I’d argue this is one of the police’s most under appreciated songs. Sting’s vocals, the passionate lyrics and simple yet powerful instrumental creates for an amazing track.
@@Peanutdenver He actually wrote it back in Newcastle when he was a teacher by day and played in a local band at night. It's about his first wife, Frances Tomelty.
Problem is the real meaning of these lyrics is they are the thoughts of a stranger 'Martin' played by Sting who is obsessed with a family's severely disabled teenager whom he rapes twice and she miraculously recovers. It could also be constured that maybe she is obsessed with him even.... watch the movie Brimstone and Treacle and decide. Sting has said he believes the character, Martin, is the Devil.
I am not ashamed to say that I still own the Brimstone and Treacle soundtrack on cassette!...This song is sexy, dark and haunting...even tantric...like an obsessive eternal love poem, the film stays with you for a long time too. =)
I agree. One of the better Police songs, and most ignored. Sting's voice seductive. The bass and guitar like the tolling of a bell. Hypnotic. When I was a teen, I used to lie in front of my parents old record player and play and replay this track.
The Police have always been my favorite band. And this song is one of my favorite Police Songs. I gotta say, everyone should know what it's like to be with someone that loves you this much, and you love this much in return.
A dark masterpiece and one of the greatest Police songs. Stewart is amazing on this and the bridge is classic Sting as is his upright bass. The Sting live version in the Bring on the Night movie is incredible with Omar Hakim drumming away, yet they chose a version with no drum solo for the album!
I have to go with this version by The Police. This song has always given me chills and is extremely haunting. I love the dark side of The Police. And yes, Stewart's drumming on the second half sounds incredible. Plus I dig the little yells and things the guys are doing at the end. Sound like pirates or something. Very cool stuff.
The live version of this song is fantastic. Great drumming. I don't know who he is but he's good. I always liked this song back in 1981 or whenever it was released. I bought the 12 inch vinyl the moment I heard it on the radio. WLIR 92.7 on Long Island it was. I still have it today. And it sounds great every time I hear it. 🤔😀😉🤣😆😃😁😂😅😄✌️👍👌🥁🎸🎸
its so easy for someone to miss all of the cool stuff that he does in this song from a drumming stand point bc it just blends in so well with everything else in the mix; really an underrated masterpiece from all ends.
First time I heard this song I was 8 years old. Parents rented the Bring on the Night VHS. Even that young, I was fascinated with this song, the tempo of it, how musically interesting it was.
Fucking stunning! Dark and sexy... no, sensual, menacing, pending ecstasy in the middle of the song then you get down to the business of getting to it. LOVE this song.
Not crazy at all. Yes they should.I grew up in the 80’s and my best friend at the time had everything on the police, even Andy’s photog book called Throb. Police were her favorite band. I’d go over her very expensive house and we’d listen to this record (yes record cuz I’m older now lol) and early police records. She would tell me things about the band members and we’d both dream about going to the UK. They had the life and lots of fame but yes, they should do another album. Absolutely
The first time I heard this song, I was in paradise (still am). This is seriously my favourite song on this entire planet. It brings up so many emotions I didn't even know existed. Along with Secret Journey. I freakin' love Sting
There is something about this song that is just hypnotising.. I don't know what it is but I when it comes on I have to stop everything just to listen and be in that moment. I just love it.
I used to sing/murmur this song to the love of my life, when she fell asleep next to me. She is still The One to me, but sadly she just broke up with me. I Burn For You, is my song for her. "You and I are lovers, the nighttime falls around our bed, in peace we sleep entwined and your love flows through me, though an ocean seems my head, I burn for you".... It's almost Shakesperian....
Just an incredible song. And if not for the stipulation that Andy and Stewart each have at least ONE song of their own on Ghost in the Machine and Synchronicity, I Burn For You very well could've and should've landed on one of those 2 albums (instead of "Mother", for example.) Thankfully it was included as part of the B & T Soundtrack and, of course, on Sting's solo "Bring on the Night" CD.
My favorite version of this song. Floated up from my deep consciousness from somewhere I can't remember, but I had to find this today. My eyes are flame. I burn. I burn.
Thank you for the excellent quality of this song-----I was an 80's kid who really liked The Police, I really liked this song. I think it was from the "Brimstome and Treacle" soundtrack that Sting acted in-----an odd, very British, sort of entertaining film. This is a great song regardless of the circumstances.
Sting has newer versions of this great song on Spotify, but they miss Stewart's great drumming. Why isn't this original version on Spotify? Coolth is a great word! They were the best band of their era... a supergroup indeed...
I remember buying that soundtrack LP just to get this one and the other two Police songs. IBFY was the only one that stood the test of time out of the three but what a great song it is!
Now that I have found you In her coolth of your evening smile The shade of your parasol And your love flows through me Though I drink at your pool I burn for you I burn for you You & I are lovers And nighttime falls around our bed In peace we sleep entwined And your love flows through me Though an ocean soothes me head I burn for you I burn for you Stars will fall from dark skies As ancient rocks are turning Quiet fills the room And your love flows through me Though I lie here so still I burn for you I burn for you
You can buy this movie on DVD through Amazon. I bought it recently. Sting is great in this movie. I don't think of these as Police songs. Sting wrote I Burn for You prior to Police.
Melissa Fleming Sounds like near the end they were singing the aeolian or natural relative minor key of F major, D natural minor instead of the common harmonic minor. I am a music education major at Muskingum University.
This song fits perfectly to the horror of the climatic scene of that very good film. Thanks for uploading. A great song written I think for his first wife.
Que bonita es esta canción ,mi favorita era every little thing she does is Magic pero después de escuchar esta se me a puesto los pelos de punta de lo buena que es.
i fell in love with this song when it came out... i went out and bought Brimstone & Treacle, even though i had no idea what the movie was and haven't seen it even to this day....i don't like any other version of it as much as i do this, the original.... thank you so much for posting it on here....
+Simon Robeyns indeed. Bring On The Night, the Live Sting concert with the best JAZZ band a pop musician will EVER be able to get, buries all other versions of the songs. Bring On The Night included.
@jenirocksotb - I happened to tape the film on VHS years ago but I bought it from Amazon.co.uk. recently. It's one of those 'cult' movies so be careful when/if you purchase it - cos of DVD codes. Well worth buying. 1st class cast of actors too!
i'm certain now this was part of the the music for "Brimstone and Fire", a film based on Dennis Potters screenplay... that starred Sting and Denholm Elliot. Sting and Stewart Copeland had some cool and interesting forays into the world of film. I'm convinced that The Police track "Synchronicity 2" fits perfectly/lyrically with the tv special New Years Eve feature Sting starred in 1981 called "Artemis 81". In it, Sting plays an ethereal angel. So many of that song seems to relate to that films story, i wonder if it was ever considered for the films soundtrack, or was Sting /The Police inspired by his work on the film to make this song?

