visually, I would guess, the area would be much the same as it was after the ice age, 11,500 years ago. Rugged, coast to the West, with views of the Isles, revealed through gaps in the terrain as the trail snakes south. It's desolate, and beautiful. It's right at the edge of the HIghlands. Moor and heath, hill and mountain. Dramatic sunsets over the islands to the West, looking towards Ireland. You can picture the people. There must have been many. They'd be sailing around the Isles and to Ireland a lot. Fishing, trading, mixing with their tribesmen. The landscape is primordial and looks barely touched. The structures blend in perfectly. Their villages are long gone though. I don't know if much is known about living quarters there
I went there in the early 1970's on a school trip organised by the great Mairi Patterson. It blew my mind. I returned a few years ago on a day very like that shown in your video...cold, sunny, light snow on the ground. Our ancestors were cultured, knowledgeable intelligent, artistic....their works live on.
The ancestors were certainly all of the above you mentioned and more. I shot all the footage and photography at the end of January, beginning of February (Imbolc) a few years ago, there was hardly anybody there.

Thank you for the best video about kilmartin glen. I was there and the museum was closed. I did not walk about much and now realize what I missed and will be back again to discover what I missed.

I haven't been. But I will someday. And just like the Avebury landscape, the idea of one small area representing not one culture but many along with thousands of years of change is amazing.

This is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. We stumbled across it while driving, and stayed the night and the next day. The best site was the pub. The locals trading jabs was priceless.

I have put this Documentary out before but this is the HD (High Definition) version, better picture quality.
I went in July. It was magical. We walked from 7am until 9pm walking round kilmartin glen. The rock art was amazing. They look like maps. I also found out that some of the rock art was engraved using quartz. I was wondering if anyone knew if this would have been reflective at night. I will be back as the museum was shut when we went. It's open now I think. Thank you Martin for all your hard work. Your photos and videos are so amazing.

Although, you would have to bring your own food, drinks and snacks… they probably wouldn’t have food stores. I would have to go back and forth a lot , but it would be worth it, truly amazing. A wonderful video. And the beautiful Scottish accent of the narrator is mesmerizing.

I ran a rental cottage in Kilmichael Glassary for a few years, my visitors loved this area and couldnt believe what a well kept secret the Kilmartin Glen is. My favourites are the Lady Glassary cairns and the rock art at Achnabrech & Kilmichael Glassary.
The Achnabreck rock art is awesome, probably the best site in the UK for ancient petroglyphs. I haven't been to the Lady Glassery cairns, I will look them up on my next visit. Thanks for leaving a comment.

I hope you get to visit these amazing ancient sites and if not hopefully my films are the next best thing to actually being there.
The south end of Kyle of Tongue in north Sutherland, has a prominent rock overlooking Loch Heikal covered in over 20 cup and ring marks on its horizontal face. Not so common in the far north of Scotland, they exist in remote locations and are marked on the very detailed OS Explorer series maps. A recumbent stone by the access road near here is covered in simple cup marks. To find these remote carved rocks takes quite a lot of effort, but worth it.

Made the detour here from Torridon on my way back south this year. Great place to visit, shame the visitor centre was shut and I knew nothing of the slab with rock art a little way away. I live right by Anglesey, Wales and we have so many neolithic / bronze age monuments here too
The new Kilmartin museum opened at the beginning of September 2023. I have been to Anglesey and visited most of the well known sites on the Island, a fascinating place for Prehistory. Thanks, Martin.

Looking at the rock cut marks on the bedrock, I was picturing in my mind, the Stone Age people in their animal skin clothes chipping away EXACTLY on that spot 5000 years ago. That is incredible.

was there 18 years ago in depth of winter, on a long drive. I had no idea about it. It was a total, magical revelation. Britain's best kept secret. I kind of hope it stays a secret
Kilmartin is not as well known as the sites on Orkney or Callanish, even the Aberdeenshire recumbent stone circles are not that well known. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Tragic but true. Far too many a holes desecrating places without blinking an eye. Very disturbing to primitive decency no doubt.
My grandma was born in Campbeltown and I really want to explore my Scottish lineage and visit these places.

