How I Pitch My Zpacks Duplex Tent
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 вер 2024
- I bought my Duplex tent just before Zpacks made some upgrades to their tent in 11/2015. I struggled trying to make a perfect pitch with my Duplex in the beginning of my hike.
After a little time on the Trail, I came up with this technique that works for me every time to achieve a perfect pitch. This is a little different than what the Zpacks tutorial videos suggest.

Like it. By putting the rear trekking pole in first and pulling taut, you pull the first two corners into correct position. Thx brother.
I was just thinking as I watched this video again. This simple little tweak can also be used to perfect pitch the SMD Lunar Solo (start at the the back two corners, front pole, back stake point and then two front corners) or the SMD Lunar Duo (basically follow the same method displayed). Just want to say that this video is absolutely paramount information when you consider its application beyond The Duplex. Thank you again for this pitch method demo.
Thanks Tuba! I have never pitched a Solo Lunar and was wondering the same thing. Thats awesome. I'm glad that you enjoyed it so much and find value in it. This method helped me out so much on the Trail. Wish I would have developed it before I started.
It works perfectly on my Durston X-Mid. I'm so thankful for this method!
After spending 3 nights on the AT struggling with the pitch of my Durston X-Mid, my hiking partner shared this video, which she had watched for her Duplex. Even though they're clearly different tents, this method was a lifesaver! I had the perfect pitch in under 5 minutes. Genius! Thanks, Bigfoot!
Makes perfect sense, you're setting it up the same way an A-frame is set up. Perfect.
I have had a Duplex for about 6-7 hikes and each time it was set up differently (unintentionally). Frustrated I found your video and used your method to set up my tent this last weekend. Wow! What a difference! Super quick and easy. Like you said " A perfect Pitch". Thank You!!
Thanks again and again! Actually, every time I set up my Duplex! 👍🏻😁
This is how I set up an A-frame tarp with trekking poles so it makes sense that it would work on the Duplex since it's basically an A-frame. You sir are a genius. I will try this on my Solplex since the idea is the same. Zpacks should change their "official" method to this and credit you. :)
Thanks Huy. I let them know about this way and I think they have sent it to folks that are looking for different ways to set up theirs. Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks! Happy Thanksgiving to you too.
Just got duplex in mail and your method worked perfectly first try. Stood there in amazement thinking that was just too easy! Thanks!
Just got mine! Set it up for the first time today, only problem I had was staking it out correctly and was under a wind advisory lol. I think it's going to be great! Thru-hiking the 160 mile River to River Trail next week, I can't wait!
Nice job. I pitched my duplex in my backyard a few hours ago. Tempted to strike and pitch again using your technique, but it's dark now, I'm tired, going to turn off the computer, head out to the backyard, crawl inside and sleep...
I recently bought a triplex, but from their bargain bin. Turns out a bargain bin tent could be an older style, so I also didn't get line locks (except at the top of the poles and on the door hooks) or the door toggles. Line locks were easy to add and I've got the toggles and will install them when the frost gets out of the ground enough for me to do a first outside pitch. The clip that holds the 2 doors together was also some sort of hybrid between the carabiner and the dual clip... maybe it was a prototype. Anyway, the cost for the toggles, replacement dual hook clips and line locks was still way less than what I saved going for the bargain bin and I did get it very fast. Also, I like to modify my stuff to make it mine, so I added a few other bits to the order so I can play with it a bit to satisfy that need in me. The tent doesn't show any signs of ever having been pitched before except that the lines had been tied on already.
I like the way you pitched the first pole on the opposite side from your first 2 staked corners. I'm going to try that. It looks more stable when half pitched, so would be good in the wind.
I camp a lot in Provincial Parks where I have to pitch on tent pads which can be very hard. So I always take a couple of Ti nail stakes. I can hammer them into the hardest ground. If I need to I can pound in the nail stake to make a pilot hole then pull it out and put another stake in the hole.
Thanks for sharing Flash and glad you enjoyed the vid!
Hey Rory, Greetings once again from up in Canada. Thank you for yet another quality video. This past Summer I've purchased the Triplex version of your tent. I love your set-up method over the Zpaks demonstration method regardless of what type of line system being used. "Getting er done" quickly and efficiently is what it's all about, especially in brutal weather! 😉 On another note, thank you for posting your and Ms. Bigfoots trail magic adventures. It was fun following along from behind the scenes. Also, it was fantastic that you were able to colaborate with other "like minded" Trail Angels, sharing your giftings and talents. Way to go Ya'll! Oh my, I'm starting to sound more American than Canadian eh!😉 Getting ready for 2019! Lamplighter out! ☺
LOL, you are so funny Lamp. I'm glad you enjoyed the videos. It was so fun being back on the Trail and helping out the Hikers. If you are starting to sound like an American now, you might be in for some trouble when you spend a Summer on the Trail!!!
sweet win!! I'll be using the Bigfoot pitch of my Duplex, this year on the PCT 🤘
Right one Brother!
