    FNH did sell the FAL to the Germans. It was designated the G1. Germany wanted a license to produce the G1, but the Belgians were like, "Uh, nah mate, fuck that". German EXPAT engineers working in Spain at CETME came back to Orbendorf, West Germany. It was there that that they refined the CETME rifle to what we know today as the G3.

      @@Dan-be7iuit's not really. I briefly owned a honest to goodness hk-91 back in the late 80's. They're okay but not really anything to write home about. Average trigger and decent accuracy but recoil sucks compared to a FAL/L1A1 or a properly set up M14/M1A and yes ladies and gents I've owned and fired them all.
      All are great early cold war goodness and have different strengths and weaknesses.

      Missed a step. Step before those German Expats that worked on the CETME project, they were engineers at a little known rifle company called Mauser. Yeah, Mauser had been producing both the K98 Mauser, and the G43 (which was kinda crap, by the way) then decided that the other gun companies getting into this weird new concept known as a Sturmgewehr, and they wanted in. They originally produce a gun known as the Gerat 06, which is slightly cheaper to produce than the STG 44, but the Wehrmacht says "nope, not better enough to switch production, get bent". They analyze the gun, which used a fairly normal gas system, and rollers as part of the lockup. They realize that there were some cook offs that were fine because they rollers controlled it. This leads to a bunch of nerdery where they do math and create Roller Delayed Blowback system, and the Gerat 06H. This ends up being slightly lighter, but a crapload cheaper and quicker to produce than the STG 44, and more reliable, so the Wehrmacht says "Ok, this is good, lets produce this as the STG45M, by the way, we are putting your entire factory packed into a train so we can move it into the mountains. Why? Because the allies are basically at our doorstep and we want you producing guns to stop them completely steam rolling us." Fast forward a few weeks, and they were just starting to produce the first batch, and the Allies "liberated" the factory, had them finish what they were making just out of curiosity, so the STG45M totals about 50 guns in total production, mostly because some GIs wanted to see what came out the end of the line. After that, the rest happens, Mauser Engineers move to Spain, make the CETME in Roller Delayed Blowback simply because they thought it was a good idea, and should be used in other stuff.

      Germany rejected the FAL design because the sights were too high. FN balked, but the Germans were adamant, reasoning that ~4mm was the difference between an injured soldier and a dead one.

      I started shooting my dad's HK-91 around 1994 when I was 9. Used it tons through the years. When I was 22 he flat out gave it to me. It is my favorite rifle and almost an extension of myself. Sure, there are better fighting rifles, but the familiarity I have with the HK can't be matched. If I had to scoot and take a rifle with me, that would be the one.

    I absolutely get where the fascination with the G3 comes from.
    In bootcamp we had a couple of G3A3s in our armory. Since I really liked the G3 (or 7,62 that is) more than the G36 I did everything I could to shoot that bad boy once.
    So during a shooting excercise our platoon leader and I made a bet, which was actually his idea.
    I won the bet and got to shoot this beauty and immediately fell in love.
    Of course I had to clean the everliving jesus out of that thing afterwards but it was well worth it.
    Small fact:
    Although we replaced the G3 with the G36, we still have them in stock in case things go Volkssturm again.

      How abundant are the handguard bipods? Those little pieces of metal are rare surplus in America and damn near every HK91 owner wants one, but they're expensive. Humpty Dumpty was a big ol’ cannon sat on the fortified Colchester town walls. The walls were damaged and the gun fell. Because of the size of the gun and the rubble it was in. The kings men, even with the use of their horses couldn’t drag the fat bastard out again.

      Same here pretty much, I'm kind of an amateur history nerd who loves playing military FPS games. I finally decided to buy my first rifle in late 2022. It was a Colt AR-15A4, basically an M16A4 clone without the KAC rail, and no joke, the moment that I took it out of the box and held it in my hands, I was instantly hooked. Something about owning a piece of technology that's that iconic, recognizable and in our modern history just made me want to have more guns with that kind of significance. Now my bank account is also constantly hurting, but at least I'm investing it into physical assets that I know won't lose too much of their value in the future. Hopefully I never have to part ways with any of my babies, but if worse comes to worse, that's always an option.

    Hey, a little fun fact about Turkish armed forces and the G3
    G3 was our standard issue rifle until recently and we were extremely reluctant to get something new because our boys were loving the gun. in 1990s we tried to adopt 5,56 so we ordered some HK53 rifles because it was the closest thing to 5,56 G3 and it was awful so we blamed the calibre, turns out it was the gun that was awful and not the calibre which resulted in the Turkish armed forces adopting 5,56 extremely late compared to other NATO countries

    Thanks very much for this video! This rifle was what I was trained on during my military service 1988 - 90: a G3 A1, the version with the distinctive wooden stock / forestock! This is very hard to find these days - what you mostly get is an MKE T41, manufactured in Turkey under license, featuring black plastic for the stock and a different finish. Sometimes Gunsmiths would come up with G3s altered for civilian use, with the the fire selector blocked at the "E" position. Retail price: about 2.600 €, without accessories (e.g. scopes, picatinny rails, etc.).
    To me, the G3 is one of the most accurate semi - auto rifles, with an effective range up to 400m! And there is also a special version of this model, called the G3 DMR.

