    At last! A simple, uncomplicated, and. brilliant explanation of cooking rice for one using pot in pot! I wish I’d come across your video 2 days ago, it would’ve saved me about 12 hours of trawling! Thank you. I have a ninja foodi, but the pip method still works and I use 250ml water in the bottom.

    Despite having had an IP. For getting for 5 years I still prefer to do rice in the microwave. I use a microwave steamer. It is much quicker and just as good as the IP.

    Great info, many thanks, but in the UK and Europe we use metric. How big is your cup?

    • @CookingandCalm
      @CookingandCalm  10 місяців тому

      Hi there, yes I'm in the UK but I've moved to using cups for things like rice and porridge as I only have to remember the ratio to water then. I try to put in grams too but for some reason I've forgotten here. I've just moved house and my measuring cups are in storage so I can't check right now but hopefully you've found the answer from another cook by now- so sorry. I use Joseph and Joseph measuring cups in case that helps.👍

      Hi there, thanks for reminding me. It's the Jospeh and Joseph Small Prep and Serve Bowl - mine is the small one and I got it from a 'real world' cookshop some years ago. They seem to have discontinued it as I'm struggling to find a link but I've put the amazon link for the large version in the description now so you can see it at least.

    • @CookingandCalm
      @CookingandCalm  Рік тому

      Hi Maria, I tend to cook it for 18m and 10 Natural release. I find brown basmati really varies so either 1:1 or 1 :1.25 (1 cup rice : 1.25 cup water/stock) depending on how soft you like it.

    I would be looking for something without silicone/olastic.
    Both are similar in how they're made, and despite claims, do contain chemicals which leech into food at high temperatures.
    Which in the case of a pressure cooker is extremely high.
    In this case the silicone is still coming into contact with the rice, in the form of precipitation

    So knowing what your minimum water/liquid fill is for pressure cooking in your model of Instant Pot is super important to get the best out of your cooking. Let's try and save some time for each other by sharing the minimums for our models. Loved this video. Delighted to find a uk instant pot user with ‘normal’ easy to find ingredients. I looked at my new instant pot for a couple of weeks before using, getting a burn notice after only a few goes, so I was a tad intimidated. I’m getting braver but your channel will undoubtedly help me.
    My instant pot has a tiny silver spot thru the grey element is in the base this ok? or is it on its way out.
    Thank you ❤

      @CookingandCalm  Рік тому

      Glad it was helpful Belinda. If you think I can help with anything do give me a shout either here or via my website contact form (see about section) or join the newsletter. Burn notice happens to all of us so don't worry at all. You get used to it and once you understand the common causes it doesn't happen much at all. It won't hurt anything, just tougher on the washing up :)
      The grey element: I don't know as I'm not part of Instant Pot itself - I would take a photo and send it to them via their instantbrands.co.uk/contact-us/ which creates a ticket. They can be slow and this is the best route I've found for any questions.

    I have the Instant Pot Ultra. Not sure why my preset for rice says 12 minutes, but it dried out the rice I put in on the bottom with the water. I have change it to cook in pressure cook at 6 minutes and it is still a little dry. Good for sticky rice though.

    • @CookingandCalm
      @CookingandCalm  Рік тому +1

      My old manual says minimum liquid for that one is 500 mL
      (*Unless otherwise specified in recipe). 12 minutes is a very long time for white rice - the presets can be really odd. Yes keep experimenting until you are happy 👍

      @@CookingandCalm you're very welcome. It's true. And I hope you have a good weekend too. By the way, I ruined my rice. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm 58 years old and have been making rice my entire life. The last five batches I've made I've thrown out. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

    • @CookingandCalm
      @CookingandCalm  11 місяців тому +1

      oh that's so annoying. Hey, maybe it's not you! Do you think it could be the rice itself? Sometimes the rice is very old from sitting on shop shelves or has different absorbency? If you think it's the instant pot method, you could try a little more or a little less water:rice ratio? Also if you are at higher altitude that affects pressure cooking. Or for us, we have very hard water here and chock full of limescale and sometimes very chlorine heavy 🤢 - all of that can cause problems too. Some things are just a lottery in cooking so be kind to yourself and keep experimenting - I'm sure that rice mojo will come back :)

  • @rgruenhaus
    @rgruenhaus Рік тому +6

    You didn't say, but you should turn off the KEEP WARM mode. It's more important if it's not a pot in pot method and the rice is on the bottom and can burn or dry out!

    • @reincarnatedmosquito
      @reincarnatedmosquito Рік тому +1

      @@CookingandCalm i think its constant experiment with rice and water and cooking time. Too much water over cook. Too less water rice gets stick to bottom.
      Key is using same rice and right down every time and how aldente (rice do not stick to each other).
      Taste is Texture. Texture is taste.
      We like bread because of many texture in them.
