Getting Lost in the Grounds of Britain’s Finest Manor House - Behind the Scenes at Mapperton Ep 5
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- In this episode, I'm retracing the footsteps of a walk I made almost every day during lockdown, through Mapperton Gardens and into the surrounding countryside. A lot has changed since the spring, but there are still plenty of beautiful and interesting things to see. We cross the river upstream of a small waterfall, fight through a carpet of ferns, and meet some friendly four-legged friends. And we may have even got just a little bit lost! Most of this walk is through private areas of the estate, so you really are seeing behind the scenes at Mapperton Estate!

You are so blessed to be able to live there. That said, Mapperton is SO BLESSED to have found you. You are their most important, most valuable servant. It is your energy, imagination and hard work that will save Mapperton.
I'm impressed on how well she has adapted and made Great Britain her home. Love her and these videos
This stupid. This woman and husband are not living the lives of ordinary working class English. Montagu and husband would be lost in the every day life of Brits..
@@Lilactime402 and you know this how?
Impressive Julie knows the names of the Gardner's. Andy. Nice to know she is down to earth. :-) Sooo sweet Julie keeps saying "be careful Steven" so he won't get hurt.
Of course she would know the name of the people working on her estate, it would be nonesense not to!
How did you trace your children in these labyrinthine gardens?
The cows are beautiful too!!! I am so jealous. You are very blessed, and we thank you for sharing your life with us!
They are beautiful, but I still don't trust them!
I adore your down to earth attitude and the simplicity in all aspects of your life
Wow! No wonder you are in such good shape!! Thank you for taking me with you on such a lovely walk. It’s winter here and snow and windy. Too brisk for me !
The grounds are just beautiful!
Thank you for showing off the beautiful grounds on your estate - I'm a big fan of appreciating nature at its finest. You do such a good job at ad-libbing informative tidbits and the shots & transitional edits are on point - makes the videos enjoyable to watch.
Thank you so much, so glad you enjoy them!
infraredthomas thank you so much! Lots more to come! Xx
@@AmericanViscountess Thank you for the off the beaten path footage.
These episodes are refreshing. Nice change of pace from news programs, or sitcoms. Also, Julie’s optimism and enthusiastic appreciation of everything around her makes these a very positive and educational entertainment. Do they have ticks and Lyme disease in England? She is fearless.
Thank you for your kind words. Yes, we do have to look out for ticks, but there aren't so many this year because of the cold weather we've been having lately.
You are so American and humble, I like your excitement in living in the Montagu lifestyle. I feel at home, which is so sweet. I do like mom and dad!
Thank you so much!
My parents are Scottish and immigrated to Canada in the late 60’s and I never felt like they had very strong Scottish accents compared to all our relatives still living in Scotland but when any friends met either of my parents they said they did have strong Scottish accents and I had one friend say he had a hard time understanding my father which I was surprised by.
It must have been amazing to grow up on an estate like that with so much space to explore.
Can not tell you how enjoyable these episodes are, thank you so very much indeed for your content, efforts, spirituality, wit and for being you! You are brilliant! Also, the series on stately houses is amazing.... you are fun and fab Julia, keep it coming. Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
Wonderful to hear and keep coming back every week!
What a magnificent place to live! Being an artist, I would be in paradise with so many fabulous things to paint. You are so brilliant in sharing your lovely English family estate with us all. Best of everything with your new ventures in the "hopper". I'm sure you and your husband will be successful in all that you do. Alyce in America ☆
“Boggy” is definitely a word. Commonly used in Connecticut, where I grew up.
It must be a dream come true to live in such a beautiful country. I just recently found all pf your videos and I absolutely love you. Thank you for sharing.
I very much enjoyed this!! I remember you from ladies of London and what a breath of fresh air to see you in true form. Your personality is so endearing 💕
What a marvelous Estate. What a blessing to have it be yours and share it with us. What a beautiful walk to enjoy and a blessing to see daily. 🌳💼♻️
Thank you so much!