I have a totally amateur theory about Templewood North & South.
They began the first one, but something interrupted them. It could have been plague, bad harvests, animal diseases, or even clan warfare. Who knows. But when they recovered, they resumed building and decided to make a larger circle. Perhaps out of gratitude or as extra protection against further calamity. Just a pet theory of mine.
Hi Jim, interesting theories there, perhaps the location was important to the ancestors.
Yes and since we don't know the exact time difference between the two circles, it could have been the original builders who returned, or their descendants. If so, surely they felt a duty to complete the site in some way.
There are a few other examples of sites in Scotland erected very close to each other.
This brings back memories. I first visited Kilmartin Glen, when I was studying archaeology at Glasgow Uni. I have visited on a few occasions since. I'm overdue a visit.
Kilmartin is awesome, especially the rock art.
They look like star maps. Perhaps what they could see our solar system, as well as the stars. We have several of these in America. What's interesting, is that they are very similar to one another.
Star maps is a common theory for the meaning of the cup and ring. The cup and ring design is very common in the UK and beyond. Thanks for leaving a comment.
This is a fantastic site to visit and the museum, while small, is quite well curated. We loved it, especially the facial reconstruction. Just amazing.

Beautiful land with very interesting standing stone which are fascinating and spiritual. One can imagine the rituals and uses for these stones.
Your descriptions are wonderful and cultural meanings really make one think of the people at that time.
Thank God you have no venomous snakes! Here in the states any stone mounds are rattlesnake homes and that is east and west. Right outside of Boston is the Blue Hills which contain many caves, cairns and rock mountains, many of them from glacial times. Indian artifact and items from the Revolutionary war have been found in those hills. These hills are active homes to Eastern rattlers and copperheads, so one has to be careful hiking as they sun on huge expanses of rock face and mounds. These formations and the woods always bring my mind back in time to the people that inhabited them and their possible stories. Thank you for this talk.
We only have one venomous snake - the adder. Fortunately for us, they don't tend to hibernate in caves/ hollows! They are usually found on drier, sandier landscapes - and where you find lots of heather. They rarely bite humans, but they do bite our dogs - when waking up in Spring.

I have seen a snake once, in a remote location and it was a small one.
I was doing a pond survey once, on a Common, and a large grass snake swam past me. It was about 3'6 long. Even though I knew it was harmless, it still gave me a fright! I wasn't expecting it to be such a good swimmer. It was beautiful though.

Great video. I grew up In Slockavullin, just next to Temple wood. I watched the cists being excavated in the 70's and got to hold one of the arrow heads. I also was involved in the excavation of the cict and skull at the Kilmartin quarry sight in the 90's. there are 3 more cists in the glen that you never mentioned. One is behind the North lodge just south of temple wood. Another is a few hundered meters south west on the Tayness road and another set of cairns and cists further south near the west lodge.

Thank you, I am not sure what you mean by the recent gravel corrie.
I meant the former location of the cursus monument and surrounding traces, at the north end of the linear setting. I always regret the loss of ancient monuments.
Martin, somebody mentioned in a comment that they looked like maps. They are in fact maps. I enjoyed your commentary. It was very informative. Very thorough also, and although you mentioned that somebody wrote down a lot of possibilities as to what these carvings are, there is only one that is fact. They are maps. I live in Australia, and have learnt to associate some of the simpler stones to Google maps. Every mark on the Cochmo Stone, Monzie, Badger Stone, Loughcrew Equinox Stone, Stele di Boeli, and others, so it is now factual evidence to me that perhaps every one of these stones can be deciphered. Look. Work this out. It will boggle your mind as to what your ancestors have done. If I can work this out from here you have a much better chance from where you are. Many thanks again for allowing me to watch another of your very interesting videos. Your commentaries have always been clear and concise. Thank You.
Are they maps of the local area or the night sky?
They are very much local area maps. If you look NNE of Lock Turret Reservoir You will see a feature that relates directly to and looks exactly like the five sided cup and ring mark on Monzie F. I call this the Eye of Monzie. Start there. I have zoomed to every motif on this stone and it is not good viewing. I have hoped to see some videos or photos of these as the photos on Google Earth are not appropriate to any point on these maps. Thank you for listening Martin and I wish that you will enjoy looking at this as much as I have in the past 8 to 9 years. They have never ceased to fascinate me. P.S The stone circles Including "The HENGE" were constructed and used (not just as astronomical clocks and calenders) to make these cartographs.@@BeforeCaledonia

