By making and dehydrating my own meals ahead of time using clean ingredients, I hope to be able to continue to eat (mostly!) clean during my Appalachian Trail thru hike!
Thanks for this display of your work. I have never actually bought any commercial meals. I've always made my own but I don't have the diversity you have. Excellent. Looking forward to you hike. Best wishes.
Garage Grown Gear! Love that site. Your meals and snacks are going to be 🔥! So nice of your sister to send them. We LOVED moon cheese on trail. Ate it with our dinner almost every night. 😂 way to think ahead and set yourself up for success!
Good for you! Couple years ago I followed a couple that packed out their own freeze dried meals. It was amazing to see the meals they were having, not that those store bought meals aren't good but they wouldn't hold a candle to their home made food. Looking forward to seeing how it goes and don't be surprised if you get a lot of sad eyes looking for leftovers 😉
You can also drink Probiotic Drinks while in town/hostels. That may help keep your system safe in many ways. Especially against nasty bugs on the Trail. (This is My Own Opinion.) Excellent prep video while on the AT! 👍😃
Good thought. I’m thinking fresh fruit, veggies, and a good Greek yogurt for the probiotic will be my in town staples. That’s what I’m *thinking* anyways. It’ll probably be pizza and donuts. 🤷🏽♀️😝
Good plan! I’m section hiking the AT each year and I dehydrate most of my own meals. Spaghetti was a favorite! The drop boxes I enjoyed packing up and enjoyed receiving them too. I had other items added to my box, like my prescription medicine, and other things I needed on a regular basis. I do believe I ate better- more nutritionally and definitely more cost effective and curtailed to my taste. Have fun with it. I used Pack it gourmet for some of my ingredients. Olive oil packets, for example. Garage grown gear btw.
@@gingertrine2912 awesome! Yes, she’s gonna send hygiene items and stuff too (like I’m being ridiculous and having her send like 5 Qtips at a time hahahaha) And yesssss I added that GARAGE GROWN GEAR sheesh that was gonna drive me nuts! 🤪
Haha, half the reason I would thru hike would be to eat the junk food. 😂 I'm kidding. I watch what I eat too so i can see why you're going through all the extra effort. You'll feel so much better too. 😊
Don’t get me wrong, if I feel like eating pizza or cheez its or M&Ms, by golly, I’m gonna! 😝 I’m viewing this kinda like when I was pregnant- listen to your body and give it what it wants. If my body says forget the spinach banana fruit leather, I want a snickers bar, I’ll listen! 🤣
@ That probably wasn’t me - I likely had rice with bullion cube, turkey pepperoni, chicken mountain house, unglazed blueberry pop tarts, nuts, and sour patch kids. 🤓
Basically I’m just going to cover the meal with water and let it sit in the pot cozy! I am testing a meal out before I leave, but the advice I got was for meals to just barely cover with water, and for soups to cover with a little extra. I am sure it’ll be a learning curve!!! 😬
What is this “recipe” word you speak of? 🤪🤪🤪 I will try…. 1) spaghetti: I mean, I know it’s just spaghetti, but here’s what I did: -1 box pasta -1.5 lbs ground turkey -1.5 large jars organic pasta sauce -seasoning as needed (I used garlic and onion seasoning) I made the spaghetti the night before and let it set in the fridge overnight. Put in dehydrator at 135 for 12 hours or until done. 2) Mexican ground turkey recipe: -ground turkey seasoned to taste like tacos (I used spicy Mrs dash and a taco seasoning packet)(I think I used a pound??? Can’t remember…) -Mexican street corn: my sis gave me this, she probably got it from Costco 🤷🏽♀️ it was like a frozen pouch -can of black beans I cooked all of those items together and then dehydrated at 145 for about 10 hours if I recall- until brittle 3) for the fruit leathers- blend fruit together. Note that at least one of your fruits should be high in pectin (like apples). I don’t add any sugar or honey or anything bc I just want it to be fruit! Spread the blended mix on parchment paper on dehydrator trays and dehydrate at 140 for about 8 hours (should not be wet, but should be pliable). 4) my brain hurts now. Tell me if you need any more 🥴🤪

Great prep work! I'm glad you're not worrying about carbs and fats. You'll need all of those you can get while hiking!
Absolutely! And even when I’m not hiking I don’t worry about fats and carbs 🤣
That looks awesome! I hope to see you on trail!

Good point! If I can’t finish something, I shouldn’t have issues disposing of it!
Woah you're hardcore!! Really impressed.
Great plan! And so glad you remembered the 3rd G. 😂
Oh you know that was the FIRST thing I did when I finished that video was to look that up!
Excellent!

Those look pretty compact - nice packaging effort 🤓
If you have any awesome recipes (that are mostly clean ingredients) send them my way! I feel like I remember being jealous of your food in GA…

@KrizAkoni maybe it was Papa??!! I just remember someone had homemade food from home…
@ possibly… 🤷♂️
Have you tested how much hot water and how long it takes to rehydrate each of your meals? Nothing worse than soggy or crunchy meals on the trail.

Yep I figured it out. But that could’ve cost me a night of sleep if I hadn’t!!!
