But I like the structure a test can give, if the person taking it is smart enough to see the abilities and skills required. To be honest, it's fair to have to learn a lot of words, building a bit if vocab, and then use it to comprehend and "live" a language. I agree with you that a language is to be used as a whole, mostly because it's a complete new world. I use hsk mainly as a starting point, a list of basics from which to learn a language.
