- So I have been getting this question a lot. How can I build my legs if i can't squat. You might not be able to squat for many reasons. Let me be the first person to tell you that will not be an issue with this no squat leg workout. I did this leg workout last week and I was sore for 10 days. Give this crazy no squat leg workout a try and let me know how sore you got the next day.

John, if people have back problems they should be using the seated leg curl machine not the lying leg curl machine.Lying leg curl machines are more harmful on the back than squats or deadlifts.
@@dennis85573 ive had a messed up lower back for about 2 years and it doesnt bother my back at all if anything my back feels better after doing them cause it helps me stretch out my back, if it hurts someones back then surely its cause they are ego lifting on it, if anything the seated one is the one that irritates my lower back and when laying doing them there is no strain on my back ist all in my legs and glutes
@@martinbradley1062 According to physiotherapists, for the majority of lifters with bad backs it's the other way around. This also applies to my personal experience.Believe me I don't ego lift.If it works for you that's great keep doing it the way you're doing it.
Hello there mountaindog1, im trying today your style of leg workout. Wow it’s awesome. Thank you for showing us how it’s done
Really enjoyed the video,, however i have to say you was making me wince with your locked legs on the pendulum 😬
1)warm up with leg extensions : sets of 6 reps, ramp up weight by one plate after every 6 reps till you can't get 6 anymore
2)leg extensions : pick up from where you left off in (1), shoot for 25 reps, rest pause, style, get outta the machine during breaks
3)back supported leg press movement : pick a weight that you can do 10-12 reps with and shoot for 25 reps, rest pause style, don't get outta the machine during breaks, lockout and rest
4)3 sets of lunges for about 25 yards
5)leg curls : 2*10
Third set : 10 reps, 10 partials from bottom, 15-20 second iso hold
Go away, we’re suppose to watch for more gains
@@TyB-BT lol
doing this in about 45 minutes, will report back
okay, i did leg press as 2nd movement and almost died, shit was really intense, great workout, last set of leg curls got my legs trembling like a boxer who got rocked by a counter lmao
Thats me needing a wheel chair the morning after..doms from hell. Wish me luck
Can you use single leg vertical leg press in place of hack squat and just alternate legs?
I’ll be doing this today for you, John. Might I actually say that I loved this man.. tears keep falling, but I gotta keep going. Thank you for everything you’ve taught me, John. I will forever put it to good use. Thank you a million. Rest easy, mountain dog.
This was one where I was genuinely sad. Most of the time you feel something for these deaths but this one hit me a bit different. I feel for his wife and his kids. Really sucks. I know what it’s like to grow up without a dad and so did John and it was his greatest fear. And it happened. It actually made me reflect on my own “bodybuilding choices” and really consider what I put in my body because my greatest fear is also leaving my little boy without his dad and best friend.
Nice message. I agree and right there with ya. 🙏😇
@@Jay-hp6pu beautiful message brother i salute you 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿 i wish u all well brother i can relate heavy

That “HI EVERYBODY” hits different now that your gone!! We miss you, but you live on in all of us. Blessings!!!!!
John I only discovered you after your death. Didn't even realize you passed till recently, yet you've helped me expand my training program so much and feel like I know you even in death. Continue motivating and helping people from beyond the grave my friend!

Same here went to thank him the other day in the comments after watching his video's for almost 3 months just to see the first comment thanking his family for keep his legacy alive. Rest in paradise big guy you are making the world stronger even after death.
The single set of 25 makes a ton of sense. Especially after pre-exhaustion. Guaranteed to make those legs grow. Great video as usual.
It’s been my go to and I swear my legs are so pumped after I could just stop there.
Gunna try this on my next session, might start with the 15 reps tho and see how immobilised I am the next day 🤣

