Had this played at my husband's funeral two years ago as he was taken into the crematorium. He was taken far too soon; a young man of only 43. He adored Mansun and I'm so sad to say I didn't appreciate them enough while he was alive, despite him talking about them so much. He was a great musician and was so inspired by them. Even made his own concept album called Polly and the Worm, inspired by Dark Mavis and the vicar. I miss him so much. He and my son are credited singing in the chorus on one of Paul Draper's solo albums. Rest in peace beloved man. 💔
When I was at uni back in '97, these guys were meant to be playing at our end of year festival, but they dropped out and we got the Dust Junkies instead. never mind.
I was looking for a song today, hummed part of the riff into youtube's microphone search feature, and this song came up. Instant fan, I love the vocal styles and different sections and transitions in this song. It's also not the song I was looking for... almost certainly better!
Can't remember hearing such a dramatic single for years then eventually getting a vid as dull a mismatch.. glorious production and arrangement vs hopelessly understated visuals
Just found the 7" of this on clear vinyl in my singles collection; completely forgotten owning or even hearing it for 20yrs; it's as if my life happened to someone else. 😳
Dear Mavis I'm compelled to write this letter In the hope that you may soon be getting better I've a feeling you should go and see a doctor If you haven't then you know you really oughta I was worried so I went to see the vicar But before I could confess he first confessed to be a stripper Dear Mavis it was very strange to see him So I thought I'd write and ask you your opinion Should I grass on him, report him to the Cardinal? Or whether I should egg him on to turn professional? If I dob on him they'll call him plastic scouser But the only thing the Stripper Vicar wears is plastic trousers Mavis' opinion is all we really seek Mavis' opinion is all we Should we lie while he's still alive? Should we lie while he's still alive? 'Cos when the vicar strips he gets away with it Dear Mavis thought I'd follow up my letter Drop a line about the fate of our poor vicar Very tragically his time on Earth is ended Found him gagged and bound in stockings and suspenders Dear Mavis if you tell us what your thoughts are And I hope that they're not biased 'cos you are the vicar's daughter Mavis's opinion, all we really seek Mavis's opinion, all we, should we... Should we lie now that he has died? Should we lie now that he has died? 'Cos when the vicar strips he gets away with it And we know him as our vicar And by night a part-time stripper And the vicar got suspended In his stockings and suspenders And he's making wine from water While he dresses like his daughter And we know that he's a rip off 'Cos we've seen him with his kit off Should we lie now that he has died? Should we lie now that he has died? 'Cos when the vicar strips he gets away with it
The video is shot at Whitby Abbey, how do I know this? I went to this location a decade ago .. on a whistle stop tour of Scarborough - on - Sea, York and Whitby
No...it was Llanthony Priory, Capel Y Finn and on the common below Hay Bluff in the Black Mountaina. Close to where the opening scene from American Werewolf in London was filmed.
Regarding stalking his ex? The charges were dropped, I believe. I know Dominic Chad has told him not to contact him or his family. Dominic has a profile on LinkedIn - he’s left the music business, he’s some kind of physio now.
@@kdp8133 Yeah Chad dropped a bunch of details of Draper showing up at his house repeatedly and engaging in stalker type behaviour in a post of Facebook which he has since deleted. I think he just doesn't want the hassle. A bunch of other accusations came out about Draper but nothing went to court so all must be taken with a pinch of salt, but he sounds like a pretty unpleasant guy all round.

One of the greatest bands of all time
Britpop was a fantastic time to be a young teenager growing up that whole 90s thing, I sure miss it 🇬🇧 👍
I always thought these guys were an anomaly to the brit pop era. And imo far more interesting than 95% of what brit pop had to offer.
This song has a lot going on. It’s like 5 different singles in one track.
yeah its nicely structured
Beautiful song
Thirteen years later and this still sounds fantastic. Great music is timeless.
It's now 23, Fookin scary....
23 years and still awsome
It's an absolute corker of a track.
13 more years and still classic
26 and still banging!

The whole narrative about the vicar is excellent and Dark Mavis completes the character .
So glad I got to see these live back in the day in Stoke.
I have always Loved Mansun from the very start, especially Paul Draper. He is the hottest man on the planet ? Anybody disagree ?

Great song, always makes me smile!

Still prevelant in modern times.

Never forgot Wide Open Space though; I havn't got dementia..
Haha I know what you mean though. I still have so many indie bands cds and vinyl I can't remember a lot of where they came from.
even today vicars still get away with it
Spot on my man, bunch of nonces pulling the strings... SCARY SATANIC WORLD!
I think I fancied all of them at one point lol 😅
fantastic group, immense live.
Original and enchanting.
Hi I recommend an indie song called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
The best British band in the last 20 years, no arguement
definitely
I'd say second to manic street preachers
That'd be Porcupine Tree. But Mansun might just be second.
Cardiacs
Oh my gosh.... I love this so much! kudos!
The first video I saw with this great band and be enchanted at once :-D MTV is good sometimes :-)
That's an example of overproduction being good.

Drop a line about the fate of our poor vicar
Very tragically his time on Earth is ended
Found him gagged and bound in stockings and suspenders

Great tune. Shame Paul Draper seems like a total nutter. Very disappointed in the news about him.
Why what have you heard? Send me a letter.
