    Really well done comparison and I liked your reasoning for different use cases and different material choices. I have the same camo Duplex and love, love, love it. Easy to setup, very spacious inside, virtually water proof and great ventilation. And camo looks very sharp, making it as well one of the prettiest tents in campground. I did not play with different tent pole height settings, but it's great to know that you can pitch it very low if you are concerned over the driving rain, high wind, cold or combination of the above.

    Thanks for the video. I own both the Duplex and the Solplex and think that you did a nice job comparing. The Duplex is great for 2 people and palacial for 1. The Solplex was a surprise for me. For reference, I am 6'2" and about 250 lbs. I bought it for fast and light trips. I found it to be very comfy for 1 person, mostly due to the vertical sidewalls. Regarding stakes, I hated the Zpacks V stakes. I simply destroyed them too quickly. I do love the MSR Groundhogs but, if I'm going somewhere where I know the ground will be hard, I carry the MSR Needle stakes and find them to be darn durable.

    Great comparison, especially like the pad/bag visuals. Would two 25" wide pads fit in the duo? And you briefly mentioned condensation issues with the triplex mesh. If you are getting water running over the mesh and into the tent, it's because you're using one stake on the side instead of two. when the upper-sides are staked too close to the tent, it angles the mesh up and away, causing the water to flow over vs through the mesh. You may be better off not staking the upper sides at all.

    I got a Duplex (spruce green of course) a few months ago, and i REALLY like how quick and easy it is to set up and take down!!! The main thing i do NOT like about it is that if i close the doors, and wake up and have some urgent peeing business in the morning, it is a bit difficult to open from the inside... Another thing is that i am used to a 3 person tent, so the Duplex felt kinda small, making me think about getting the Triplex instead. But as the small footprint makes it much easier to find a place to set it up, i guess i will stick with it. I probably just need to take it for a few more trips to get used to it, and then im completely in love with it :P

      As you use the door tie outside they get easier and easier as you get better and better at undoing them. Also one if the best things I've ever done is start using a pee bottle. Now I never leave my tent until I want to. Happy trails!!!😀

    My wife just told me she bought me a #Zpacks Triplex for Christmas. Ive been wanting a Zpacks Duplex for over a year; however the cost just causing me to take a step back. Since my wife is now back packing with me, she got the Triplex as it has the same footprint as our current tent and gives us room for our backpacks in bad weather or to keep the critters away. Gonna be nice losing 5 lbs off my back. Question: Did you have to do any additional seam sealing once you got the Zpacks tents or was their seam sealing fine for your thru-hike of the AT (Green Tunnel)?

      Not By Sight it’s for me and my girlfriend to go backpacking. She’s only 5 3, but I’m 6 2. We don’t need a lot of space, and we use smaller sleeping pads, but 45 inches across is pretty small. However, the size of the campsite required for the triplex is a concern as well. Probably gonna wait until trial days to see both tents in person.

    • @NotBySight
      @NotBySight  6 років тому +1

      @@Yeagizzo We measured them out on the floor and put tape down, then laid down inside the tape. The only difference is the width. If you're ultralight and minimalistic, you'll be fine with the Duplex. If you're more conventional you'll appreciate the Triplex.

    Really enjoyed your comparisons. Do you think you'd go with the Triplex if you were to thru-hike with a partner versus the Duplex? My girlfriend and I are considering pursuing a thru-hike and I've been agonizing over the Duplex versus Triplex. The Triplex footprint seems massive, but the duplex seems like it might be a little bit tight for me. I'm 6'4 and about 215. She's much smaller, but I'm not sure I'd be able to avoid my toe box rubbing against the wall and sucking up dew (which drives me nuts!). We're pretty experienced re: pitching tents and finding space, but don't have experience on the PCT/AT. Any additional thoughts? Thanks.

    • @NotBySight
      @NotBySight  5 років тому

      Hey thanks for the compliment and your sure welcome! So you are exactly right the Tri plex is huge and the duplex would be tight. With you or height I would go with the Tri plex for sure. You're toe Box will rub more often in the smaller tent. With the Tri plex you can lay at more of an angle and on the Appalachian trail condensation is a real issue. I hate my toe Box getting wet as well. Lol Let me know if you have any more questions I hope I helped some.😀

      There is a little learning curve with these tents as far as how and where to pitch them according to weather etc. I had no issues with mine or really ever heard of any issues on the trail as far as rain. The soleplex is only a consideration if 4 or 5 ounces lighter is a big deal or not. Otherwise the duplex is very nice to have more room. Only when I'm crazy ultralight do I take the soleplex. Hope that helps! Hike on!!!

    • @EarlyRiser71
      @EarlyRiser71 6 років тому

      I have a duplex, used it on my entire AT thru hike, I am 6'4" and the tent is perfect. I can sit up comfortably inside. I do sleep on my side and if you are a back sleeper, your feet will often rub against the sides of the tent. This is only a problem if there is some moisture on the tent walls, or if it is raining and your feet push down the bathtub floor and get some splash on your foot box. Overall, this is the best tent I have ever used, and even after my thru hike, it looks brand new. Slept in it over 100 nights.

    Hello Disciple, thank you for your excellent comparison video. I'm sorry you shrank by an inch :) but your height info was important for scale, as many reviewers don't lie down AND tell us their height. Did you find the extra tie out on the triplex at each end helped to extend the length compared to the duplex? Even though the specs on the zpacks website show that the only difference in size is the width, your triplex looks longer than your duplex - is that right? Thanks again.

      Howdy Nadine! I believe my trip and duplex are the same length. Must be the material and optical illusion.😀 Yes I like the double toe out on the trip. In strong winds it's needed. Hope that helps. Thank you for the kind words! Hike on!

