  • Ultimate Direction Ultra Vest 6.0 Review. My first ever proper running hydration vest was the Ultimate Direction AK mountain vest. One of the main reasons I bought it was because Anton Krupicka was my ultra running hero and this was his signature running vest. Unfortunately it didn't make me perform like him and it definitely didn't make me look as cool as him but I did enjoy running with it. However this was many years ago and I haven't run in one of their hydration vests since. I also can't believe that Ultimate Direction haven't featured on the channel before! So, when they reached out and asked if I'd like to test and review their new and updated Ultra Vest 6.0, I jumped at the chance and here are my thoughts.
    Thanks for watching, we'll see you in the next video and as always - stay safe and keep on running!

    Loyd you won me over at "Bromance" with Anton, the guy is to cool for school. I hear where you are coming from. I did ask if you where doing an in depth review but, Mate you smashed it 👍 Looks like a pretty much bomb proof vest for long or short days. On the buy list me thinks. Cheers Loyd. Regarding the lockable valves, Salomon do offer lockable flask caps as an aftermarket option. They're a different design which involves twisting the lid itself which is split into two parts. I replaced all my Salomon flask caps with them as I often need to carry additional flasks in the back of my pack and the lockable caps prevent them leaking out everywhere.

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  Рік тому +1

      I've seen there lockable caps Sam but Salomon need to work them in to the flasks that come with heir vests, rather than making us pay extra if we want to use them 👍

    I'm still looking for a review/video that shows the way that the poles are supposed to be strapped to the front. UD has changed their system and nobody seems to know how it works because they just totally disregard it in all of their reviews.

    Put small kitchen / office rubber bands around front straps. Wrapp it around itself in loops 2x / 3x and than put strap through the rubber loops. It will keep the end of strap tightened. You can roll the band over the strap by your fingers.
    I hope that manufacturer will do it in next model for every excess end of strap

      I agree, I love my Salomon quiver! It did take a bit of getting used to / practice (and I agree that loosening the toggle at the back is essential to getting the poles to slide back in easily - and remembering to tighten it again once they are back in!). But I now find it quick and easy to use.

  • @kalleleman
    @kalleleman 3 місяці тому +1

    Maybe they've fixed that, but the soft flasks on my ud vest are a really tight fit. Quite a hastle if you wanna refill them and put them back on the go. They have a seam that sits outside the bottle and that seams to get in the way. Mine is the ud race vest 5.0

    • @bb4prelude73

      The 6.0 does have more space

  • @craigbarth7474
    @craigbarth7474 Рік тому +1

    Not sure why but I've gravitated more towards the UD vests over the years - Also AK signature vests 😀 Currently I have the PB Adventure Vest 3.0 for bigger days when I need more storage. Mountain Vest 3.0 - love the big stuff pocket and bungy compression system on the rear + the multiple zip (secure) pockets so you can always quickly find what you need, this is my favourite pack I would buy again if it was available and in my opinion better than my Mountain vest 5.0 other than the front pole elastics, but I prefer zip pockets so it's a shame this has fewer than my other vests... General comments - Lighter is not always better and certainly not more durable and longer lasting which has me nervous re the MV 5.0 especially the fit system so saving for races! The UD bladder straps are crap and the press studs crap out. I like to carry poles up front but vests are picky which poles and the UD vests seem to work best with the Black Diamond carbon Zs (definitely don't work with Dynafit Pros which I'm pretty underwhelmed by in general). Love having multiple UD bottles so I can carry an additional in the rear stuff pocket if necessary or have one pre filled (dry or full if supported) with energy mix for aid stations to quickly swap out - efficiency saves time even if I'm not a super fast runner ;-)

      Thanks for the review! I'm currently a Salomon Adv Skin user and I am happy with that vest in general. However, I think it has one annoying flaw. The soft flasks are so hard to get back into their pockets, especially if you have stuff in the mesh pockets. It does appear as if the UD 6.0 is much better in that perspective. Is this correct?

    • @craigbarth7474
      @craigbarth7474 15 днів тому +1

      @@MrOnerider Yeah I have the Adv skin 12 too... My issues with it are: same issue with flasks and the front mesh pockets, also often squirt myself in the eye trying to get them in due to no sealing mechanism, not enough zip pocket options and stuff falls out of the side ones too easily, no outer stuff pocket or bungys on the back, small pockets above the flasks are useless, waste bag? flip over thing is fiddly and I always end up poking stuff between the bag n the pocket so it falls on the floor, anything in the lower rear through pocket just becomes a sweat sponge ie the only real place for a rain jacket and it ends up being wet and stinky before you even put it on, vest overall runs warmer.

  • @melaniebailey3446
    @melaniebailey3446 Рік тому

    Hi Lloyd, what interests me about this UD vest is the ability to slide the soft flasks in more easily than the Salomon 12. Am I missing something though with the Salomon vest? I can’t seem to get full soft flasks into the pockets without taking it off and ‘jiggling’ them down?! 🤔

    • @ianl4518
      @ianl4518 Рік тому +1

      I'm a big fan of Salomon vests but have found on my Adv Skin 12 that the material overlaps the bottles sometimes. As for getting the bottles in easily, I've found the trick is to push the bottle in with one hand but use your other hand to pull the top of the stuff pocket underneath outwards.
      IME, it's the bottom of the bottle, catching on the edge of the stuff pocket that prevents it going down all the way.

    • @melaniebailey3446

      @Run4Adventure  Рік тому +2

      I find if you start the bottle off and then slightly jump up and down, the weight of the water slides it down into the pocket 👍
      Also Ian is right, sometimes the stuff pocket under the bottle pocket can get in the way, especially if you've got kit in it. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏😊

    Great review. For me those zip pockets in the back would be a no go, Salomon's solution is superior. The biggest drawback of the UD flasks to me is that they aren't water filter compatible (Katadyn Befree or Salomon XA filter).

      I never use a filter on my flasks so that doesn't really bother me. I've actually got an electronic emergency whistle that gives out a 120db whistle and a 2000 lumens strobe light so I wouldn't use the vest whistle in an emergency anyway 😊
