Schlager is definately THE showpiece of Austrian/European table-tennis. The technique, footwork, playstyle and especially his tactical decisions were mind-blowing!
I believe this match truly illustrates how much of a truly spectacular player Schlager was. His shots were so well placed really making Joo struggle to return a ball with heavy back spin. Also his footwork showcased here is absolutely immaculate. The movement and freedom we possess while we're young...
Great match! It's amazing that such a dedicated defensive player like Joo Se Hyuk can have such an lethal forehand when he spends most of his matches chopping. His forehand attack is like a hurricane!
In my opinion, probably the most interesting WTTC in history. All Chinese players eliminated before the finals, a low ranked chopper defeats the maestro Ma Lin, while Schlager takes out Kong in a seriously nail-biting seven set match and also defeats Wang Liqin after surviving three match points and taking the title. It would've been interesting if Joo had won this, though. I honestly believe he deserves to win some major title.
yea interesting for sure, but it was also joo se hyuk's first major appearance. there wasn't another strong modern defender until he showed up. joo se hyuk later defined "modern defender"
Werner, einfach super.
Best WTTC ever,by far. Here took place two of the best matches ever in the history of t.t.: Schlager-WLC Schlager-KLH Theese matchese were fully posted on UA-cam but were erased altogether with an amzing TT collection posted by Trashuman7,due to some copyright violation What a pity!
+Greger Karlsson Schlager inspired a whole table tennis generation by being the last non-chinese that won the WTTC, he kicked out the World champion and the Olympic champion in two legendary matches were he saved several match points, then beat the greatest defender in the history of table tennis who kicked out himself the World Cup champion, he had an outstanding tactical playing style, was one of the world's best servers at this time, and all that at age 31, so yes, Schlager is a legend, sorry if you don't agree
One of the best WTTC's , it was a real hero win for shlager ( in 1/4 he was loosing to wang liqin 3-0 and 10-7 , but won 4-3 , and in 1/2 was the same picture , 3-3 and 8-10 against kong linghui)
@ttCrawsaive its sick! against kong linghui, in the quarterfinal... he save a matchpoint with 11-12 and kong got the serve but schlager win 14-12! and in the semifinal against wang liqin he save 4 matchpoint with 2-3 6-10 and take it with 11-5 in the 7th! love him! :D
In comparison to the players at the time. If I'm not mistaken (correct me if I am), he was ranked 60-something at the time he played in this tournament.
unbelievable good game! legendary! thank you so much for the upload! it would be great if you also could upload the other matches of this competition, like ma lin vs. joo se hyuk, werner schlager vs. wang liqin etc.!
I would not want to say that Joo Se-Hyuk has better physics than Zhang Jike or any other top offensive player, but in fact you need a very special psychological profile to be a world class defender. IMHO that's a much higher obstacle than physics. It's not easy to stay confident under permanent bombardment. ;)
Two reasons why: 1) Last WTTC China did not dominate. 2) Defensive chopper made it through to the final = attractive games. But I don't think that nowadays WTTC-Finals are of less quality.
I love how the audience puts itself on the side of Schlager just because it's "Euro vs Asia". On the other hand I recently saw a match between Hennebont and Niederösterreich, where the crowd cheered for Ryu Seung Min and booed the hell at Schlager, just because he's not french. Isn't it paradox? I ask myself if they know that there was no korean world champion in men's table tennis history...
He did so because: 1. a young and inexperienced Ma Lin lost against Joo, a surprising result but something you could have seen coming. 2. Wang Liqin was also quite young at that time, even though he did have some experience. Wang lost his composure in the quarterfinal against Schlager (he lost several match points) and I believe he was in pain (some sort of injury from what I heard). 3. Liu Guoliang had retired after the ITTF banned his short pips. 4. Kong Linghui was at the end of his prime. While he was not old, he was far from his 2000 form, when he won the Olympics. The game was still amazing though, 7 unbelievable sets.
speed-glued everyone, that was 2003... but banning of speed glue has shown - who is who. Joo Se Hyuk is still within Top 10 players, and shlaggy is nobody now, no-bo-dy! Dust on the wind, he-he;)
Schlager is definately THE showpiece of Austrian/European table-tennis. The technique, footwork, playstyle and especially his tactical decisions were mind-blowing!
8:53 This is so wonderful!
Either one of them deserved the win. What a spectacular match
last european world champion...
7 years later, still the same (and also last not Chinese world champion, carzy)
I believe this match truly illustrates how much of a truly spectacular player Schlager was. His shots were so well placed really making Joo struggle to return a ball with heavy back spin. actually he used to be an offensive player when he started playing tt
Do you have any videos of him before he was a chopper by any chance?