There are certain people in this world that should live far beyond our typical life expectancy... John is one of them. His attitude, demeanor, work ethic and kindness are all exemplary.
Oh boy. This aged terribly. Rip john
@@jamisonbernhardt3310 yeah this didn't age very well
@@jamisonbernhardt3310 well his spirit and knowledge will live on forever as he was kind enough to share his knowledge. R.I.P. to a legend.
@@jamisonbernhardt3310 Did it? I mean he died so the timing is ironic, but "this didn't age well" would be more appropriate if it turned out John WASN'T actually a nice guy. Regardless of whether or not he did, the point still stands that he "deserved" a long life, as he was a good man.
@@CatfishBradley he gave us all wonderful advice
Only been training for about 6 months. Just recently found this channel. Sad to hear John is no longer with us. RIP John. Did this workout today, WOW! Really good. Learning so much from all his videos. Thoughts goes to his family.
Same here, just discovered him. He really was a breath of fresh air compared to the rest of fitness advice. Him and mind pump are the best i have found. Rip good sir.

I've seen massive gains in the last month since starting this. Absolutely awesome. It started off all fun and games, now its a brutal experience every time I need to train legs. Then found he passed - RIP and thank you for the knoedge 🙌
Who passed?
He passed
So young as well
Rest in Peace good man and beautiful soul
Him locking out his knees on the pendulum squat was giving me anxiety. Lol
you can lock out, just dont slam your knees into place
@@emanuels2475
You're supposed to move at the ankle not the knees for calf raises, mate.
Tanner Wise me too 😬😬😱😱
@@emanuels2475 He did suggest keeping the knees locked out all the time for calf raises in his "21 reasons your legs won't grow video" (I think)
God damn it! I felt the exact same way watching that. Dudes legs were bowing inwards at full lock out and was balanced only on his heels, 😬 scary looking asf!
I literally did not do squats today bc of hip issues and was wondering what I could've done and here this man posts a video of it...
I'm blessed to be able to squat fine, and we're ALL blessed to have John Meadows dropping all this knowledge.
Can you get big legs without having to train legs? I'm asking for a friend.
haha!
@ItsStillRealToMe DamnIt Exactly. Samoans can gain 10kg muscle just walking past gym on way to maccas!
Yes, actually.
Once your upper body accrues muscle beyond it's capacity it begins to push the muscles into the lower limbs to allow more room for upper body hypertrophy.
You can even get big legs without having legs
Try bicycling
62 year old natty (been doing it forever) Yeah, I didn't listen and did it 3 times. Haven't been able to do legs for a week and a half :) Wow!
Thanks for staying natty brother, keep it up big dawg WOOF WOOF
John, I love you man. I’m doing this split today for you. We will miss you
Never had a crazier pump in 30 min in my entire life
right!
Now need a video for people with torn meniscus and severe arthritis in both knees!
I cannot remember the last time I didn't start a Leg Workout with the Lying Hamstring Curl... my knees just wanted to thank you John ;)
40 seconds into the video I already know this is gonna help me, I tend to shy away from leg day because I get so embarassed at how little weight I can squat because the pain that I get in my knees is unbearable. Thank you Mr Meadows 🤝
That just means you’re doing squats wrong outside of any actual injury you’ve had.
God bless you my friend. You’ve left a legacy behind you and you’ve made the world a better pace with all your work and passion.
RIP John, thanks for all the videos. I learned so much thanks to you.
My wife and I did this workout yesterday and my quads are destroyed this morning. I haven’t been this sore in my legs in recent memory. Unbelievable.
how's your wife?