I just bought my duplex and will be setting it up soon. I'll be using your method, will let you know how it goes. Thanks for the demo.
Cool, look forward in hearing back from you. Thanks M G
perfect info . I like the zpacks gear and tents but I am using a Big Agnes copper spur hv ul 4 2017 version . Because I have to take my 9 year old daughter and 3 puppies when we go . I know it's not light . Enjoy your info . I can see the advantages of your tent set up when it's raining or windy . take care . ttyl .
I used your method on the Altaplex. Worked perfectly!
I wish I would have seen this video before I pitched my tent last night! This looks a lot easier then the other ways I’ve seen people explain this. Thank you for this video! I look forward to a much easier experience next time. 🙏🏻⛺️☺️
Cool! I can hardly wait till my ankles an knees heal completely (enough) to start backpacking again! Thank you. Excellent technique.
Thanks Bigfoot. Very concise and exact. I see the logic and the ease in doing it your way. Spot on mate!
Thanks Tim!
ive had a zpacks soloplex for a couple years now and i tried setting it up a few different ways and its never perfect. i just tried your system out in my yard and its dead on! thanks for the tip. super great advice.
+GankenBerry Awesome! I'm glad it was easier for you!
He Bigfoot. I'm very close to buying a duplex, a lot of money for a tent, so i have researched a lot. This is the best set up I've seen fella, top man. shall copy you if i get one.
Thanks John. Check their Bargain bin from time to time, might be able to get a discount there. If you are thinking about going to Trail Days, might be worth checking them out before you buy.... I heard them giving some deals to hikers on their tents.
wish i could go to trail days but I'm UK based so a fair trip, though am considering the PCT in in the next few years maybe.....
Very useful info. I have used my Duplex tent three times. The first time, I had difficulty setting it up. Then I watched a couple of UA-cam videos and it became easier when I used it the second and third time (being a multi-day backpacking trip). I'll try your method next time when I take a multi-day backpacking trip coming up over the Labor Day weekend of 2018.
Thanks so much, Bigfoot. I upgraded from a one person to a two person tent this spring and can't get the pitch to suit me. Can't wait to try this method.
that is a highly effective way to set up the duplex. thanks Bigfoot! cheers, Sealegs
Thank you. Excellent info. I have the newer version but will certainly try this method.
I have a cheap chinese knockoff of this tent and I have been havving trouble getting the perfect pitch. I really look forward to trying this and seeing how your approach works. Thanks man! Happy trail days!
+Arnold Kotlyarevsky Let me know how it works. Glad it was helpful.
I use the $1 aluminum tent stakes from walmart and keep them permanently tied to my tent and when I fold it up I just stuff all the tent stakes into a eyeglass soft case to keep the tips from ripping a hole into it during storage. I also have the duplex camo from the bargain bin and its the best tent I've ever owned. no more wet sleeping bag foot box from sil nylon tents soaking through. I also keep a micro fiber cloth to soak up the water in the morning.
I do the same with a cloth. Best tent I have ever owned by far.
this will be a great change in my setup! Thanks for sharing✌🏼🥾
A big THANKS! Followed your instructions and all is well... on the first try! One thing.... you didn’t say “where” you had your trekking poles set? Is it 48”, like Zpacks?
Just set up my new Duplex using your instructions. Fast. Perfect. Awesome - thanks so much!
It works great with the Triplex also.
nice, my hunt for a good method is now over! thanks
WOW I’m impressed. Definitely going to try this method next trip.
Zpacks need to change their video for setting up the tent. This is so much better.
Great info. Thanks. Will use your method next trip
Just set up my new Duplex for the first time, wish I had seen this first. haha Thanks for the info, that looks like it will cut down on my adjustment time.
Good information. I used this technique on the AT in 2018. (Box Turtle on the AT 2018)
I like to always pitch my tent in a storm-secure fashion, just to be ready. This i necessary in rough environments!
Give the actual carbon fiber nail stakes a try. I love them. The grip really well and are even lighter than the Ti shepherd's crooks (but are a bit bulkier).
