  • Instead of presidents or admirals, an African American enlisted sailor - a hero during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor - will be honored when the USS Doris Miller is christened. David Martin talks with Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly, who broke with tradition to name the next Navy aircraft carrier after an enlisted man, and with relatives of Doris "Dorie" Miller, who was not initially recognized for his valor on that "Day of Infamy."

      I must modify my response. Indeed, some carriers are named after battles, such as the Saratoga, and some after prior ships, as the Wasp (although the current Wasp is really an amphibious assault ship). For persons, the proper ships are destroyers, One exception was the Nimitz class carriers. Face it, this individual, no matter what he allegedly did at Pearl, is not in the slightest the same as Nimitz.
      Does it matter? Indeed it does. Naval tradition is vital, and must not be subject to political correctness. Name a destroyer after him, that's fine, but NOT a carrier.

And it's not like he didn't received any recognition for his bravery, there was at least one ship {a destroyer} named after him before.
      What you're advocating for is nothing but "affirmative action" move so, basically, he'll be a namesake for a CVN because he happen to be black, not because he deserves such honor more than other possible candidates. @Sunny Quackers Everyone on the ship had training. Except the working folks who were predominantly blacks, and unlike the army which had segregated units, the Navy couldn't have separate ships.
      I'm black. I wouldn't name the ship after one guy in a low ranking position. I would just call it USS Pearl Harbor. BUT this guy did achieved notoriety (back then blacks enlisted on ships were assigned working roles because of Jim Crow laws), leaping into the battle and carrying wounded sailors. This guy was awarded with the Navy Cross medal by General Nimitz of all people, on a deck of a ship in 1942. An unheard of event for a man of his background.
      Still, I wouldn't call an entire carrier after him. Maybe a battleship.

      I too come from Waco and have no problems with Doris Miller. However, he did nothing on the 7th of December that hundreds of other sailors and marines did. He manned a gun and returned fire. He was awarded the Navy Cross so that the Navy could use him to recruit more blacks. A poster boy to show others that here's a black man who became a hero and you can too.
      Does he deserve any of this ? Doris miller was hero who served his country honorably. But his actions did not rise up to the criteria in which the Navy Cross is generally awarded and the naming of this ship for him is a little bit too much as well.

    About damn time they stopped naming all the new carriers after politicians.
    Carriers used to be named after previous famous ships like Enterprise and Hornet or after battles like Yorktown. I don’t have a problem with long dead political figures who were truly great like Lincoln or Washington. But I do not think recent often living politicians like Reagan, Carter, Ford, or Bush should have a capital ship named after them.

      Funny being that Congressional Medals of Honor have been given to men who have actually disregarded their own safety and even orders to defend their fellow soldiers and sailors. He was under no standing orders to defend the ship. In fact, he had standing orders (as did all black sailors at the time) not to defend the ship. He did not evacuate the ship when he could've. He took up a post that wasn't his and fought. He was denied honor which would have been bestowed upon because of racism. More than than, he fought despite the disrespect his country paid to him.
      Aircraft Carriers haven't always been named after presidents. The Navy has a tradition of naming Carriers for Naval personnel and revolutionary war events. Forrestal and Nimitz were also naval nersonnel. Carl Vinson was named after a congressman who never served in the US armed forces. The John C. Stennis was named for a senator who also never served. Yorktown, Princeton,Valley Forge were historical places of the revolutionary war. Kitty Hawk was a place of historical note to aviation.
      How quickly the Presidential presidence falls apart.

I've read some things about Audie Murphy and I didn't know if Dorie Miller was fortunate in this respect, but Audie Murphy survived the war of course but his family and friends said he suffered horribly with PTSD for the remainder of his life until he died in 1968.

      "And don't forget about "The Tuskegee Airmen!!".........Seriously? The Tuskegee air-boys were a drop in the bucket compared to other allied squadron's / pilot's records in the European Theater. Contrary to afrocentric propaganda, the area of operations in Europe where they did their missions was pretty much void of the Luftwaffe and the Regia Aeronautica ie AXIS Aircraft. That's why they never lost a bomber when they escorted them on their missions; no aerial opponents or threats. There was both a British and Russian Pilot that were both aces who by themselves each had more aerial kills than all of the red-tail boys combined. Same goes in the Pacific Theater where non-black pilots and squadrons made "your ebony heroes" look like flight school trainees. Too Bad that "amerika" these days has deliberately forgotten and thrown away their European and Russian Roots in-favor of "diversity - multiculturalism and revised & fabricated histories. Lets face it; since the1960s, America has done more to "Divide / Polarize & Conquer" itself to death than any enemy nation and power could ever have hoped for.

If you weren't here fighting in our army he and his parents would be living in huts being ruled by a king . To blame a time in which what went on was normal part of life is intellectually dishonest. I find that most black people lack appreciation ,understanding and awareness and disrespect what there ancestors went through in order for the modern day black person to be able to succeed.

      @GunslingerXXI The Destroyer may have the name Miller but it was not named for Dorie Miller. The DD-535 is named after James Miller.
      As for why the actions of Dorie Miller were important is that he had no training, no experience and if he had never touched that machine gun mount no one would have said or done anything about it as it wasn't his job or duty. That last part of what I said was the key as to why he should have been honored before, and it being so now. He went above and beyond his duty to help his ship and fellow sailors and in the process even downed a couple of enemy planes.

    • @rebelndirt8830
      @rebelndirt8830 4 роки тому

      @GunslingerXXI So I see. I have learned something new today. The FF-1091 has long since been sent to scrap... er sunk in an exercise... It was good of the Navy to honor him with the destroyer/frigate and also once again with the carrier.
      I have a soft spot for the carriers, as I served on 2 of them in my time with the Navy.

    • @Robert53area
      @Robert53area 4 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately his actions do not rate the medal of honor.
      His action while above and beyond the call of duty he had received AA training and went to naval gunnery school.
      But his actions A did not have a single handed outcome of a battle.
      2, did not save lives while maintaining his own composure. While yes probably did save lives he did not put himself in direct harm's way to do so.
      The two classifications required to receive the medal of honor.
      You also cannot be injured prior to saving lives.
      See the many many corpsman who received the navy cross which is the highest navy award. For this as an example. Most notable john Bradley who is in the joe Rosenthal photo of mount suribachi
      He received the navy cross because he received mortar injuries prior to treating and dragging marines to the beach.
