I see a lot of guitars out there. If you are going to get to know an instrument, you need to spend time with it. I pull out one guitar in the morning and spend the day, or two, with it. Repeat each day with a different guitar. So, there's always one available and the rest are safe. That started, for me, back in the fifties (when I only had one) and it's how I stay creative and involved with every one of my current collection. Thanks for not taking 20 minutes to get several good points across.

You are sure correct, particularly about playing with other players. Before the lockdown, I found a few players and we got together weekly and were really getting some fun sounds. after the lockdown, a couple of them unfortunately had strokes and another moved 3:32 out of town. At 81, I was the oldest of the group. Fortunately, I have enough solo stuff to keep me from getting bored.

Hey Don, I want to validate and reinforce everything you say in this video. On the point about keeping a guitar handy: for years I kept guitars in sacred protection from everything including my hands. That effectively held me paralyzed at the rookie level. I bought a pawnshop squire tele and had an expert set it up, all for a relatively minimal investment. I keep it close to my desk and I do have to have it serviced more often than if it was locked away, but having it out has helped me so much to grow. (I still have a couple of nicer guitars preserved in cases). Also, every time I play with people (and especially those who are better) my competency jumps. I had to subscribe to your channel.

@@humbleviewpoint I also have some nicer instruments that stay in cases. Thanks for your insight.

These are all great tips! All have been very helpful in my own guitar journey. I would just add to your point about playing live with other musicians, that joining (or forming) a band can force you to learn and practice more than you otherwise might since you have to show up to rehearsal and know the music (or risk letting your band mates down). It can also force you to learn some songs that you never would have chosen yourself, but because one of your bandmates really wants to play it, ya gotta learn it, and this can stretch your capabilities in new directions. And the bonus part of being in a band is it can also be a ton of fun!

I play out if I have, and do, at assisted living places, appreciate it. Graduate to keys, so no need for a bass or guitar, but you have to sing to be the whole band, like me. No more, stress over slinky, or not, strat, or not, pedals or not, you know the drill.

Bad advice leaving guitars on a stand. With changes in temperature and humidity, especially in the winter, it can do damage to the wood and steel. Ask any professional and they will tell you to either leave the guitar in a humidity controlled environment (45-50%) or leave it in the case.

What if my guitar on a stand is in a humidity controlled environment?

@@chetpogostin34 I do it all the time and have never had any issues with solid body electrics. Cases may be the way to go for some who are worried about humidity levels.

Number three is the best tip and one I have been using for some time now (works in any endeavor as well) - playing with someone that pays better, or even someone that plays differently than you do will really open you up as a player.
