Turn Your Drawings into Repeat Pattern Tiles!

  • Since learning how to make repeat patterns, I’ve gone on to create them for clients like Nickelodeon and GT Bicycles.
    When I first learned how to make a seamless pattern with my illustrations it felt like magic. It always seemed super complicated until I discovered how it works. Back then there wasn't an easy way to do it quickly. In this video, I'll show you two easy ways to make a repeatable tile that you can use to make fabric, wallpaper, a background for a website, or anything else you might want a pattern for.
    The first technique requires Adobe Photoshop, the second technique uses Adobe Fresco on an iPad.
    Also, you can win my iPad case featuring my pattern!

    🧙‍♂💨 Good tutorial. I do use the new(ish) built in pattern preview on the desktop version of PS, but the old offset method method results tend to be better. One of these years I'll have to time to really dig in and learn Fresco. Thanks for sharing.

    I thought the same thing about worms when they get cut in half. I was telling mu daughter about it one day and realized that sounds kind of impossible. One end is the head and one end is the butt, so how the heck does it grow a new head or butt? According to Google, it doesn't 😞 Which also makes you a monster for disfiguring that poor worm drawing. Shame on you sir!

    How come you only use 72dpi for this?

    • @chris-piascik
      @chris-piascik  Рік тому

      DPI is irrelevant when working in pixel dimensions because DPI relates to how many pixels are in an inch. If you are specifying pixel dimensions than that is how many pixels will be in your document. For example, 3000 x 3000 pixels will still be 3000 x 3000 pixels whether it's 72dpi or 300dpi because we are not setting any dimensions in inches. If the file was set up at 10 x 10in at 300dpi the file would be 3000 x 3000 pixels. If we put it at 72dpi, then it would only be 720 x 720 pixels-so when working in a physical/print dimension that's when DPI is very important.
      The reason I used pixel dimensions for this demo is because the Photoshop tool that splits up the tile requires you to input pixel dimensions-so starting that way just made it a bit less confusing for the demo.

    Couple of questions...
    1. Why 72 dpi? Shouldn't it be 300 if it will ever go to print?
    2. Once you go from Fresco to PS, does it convert everything to raster? Or can PS at least retain vector info so when you go back to Fresco it's still vector?
    (I asked these while watching so I didn't forget. I'll edit if you address those later in the video lol.)

    • @chris-piascik
      @chris-piascik  7 місяців тому +1

      DPI is only relevant when working in inches. Since I am working at a specific pixel dimension the amount of pixels is defined by that. 4000 pixels by 4000 pixels is the same size whether it's 72dpi or 3000dpi. A 10x10in image set to 300dpi would be 3000 x 3000 pixels. I explain it in detail in this video ua-cam.com/video/njRuEjBGU2Q/v-deo.htmlsi=uKtH_Bnzw_pwYOgc
      When you open up vector art in PS it becomes a smart object that remains vector.

    • @thehallhive9425
      @thehallhive9425 7 місяців тому

      @@chris-piascik thanks! I guess I never really realized that because with my photography work I'm always working with images that are in inches. But that's interesting though because anytime I'd resize for web posting I'd always resize the dimensions (inches) but also the dpi to 72, because every article I ever read said 72 for web resolution. I know it made a big difference on file size.
      Thanks for the smart object info! I thought that may be the case but I have yet to swap programs like that. I figured it would have to retain the vector info though, otherwise that would defeat the purpose of switching back to Fresco.
      On another note, I can't seem to tell Fresco to open in Ai and actually have it open over there. Or even be accessible to open in Ai manually at all. I know Adobe has gone away from synced files in the cloud. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it but I also wondered how that's even supposed to work with Fresco because it can't even be installed on a desktop, so cloud syncing is pretty vital. I'm honestly not sure I understand the details of the cloud syncing going away and what still works.

    • @chris-piascik
      @chris-piascik  7 місяців тому

      @@thehallhive9425 Ah yeah, the 72dpi web thing is sorta outdated as display technology has gone beyond that. Images on the web are designated my pixel dimensions for the most part.
      I sometimes have issues with my files opening on the desktop when I send them to illustrator. A weird thing that I do that always works (albeit mildly annoying) is to have it open in AI on the iPad and then simply close it after it opens. When you open up AI on the desktop you’ll see the file there.
      The cloud stuff that Adobe is getting rid of isn’t related to the syncing within apps. It’s actually just an additional file storage/sharing feature similar to dropbox / google drive that was additional to everything else. It’s a feature that I actually never used.

    • @thehallhive9425
      @thehallhive9425 7 місяців тому +1

      @@chris-piascik helpful info, thank you!
      I didn't do a lot of web stuff other than optimizing so fb didn't destroy my photos with their own optimizing, so I mainly just kept the 300 dpi for printing purposes anyway.
      That's a helpful tip about Ai and I will have to try it. My iPad is actually somewhat ancient and doesn't have much room so I had deleted Ai off of it but I'll put it back and test that out. Mostly I would just use Ai for tidying up vector points and smoothing out lines where my drawings sucked lol.
      Good to know about the files!
