My 13 year old chihuahua developed vestibular disease last year. It was scary at first because we didn't know what it was. She had symptoms for roughly 5 weeks but thankfully she no longer walks with a tilt or rolls her eyes. Sometimes she loses balance but I am so happy that she has managed to overcome it. She's a strong little girl.
My dog developed vestibular disease from an untreated ear infection, one of her ears was full of ear wax and slightly red. Vet treated with some injections and she got better within weeks. I hope this comment gives hope to someone worried about their dog with the same problem xx

Thank you for this! My PomChi was diagnosed a week ago. He is trying to move his legs and making noises again. But he is unable to stand or walk. I just wish i could help him more, but I'm doing the best that I can and hopefully he will walk soon.

@@GeminiBabii08 Yes, I have a few tips for you... I noticed that my dog was sensitive to sunlight, it would trigger her symptoms at times. Maybe keep him/her in the shade for a period of time to avoid disorientation. Another good trick is to add water to his/her food to stay hydrated. Have you checked with your vet if the ears are not infected? If so, this needs treatment.
Symptoms might get worse before it gets better, just be calm and give your dog time to recover. As long as he/she is eating and drinking, there is no need to worry.
Please let me know how your dog is and I am happy to chat whenever. Much love x

@@loucasanastasiouyes. It is dog measles, so all of the same things you would do for a human child with measles, like keeping them out of sunlight.

My dog went to the vet 3 times before I demanded that he looked in the ear-tube-it was full of a green, nasty bacterial infection! I had to use oil to get the plug of wax out, so they could see that it was infected!!
Now he’s off balance and stumbling around but they keep saying “he’s old and weak from back problems”
I said I think it’s vestibular, but he’s not vomiting and his eyes aren’t twitching so they don’t want to listen to me.
      I can’t afford a neurology vet. 😢

My 12 year old shepherd mix just had this happen 2 days ago. I rushed him to the emergency vet, then took him to our regular vet. It's terrifying! I thought it was over. I have a harness with a handle and a belly panel (thank you Ruff Wear!) That really helps getting him up. He has several meds to support him through this. I couldn't get him to eat, so I cooked a plain chicken breast. He still wouldn't so I smeared a little peanut butter on each piece and he ate it all! Slowly, one piece at a time. Fingers crossed he comes out of this ok! I'm totally dedicated to being his Service Human ❤

if your dog won't move get them up on its feet. spread it's legs out for balance, then hold it till it is able to balance it self, do that every hour or so. then hold them and start to get them moving. eventually they will be able to walk but you may need to prop them up. my dog went from not moving at all looking like it was about to die. we took her to be put down and the vet told me to give it a week. I'm extremely glad I did because she is not going outside by her self, walking around the house, there is improvement. if your dog won't eat get ENTICE from your vet, shit is like a miricle dog wouldn't eat one bite but when I gave it to her she ate 2 bowls of food.

    Good advice.
FWIW: DON'T be lulled into a sense of security when your vet says that most dogs recover from vestibular disease / syndrome.
Most dogs do recover but if the underlying cause of the vestibular disase / syndrome is CENTRAL (brain related) the outcome is likely to be sad. Be prepared as this can unfold very quickly - four days in the case of our beloved 13yo wirehaired dachshund Archibald. One minute you are waiting out this very distressing / debilitating illness with few treatments beyond offering comfort and hoping for a recovery and suddenly you realise that there's no turning back. Heartbreaking.
ALSO - when caring for your dog during this period be sure that they do NOT aspirate (inhale) food as this may harm them more than the vestibular disease. Goodluck everyone - love them while you have them and do everything you can to give your dog time to recover. Let's hope that vet science can develop a treatment for this common condition.