8:46 LEGENDARY point !
This really is one of the coolest games I've ever watched. Thanks for uploading!
Schlager, a legend 4 sure
***** learn some decent English m8, then u will be considered as a legend ;)))
*****
His attitude, his super bold long serves and his crazy way of playing is what's legendary about him.

+Greger Karlsson You have Timo Boll forgotten
+Tom Scholtes In the last 10 years he was the only player who can beat the Chinese players
you forget how good joo played this wttc. AWESOME. His match vs malin was crazy, and here he was a really hard enemy for schlager. legendary game

Best match on youtube.
These crazy and powerfull forehand and backhand Werner Schlager's top spins... no comment
@ttCrawsaive its sick!
against kong linghui, in the quarterfinal...
he save a matchpoint with 11-12 and kong got the serve
but schlager win 14-12!

Ich vermisse die alten Zeiten :(
My favorite match :)
Thanks, really enjoyed this match. Schlager was good against defense.
best WTTC ever
In comparison to the players at the time. If I'm not mistaken (correct me if I am), he was ranked 60-something at the time he played in this tournament.
@ttCrawsaive I thought about that for a million times and still can't think it's possible.
5:18 such a magical point at such a crucial point in the match.
sports history ..
Werner Schlager is my hero!
What Schlager and Joo Se Hyuk did in this WTTC.
3:53 - Joo is awesome.
4:41 - See above.
5:58 - See above.
8:47 - Schlager is awesome.
very niceeeeee clasic videos =)
Plz more from wttc 2003
woah, amazing serves!
Schlager is definitely greater than Boll
2002 WTTC champion? what?
2005 champion is for WTTC is Wang Liqin
His style is really good but not Boll
Schlager has a more important title.. But boll is prime for 15 years now...
Hard to choose
wow, schlager is really a great Player, the most fun to watch, am trying to copy his moves and great technique...
unbelievable good game! legendary!
thank you so much for the upload!
it would be great if you also could upload the other matches of this competition, like ma lin vs. joo se hyuk, werner schlager vs. wang liqin etc.!
@cata60 Yes, i remember that collection, transhuman7 has the first on youtube to post full matches
This may also come from the fact that "Shlaggy" is nearly 10 years older than Joo. It can be doubted that Joo will still be world class in 2020.
Well answer your own comment now that it is 2022
I would not want to say that Joo Se-Hyuk has better physics than Zhang Jike or any other top offensive player, but in fact you need a very special psychological profile to be a world class defender. great match hyuk also great player!!!!!!!
i like this video
Hello 2020
Amazing! The best tabletennis match i´ve ever seen and maby the best game ever
best chopper in the world
JUST EPIC !
Two reasons why: 1) Last WTTC China did not dominate. 2) Defensive chopper made it through to the final = attractive games.
But I don't think that nowadays WTTC-Finals are of less quality.
Joo feels more comfortable chopping
I love how the audience puts itself on the side of Schlager just because it's "Euro vs Asia". On the other hand I recently saw a match between Hennebont and Niederösterreich, where the crowd cheered for Ryu Seung Min and booed the hell at Schlager, just because he's not french. peak of europian table tennis :)
Tarssay Ferencznek is köszönheti Schlager hogy világ bajnok lett 2003!
i think it is the narnia epic music , search it like that
I think Joo was more passive in this match, very different match with ma lin
got it.
Werner!
9:45 werner schlager like a boss
Zhang jike ripping off his shirt xD can it get more emotional ?
Someone...Please tell me the music when he wins!!
Are they using speed glue here in 2003?
3:53 to 4:00.. DAMN good attacking by Joo
would've been more epic if joo won! tht way people would STOP insulting modern defense in the comment sections
Schlager big boss !
@livingeasi wang liqin got beaten by werner schlager he just playd amazingly. also joo se hyuk won against ma lin
First time and last time...
@livingeasi joo se hyuk knocked out ma lin, while schlager knocked out kong linghui and wang liqin.
I wander what will happen to ma long when he gets old
The boss
Good
Schlager will be the last white world champion tt for looooooooong loooonggggg time...
Timo Boll 2005
@@gordon8655 that was world cup. Not wttc
where are all the chinese? how could the european get in the final on WTTC??????

wow, so much interesting information from you, thanks a lot!!!
What BH rubber does Joo use?
Claudio Rodriguez Palma and the other rubber and blade?
long pimples tsp curl p1r
unbelievable game.
i really wanted joo to win ;/
I would say Zhang Jike rip his shirt off is definitely as emotional
auhauhahu 6:13 was the best !
the only reason schlager won this final is because his training partner was a chopper..
speed-glued everyone, that was 2003... but banning of speed glue has shown - who is who.
Joo Se Hyuk is still within Top 10 players, and shlaggy is nobody now, no-bo-dy! Dust on the wind, he-he;)
low ranked?
Who the fuck is Chen...
