  • TWA Flight To The Sun Country is a color documentary film about getting out of the cold and going to Arizona on vacation. It was copyrighted in 1954 by Trans World Airlines, a major American airline from 1924 to 2001, owned by Howard Hughes. Narration was by Earle Luby. Produced by RKO-Pathe, Inc., an American film production and distribution company from 1928 to 1991.
    Views of desert cactus and the Grand Canyon (0:07-0:22). Intro (0:26-0:52). Shoveling snow (1:22-1:28). Family discusses going to Arizona by TWA to go where its warm (1:35-2:38). The family boards a TWA airplane in the snow (2:47-2:54). A Lockheed L-749 Constellation airplane (2:55-3:09). Interior of the plane (3:10-3:32). Meals served on the plane (3:33-3:59). They land at Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix, Arizona, land of the sun (4:07-4:46). They drive away in a 1954 Pontiac convertible (5:01-5:14). Desert view of mountains (5:23-5:25). Arizona Palm trees (5:28-5:31). They arrive at an Arizona ranch (5:35-6:13). They go to a casa, a little adobe cottage (6:14-6:32). Sunbathing by the pool (6:34-6:43). Swimming in the swimming pool (6:44-7:06). Playing tennis (7:29-7:44). Playing golf on a beautiful course (7:45-8:44). Visiting Scottsdale’s stores and buying western wear (8:46-10:17). Horseback riding over the desert (10:19-11:10). Saguaro cactus along the trail (11:11-11:34). Chuck wagon food, yum (12:06-12:32). Cowboy music (12:37-13:39). Rodeo parade with horses and floats (13:43-14:21), an Indian Band and dancers in full costume (14:22-14:50), a majorette twirling a baton in front of the band (14:51-15:04), Lasso Rope twirling on a trailer (15:05-15:10). They arrive at the Phoenix Rodeo, a championship rodeo (15:11-15:15). Events at the rodeo: calf roping (15:16-16:02), Bronc riding (16:03-16:55), clowns (16:56-17:03), performing dogs doing tricks (17:04-17:12), bareback riding (17:13-17:39), and bull riding (17:40-18:15). They take a drive to Mission San Xavier del Bac, established in 1692 (18:16-18:47). An Indian ceremonial dance is taking place there (18:48-19:09). The Indian Eagle dance (19:10-19:31). Views of 1954 motel styles (19:32-20:09). Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Arizona (20:10-20:15). Views of northern Arizona mountains and pine trees (20:24-20:43). They then came to the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River (20:44-20:54). They take a ride into the Canyon on the Grand Canyon mules down the Bright Angel Trail. Many panoramic views (20:55-22:09). They also visited the Hoover Dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River. Views of the dam (22:11- 22:31). An aerial view of Lake Mead, the lake behind the Hoover Dam (22:32-22:42). Fishing boats on Lake Mead (22:43-23:18). Jason Lucas, a fishing expert and writer of fishing books, catching a bass (23:19-23:41). An auto cruising visit to 1950’s Las Vegas and their casinos (23:43-24:10). Scenes of Last Frontier Village, Las Vegas (24:11-24:49). View of a downtown Las Vegas street daytime and nighttime (24:50-25:22). Legal gambling apparatus (25:23-25:25). Roulette table (25:26-25:31). The flight home (25:38-26:31).

    The Super Constellation in the closing scene is shown flying over nearly the exact spot that another TWA Super Connie collided with an American Airlines DC-7. It was the worst crash in America up to that time, with 123 people killed.

    I really admire your work preserving these old films. It is of great importance. The number of ads seems to be increasing quite a bit though

    Back then there is no such thing as coach seat on an airplane. Every seats are either first class or business class.