I'm so sorry for your loss :(, sadly it's really hard to know which kind it is, at least here MRIs are not only expensive but sometimes not worth to make the dog to go through that at an old age.
Currently going through it with my 14 yo mutt. She got her blood test, everything is fine especially considering her age, she walks, no more eye movement and her head seems to be coming back to place (currently six days has passed). Her issue is vomiting, she's hungry and thirsty, can get up to drink but I try to offer her to drink and food every hour or so, she's on antivomiting meds for three days now and tomorrow we are going to skip it and see if her digestive system is able to keep and process the food I'm giving her.
It's a very stressing situation but I try to be calm for her, she has improved but yet it's slow and I don't want to say victory yet, all i can do is support her the best way I can.
I'm pretty sure your doggo was beloved and in these situations is the best we can hold to. Thank you for sharing your experience

We're going on 6 months with this disease. It's a roller coaster ride. Some days she's horrible with the balance, and other times she's walking upright. I've treated her for ear infections, and took her to a neurologist. From there I went to a dog dermatologist because I learned that they treat ear infections. No real help in either place. Pushing for ct scan or MRI. Thousands of dollars. Decided to treat symptoms and go back to the regular vet. Eating and drinking are not affected. I found that encouraging movement is the best approach. Getting her on her feet and trying to stabilize her with her harness works. She walks great on concrete and asphalt. On tile or hardwood floors horribly. She also requires TLC. Anxiety is like poison and makes things worse. So this is where we're at. I'm praying for some encouraging progress. Open to any suggestions.

My 17 year old shih tzu has vestibular disease and was getting dizzy while dipping his head down to drink at his water bowl. He also couldn’t tell quite where the bowl was, so often he would step into it by mistake. So I took an identical bowl, about 4 inches high, and turned it upside down, then put the second bowl right side up on top of the first bowl. Now he can drink to his heart’s content since he doesn’t have to lower his head to drink. I still do have to watch him while he’s drinking, though, because once he’s finished his drink he has a tricky time backing away from the bowl and/or walking around it. Thanks for all your suggestions; I’ll be watching this video again!

I got my 15yo spaniel to drink water by starting with chicken broth. Adding water until it was simply water after a few days. Also, plain scrambled eggs with warm white rice enticed her to begin eating again. The vet prescribed anti-nausea medication for wobbly days.

Caring for a dog going through this. Some tips. Raise water bowls and food to chin level. A dog who is dizzy can’t easily lowering his head without falling. Washroom- make sure it is on a flat surface that is not big. Section off a 6 x 6 area. Allow at least twice the normal time it would take them to go to the bathroom bring a chair and relax while they take their time. Feed with a syringe if necessary if dizziness prevents them from eating. Switch to solids once they get better. It’s all about ergonomics and safety.

My Rudy developed it secondary to metronidazole toxicity. He was given to high of a dose by the vet. We took him to Cornell university veterinary school companion animal hospital for neurological evaluation. They gave him 3 day course of diazepam. It's been 19 days since its onset. Rudy has become more alert since he finished the diazepam. My home has hard wood floors
Through out. Only my dining room has an area rug.I have kept him very clean. Using a product named Water Wipes meant for newborns. I put corn starch around his area..Hes on fleece blankets, set on wee wee pads on my bed as he has always slept with me. I ve purchased him doggie diapers which wicks away wetness overnight. I spend considerable time with him daily. He has 2 doggie sisters for company.

We are using Happy Traveler. It has ingredients for both calming & antibiotics nausea. It also doesn't react with the antibiotics the vet prescribed. I made bland food with extra lean ground beef & rice. At first we fed it in small amounts & waited for about 45 minutes before giving him more. He had his meals in 3 stages. This way & all the food stayed down. He's doing well enough now to be fed the full amount at once. We're hoping for a full recovery as we can see progress being made daily. We, like everyone else, were very scared at first when he couldn't walk without stumbling & was so disoriented. I'm thankful that good information was easy to find.