Hopefully Zpacks will have them at Trail Days and I will check them out. Thanks!
Thanks brother! Very helpful.
What height do you put your trekking poles at? I imagine the same height works for both the Triplex and Duplex?
Keep kicking myself for not getting the camo. Will try this technique next time I pitch it.
Let me know how it works for you. I love the look of the camo.
Excellent instructional.
I would think something like Dutchware's Tarpworms would be a sweet match for this. I use them on my Cuben Fibre Tarp from HammockGear, seems a similar pitch idea to that. So quick adjustability.
Tarp is just 1gram, 4 grams with Zing-It and shock cord.
Looks like the probably would work with the way the setup is. Thanks for sharing!
What height do you set your poles? I was looking at the non adjustable carbon z poles for lightest weight. They come in 120cm/47.25 or 125cm/49.25. Either work for me hiking.
Awesome, thanks
Wonderful, thank you, will try it out as soon as I can. I wonder if this will work with my cat cut tarp too?
Thank you!
Very helpful, thanks!
Excellent. Thanks.
Your videos are great! I'm just curious to what length you set your trekking poles to for this set up?
I’m curious. Did you fold and roll your tent up every morning and put it in the stuff sack, or did you just stuff it in?
Hey Bigfoot, just used your link on Amazon. Gots me a pair of insulated camp booties. The hike I just went on, my feet froze all night, even with 2 pairs of socks on. Left my underquilt at home. Dumb idea..... Later my friend......
I find that the footbox with down quilts gets squished and no longer provides warmth but wool socks for me work great.
Thanks for all your support Cocoa, I saw those booties on there.
I am thinking about getting a pair of down booties sometime myself when I start to do more of the cold weather hikes. There is nothing that is more uncomfortable at night than cold tootsies.
True that. Lol
G'day. Overall if you were focused on just setting up and not making the tutorial, how long would you estimate the setup time to be? I have a TT Moment DW and its the fastest tent I've ever put up but the Duplex is heading toward half the weight and I've started using trekking poles anyway so now it's a valid option....if setup is within a roughly similar time frame.
What length do you have your trekking poles at?
Where did you get the Tit J stakes from? I lost a few Shepards hooks from wind also and looking to upgrade them.
I like it. Thanks!
Thank you!!!
So these new[sic] style tents that no longer use a tent fly, are really not tents any more. They are tent flies only, with a nicely matched "bathtub floor" instead of a full tent under them, yes?
+Lyfan Deth it's a single walled tent, and the bathtub floor is attached to the fly, so it's all one.
So I test-drove my new tent last night in the rain (backyard); it held up well. BUT - what do you do with your wet raincoat and rainpants once you take them off to get into the tent? Do you hang them up somewhere, inside the tent? Or leave them in the vestibule? Other? Thanks.
I typically take one of my stuff sacks and turn it inside out and stuff it in there. In the morning i take it out and put it in my mesh pocket, unless its still raining and then turn the stuff sack back outside in. Hope that helps!
Brilliant! Thanks :-)@@FollowBigfoot
👍🤩
Well now that you've shown how it's done, seems obvious! LOL But I still can't handle the price without gasping for air. I really need to win the lottery....sigh.
Its a great tent if you are going on a thru-hike and can afford it. I can understand for the occasional weekend trip. I will be using the same Duplex whenever I get to do the PCT.
I just got a triplex for my 68th birthday. It hurts less when you can rationalize the purchase.
Will this work with Hexamids? It seems like it should, thanks!
Yep, sure will
Cool
desteak lol is that like desausage or deporkchop lol excellent vid bud
+lgwjr white 😉
Christ I’d never pitch it like this unless there was zero wind. Looks about ready for take off
How would you pitch it?
Follow Bigfoot much lower to the ground. If you pitched it like that anywhere in the U.K. it would be flying
Pitching starts at 2:28.
How do you pack away the tent?
I will do a short video on that. I should have just put it in with this video but I wanted to keep it under 10 min. I have had a few ask so I think it will be good to show. Thanks
Bigfoot…WHERE ARE YOU? 😔🥺
Great video, but camo and yellow guy lines don't match :-)
Very useful video thanks. If you were to buy 4 of the 75cent lineloc V with loop from zpacks and hook the loop ribbon on the stake end, you could adjust your guylines. Not that this detracts from this setup technique, I use it, but it might be nice to be able to adjust if you want. zpacks.com/products/lineloc-v-with-loop
4 minutes. dang.
My duplex came in tonight and went right to this vid!
