    Been a member there since '74. Not the first time the Blue Dragon has been on the ballast. Had to rerail it one Members' Night with the E5. 12 inch to the foot model railroading at its' best. Enjoyed this much, thanks!

    Basically it’s model railroading IRL, your locomotive derails for no reason, and the solution is to give it power/pull it over a set of points with another locomotive so it can rerail itself with the points

      Rerailing frogs, fun to look at but not so fun to carry around and position.

    • @weekendrailroader
      @weekendrailroader 10 місяців тому +13

      Uh, no. Not at all. They used wooden blocks to ramp the derailed truck back up onto the rails. Using the points to try to rerail a locomotive would just result in you running through the switch, blowing up the guts of the switchstand or bending/breaking the throw rod, and the wheels would still be on the ground.
      Derailments don't happen for "no reason". Even on the scale model stuff, there's always a reason that the wheel left the rail. Might take some sleuthing to find out what caused it, but they don't "just happen."

      To be fair, you might be waiting a while on the hand of God coming down to pick it up and put it back on the rails.

      Try to get someone on a 3D printer service to do a shell. If any company makes a run they're going to be $400. Might as well look for brass at that price.

    I don't know if it had anything to do with it derailing but I remember riding with the DSS&A / Soo Line crews in the '70s and they loved the old Baldwins BUT they said with such a long overhang on the centercabs they could not couple an ore car directly to it as it would derail at the first curve. They always had at least one boxcar ahead of the ore cars. I love those old buggers too and the only ones I have ever seen in HO were brass way out of my $$$ range.

      @@MidWestRailFan-1z2eq it was either 1963 or 64, i had to ride my bike to school a couple miles from my house, and had to cross the IT just a few blocks from the school. One morning i had no choice but to wait for a train on its way to the yard on the east side of town (Springfield Illinois). As the train got on level ground past the 5th/6th street overpass, the engines and pretty much the whole train was rocking like crazy, very similar to the cars rocking in videos of the ELS in Michigan. The train had 3 GP7s, and a road-equipped SW1200 and if it had derailed, i woulda been squished like a bug on a windshield. (SPLAT!)

    Putting a derailment video at a museum on UA-cam doesn't help them grow for you to have more trains to shoot. Videos of major railroads don't hurt them too much but for museums trying to attract new visitors, it can hurt their ability for restoration and acquisition projects.

    • @akarinnnnnn
      @akarinnnnnn 10 місяців тому +4

      Anyone who is involved with or who supports restoration and acquisition projects at railroad museums isn't going to look down on anyone over a minor derailment like this and any railfan who happens by this video isn't either. General public visitors will probably never even see this video. If anything any attempts to take down or cover up videos of these kinds of minor derailments would do more harm to the museums reputation.