My old girl Dilly, is 14 in January, just came over to where I was sitting and unusually pushed her way into the chair behind me trying to get to me. I knelt down and she put her head in my lap, panting heavily, mouth open, eyes semi shut and clearly distressed. She sat like that for 5 minutes or so, then looked like she wanted to move. We offered her water which she had 3 little drinks of, and then tried to turn around to go back to get spot. Since then, she's staggered back and forth between her 2 favourite spots, drink more water, eaten 2 digestive biscuits and a Joint Stick in small pieces, and just now managed a wobbly walk out for a wee. Still very wobbly. Sounds very much like what you describe here. How we go forward remains to be seen. But thanks for your video, as it helps me understand what's going on. She's been through alot in her life, and I've just lost my husband, Dilly's original owner, so this is another blow! 😭

We are on day 4 after diagnoses. Samba is almost 13 on many meds as it is because of TPLO surgeries, arthritis in hips and knees, GI problems/liver problems. We have done all you said without even listening to your video because I took care for her after TPLO for 8 weeks. Day 1 I thought that was a stroke and we need to say goodbye. Immediate trip to vet (of 25 year). Diagnosis done, liver checked again to make sure it is not getting worse, anti nausea shot and meds for the next 4 days, had some water. Stopped other meds because no food no meds. Day 2, a lot of water, caned food, smelly treats. She started to get up on her own, so lead, harness pee outside, more food. Day 3 hand fed about 1/2 of what she normally eats, she was visibly in pain and in discomfort, had very soft stool (but still outside with assist). Talk to vet resumed her normal meds, hand feeding, standing up on her own, walking on lead and with harness inside and outside. Day 4 so much improvement. one day at the time.

Our 13 year old Aussie was hit with Vestibular Syndrome. It started at 1:45am, he jumped up and immediately thru up. He then became completely unstable, and his eyes did the right to left movement. I thought he was having a stroke and I was going to lose him... I contacted an emergency vet by phone who identified it. I asked about Prednisone and she said it cannot hurt, 25mg was given twice over 8 hours...I laid him on a heavily padded pet bed, and laid with him. In the morning I got Dramamine, and he got half a dose every 6 hrs. I also bought Infant No Flavor Pedialyte Water to help him from being dehydrated. I know they say be cautious of sodium, but the electrolytes was major importance. He did not want to eat anything the 1st 2 days. BUT, he would lick PEANUT BUTTER. 2 ingredient peanut butter, and I found a peanut butter flavored calming paste so he could rest. Day 2.5 he was eating peanut butter and drinking Pedialyte a lot. He wanted to get up, we had a full chest harness and I used a towel to help his backend until the full harness we ordered arrived. He was very unstable but very determined. He urinated freely and with good quantity. Day 2.85 he ate his first bits of white meat chicken breast finely chopped with well cooked sweet potato. We're a month and 2 weeks later he still eats with his regular dog food. At day 4 he was trying to walk by himself, but I used the full harness for 9 days...At day 6 his eyes had almost stopped motion. He was still fairly weak in the back end,,but would not be stopped. Day 15 he was still in the harness, but off the strap on on his own...He has about 5-7degrees of head tilt, mostly when he is tired. So he is really doing well, about 90-95% recovery. He's about 90% stable on his feet. I guess the odds of probability is he will have additional attacks, but we will be prepared. And as long as he doesn't give up, I will lay on the floor with him, I will give him what ever he needs, wants,,,,He is the absolute LOVE OF MY LIFE....

My dog is only 7 years old and he is going through this right now :( Yesterday after I walked into my home and seen him get excited and he collapsed 5 times in front of me. At first I thought it was because my woods floors were slippery but then I realized something was wrong when I took him outside and he seemed confused and not interested in walking. Took him to my local vet at petsmart immediately. Vet said he was okay and stable and it looks like it might have been a mini seizure. He told me to monitor him and that the "leaning would go away." Just to come home later and see him try to get up and fall to the side. He was walking around in circles, collapsed a few times again, threw up, and walking to the side. Ended up taking him to the 24hr hospital that same night. Doctor told us it was Perpheral Vestibular disease and that both of his ears are inflamed horizontally. They cleaned his ears and sent us home with motion sickness medication Meclizine and Cerenia. They told me to see if he gets better in 5/6 days and if not they would have to refer me to a neurologist to see if its central vestibular disease. I'm so scared for my baby. How can I tell if it's Central or just peripheral? Can the ear infections cause it to be central?

