I still find it interesting how, for the PK machine guns (like the PK, PKM and PKP) Kalashnikov just basically turned the AK upside down and chambered it for 7.62x54mmR, and made a gun lighter (and iirc more reliable) than the M60
Plus its still in use today, at least much more than the m60 is.

    • @devilin100

@@bracoop2 Bunch, idk 12, countries use the M240E4, get into that designation in a minute. Its ike 3x as a many that use a version of the FN MAG. ~38 use the MG3. We won't count Canada, those are just ones that were left of second hand older tanks no one has been asked to replace and it works just fine. Its only a handful of countries that exclusively use the MG3. Trend is, Mg3 on vics, MAG for the dismounts.
M240B is used by 'one branch of one military' for most of its history, Its also not 1:1 the same as a MAG. Back in the day NATO parts interchangeability came up and was forgotten about since. Unless it come up when your primary base of fire stops working mid burst and you don't have a way to fix it.
Airforce in theory choose it as the M60 replacement but took forever to officially replace them. USMC used the M240G, which is functionally identical to the B but without a optic rail. Pretty sure they put a rail on it at some point. Navy used the M240E4 (which is FNs designations for 'their version of a 240B configuration' +/-), which is functionally a B with different gas system options when they finally gave up the M60s. We won't get into the L, D and C versions, specialist versions and the upgrade/replacement. D interestingly is just an FN MAG with a spade grip.

I spent 16yrs in my countries air force. We never got to play with the 58, but I was fortunate to use it on the range. The scenario was 12 man platoon (us) in an open position being discovered and attacked by a light mounted infantry unit. I was on the 58 on the right flank the 249 was on our left flank. I was told to lay hate as soon as the enemy dismounted 2x100 round belts. Followed by a quick barrel change and then take 3 round burst for another 2 belts with the second barrel. I weighed about 285lbs at the time and the 58 easily pushed me about 2 ft rearwards whilst prone. It was an absolute blast. I have been in 30yrds front of a mag58 firing rapid (blanks). And can confirm it makes you want to stay the fuck down. Even when you know it's blanks.

Oh! My dad was support for the support gunner in the Dutch Army back in the 1990’s, he’d carry along extra box-mags and barrels and parts.
He always talks fondly of those times, during our move last year, I found a couple of his old Uzi magazines lol (the Uzi was their PDW)

Oh wow again the Rhodesian and South African references were amazing. Saw some SADF photos in the video of troops with the FN MAG. South Africa used the FN MAG in the bush war and was the backbone of the troop or squad. Love the accent!! Good job. Not quite leo's level in Blood Diamond but with some work you will get there. Well done bru! TIA. As a South African this video made me smile.

So if I go up in a puff of smoke,
Well it's better than being a sloke,

oh man, this reminds me of my service. I was a pointman/mapper (my primary was a g36ka4), but ironically enough often had to take-over the role of lmg-assistant. Had a sour-sweet opinion on the thing: when it runs (while somewhat heavy for what it does) its fun, when it doesnt - well.... you have basically an over-weight bolt-action. During my time in service, ours did not work all that well, especially during cold weather/winter. The hilarious thing about that gun specifically, was that the gas adjutment bolt just FLEW the fuck out, on occasion, and that the gun ran so shit during winter that not even it helped with the missfeed.
tl:dr, my person experience with the FN mag LMG : oversized bolt action

I did operate the Swedish KSP58, variant a lot during my service. We had one in every plutoon. It was mounted on top of our vehicle. Also placed strategically on camps of whatever we were doing. I also shot a lot of AA practice with the gun. I totally loved it although it gave me a quite some burns because we often emptied a whole box of 250 shots before we took off :)
The Swedish variant have quite some external differences compared to the one shown in this video.

The 240 is either my second or third favorite gun I shot when I was in the army (behind the Browning M2 and the Mk 19 if you count that as a gun) but I have a bit of a grudge against it because it replaced the M60

    • @pyro1047
      @pyro1047 6 місяців тому +2

Such a shame we never put in the time or effort to properly fix the manufacturing defects and design flaws of the M60 while she was still in frontline service.
Only took a private company that was a subcontractor on the M60E4 that went "Well that fixed a lot, what else is left?" And they made the M60E6, which beat out the M240/FN MAG and was adopted in the 2010's by the Royal Danish Army. IIRC it even beat out the FN MAG for Mean Rounds Between Failures or Stoppages in some tests.
I don't think it fully replaced the MAG, and is in the squad support weapon/SAW category, but I could be wrong and it's much wider issued.

Still highly recommended units and people practice and understand cover shoots. Put a steelie or a gong target 70% behind cover and periodically ring the gong. Also if your using a nutsack the last 5 rounds of your belt need to be solid tracer to let you and your team know your ammo status. Practice both.

Not to nit pick, but the 240, is actually an updated mag 58, which is not an upside BAR. More like a belt fed bren gun, which is a British version of a Chech 26 LMG, which is an upside down, simplified BAR.