Your enthusiasm is contagious.
You crack me up! I love your American humor and spunkiness!😆
I think Mapperton Is so lucky to have you. You look , and enable us to see Nature and beauty with amazement through your gazing , innocent eyes. You discover and and we do too. The waterfall, the doves the ferns Grazie mille !from the south of Italy. We are amidst a Great heat wave....
So, so beautiful! I absolutely love your channel.
Thank you so much!
i love that you said…I’ve been here for 20 years. And then a few sentences later say…Is this where I want to be? You are so funny! I totally enjoy watching these videos and hearing you speak about your life and where you are living. Thank you for sharing!
What a magnificent property! Thank you for showing it to us.
Thanks for sharing! I'm so fascinated with old-english-houses together with the bricks, gardens and pathways. Magnificent landscapes, indeed ♥
It is amazing the history. Just think of all the ancestors that have walked those paths and fields.
My husband and I want to go and stay in England for maybe a week since we have never been there. Would love to visit Mapperton if it isn't possible to stay there!
Wow, walking in such beautiful surroundings must of made lockdown a little easier.
I have just found your channel.Love it! Thank you for sharing your time and home with us. Mapperton is lovely. Watching from Connecticut USA. US has bogs...cranberries grow in bogs😌
I love watching all these episodes! Thanks for showing us so much of the estate!
I know traditionally, dovecotes were kept to collect eggs and dung for fertilizer, but do you use these at Mapperton today, or is it just for the doves to hang out there now?
I live on the west coast of Canada, and I can recognize a lot of similar plant life in the walk, like stinging nettle and wild mustard, etc.
Canadian culture is interesting because it's a blend of British and American influences...I've definitely heard and used the term "boggy" before. Bogs are a slightly different ecology than swamps though. Swamps are usually more muddy and watery, but bogs usually have peat, and while they can be certainly damp and soggy, are more made of spongy soft earth that moisture will seep out of rather than have much standing water, like a swamp.
Also, please get your poor gardener a wagon! I'm concerned for his back!
Hello! I've been reading people's comments AND it's fair to say, we all feel the same about the wonderful home and property you have. The dovecote was so interesting to see...it's beautiful! Thank you for taking us on the private tour around your magnificent property! And boy, are in awesome shape!
I so appreciated watching this. I am in constant pain and this is great therapy. Thank You! I will tune in to other episodes.
Thank you so so much for posting this. I’m absolutely mesmerized by the beauty of the wilderness and your country in total. My hubby and I are looking at buying a wide beam canal boat to live in when we retire as we love England and it’s beauty
I can’t wait to walk the woodlands . Absolutely beautiful. ❤️
Beautiful scenery. Worth noting that there are plenty of public rights of way around the estate which are clearly marked.
The show was so interesting. Now I watch you on here. The passion and fun of the estate has me so in awe. I'd be thrilled with 100 acres. I'm into nature and expanding on it. As it should be. Adding to it to enjoy it forever. Thank you.
Thank you Genie! I will be bringing you more of these types of videos soon, including a whole new series of ‘Travels with Julie’ which will be up on my Patreon account this Sunday.
That was a lovely walk! I was raised in the countryside in Texas, where we had a large creek and cows and trees, only about 240 acres but remote and so lovely. We had many many hours of fun, picnics, and of course, work. It was very reminiscent to watch Julie wander along.
I am so going to watch this again while on the treadmill! I felt guilty not making this power walk with you! Wonderful!
The cows!!! Maybe wear subtle colors.
Grounds are spectacular.Soothing walks, great exercise.thanks for the video tour.
What a beautiful and peaceful place to walk.