We are not going very far, but suddenly she will stop, refuse to go back or forwards, then we will have to get her back home (she is big!). Her next move is to lie down, wherever she is! This is very hard to manage if I am on my own with her.

I know because I had a few episodes of it but it only lasted for maybe a minute. They looked in her ears and said it didn't look like she had any kind of infection. Her vitals are all good her blood work is good. Today is day one and the vet gave me some medication for dizziness and also in case she does have an infection of her ears my vet told me it doesn't look good this of course broke me up .I'm hoping for the best and hoping a couple of days I can say that she is up and around. Thanks for the video. I adopted a dog about 15 months ago from a kill shelter in Texas (I live in VA). When he arrived, he had horrible dental issues and was twice as old as they claimed he was. But my vet said he was in perfect health otherwise. Fast forward to yesterday. I had taken him out the night before and noticed he had a leg tremor. Nothing really crazy... I figured he was cold. So I brought him inside. Hours earlier, he had climbed on top of our patio table and was sitting there for the first time. I had laughed because he hadn't done it before but had seen our other, younger dog do it often. He was a perfectly healthy dog, just old.
Yesterday morning, I woke up and he was laying in bed. I called for him to come with me, and he got up and immediately fell. I laughed for a second, then realized the next second something wasn't right. I immediately put him on the floor and watched my poor boy struggle to stand upright. I burst into tears and began calling for a vet that was open who could help.
I found a great vet with the help of my local animal welfare league. They diagnosed him with this vestibular syndrome thing and gave me an antibiotic and a treatment I have to give him every day for the next week. They also gave him prednisone. They said he hadn't injured his leg and didn't have any osteoarthritis or anything like that. They took blood, and we are waiting to see what the test results are. In the meantime, I have him back at home and this is day 1. I am scared beyond belief, but I am at home self-isolating because of COVID-19, so I can at least be here to take care of him. He sleeps soundly, but when he's awake, he wants to walk around. I have put up as many things as I can to cushion his falls and keep him on carpet (I have hardwood floors). Just now, he was awake and started shaking all over and couldn't stop. I got him back on his dog bed next to me and scratched his belly, which he loves. That calmed him down and stopped the shaking and he went to sleep. When he was awake, he tried to walk the stairs, but he could only get about 3 steps before he froze. He walked a little outside and then just wanted to lay in the sun, so I let him do that. I will feed him by hand, which he seems to like. I will get him back outside in an hour while it's still sunny and get him to sit in the sun. He seems to be able to walk on his own, but it's very wobbly. He tilts his head to the side, and I can see him really trying to get himself steady. I'm heartbroken.
Anyway, I just wanted to share this and thank you for the video. This was very enlightening, and it's good to know as long as his blood tests come back not showing some kind of cancer or tumor, he'll be ok. It's shocking how healthy and happy he was 24 hours ago, and literally overnight, in ten short hours, he went from healthy and climbing on our patio tables being the funny dog I've grown to love, to this sick, dizzy dog who's struggling so hard to try and understand what's going on and trying so hard to figure out why his world has gone dizzy topsy turvey

