  • Waldkonig produced an astonishing performance on debut at Wolverhampton to earn quotes for next year’s Derby.
    Bred to be very good being a Kingman half-brother to Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe hero Waldgeist, the John Gosden-trained colt powered down the Dunstall Park straight in the manner of a very smart performer in his own right.
    The 6-4 favourite was ridden by Robert Havlin, who told Sky Sports Racing: “He impressed me, he’d been showing some nice work at home, but you never know - first day at school.
    “He did a lot wrong, he was hanging, just through greenness down the back.
    “I don’t think I’ve ridden in a race where we started going even slower and slower from the four to pass the three, so I thought, ‘I’ve got to get out and do something now’, as he is a big, rangy horse, with a good old stride on him.
    “He quickened up good and he kept at it. He’s got a good attitude and you probably won’t see him now until next spring.”
    He added: “Let’s hope he can get to the standard of Waldgeist, that would be nice.
    “He’s done everything right first time, there’s not a bother on him and he’s not worried about anything, so it’s great.”
    Bookmakers were clearly impressed, with RaceBets slashing Waldkonig’s odds for Epsom to 14-1 from 50-1.
    Garry Coffey, racing manager to Newsells Stud, who bred and own the winner in partnership with Gestut Ammerland’s Dietrich von Boetticher, said: “It was terrific, he’s a very nice horse.
    “He’s from a family which is very close to us at Newsells and obviously Waldgeist is the older brother. It’s great to see him win on debut like that.

    The RPR of 94 on his debut is a very very positive figure .. it would put him in the Darley Dewhurst ... Positive recorded an RPR of 84 on debut and he rode not far off Pinatubo who is the highest officially rated 2 year of the last quarter of a century, higher than even Frankel .. so this is a very exciting debut effort, long way to go but nothing beats seeing the possible potential ahead.

    They were crawling. Topspeed 47 for the winner says it all: a half decent horse was entitled to sprint away. Nice turn of foot from a visual point of view for sure to be fair. Need to see it in a proper race again before saying this is anything special, though.

    • @robertobhro
      @robertobhro 4 роки тому +1

      @@danvalentine7238 Far from it. He travelled close enough to the sedated pace to profit from it. It's an advantage being close/up with the pace in a slowly run race. He was obviously much the best horse in a really poor race, hence could sprint away easily. None of the others in this field have even come close to win a race so far. That's not to say winner isn't any good. He may well be a good one. The future will tell. But it certainly can't be judged by this performance. Otherwise we'd need to call any half decent maiden winner a future superstar.

      Paul Morgan So do I to be honest. Would be good to see him go on from here and turn out to be a real talent which he may well be. I would say he has to be above average but as I said before, many are and he could be punted into 8/11 or something on 3yr old debut over a mile, get turned over and then go in at 7/2 in a better race over further distance. The horse racing game is very deep so you gotta watch what they do and where they position the talent. Know when to watch and know when to get involved (from a gambling perspective). I want this one to be top draw as it will give me big confidence in this sire going forward. By the way, still take heed of all new Frankel 2yr olds and the 3 yr olds having their first run. People have gone off them as they don’t always deliver as in Frankels first season as a sire but they will always have class and definitely worth checking the dam side of any offspring.

    • @phobsdsr4326
      @phobsdsr4326 4 роки тому

      steven clark tbh I would hope the owners don’t sell. They didn’t sell their star who was the sire to this one in the same colours who dethroned Enable going for her 3rd Arc and that may inspire them to hang onto this one. If not, big money coming their way and very familiar silks will be on display. I wouldn’t be surprised if K Abdullah snaps him up