Rest in peace John, This workout helped me a lot.
Looking great, John! Super solid video, as always. I’m 38 and I also avoid heavy squats these days, for general fear of getting hurt, and needed some alternate exercises to develop growth. Thanks man, and keep the content coming! Hope you and your family and safe and happy.
This is a man of all man , John was a big influence in my life . At 60 years old and half of my back removed and total left hip replacement .I wanted to get back into body building .I looked up many different builders .I found Mr meadows and kept watching his videos. .I watched other guys but John Neadows is the man I chose because he is a man for the people and knot about himself as I had found in many others .
I love the humble yet technical approach you take to training education.
Just in time for leg day. John You're the man.
Hey John, recently Ive came across your videos on youtube and this one has really changed my overall experience with training legs. I have always done legs once a week with a heavy barbell squats day and struggled to make them grow. I now try my best to hit legs twice a week one day being my traditional barbell squat day and the other using this method/workout. Its been about a month now of doing this consistently and I can already see amazing results. Between the added volume and pre-exhaustion this routine offers it has been making a huge difference. Just wanted to say thank you for this awesome advice!
Not only was this man crazy knowledgeable but so humble. When he said I made a mistake with the 2 sets really scuppering the essential recovery, it is in stark contrast to the gym bros who say 'I trained my legs so hard on Monday I couldn't squat down to take a shit, also I trained chest so hard on sunday i wouldn't have been able to wipe my arse anyway and it rocks man'. As I have got older learned exactly what John knew, train hard sure but know when to back off. Was carrying a niggling injury in my lower back and another wise coach said take time off training anything involving lower back in fact take a week off period and do some sensible mobility. Better to take a week of voluntarily than being forced to take 6 months
Just tried this workout. Super efficient in terms of time and amount of hard reps. Took about 45-50 mins including adding in your calf workout. Really enjoyed it. I'll be interested to see how the DOMS are in the next couple of days. Thanks a lot!! 😬
If I had legs like John I would wear shorter shorts, especially when training. Show off those legs. 👍
You work hard enough for legs like that. Dedication, discipline. Show them off. 👍
I agree!! Over the last two decades or so, men's thighs have become something to hide!! You should have seen us gym kids in the 70's and 80's - we wore short shorts!!
@@Leftatalbuquerque thats awesome!
Like Mike Tyson back in the 80s. Short shorts look fruity on most men, but Tyson made it look tough.

I just keep finding gold on your channel, John! I hurt my shoulder a few months ago and quit doing barbell squats. This is the video I needed. Looks like a killer workout. I wrote it all down and can't wait to try it!
Great Guy RIP as I'm here using the legpress machine. All your videos have been inspirational.
You're the man John... sad that you had to leave this world... but your videos still making in impact on guys like me getting back in to gym. Great advice, easy to follow and just plain good stuff !!
Did this workout today, absolutely awesome! Best leg pump I've ever had! Not for the faint of heart, that's for sure. Thanks John!!
Always knew John’s work but as I’ve got more into fitness I’ve watched a tonne of his videos and wow. What a guy and such knowledge, plus a genuine family man. Rest In Power, thanks for inspiring the next generation 👊
Always made me so pumped to workout after watching your videos. Honest, humble, and kind. Much respect RIP
I love that leg extension, rest pause technique . Been doing it for years . Hopefully if gyms ever open again in New York I’ll get back at it.
What!? Are gyms still closed in NYC? OMG real hard man.
ANtr431 5 months brother . I mainly miss legs at the gym . I have dumbbells and bands , and been able to destroy everything pretty well. It’s just not the same with legs though .