@@OurPetsHealth I watched the other videos. I read through a lot of responses. I feel so much better. I have Prince following me around, even when he was dizzy and hardly walking. I was so afraid. But this morning, he insisted on climbing the stairs (carpeted) all by himself. I tried to pick him up, but he insisted, so I just walked behind him. Then he walked around outside all by himself and laid down when he got tired on a nice grassy area. Later on, I took him outside for another walk. He is definitely walking better. He went all the way upstairs, and then he walked downstairs by himself too- though I walked in front of him backwards in case he fell. He's a real fighter- doesn't want to be carried and wants to do it all on his own. I will continue giving him his meds until they run out and monitoring him to make sure we are past this. My girl was diagnosed this syndrome. Doc said she would improve. It seems she is good one day and then later in the day or next day she doesn’t look better. It looks like she’s going backwards. This has been going on for a week. I think I need to be patient with her recovery, but it’s so scary, and makes me wonder if it’s something else. She is eating and drinking, letting me know when she has to go out. The issue I see is, she has always slept on my bed. Usually at the foot. But the getting up and down seems very difficult. Am I hurting her doing the up and down for her? Some articles say to have her do it, but it’s scary to watch. My bed is very high and not a lot room for her to jump off without possibly getting hurt. Thanks for this video at least I’m learning every time I read or see a new thought. Thanks again

2.5 months ago, my 10lb, old dog (not sure how old, as he was a rescue, but the vet guesses 16) had what I thought was a stroke. Walking in circles, wobbly, bumping into the wall, falling, afraid look in his face. But after about 2 hours he seemed fine. 2 hours ago it happened again but a bit different. Walking funny - frong legs criss crossing, then he stopped and was shaking and his hind legs caved. He went right to sleep once he calmed. He's been eating less the last couple months and moves a lot more slowly. Won't go up or down the big staircase anylonger. But I thought that was due to arthritis so I put him on meds for that (hasn't seemed to help mobility). He's so very old, I just don't know if it's worth the testing and stress he would go through with vet visits and tests. I can't go into the vet office with him due to Covid-19 safety restrictions so it would terrify him. How do I know if he's had 2 strokes, or if it's Vestibular Disease? Should I take him to the vet either way, or love him and make him comfortable? He seems very peaceful and calm as he's resting in his bed or in my arms. I don't want to extend his life if it's not quality, I just want him to be comfortable and know he's safe and loved. This is my first dog, so I'm new to these types of decisions. Thank you for any advice you can offer.

Vestibular disease doesn't normally resolve that quickly so I'd be suspicious something else was going on. It can be tricky to reach a diagnosis in these cases but it often involves at least a blood test to rule out some other more common problems. Hi , our Pomeranian just turned 12 and was running through a garden bed and received a knee injury . After seeing the vet and putting him on pain meds along with anti inflammatories he started to exhibit the head roll and walking in circles . Next came screaming and scooting backwards . Back to the vet , bloods done ,Nil results, took him off all meds , more screaming, back to vet , again more bloods , still head lulling to side ,collapsing! This was so distressing for all of us . After CT scan , the vet still had no answers . My wife found this diagnosis online , never officially diagnosed! Our poor boy after 2 months now has just the head roll down to mornings and the occasional evening . It’s such a debilitating problem for him but at least now he has his normal happy self back .
The screaming and crying is horrendous, brought us both to tears and we even contemplated his end of life due to no vet diagnosis! How many people end their dogs lives due to this ?
We went to 3 different vets and not one could diagnose him !

Our 13 year old sprocker was diagnosed 1 week ago, she fell off the bed in the middle of the night, her eyes were flicking from side to side and she kept losing her balance and going round in circles, it was heartbreaking to see the look of fear in her eyes,
The first few days were horrendous because we didn't know how it was affecting her, she wouldn't eat or drink though she vomited liquid.and didn't seem to understand what food and water was, we syringed water into her mouth and hand fed her tasty food like tuna and vegetables, we let her sleep but encouraged her to keep getting up and gave her round the clock cuddles. she is a lot better now but has a distinct head tilt and a wobble and won't leave our sight, but her 'spark' has come back and she recognises her familiar surroundings again.

