About how many miles do glow plugs typically last? I’ve got the same motor, and it runs great when warm but when cold it’s about 15 miles before it’s running smooth. Mine is bulletproof with 127k miles.
Glow plugs last around 100-200k typically. They don't really "wear out" Glow plugs are really only for cold start up and once the engine lights off, it only uses them to reduce any unburned fuel that would cause white smoke. It sounds like you actually have sludged injectors and need to replace those.
When the harness comes out easy it’s a easy job but latley the last dozen or so I done have been so so rusty and harness oil soaked from the shot lower valve cover I’ve had to cut the plugs harness drill thick screw in grommet and pry on that or rap some cable on it and yank em out Duramax glow plugs are way easier. Takes a 7mm 12 mm and a few other small sockets to take out inner fender liner
I agree, they're getting harder and harder to remove. I'm still having the best luck with PB blaster and pushing in/pulling out several times to work the penetrating fluid in until they release. Reassemble with silicone spray is working the best as well.
@@fordtechchris I wish I could show u a clip of this last one I did each one came apart in pieces had to use tweezers to remove the lower half of the harness tube on glow plug 1
Nice video. I recently had an issue removing the glow plug harness boot off my 2007 F350 DRW/Lariat 6.0l. The drivers side glow plugs, the first plug closest to the front bumper, the glow plug boot actually broke and I was using the special tool for glow plug boot removal on the 6.0liter. Any suggestions on how to remove the remains of the broken boot?
I've never needed it on the 6.0 Powerstroke and I've been replacing glow plugs in those for 20 years. But it's a necessity on the 6.6 Duramax, so I do know it won't hurt to use it.
Reason being the glow plugs live in engine oil on the Ford where the Duramax they are external and suscectable to rust and other environmental contaminants
@@fordtechchris That makes sense. Thanks for the reply. Also... do you feel it's necessary to pull the valve cover to prevent any trash getting into the oil pan through the drain back holes. If so, that takes the process to a whole new level of difficulty. And while I'm talking trash, is there any risk of gunk going into the motor through the Glow Plug holes?
@@Bullitt5094 no, it's not necessary to pull the valve covers. You can get an air nozzle and blow out the trash before you pull the harness. And even flush it with brake cleaner if you want. Some guys pull the valve covers just to pry the harness out from inside if they're super stuck. But honestly you have the same risk of dropping dirt in from the top edge of the valve cover gasket as the glow plug harness. Take your time and be clean and use silicone spray or PB blaster and the harness will come out easy with my technique in the video. Good luck👍🏻
@@Bullitt5094 and you'll only get a little dribble of motor oil going in to the cylinder through the glow plug hole. So expect to make a little smoke on startup after service. No big deal though.
There is really no easy way. The tool sucks unless the harness is in decent shape. The wire trick is better than the tool. If you get in a pickle just remove the valve cover and injectors . Don't waste your time trying to drill the broken harness.

The relaxing chill vibe literally made this job feel easier 10/10 video
I have 2004, and everyone should use the tool, it's cheap, and a new harness, I broke all my harness plugs. Nice video, thanks
The tool is great.
You make it look easy to do. Thanks for the great video.
He is right though the wheel well liner is by far the biggest PITA

Why would anyone change one per year? Change them all when the first one goes bad and you are good for another 10 years.
👏👏👏👏👏👏 great video

2 weeks too late. Drywall screw ran down into the broken boot then pry out using the screw.

Do you recommend a small amount of anti-seize on the Glow Plug threads before installing them?

Keep in mind... I've only been doing it for 18 years... ;-)
Can this cause a problem with the injectors
Glow plugs typically won't, that's usually the FICM or just plain worn out
Isn't the cylinder numbers on the driver side....5678?
No, international engines (6.0, 6.4, 7.3) are 1357 passenger side and 2468 driver side.