This is fantastic, just tried it yesterday, precisely what I needed. I also realised that I pretty much stopped checking other fitness channels, I get everything I could possibly need here, and more. Thanks for the amazing content!
I did this workout the other day. Now this is the kinda leg workout I have been looking for. My legs where so pumped. Thanks a ton John for showing us this.
Just completed this. The pump was amazing. I liked how it really put the focus on the targeted muscles. I was almost cramping on the leg curls. 👍🏻
Been loving the clusters lately. The intensity's built in: follow instructions and the pain follows. Doesn't take the mental toughness, seems to me, it takes to make straight sets hard.
messed up my lower back last time i squatted, taking a break and doing rehab on it as i wait for my first inzer powerlifting belt. this video came at just the right time. THANKS!!!
Thank you for posting this! I am prone to get hernias and deadlifts/squats hurt a lot. So this will let me work out my legs with comfort now!
John, great workout. I've been having growth success with pointing my toes on leg curls to build the lower hamstrings. Totally different feel and growth in a weaker part of my legs that I needed for side poses.
Growth protocol has been 4 sets 20, 15,15,12. Tempo 2:1:3. 5th set is a triple drop 10,10,10. Holy smokes the pump is unreal.
Love this type of leg training! Because of shoulder injuries, scar tissue and frozen shoulders I havent been able to squat for over 10 years...Almost all was lost until I read some of Trevor Smith's old Beyond Failure training routine articles.Pre exhaust with isolation then pick either leg press or hack squats...Kept all the size on my quads after using this routine and dumping squats.Like Trevor I pre exhaust all muscle groups before compound exercises..If the muscle is taken to failure (or beyond) it doesnt matter if you use machines or free weights.
I am so gutted that I found this channel after he passed. It validates my whole training thoughts.
RIP big man, wish I'd met you sooner.
I keep going through this man's quality videos frequently now and only recently have I stumbled upon the channel.. sad to know he passed away, hope he rests easy
Dorian Yates would certainly approve of this video
Sometimes, I imagine DY's trainer yelling at me to get 1 more rep.
My two Thighs put together, are still no way near as large as one of Johns, God dang. Goals.....damn Johns a machine!! 👍
Mate Johns calves are bigger than my thighs.
As always you present the exercises in a totally professional manner without the BS you hear on UA-cam! .. True experience shines .... thanks for the excellent optional leg workout here!
Thank you John. I really appreciate these videos of yours. As a middle aged lifter, I especially appreciate the consideration given to joint and lower back health. With respect to that; it has been my experience that the belt squat is another good alternative to the barbell squat.
Doing this for leg day today. Thanks John, RIP ❤
Haha, I love your logic on the ham curls. 'Ah, we'll do... 20 seconds, that'll hurt'
Only just discovered this channel this week. Learnt so much already. Thank you.
I tried this at the gym today on the leg press and leg extension and the pain was glorious. On the last reps I saw the white light. It was brutal and I was walking funny for awhile after. Thank you so much John Meadows! I wish you all the best in the future with your health challenges and look forward to learning much more from you.

I’ve been doing this leg routine for about a month now and I just wanna say it has helped tremendously with my legs, I used to hate leg day and I’m still not too fond of it but this is a really good workout and I have definitely seen growth in my legs
I’m about to add this workout in my program and see how I do.
How frequently are you supposed to do this workout? How long should it take? Thanks
@@paulpetrovich8779 it depends on your workout routine. Usually 2 times a week for programs like PPL or 1 x a week for bro splits. This will take more or less an hour
progress now?
I had an accident and couldn’t lift for 18 months I’d just do legs presses 3 times a week but man my legs got big and strong!!
Please tell me more about your diet as well did uh gain muscle or fat🥲 I'm in need
@@rituchoudhary8428 At the time I lost some of my upper body muscle mass because I just couldn't train it!
I had to cut down my overall calorie intake but I kept my protein intake high, close to 1gram of protein per (lean) pound of body weight.
For protein supplements I used 50% Whey and 50% Egg White powder, it's what Frank Zane used (perhaps still uses)! The whey is quick release and the egg white is slow release.
If you're wanting to gain muscle you have to eat a calorific surplus most days. You will gain some fat but if you do it cleanly hopefully not too much. It really is 60% diet and 40% training. Good luck!

I Know this amazing guy is gone 😢But I want to thank his family or friend for keeping his videos going, I am learning a lot from him and slowly changing my life ❤
I cheated on reps just watching the video. Great content as always.
New favorite leg workout- short but still effective volume, extreme intensity without being so long that it’s mentally exhausting, and not an iota of back pain- I threw some hip thrusts and abductor/adductor work in too and was still done in an hour.
If you see this John, would you recommend doing some additional lower back training like hypers in to compensate for the lost stimulus from having to sacrifice squats and deads as someone with chronic back issues?
Awesome, I had a question about this same thing on a livestream a few months back and my legs have grown like crazy since, super happy to see a full video on it!!! 😁
Glad to help!