    CETME and HK 91 are almost identical. Funny how the US is going through a lot of expensive steps to make a new expensive round, the.277 Fury... that's basically a 7.62 NATO.
    With that action... careful with .308. Carry a broken shell case extractor with you.

    • @SPIRIT-117
      @SPIRIT-117 4 місяці тому +1

      I'm a big fan of 308 as much as anyone, I own an LMT MWS308 configured as a battle rifle (16 inch, TA110 ACOG) but saying the 277 fury is basically an expensive over-engineered 308 is pretty disengenius.
      308 is great out of 16 inch and longer barrels - but shorter than 16 and velocity starts to drop off a cliff and so does your ability to make easy hits past about 500-600 meters.
      16 inch and longer battle rifles are heavy and suck to carry, especially if you want to suppress them.
      Garand Thumb has chrono testing of the 277 Fury from the 13 inch and 9 9 inch Sig Spear rifles in recent videos and the results are mind boggling.
      3100fps with a 115g projectile from a 13 inch rifle and 2700fps with a 115g projectile from the 9 inch version. I assume the ballistic coefficients are similar to 6.5CM (so superior to 308) so essentially you have a round from a 13 inch barrel that's going to perform better at range than a 20 inch 308, and you can run it suppressed and be shorter.
      13 inch 308 velocity is probably somewhere around 2200, 2300fps and 9 inch would likely be less than 2000.
      The energy of 277 out of short barrels is actually insane, if someone else is paying for the ammo and producing it and I'm a grunt in the army I'd much rather carry a suppressed 13 inch 277 than a 308 suppressed in any length. 16 and over is too long and heavy, under 16 and the ballistics suffer.
      As a civilian, if they can get the 277 fury to market at 308 pricing and offer it in more platforms like the LMT I'd happily switch from 308 to 277.

    • @brotherbrovet1881
      @brotherbrovet1881 4 місяці тому +1

      @SPIRIT-117 As a retired US Army Light Infantry Squad Leader, who remembers even 5.56 being severely limited and rationed in Iraq in '04.... I say use what we've already got and make more of it, while being able to procure globally if needed.
      War is logistics, not tactics.
      . I've owned an HK Clone, 16" AR in .308, 18" AR in .308 built for 1,000yd shooting, and I am currently building my "ultimate " AR in .308 with an 18" barrel.
      I don't plan on doing any CQB. Anyone who thinks they're going to clear a building with less than a platoon doesn't know about clearing buildings. I'd much rather be the guy with a .308 in the building, waiting for bad guys to start stacking up, especially in our predominantly plywood and 2×6 framing in North America.
      The .277 Fury is a boondoggle. The M855A1 is already an armor killer.

    • @SPIRIT-117
      @SPIRIT-117 4 місяці тому

      @@brotherbrovet1881 it's not about armor defeat (or at least it shouldn't be but the army is touting this) , it's about giving every rifleman a 13 inch, suppressed rifle that's lighter and easier to deal with than any 308 rifle, and has better long range capability than any 556 rifle
      I'll take a 13 inch suppressed over an 18 inch unsupressed 308 any day, but the velocity on 13 inch 308 sucks and 277 fixes that.
      Agree that logistics is important - the US military industrial complex really needs to embrace this new round or it won't be useful. Good news there is the US Army is expanding the Lake City production plant to include runs for 6.8, and historially speaking when Lake City makes stuff it tends to stick around.

    • @SPIRIT-117
      @SPIRIT-117 4 місяці тому +1

      @@brotherbrovet1881 sig also claims the hybrid casings weigh less than 308 brass and the projectiles weigh less too, so a fully loaded 277 mag should save a few ounces over a loaded 308 mag. That might add up to a decent amount across 6 or 10 magazines.
      Also short barrels (providing you aren't screwing your ballistic performance) do more for your gun than just CQB room clearing.
      if 13.5 308 barrels had 3000fps nobody would use 20 inch barrels and the 277 fury would never have been made.

    I still have fond memories of my time in the Bundeswehr
    and was lucky not to have to shoot with the plastic G36, BUT I had the misfortune of serving at the exact time when the Bundeswehr was being "disbanded" after the fall of the Berlin Wall and doing my basic training in a "JÄGER Battalion" which had actually already been disbanded and was only reactivated for these three months of basic training. We didn't even have cutlery or plates in the canteen and walked around in civilian clothes for 3 weeks. Now comes the kicker, the G3s that we got came from everywhere... we had a mixed bag of all kinds... the first "test shot" with the blue ammunition (in our own clothes) looked like the training videos against Hezbolla or ISIS terrorists later on
    we had wooden handles (dark because VERY old) new wooden handles three different colors of plastic handles, mixed G3s with wood and plastic, double lock pins, dual lock pins...etc, one of my comrades even had a sheetmetal sliding buttstock from a MP5 prototype .... WTF!?
    My own G3 didn't even officially exist at that time according to the stamping on the housing
    a so-called paratrooper rifle (later G3A4k) built in 1957 ( the year of birth of my older brother )
    of course without all the markings on the housing. They were so mixed together that we all looked like Patrick Swazy in the film "Red Dawn"