I'm not sure how I missed this wonderful video! The doves are beautiful! Can you show a video of your pear and apple recipes? You can definitely see your love in your home, family and staff! Andy needs a wheelbarrow or cart!!!! My goodness how his back must hurt! So many lovely flowers!I love your waterfall! So calming to listen to! Great job Stephen on your amazing filming! You need to clear your pathways so your safe!!! It looks quite treacherous in certain areas! I'd be afraid of snakes going through all of the grassy, wooded area! Also, great job going over the fences and gates! I would've fallen over them, for sure! 😊 Thank you for sharing this incredible video! I loved it! Please do another one like this!
So crazy woman here, do you have a lot of close calls with ticks and Lyme disease? No, that is not the only thought, magnificent estate and home. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful country❤️
Have to love your love for everything British and still have an American accent. James my husband is from Michigan and we have been in Ireland for more than 20 years.
Watching this again. Not only am I enjoying your vids, vlogs, I am also having the dose of that good old medicine.... Laughter! Thank you so much Julie and Co. xxx Love that '' looking at me , looking at you" gesture ha ha ha
Has Stephen got eyes on the back of his heads. He must have!!!! Amazing skill!
Thank you & Stephen for the Lovely & Awesome walk- so Gracious !
Lovely! Thank you from New Hampshire!
The more of these videos I watch, the more I realize what an amazing your estate is! So beautiful.
So beautiful 😍 💖 💗 Thank you for sharing your beautiful home and gardens
You are so welcome
We use 'boggy' in the US too - at least in the Northeast, where there are bogs.
Thoroughly enjoying your videos.and glad that you have settled into your life in Britain with your husbands family.
So beautiful! Love the old gardens!
Great walk! I'm very envious. Fascinated to hear your accent: my wife, Susan was born and raised in the NW suburbs of Chicago, but she's been an adopted English woman for 37 years now, so her American accent has faded even more.
Stephen (Steven) is a very talented cameraman, and adorable looking as well!
Thank you Ana! Did you know I have my own channel now too, with my partner Claire? We'd be delighted if you could join us there too!
Walking through the ground of Mapperton every day, would be a great way to get exercise and get the heart rate up! Not to mention stress relief. :)
We have a bog on our land in Northern Wisconsin that has a bog on it. In the fall if your super careful you can pick wild cranberries on it.
Wow! Such gorgeous property! I really enjoyed this!
"It is hot today" as you're wearing your sweater and jeans lol. Aloha from Maui, Hawaii!
Here in England a hot day is when we only have to wear tshirt, shirt and sweater. On a warm day, we would wear a coat as well...
Wow, traipsing around the countryside dressed in a cable knit jumper & suit jacket...your deep Summer must colder than our deep Winter, I felt i might overheat just watching you! Beautiful countryside
So very wonderful
Thank you! 😊
I followed along with my elliptical, it was great! Please do more walks!
I have just started viewing your show, and find it very refreshing and beautiful. Thank you and your family for bring us all into your world and home.
Wonderful to hear!
Richard J Shene thank you so much!!! And have a lovely weekend x
If my dream of visiting England ever comes true, I'd love to see all of this! We use the word "boggy" in healthcare to indicate something is "mushy"...lol 🥰
I'd love to have such a dove building. Fantastic! Then the herbs. Very nice.
Please send Andy here when his work is done. I need an Andy to care for my grounds. Hah! Lol!
Thanks.
Jim, from Houston, TX USA.
So very beautiful Julie. It looks remarkably similar to the countryside in New York State where I live. Very lush and green with green pastures and meadows. The property at Mapperton is gorgeous, stunning.
You should have plenty of snowdrops now. Love walking through English countryside. A lovely view of the estate.
I am really enjoying your broadcasts . I think you were mainly walking through bracken rather than ferns.
Wonderful!!
I wish I had gardens and woods to walk in, beautiful 😍 can't wait to visit England again and this time tour Mapperton.
We look forward to welcoming you to Mapperton real soon!
