    Thank you for this comparison video! I struggle with the angled Smith machine (just started using it) because I don't know which way to face. Half the fitness videos on YT are facing one way and the other half in the opposite direction lol.

    Strange to hear that the angled “is becoming more the standard”. You mentioned the vertical Smith is better for squats and that’s what the majority of people are using the Smith for at my gym. Also you mentioned all of the adjustments you can do on the angled to get in the correct position. IMO adjustment on a vertical Smith is much easier to find that sweet spot of comfort/mind-muscle connection. I go to different gyms and if I need to use a Smith I will purposefully avoid the gyms that only have the angled version - ditto for my wife.

    I would only use vertical for any back exercises and split squats. Angles smith for shoulders, chest and squats.

    Thanks, I was bench pressing the wrong direction on the angled smith machine and it was hurting my shoulder

    Thank you! I have an angled Smith Machine in my apartment gym and have no idea how to use it. It's the only bar 😥

    Straight Smith: Squats.
    Angle: Bench press

    More demonstrations of actual use and less footage of the speaker would be helpful.

    Crazy how many people I see using an angled smith machine the wrong way

    What if you looking to do build your glutes? What type of smith machine would you recommend? I would like to do b stance squats, b stance deadlifts, frog reverse hyper, reverse lunges, basically a lot of b stance and glute and quad focused workouts.

    Is squats on an angled one necessarily bad? And which way should one face to optimally hit quads?

      I always angle my body in the bars direction. So if done correctly... you should have your heels in front of the bar and lean back. Your neck is resting on the bar.

      You could still squat on the angled smith, but you may want to also angle your body to match the rails to mimic a vertical bar path. To target quads, you could do a front squat in the smith. So bar on your anterior deltoids (in front of your neck) instead of traps (behind the neck) You could face either way, but facing out is probably easier to re-rack after!

    How would you angle your body on a completely vertical smith machine to better mimic the natural slanted bar path of the bench press? Also would I need to angle my body during incline and decline as well or is vertical okay for those, thanks.

    • @UofMRecServices
      @UofMRecServices  2 роки тому +2

      A lot of people still bench press on a vertical smith machine. Raising an end of the bench would mimic the starting position of the angled smith machine. However, the vertical bar path would make the bench press closer to an inclined or declined chest press rather than mimic a flat bench press on the angled smith.

    Hey i have a question please. What difference between forward angle smith machine vs backward angled smith machine ? In my gym we have a Nautilus backward angled smith machine, never seen that before lol

    • @UofMRecServices
      @UofMRecServices  2 роки тому +2

      That's very strange. Haven't seen that either. I suppose it would be similar, but you might have to face the opposite way or angle your body in a certain direction depending on what exercise you're doing.

    Shopping for a Smith machine right now. Not sure which to buy, straight or angled.

    • @UofMRecServices
      @UofMRecServices  2 роки тому +4

      I would go with an angled smith because it's more versatile. You can mimic the vertical bar path by angling your body.

      @@UofMRecServices thank you. The masses seem to say go with straight but more the knowledgeable minority of people like you and Jim Stoppani say angled. Definitely going with your recommendations. Used Hammer Strength Smith machine it is!

    Applying an angle to any squat is called bad form and will apply additional shear to knees and lumbar. Somehow, trainers convinced a few gullible manufacturers that since they themselves are unfamiliar with biomechanics their clients are easiest taught poor form in a tilt ROM.

    • @UofMRecServices

      “If you were moving free weight, angled force during a squatting movement would be very dangerous. The moment arm of the weight would increase through the range of motion creating lots of shear force. Although the weight is moving at an angle, the bar being encased and sliding along the rails reduces vertical component of the force. Aligning your body to match the angle of the rods allows you to simulate a vertical path without additional shear/torque like you would moving a free weight at an angle. It’s similar to plate loaded leg presses or hack squats. There is still a horizontal component to the force applied to the floor and the associated ground reaction forces that would be applied to the ankles and maybe up to the knees. With most angled smith machines being 7-12 degrees, the horizontal component of the ground reaction forces is between 7 and 12% so that is something to take into consideration. It also helps to have feet placed slightly forward to reduce shear forces in the knees. If you want to further reduce shear forces in the lumber spine, the hack squat would be ideal because most have back support and is aligned with the path of the weight so all the loading of the lumbar spine is axial loading. Hack squat would also eliminate the horizontal component of ground reaction forces because of the angled foot platform.”

    which do you suggest for deadlift?

    • @UofMRecServices
      @UofMRecServices  Рік тому

      Probably vertical! The ideal bar path for deadlift is a straight line so the vertical smith is probably the best fit.

    Honestly it makes zero difference Your workout should be based around free weights with a smith machine a close second. Angles or not means nothing
