but even better also CV and gate inputs like the PerFourMer mkII, or both CV in & out and MIDI CC in like on the Pulsar-23.
Thanks for writing this, I'm a CC guy too so I'm shattered about this
I agree. Its very much...set parameters and keep them the same for the track you're working on, and change them at your peril....never to be quite the same again without major re-tweaking
In my little demo of the DRM Mk3 I called it "a sonic chameleon with the fattest claps and a droney soul." I really think this thing shines in live performance; you can take it from tonal and droney to fat and punchy to clicky and glitchy with a few knob turns. I love it. I highly recommend color-coding the knobs by function, as you'll see in my demo: ua-cam.com/video/Bg2KlC76tuM/v-deo.html
And you've even got a photo of Super Hans on there!
Nice, where is available these pattern fiche "radiohead - 15 steps"... ? thank you
You can find it on our Patreon www.patreon.com/captainpikant in the "Drum Patterns" category.
2:30 To use the *DRM1 in mono,* wouldn't it be better to pan everything Left _(or everything Right)_ and use the Left output only _(or right output)_ ? I guess the sound coming out should be louder, since it would be 100% of the signal, not 50%.
Very nice. I'm guessing the sounds are not gated off by MIDI note off (or the velocity zero that some drum machines send at the end of notes)?
Thanks for watching! MIDI note off doesn't have an effect, but I'll test the zero velocity next week and get back to you with the results.
@@CaptainPikant amazing, thank you!
@@synthnerd4539 Hi again, I've just checked: The sounds do not seem to be gated off by 0 / low velocity notes. Would have been great to get some Aphex Twin like breathing kicks with different lengths going. I wonder if that could be added with a firmware update? Do you know of any drum machines that support this kind of gating via MIDI notes?
@@CaptainPikant superb, thank you for the info! It's something I've noticed with some devices but seems to be limited to sampled sounds rather than analogue. Using drum machines as controllers for modules, most seem to send either a note off or a note on with 0 velocity almost instantly, and none of the gear I've come across yet has the option to change this response.
@@synthnerd4539 As a workaround you could sample it
Nothing sounds as good as the old Pearl Succussion!
Do i need a mixer or 8-12channel interface to multitrack mixing in Ableton?
Hi, I didn't knew your channel.,I've just subscribed. Do you think the Vermona could do a sort of Simmons Sds V style pounding sounds?
Thanks! To get closer to the SDS-V toms I think the Drum 1 and Drum 2 channels are missing a noise component. But in combination with the snare channel it should be possible. I'll try next week when I get back in the studio. Do you have a favourite song featuring the SDS-V?
@@CaptainPikant Edit: sorry for the long comment!
Thanks for the answer! I don't have a particular song in mind but I can put this as example, the snare "kicks" in :) at 0:36
ua-cam.com/video/mvgfcL2erpQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=WIRECOOLEY
This is the original promotional 7" fro the SDSV from Simmons themselves, it's also funny to hear it nowadays:
ua-cam.com/video/b1q3ckjCu1I/v-deo.html&ab_channel=JafafaHots
I always thought that the Vermona Drm was a good choice to have a sort of Simmons analog punch + Vermona's versatilty in making also weird/unusual sounds, but all the demos I've heard of the DRM1 are techno or ambient and not driving the pounding factor to the max.
Nord drum is another condenter as far as Simmonsesque sound + versatilty but I'm afraid I would suffer the menu diving and no multiple outs
@@LB-pp7pu Hi LB! Sorry for the late answer, I only just now had the time to experiment a little with the recordings. By layering a Drum 1 and Clap sound I actually got a nice pounding sound. I uploaded it here if you want to take a listen soundcloud.com/user-247747633/vermona-drm1-mkiv-drum1clap-layered
Of course this uses two of the DRM1's channels already, but if you want to sample and design sounds then I'd say go for it.
@@CaptainPikant Hi,I totally missed this! Thank you very much for taking the time for doing this experiment, sounds cool! I then purchaed a DRM1 3 years ago and I still use it. And I still love your channel, cheers from Italy!
Thanks for the review! May I ask where did you fing the patterns pdf ?
We transcribe and layout these ourselves :)
@@CaptainPikant Oh I see, and access with Patreon. Interesting.
Always Turn 2 Parameters of a Sound at the Same time 😉
Ohhh. I have a Mark II. Or maybe it's the Mark III. I got it for the trigger inputs!
Oh right, I noticed it in the background of some of your videos 😀
Lurking around :D
All reviews should include the price always. It's very annoying to search every time
is there MIDI CV control on the instrument parameters?
how do you trigger each one? are sounds chromatically assigned on a keyboard by default? edit: wasn't in 9+ min to get the answer...