I'm so invested in these videos and the History omg😍 I can wait for lock down to end I need to come vist❤
That’s definitely a good workout I’d definitely pay to do that scenic workout super cool views
Im new and catching up on old vlogs - how lovely you have this private space to walk so so pretty - deff do not trust the cows esp if they have calves they will deff chase and can trample - thanks for sharing ❤
Here in upper state of New Hampshire USA..we have Bogs and in the spring they are call boggy because of so much moisture!! Good video thanks for sharing!😊
Good of Andy to carry that but can you get him a wheelbarrow?
Seriously has back is going to give out.
Lol! That’s what I was thinking!
I'm in Ohio and I say boggy.... a boggy marsh, for example. Also, cows are just so darn nosy!! But harmless. They will follow you. lol I live near a walking trail that has a farm along one side and the cows often get out of the fence (that needs repaired.) I put them back when I find them walking down the trail. The bigger ones know where to go to get back in but the young ones I sometimes have to practically drag back to the fence opening. I am the cow whisperer of my area.
Amazing walk, very beautiful. In Australia we say if we get stuck in mud or soft sand in the car when driving the saying is we got bogged lol
Wonderful, thank you!
So lovely, thank you
Bog or boggy is also used here in the Southern States. I'm in South Florida and we sometimes refer to the swampy areas as bog or boggy. Also saying " bogged down" as in stuck in the mud or having too much to do at one time you can get "bogged down" with work etc.
Lovely!
Beautiful
A Californian, I’ve always known bog/boggy, and water meadow, but more often we say slough, marsh or wetland.
Julie, I don't mean to be rude but you and your hubby should maybe look at getting a couple of utes or vehicles that the poor gardeners can use to lug all the garden waste, they aren't mules or donkeys to carry such loads on their backs and god knows for how long of a distance. . Please look into this matter asap. Thanks.
To me, an American, you definitely have a transatlantic accent. I have been thinking that the entire time, that you don't have a straight-up American accent. Your words seem very clearly enunciated. Some words come across as English and some American.
Friends of mine had a place near Lake Tahoe that in spring the snow flowers would bloom and it was possible to increase their presence in the area by taking soil where they had bloomed and by burrying needles etc would see them emerge come the next spring because the bloom from spores that land on the soil that if buried will bloom.
This was just soo beautiful
Enjoyed your walk x
Louise from 🇺🇸 love watching your channel.
Yay! Thank you!
Boggy means wet. Cranberries grow in bogs but as far as I know they are flooded when it comes time to harvest them if using the water technique. All water technique harvested cranberries are made into jelly and only the dry harvested ones sold in packages.
Wow the dovecote was build in 1665. 1665-1666 were a couple of really terrible years (at least from our perspective now) for England. I wonder if the people who lived at Mapperton then, stayed where they were as much as they could during those years. Hopefully there were no trips to London either year!
Need a golf cart to carry those loads. Gardner
I just found your channel. I love it!
Welcome!!
@@AmericanViscountess Thank you! I’m snowed in here in New York I’m still watching your channel lol
Red wood or sequoia in Latin. Is the tree. I guess if we were from California you would maybe know that. Ha! Ha!! Love 💕 the show from Ireland. I love gardens we have a lot in Ireland too.
Love the waterfall and it's sound! You said the water is warm, but yet you are wearing a sweater and long pants. What is the temperature in farenheit in the summer
Good question! Maybe 68 degrees....
How strange, I am from the US and to me you sound totally American. I hear nothing British in your accent. The Estate paths you are showing are so beautiful. Thank you so much.
Thank you for watching!!!
How many people should work over there on a daily basis to maintain this property?
Thinking maybe the cows were just wondering what you were running from and thought they should run too!
Oh my God,I'm freaking myself out. I was thinking where's her magnolia and there is one right there.
Thanks beautiful! We have alot more than 1?hot day lol 😂 when do you think you will get used to our weather?
"Those are definitely the cows that chased me". haahhahaha .We have cows in a pasture near us. My son and I brought them apples and they run for their lives from us! We live in California.... figures!
I can't believe you're in jeans, sweater and hat in JULY! But, then I'm in Florida 🤷🏼♀️
Walked every day yet got lost, very funny.