I have been trying to make a video but there are circumstances that I can't work through at this time e.g. long work hours, printer ink and printer, and abillity. I have made videos in the past and although they are of poor quality, they were made to simply highlight the fact that these are maps. If you were to searct Cup and Ring Marks. Sunstones Explained, Cup and Ring Marks Revisited, or Loughcrew Cairns, and look for my G, you might find that these "Art Works" hold more secrets than you ever imagined. Good luck and I hope to see many more of your future adventures. My daughter has said there is a way to make short vids on UA-cam so I will explore this in good time as work and family allow. I went about 25 years ago.
Fascinating stuff. There's far more than I thought. Just really passing through so not a lot of time but started at Dunadd Hill Fort and worked along the valley to Kilmatin church.
I would need more time and now retired but the weather has been so bad for a motorbike. I'd like to see some Pictish standing stones too.
Thank You! The Kilmartin area is saturated with Prehistory, there is much more that is not in my film. There are a quite a few Pictish stones in Angus & Aberdeenshire.

Awesome! Watching this documentary kept giving me chills. Unfortunately, I have never been able to go to Scotland. My Mcdonald family line came from the Highlands of Scotland possibly clan GlennGarey, since I have a brother named Garey and a brother named GLENN. I’m not really sure since I haven’t been able to document my McDonald line much beyond mid 1800s. My Brown family line came from somewhere in the Highlands of Scotland and fled to Antrim Ireland in the reign of King James.

The cairns are meant to be a linear cemetery. Regarding the dating of the sites, I assume they used carbon dating. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.

Amazing. Did you know that we have boulders and rock faces in North America that have similar designs hammered or carved into them? There are some of us who believe that the people who left behind these monuments are related to the people who left behind the rock in the British Isles and Western Europe. We believe they were capable of traveling by boat over long distances.
That is really interesting, I am glad you enjoyed the documentary. I also think the ancient people were travelling large distances around the globe.
@@BeforeCaledonia I think they settled, and at the very least traveled through Western Europe, North Africa, what is now Canada, and of course, down into the United States, including the south eastern United States, where I live. Mainstream academia is terrified of this research getting out into the public but it’s too late! There are a few people like myself working on this, trying to figure out who these people were, and where they came from. I lived in the UK for over a decade and studied Archaeology while I was there. I had three mentors. One was an archaeologist, another was a historian, and another was a stone knapper. I learned a lot from all three. One of the interesting things I have begun to get into recently in America is the use of stone in pecking and grinding. You wouldn’t believe how much stuff I am finding now. There are very few people who study this aspect of prehistory I know that a group of people passed through the area where I live about 2500 years ago. They left things behind. This is why I began to search. I didn’t realize we had so many connections with the rock art that is found in Ireland and Scotland and Northumberland. But we do. I think these people had trans oceanic navigational capabilities. It would explain their knowledge of the stars and the movement of the sun and moon. They were highly intelligent and they left the marker stones behind as guides I believe. I also think they were left behind as memorials for the dead and the memory of those, that may have been lost on journeys
Having found out I have ancestry from Scotland I am trying to learn its history and your dialect.

The cup & ring carvings being star maps is a common theory, to my knowledge I don't think it has been properly investigated.

There is lots of stones which make up the cairn material.

My last name is McJunkin which is Scottish MacJunkin is Irish. My grandfather had a heavy Scottish accent.

Are these the same type of cairns found at Clava ,near Culloden ?
The Kilmartin cairns are different.
It's amazing that people have forgotten their roots. They know nothing of their pasted history and must dig up graves to try to figure out who they themselves are.

The circles are for herding wild animals and the driveways are, guess what, for driving wild animals. This is well within living memory.. see a film 'lost in the barrens' where a nativve girl single handedly captures a whole herd of deer.
It's likely that when hunting became less crucial there was some association between pens and forebears, that's about the time they started using stone. It's clear from Avebury that domestic pigs were hunted at Christmas (or whatever they called it then) in the traditional way. This must have been monumentally exciting (ha) and the date would have been very important or some yob would get impatient and let the pigs out early.
Sorry but the idea of people in robes in solemn procession is quite ridiculous and just shows what a grip humourless academics still have on the subject

The Picts came much later than the Neolithic & Bronze Age.

Place looks about 200 yrs old . It's not very old.
The sites in this film are Neolithic & Bronze Age which is much older than 200 years old. Thanks for watching.
