Changing Preamp Tubes: Does it really change the tone?

- In this video I swap the stock tubes in my Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier. I was curious if changing the preamp tubes would make any noticeable difference in tone to my ears, or if this was simply more hype. Well spoiler alert, the difference is subtle but very noticeable.
I removed the stock 12AX7s and replaced them with the JJ tubes in this order.
V1: JJ E83CC
V2: JJ ECC83MG
V3: JJ ECC83MG
V4: JJ ECC83S
V5: JJ ECC803S
After the tube change it sounds more smooth and more clear. Warmer more flowering. Thanks for the demo
I was trying to say that in the Dual Rec and the Mark V, the JJ 6CA7 sounds great. Much tighter than the 6L6, with better mids. Good video.
The old pre’s are sloppy on the transient attack and fuzzy in the mids. The JJ’s, that combo you’re using, especially the Frame Grid for V1 sound HEAPS TIGHTER and has way more articulation on the pick attack, and the mids are heaps more growly! And you have more dynamics in your sound. Back off your gain a notch or two and you will increase the aggression like a Thrash Metal attack
Hello, As far as I hear from your clip I like the sound of JJ ECC83 MG the most. from Thailand🇹🇭🙏🙂
cool comparison, I did hear some difference and it is subtle, jj's were a little smoother to my ear. thanks for sharing!
Hey thank you! I just got a Mak V and it has stock tubes. I am thinking of ordering from Eurotubes, JJ ECC83s and the 6CA7 power tubes.
I have JJs in other amps with good results. Thanks for posting. If you haven't, try the JJ power tubes as they warm up the bias if you get a hotter grade. I love the 6CA7 tubes too.
Good stuff.
Change the power tubes, then you will be on the right track!
I just got my power tubes changed on my blackstar club 40 kentucky special.
Had my tech do it, I checked them after I played for a while since the tube was rated a lik high but he was still able to bias them. But I noticed only one of my pre amp tubes was lit up after I was using my amp.
Is that normal? Shouldn’t both pre amp tubes be lit up ? I did only use one channel which was the first gain stage but I was always under the impression both tubes in the pre amp, or all tubes in a pre amp section as well as the power tubes should all be lit up?
Honestly no idea. I don't do power tube swaps unless the amp has external bias points and i can test and bias the amp. I would take the amp to a professional, i am a hobbiest at best.
hi. if you are after better tone try some nos preamp tubes ,jj's have no air. the dual will work great with a mullard i61 at v1
I havent even watched this whole video yet, but the answer to the premise is ABSOLUTELY YES - 100% - Not only preamp tubes but power tubes can transform your amp from blah to a one of a kind fire-breathing monster!
my friend, in your opinion, in v1, e83cc sounds better tham ecc83? thanks!
I think so!
Damn dude, worse sounding amp ever!
My Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier volume started going in and out..(rolling)I heard it has to do with the preamp tubes...mainly the one farthest to the right.Ever heard if this...and is it bad to continue playing your amp like this?
If volume is cutting in an out on a recto... replace the v1 tube ASAP. My roadster ate V1 tubes like CRAZY. If this persists take this to an amp tech right away.
@@itsanthonybest I did this and man what a difference.Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier kicking some serious ass again. Thanks for the help man✌
Why not using the CLEAN TONE?
Yes, it does.