After 3 days we saw the beginning of improvement in that her eye movement slowed down dramatically and she wasn't rolling when she got up. We had to line our house in carpets for her to feel ok trying to get around, and we carried her outside and back. We used a towel then a webbed ruffwear harness to give her the feeling of stability and held it tight upright so she could try to walk. I had to hand feed little chicken pieces and syringe water into her for the first full week and keep handfeeding chicken/hot dogs for another week. Using CBD to calm/put to sleep.. but then it starts again. Can't sit up and turns hard to the left - almost like trying to chase his tail and when on his side arches his neck backwards. Not eating or drinking cause can't sit up, so using a syringe to provide water and a mixed protein solution. Concerned when he hadn't defacated in 4 days but finally went on the puppy pad last night in a laying down position. The extreme left turn is difficult to look at as it appears his spine is hurting - but maybe it is Vestibular?

This is not likely to be typical old dog vestibular disease and to be honest you really should be getting him checked over by your vet as soon as possible

Our 11 year old Pug has been suffering with this for the first time ,for several hours now. We got a vet appt. for her tomorrow and are going to try to figure this out. Her eyes looked like she was watching a tennis match and she has trouble walking. She is eating just fine though. Thank you very much for this video. It is so informative. Lots of love from Texas!❤️

Hi my 12 year old cocker spaniel developed symptoms of this 3 weeks ago, he was admitted to the hospital for an over night stay and made a full recovery with 2weeks. Today it has come back exactly the same, I am unsure what is best to do for him? He is still eating drinking and walking although wobbly and unsteady

dogs can definitely have multiple episodes of this disease unfortunately. Hopefully recovery will be just as complete as last time. Worth checking in with your vet to let them know and if he is not improving then it could be that more diagnostic testing should be done as there are other diseases that can cause similar looking symptoms

Did anyone here use a chewable flea med on their dog prior to onset?
And fyi. Hawthorn berry and leaf tea can be added to daily drinking water to help with this longterm

Hello, my 8 year old pomeranian developed a head tilt earlier this morning and he had been tilting his head to the right continously through out the day. I took him to an emergency pet clinic and informed the vet of the condition he was in. The Vet checked him and stated that he was perfectly fine and in good health, showing no symptoms of any ear infection. Vet also said that he did not display any head tilt, but when I started to walk him around the parking lot he continued to do the head tilt again as if something was really bothering him. Once I brought him home he seemed a bit off balance and eyes somewhat disoriented. My sister noticed he had difficulty drinking water because of his head tilt and then he suddenly fell on to his side. Are these signs of Vestibular disease?

It could be but impossible to say without being seen. You might want to take a video so you can show the vet what's going on

Can a dog have vestibular disease without nystagmus "eye movement/twitching"? My dog exhibit all signs of vestibular disease, but she does not have the eye movement.

the nystagmus can sometimes only last for a very short period of time and so go unnoticed

It can be, so long as the general trend is improving. Worth keeping in touch with your vet though if he's not improving or getting a lot worse again

Hi Doc! My 2 year old pomeranian fell from height and really fell bad. She was attended by her vet but didn't show any pain but after a day, she seems disoriented and I thought she lost her senses and started circling to her left. She also stumble. Now, it's her 5th day since the injury and she seems weak but she's eating and drinking. Will she recover? And is she considered one with vestibular?

signs like this because of trauma are very different to a dog suffering from idiopathic old dog vestibular disease. With a lot of traumatic injuries there is not much more we can do other than support our pets by keeping them fed, watered and toileting them and hope that they recover by giving them time. If you have not seen your vet since she's started doing these things then it could be worth getting her checked over again to make sure nothing else can be done.

Keep in close touch with your vet so you know what the plan is both if the medication does and doesn’t work. Fingers crossed he’s back to normal very soon

I would be more suspicious there is an underlying cause of their problem to be found that may (or may not) be treatable. Have a chat to your vet