to have lived the profound emotion of this song at any point in one's life is a great gift.

This the most intensely dark romantic song I have ever heard. My all-time fav band since 1981

Dark af and Romantic af! Fuckn Sting man smh.
I remember sending the lyrics of this song to my future wife as a poem, still together 21 year later, I guess they worked pretty out pretty well.
Awesome!
Right on brother I would've taped it then sent her the cassette
Damn. Good job
Did you pretend you wrote it?!

I have the Vinyl album .
I played the hell out of that cassette. It also has Up the Junction by Squeeze, a really nice monolog by Sing and the Go-Gos
Nothing wrong with that. Interesting cult film. I watched it again last fall
I've got the same cassaette. ha Love it.
Andy's finest use of his Roland Guitar
I could listen to 2:35-4:51 on repeat all night. It's so cathartic it almost hurts.

Never have, never will.
When you’re at the start of a truly intense relationship and the force is incredible.
Got this one as a greeting from a special friend...
Greatest group EVER! Fell in love with them in 1978 and they've been my band ever since. How this was never released as a single I will never know...
Yes, a great missed opportunity from the management me thinks . Brilliant song .

beautiful song and awesome percussion arrangement, big ups to Stewart Copeland.

I especially love the power of the song at 1:25 along with the emphasis on bass at 1:43. Extremely intense...
Those are both shiver down the spine moments!!
The world should've made the band stay on that island for a few more albums!
Michael Vanderford micheal the world does not tell us......we tell the world.

Adore this, and this version in particular. So very beautiful.

I always love the unique bass of The Police.
