  • Monastery of Saint Therapont, subtitled, Contemplating the Dyonisian Frescoes, was composed for piano by V. Solotarev (Russia) in 1968. F. Lips (a world leading accordion artist/teacher in Moscow) arranged this piece for bayan (Russian concert accordion). Solotarev, who had majored in accordion & composition, wrote for all genres of music including much for accordion. I used to play this piece on the chromatic style accordion. It is much easier on the chromatic because it handles the large intervals comfortably. Also my chromatic accordion has 64 right hand notes compared to the 45 on the piano accordion. I had to make a few changes to the arrangement because of this shorter pitch range. Solotarev is one of my favorite composers. He creates many interesting effects.

Hello Heinz...I just wanted to say how fantastic this piece sounded, and to let you know that my father Leo Niemi passed on March 21st...he spoke highly of you, and I cannot thank you enough for the video memories you have posted/shared of him playing back in 1992....wish you all the best...Brent Niemi

This particular piece is unusual to say the least, but I don't like the theme, per se. It just doesn't talk to me or hit any rhythmic nerve, you know. Nevertheless, your playing is quite sensitive and does it justice and I appreciate that. Monastery of St. Therapont, I dare say, will never approach my Top 100. As for everything else you play -- A BIG THUMBS UP!!
