They've done trailers for a lot of the recent releases. Not all, but quite a few.
So like they said the hand and eye were created first, but not many people know that those ideas come from Michael Moorcock. He's listed as one of the inspiring authors for D&D and in his books they were the hand of Kwll and eye of Rhynn. Weirdly in his universe they were brothers and were super powerful beings who predated and later killed several gods, they kind of started with the power that Vecna sought out as D&D moved forward.
I think Eve of Ruin was supposed to be WotC's way to end 5e, and then launch the rumored 6e. It now sounds like, however, WotC will be using Eve of Ruin to do some significant changes to 5e while going for nostalgia.
Your first take is right. Vecna ends 5e and the new game mechanics and lore are explained by the changes wrought by Vecna in the final module.

This book looks like a traditional D&D adventure, which I welcome. I'm not really into cute and whimsical D&D with anthropomorphic animal PCs working as baristas (but, to each their own). The Hand and Eye of Vecna, the Sword of Kas, and the Rod of Seven Parts were all initially released as artifacts in 1976's Eldritch Wizardry - which should be included in the upcoming Making of Original D&D book this summer.

Also yeah, Kas became a vampire and was trapped in the Dread Domains. During the 2e Vecna modules that comes up quite a bit, I believe.
I have to agree that having a villain be evil because they are evil and not because they’re misunderstood has been done so rarely lately that when you see one it’s a breath of fresh air
My group is currently playing through theDMsguild: The Rise of Vecna & The Fall of Vecna modules. In those, Vecna has become a God and brought ruin to the world, and hero's have to stop him by collecting various magical relics and traversing different parts of the multiverse.
My big question is how is Eye of Ruin different from the DMsguild module? They seem very similar to me. A bit too similar for my liking to be honest

The most amazing thing is that Miska the Wolf Spider the second Prince of Demons, Wonder if they Queen of Chaos, Obox-Ob, Pazuzu and Dagon would appear too.
Interested to see what they do with high-level contents beyond what they did in dungeon of the mad mage
I think this looks really fun and I'm glad to see they are actually marketing it well. I have the Beadle and Grimms platinum edition pre-ordered, which is costly, but saves a ton of time and effort, and not having to print maps rules. I have a friend who has played in my last two campaigns (near the end of Shadow of the Dragon Queen now) who always wants to fight bigger badder things and is upset we don't get to take on Tiamat, so he is stoked for this.
All these "history of Vecna" videos and not one mention that the name came from an anagram for Vance (as in Jack Vance, the inspiration of the magic system for D&D)
I've been running a campaign where Vance Magus has been "helping" the party since they first made a name for themselves.
We had a trailer for the book for rime of the frostmaiden. There May be others.
Well this adventure is cool and I like the concept of starting mid-level and going to high-level, I'm just done with 5E right now lol. I just finished up a 3 year long campaign in 5E and it's just not vibe in terms of running a game.
I have not bought a 5e adventure since frostmaiden, but I am really excited for this and I am going to get it,
That vecna trailer makes me wish we got a vecna dlc for BG 3 before larian stopped working with WoTC.....
Think this might be a good blow out for this version of 5e...
This is the last big campaign they have for this year. Infinite Staircase is next. And then from there they can wash their hands and get ready for what they're doing next.
This would be a good time to.. if they wanted to... introduce a new campaign setting next year. new books, celebrate all the places they've been, and now they can start anew with new books.
Don't think I'm done with 5e. But if you're running this. This is probably solid enough to keep someone occupied until next year.
Here's a spoiler, Vecna is now Thanos with a snap bomb, rewrites DnD worlds so we now have a 5e universe. So Vecna wins the first round. They haven't said this would be the last of Vecna.
I'm all in. I asked my players if they wanted to play fantasy Infinity War when our current campaign is over and it was an enthusiastic yes. I'm not equally excited about all these settings (Spelljammer no thank you) so may swap one or two out.
I'm just hoping it doesn't fall flat

Paizo has been making trailers for adventures for years. Thanks for catching up WotC. Very interested in this since it seems like Ron Lundeen and Amanda Hamon (former Paizo staff) are involved. D&D has needed an infusion of new creative minds for years.

They are literally using the plot hook Zass Tam used in Robert Lee Byers 2009 book Unholy. And jusging by how they've introduced most of the settings like dragonlance and and greyhawk im not trusting them much to really expand on anything. Even if all the bs the last yr hadnt happened. Only thing im curious a out is the 5e syays for the rod of seven parts.

Tyranny of Dragons set had a huge hype and trailer when it was released. Better than this cheap Vecna trailer.