    Thanks for the comparison. Very helpful. In your opinion, do you think the Triplex is big enough for two people and a 60 lb. dog? Based on the video, it seems like it might be close quarters.

    • @NotBySight
      @NotBySight  6 років тому

      Glade Sowards Close quarters is kinda personal opinion. If you are used to a tiny tarpmthat you have to sleep on your side when it rains then the triple is huge. If you are used to a 6 person tent then it will seem SMALL. I think it would work pretty well on size but I am more concerned about Fido's nails on the floor. But that's w any tent. Thanks for watching,! Happy trails!

      Thanks for the response. I use a Solplex regularly for solo trips, so I’m used to Zpacks’ construction and pitch. For two and a dog, I’ve been using an HMG Ultamid 2 w/ floored insert. No problems with the pup’s nails at DCF 1.1, so I’m hopeful that DCF 1.0 would be okay. I’m more concerned about there not being enough room. The Ultamid 2 insert width is 76” (16” wider than the Triplex), but the walls pitch in pretty quickly, which limits the usable width. In my experience with the Solplex, the vertical side walls make a big difference with overall livability, so I’m hopeful that the Triplex would yield similar benefits. In any case, thanks for the feedback. My guess is that I’m only going to know for sure by trying one.

    Hi, can I ask when did you purchase your duplex Camo? Only asking as I have received mine two weeks ago and my inside storage pockets are on the inside entrances apposed to your head and feet end? Is mine a manufacturing defect as every video I have seen on the net are in the same position as yours head and feet ends.

    • @NotBySight
      @NotBySight  6 років тому

      DjPepelicious Definitely sounds like an email into ZPacks might be in order. I have had my Duplex since January of 2017. We received the Triplex in March of 2018 with the storage pockets at the head and feet. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

      Not By Sight thank you for taking time to reply. I have sent Zpacks an email letting them know how disappointed I am that they let this leave the workshop with no quality control, but at the same time the workmanship is second to none.. I’m sure they will be more than happy to sort it out. Thanks again for the reply and keep the vids coming.

    • @crosske1
      @crosske1 6 років тому

      DjPepelicious - Did you get a reply from Zpacks and what did they say? I recently ordered one, but it hasn't arrived yet and I was expecting the pockets to be at the head and feet until I read your comment. Upon further examination, Zpacks website says, "Mesh pockets are conveniently located near each screen door so that they can be accessed from inside or outside the tent." I'm curious where they are going to be when I receive my tent.

    • @DjPepelicious
      @DjPepelicious 6 років тому

      KC Cross Hi, they did get back to me. Unfortunately they are not willing to cater to my needs or should I say at the time of purchase their website clearly stated the pockets are at the foot and head ends so they should have shipped it that way. Had I placed the order after they updated their website I would understand and accept the new pocket location.
      I also found some inconsistencies with their sewing of the tent. I requested a new tent and also asked if they could put the pockets at the head and foot end, upon the arrival of the new tent the pockets were sewn on the sides again.
      The tent I returned had been lost or stolen and I’m chasing up a payment through the courier company.. a bit frustrating on my side as all this could have been avoided if they had sewn the whole tent perfectly and put the pockets on the head and foot end..
      hopefully this made sense as I’m trying to finish up for the day haha

    • @crosske1
      @crosske1 6 років тому

      Thanks for getting back to me. That's too bad you are having a rough experience, I hope I have better luck. I guess I'll consider spending another $20 (even more money!!) to order two of their mesh tent pockets and install them where I want to install them. I have always preferred having pockets at my head. It would add another 8 grams to the tent, but I don't want to do too much because the entire point of this tent is the low weight.

    • @NotBySight
      @NotBySight  5 років тому +2

      Great ?! So one of the downsides to non freestanding tents is super hard surfaces. You can do it by looping your outlines around rocks and or logs but it's not as bombproof as regular stakes mostly because your trekking poles may move a little on ya. That said, I camped in rough places multiple times during my thru of the AT and it always worked ok for me. Freestanding tents def. Work better if you are on granite most of the time, but wear will be a major issue. I was able to find good campsites most of the time. Hope that helps? 😀 Thanks for watching!

    The video was great and you spoke well but the narration was not balanced. There are several videos detailing problems with Zpacks tents but we don't hear about any of these in your video. Overall, sounds more like a commercial than a review. Nonetheless, I appreciate you sharing your experience with your tent in your thru-hike.

    I completely disagree with Zpacks being "true" about sizing...The Triplex is a wonderful 2p-shelter as the Duplex is a 1,5p tent but 3 or 2 p in the Plexs is rather ridiculous.Just because you throw in some mats doesn´t show the room feeling.Still a very good comparison.

    • @NotBySight
      @NotBySight  6 років тому

      I completely agree w you about this vid being a GREAT comparison! LOL! All I can say is we are pretty UL and while I used the duplex the whole trail my wife joined me for around 25+ nights together in it. We did very well together, keeping in mind we are talking backpacking w UL gear here, NOT a luxury car camping trip. Some sacrifices have to be made if weight is a concern. Oh and my wife and I are not small by any standards. Lol. To me the duplex and for that matter the tri also just sleep better than the inches say it should. They are "roomier" than you'd think I guess. Hope that helps! Hike on! 😀

    • @chrisdus9613
      @chrisdus9613 6 років тому

      @@NotBySight Sorry,what is "pretty UL"? Not to be misunderstood: I use the Altaplex for solo-trips and a Triplex for 2/3-season trips and can´t see why I should NOT carry 100 gr more to have a massive benefit from its extra space.I do know the Duplex quite well but there is something in UL what makes it rather ridiculous when it comes to its limits (and limitations). And if you say 100g more is luxury car camping I can´t take you serious anymore.It´s kind of typical UL-blah-blah ,isn´t it?;-)
