I had my 14 year old Belgian sheepdog put down a few years ago. Otherwise healthy he would constantly bang his head on the floor before laying down. His last episode was horrific and lasted for more than a day, my vet's office was closed for a holiday. Tough decision to make but my boy left me with many great memories, I will always miss you my beautiful Claude.

We've recently had issues with what our vet stated may be vestibular disease in our Miniature Schnauzer. Desperate to help her with her inability to walk, eat, or drink normally, we read about trying Cayenne Pepper, which has proven to be successful, restoring her balance when used. It's usually only needed once a day. When her symptoms kick in, I wet the first digit of my index finger, dip it in Cayenne Pepper, shake off the excess, then put it in her mouth & rub it on her gums & tongue. I'm careful not to get it on her nose or in her eyes, because it's irritating. It has made such a difference for the past few days and is allowing her to recover. My understanding is that the Cayenne Pepper is a vasodilator that helps with blood flow, providing some relief from the symptoms. Her appetite kicks in when she starts feeling better & we are careful to feed her only a bit. Naturally, the hydration is more important for now. If this helps anyone out there get through this, it's worth sharing. ❤

My German Shepherd was diagnosed with this disease. That was over 6 months ago. He has gotten so bad that he poops and pees on himself. He's eating drinking water with me helping him by sitting and holding him up. He's 15 years now and I won't take him to put him down. I'm really having a hard time from him being a very energetic, happy and I've had had him since he cc was a 3 or 4 months. I cry alot and hate seeing him like this. I feed hi and bath him and he's still here for now. I love him so much, but know I have to let him go. It's heartbreaking. Just wanted to speak of this and see if anyone understands 😢😢😢

My 14 yo mongrel dog got this last week. He lost his balance, and his eyes darted. He wont eat drink and move. We go to the vet next day and got meds for his dizziness and vitamin. His eyes stopped darting on the 4th day, and now he’s getting better and better, just a little wobbly and his head still a little bit tilt to the left.

This happened to our 14 year old maltipoo. We were worried she had a stroke. Luckily the vet knew what was wrong without performing tests. Gave her some fluids since she hadn’t been eating or drinking and a steroid and had me get anti nausea meds at the store. She is already showing a lot of improvement a day later.

I hate to give this info but I had a cavachon that was about 8 and she had a bought of it. Scared me to death, I raced her to the vet and they gave her meds to stop her from vomiting due to her eyes spinning around some like vertigo. She got better but she kept having episodes and ultimately had to be put down. She went from completely healthy to dying in just a few months. Best of luck.

My 11yo collie boy is 8 days into vestibular hell. He hasn’t gotten better. We are going for an MRI next week. Very tiring. We had a beautiful collie boy recently pass away. He was disabled so we have a wheelchair, stretcher and special wagon for bathing. We are prepared. We seem to be blessed with dogs with special needs and terminal diseases.

Thanks for the advice but I’m not gonna lie it’s more advice than I just got from the vet. I had to save up money for a blood test for $208 😂 that took like 10 mins… smfh and she said my dog seemed normal lmao. I even showed videos.
Thinks it could be stress or anxiety even though it looks like my poor baby is sometimes having mini strokes
I pray I hurry and get my funds in complete order cuz this is ridiculous. The vet system loves taking our money when we only have them to go to. What a waste.
& all she recommended was a stress relaxing drug. But I hope it helps cuz I hope it isn’t what’s going on in this video

When talking about the intensive and very expensive testing involved in determining cause and treatment for this condition, especially in a dog who is beyond average lifespan for her breed, I wonder if the kindest choice is to end the suffering and help the older dog die in peace and dignity. That was the choice I made.

I just adopted a dog that was a breeder fail (returned to the breeder), for having this issue. He is now 6 months old, and has had this since birth. Wobbliness, astagnis, easily loses balance, rolls over without meaning to, and is super sensitive to certain noises that most dogs don't mind. He's been cleared by a regular vet, but we are still unsure what is causing this. His symptoms are constant unless he's being physically held, or is asleep.

Took him to 2nd vet 5 days later and that vet doesn’t think it’s his ears and recommended a neurologist. We have appt there on 9/11. Meanwhile he on antibiotic, pain med and meds for motion sickness. He is eating and drinking. Just walks with the head tilt, little unsteady on his feet sometimes, stiffins up and rolls body to side when you go to pick him up.

Our maltipoo had GME. Diagnosed after an MRI and spinal tap. Symptoms are similar and there are many dogs that have GME - the big question is WHY this is happening. Our dog lived 4 yesrs with it and died of hemolytic anemia - no doubt caused by the powerful immunosuppressive meds we had to give her.

Please explain what do you in the meantime during an episode like this? Keep them calm, strap them down, What? I know that the answer it’s take them to the vet but what one can’t right away or take them in the morning? This happened to me on New Year’s Day and all Vets were closed. I took my dog to the emergency and they just said she had a muscle spasm and sent me home with pain meds. What do you during the episode?

    • @SEVNeurology
      @SEVNeurology  4 місяці тому

You bring up a great reason that we often say “be evaluated by a veterinarian” - it sounds like after evaluation they were much more worried about neck pain than about a balance problem.
Advice for balance problems is very different than for pain. This is why it’s challenging for us to give a diagnosis over the internet and why being evaluated in person is so valuable.

Google “dog won’t eat.” There’s a plethora of tips online. I’ve had to syringe feed, finger feed, and buy copious amounts of different foods to find one she’ll eat bits of for 12 days now. Syringe feed bone broth (not the salty crappy kind) for nutrients and puréed chicken in broth and canned pumpkin. Try: boiled chicken, beef, canned foods, tripe, eggs, hot dogs, liquid supplements, baby food… And always a little puréed pumpkin with every meal for upset stomach from new foods. It’s been a 24/7 ordeal for me all day trying things till she’ll eat something or feeding through a syringe. Canned foods have been her favorite.
