      Definitely always demo first brotha!
      If you do decide to pick up, consider hitting one of the sweetwater links in the description and purchasing through affiliate. helps the channel immensely, you get whatcha need at no additional cost.
      And plus they do also offer all of UAD’s bundle pricing now too.
      Let me know whatcha think of the studer after the demo. Cheers!

    While this is only the 2nd video I see on your channel, I must say I see a bright future for it.
    Most definitely deserving of WAY more than 10K subs....
    By the way, what plugin within the UADx can be used to widen my mix on the master bus?
    Thanks again

      @TheSteveKinney  Рік тому +1

      Thanks so much!!
      FIY - there isn’t currently any sort of stereo field wideners in the X category yet.
      You COULD kinda use the studio d plugin to some degree - but it’s not really gonna be what you’re looking for.
      I know there are tons of offerings out there - as far as UAD branded ones - the Bx master desk has some of those features - but you can get it from plugin alliance for a non accelerated version.
      Hope this helps! Cheers!

    This vs the Tape Oxide?
    Who wins, where, when, and why?

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 місяці тому

      They both sound great.
      Generally, speaking - oxide is a set and forget, that’s easy, and subtle, and sells the tape sound.
      Also generally, that’s my approach with all of the tape stuff. You shouldn’t “hear it”.
      The studer is wayyy more detailed overall, you can calibrated it, you can fuss with it, and also, sounds a lot more pleasant when you do wanna dial it up over the top.

      @@TheSteveKinney cool, thanks!
      I ended up buying both. Perhaps I can use them on different tracks in the same song.

    Great video Steve! There's currently a UAD sale and this happens to be one of the plugins available to get, trying to figure out if this is worth it. I can see that the one people like is the Ampex, the Studer seems to be more subtle. I'm still confused about it's application, I saw some use it as the first insert of their DAW channels, and some on busses too, I wonder what's the best way to use it? I can see how using it on each channel can work, but if I starting using busses, they'll now be two Studer A800 plugins processing the channel? Is that the way?
    I know this question is a bit subjective, but forgive me for being cliche, I'm looking to add some "analog mojo in my music".

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  Рік тому +1

      Truthfully, it’s a tad over thought here.
      The atr and studar are both highly colorful. If you through one of the studars on every channel you’d have a massive impact but it’s all just creative.
      No real rules.
      I personally love using this on busses and even the master bus. It’s a great sounding tape sim.
      You could certainly put it across every channel as well. And then use an atr on the master bus. That would be fun.
      There are no rules.
      But this plugin does sound great!

      @TheSteveKinney  Рік тому

      hmmmm... does the preset menu pop out at all in Ableton?

  • @TransistorLSD
    @TransistorLSD Рік тому +1

    3:27 No offense, but is it possible to gainstage presets? I think it's tricky since it depends on the input material...

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  Рік тому +1

      Sorry - but I disagree.
      It’s gain staged for whatever the source level is.
      So... if I crank the shit outta the input gain but I don’t compensate the output - then I haven’t gained staged the preamp.
      Basically - I can’t control source level - but I CAN control all internal moves.
      And I spent a bunch of time building these presets so that loudness doesn’t trick you into thinking it sounds better.
      It’s not gain staging your initial signal level...

    • @TransistorLSD
      @TransistorLSD Рік тому +1

      @@TheSteveKinney Well yeah, maybe you can gain-stage roughly, but i'm pretty sure manual fine-tuning will be still needed most of the time, especially with compressors and heavy saturation... At least for me, i can't tolerate even 2dB of volume change. Anyway, great video, thanks!

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  Рік тому +1

      @@TransistorLSD I mean - the point still stands.
      Gain staging is making whatever goes in - the same loudness on the way out.
      It’s not hitting an arbitrary db level.
      So. Again - they are gainstaged. Meaning that if you turn on the preset - it shouldn’t jump your volume or make it super quiet. It should stay wherever you initial had your signal level. That’s gain staging.
      Ya gotta be careful with some presets - they add volume and this can trick your ears. I find it a lot on plugin presets that are included by manufacturers.

    • @TransistorLSD
      @TransistorLSD Рік тому +1

      @@TheSteveKinney Yes, but it's tricky with compressors and heavy saturation. Let's say you made your compressor preset with input material hitting -6dBFS and you set threshold accordingly, so the compressor does 12dB of gain reduction, obviously you set makeup gain to compensate those 12dB after.
      But then someone loads this preset on a track that hits at -24dBFS, then compressor does zero gain reduction and track suddenly becomes 12dB louder because of the makeup gain you set earlier. Same with heavy saturation.
      So no matter how you tweak some presets, you can't make them 100% gain staged in all scenarios.

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  Рік тому +1

      @@TransistorLSD yup - 100%
      It’s also mentioned in my manual where the different signal types are expected to be hitting in the presets as well.🥸😎
      I’m not at all trying to pull the wool over anyone, be misleading, or sell any snake oil as you say.
      Mostly just offering a way for supporters to get a little something in return for showing support to the channel.
      There are MANY others out there that DO practice this kind of behavior. I pride myself on not being one of them.
      You’re not wrong, but - I made sure to prepare and guide users for this exact thing so that it’s NOT snake oil and that it’s actually useful. Etc.
      That said - thanks for sharing the point of view and also for helping anyone else who may not be aware of this topic! It’s not often talked about until you get deep down the production rabbit hole like we’ve both done LOL
      Thanks again!
      Cheers brotha man!

    Hey Steve
    Do you like the UAD Ampex or Studer on the 2 buss?
    What do think it’s actually doing? Light compression and a little brightening ?

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  Рік тому

      Ampex. Fo show.
      I like the studer on guitars and bass.
      Both are doing very similar things but with slightly different nuances.
      Both are:
      Slight compression
      Modeled eq based off of each unit which is also user calibrated if you wanna change it
      And finally harmonic distortion
      (Again, modeled off the units and able to be dialed in)
      I like my models to be as true as possible to the real units, and then I just drive them harder or lighter depending on what kind of color I want.

    • @davidmaraisthecampfireguit2596
      @davidmaraisthecampfireguit2596 Рік тому +1

      I tend to use the Studer for tracking/recording, and then I place the Ampex on the mixbus for final 2-buss mixdown, placed just before the limiter.

    • @TransistorLSD
      @TransistorLSD Рік тому

      With Studer brightness depends on the tape formulas, speed and HF bias. Sometimes it can make things way darker, not brighter, even with all the harmonics added in. Can't speak for the Ampex, i don't have it.
