Damn man I don't agree with everything you said but your style of reviewing is much fun and so genius that I couldn't help but smile through out the whole video. The birds were never explained, but birds are sometimes used to detect poison in the air, and bird chirping is generally associated with danger.

Appreciate the review, in my opinion, i thought it was key that the movie was vague, we knew just as much as the characters in the movie knew. If this is happened in real life, and everyone was dying left and right, the vast majority of humanity wiped out; what are the chances you will be clued up on what is going on? Your instinct is to just survive. As for the birds, history shows that animals reactions are one of the first tail signs of dangers to come/storms brewing. Many storms chasers (back in the day) follow the behaviour of birds to detect when a storm is coming. So i liked the relevance of the birds being their eyes in the movie, since sight was reduced. Lastly, birdbox is base on a book that came out in 2014 - a unique concept before a quite place was conceived. While i appreciated both movies for their relationship with senses and family, i felt both movie was entirely different.
Love your reviews. Always looking forward to them. Much love from London xx

What do you think the symbolism of the birds are? The most I could think of was at the end where when all three were released was the MC being able to treat and appreciate her kids as an actual mother once she found a safe haven. Evident by the fact that she didn't even name them out of fear being to attached to them with the probability of them dying off pretty soon.
Some of the vagueness really harmed the movie and allowed for the writers to just make up shit or write the monster to fit the scene. Like how inconsistent the monster is. Sometimes its portrayed as a physical force other times it attacks purely physiologically. It can move leaves, attacking the car and attacking the MC and her children near the end , If it can do shit like that why couldn't it just remove the blindfolds itself, or smash windows, tip the boat. To what extent can it not enter homes? does having an opening and quickly closing it once it enters expel the monster out of the house? Some were answered through trial and error that the characters did like it can still attack even through the usage of digital information. Why does it spare some people while others just kill themselves? This question I can see being answered through analysis. Reviews I've seen say the monster is a metaphor of suppressed dark thoughts or mental health, the victims kill themselves because they can't handle it, the insane that survive embrace it, the survivors with the blindfolds are the ones that hide or avoid confronting there inner thoughts or something.

I love it when the movie wants you to figure stuff out... but this movie doesn't do that.
When a movie gives you pieces and you put them together with simple logic and decent observation, that makes the connection between you and the director grow. No Country For Old Men is a great example of this.
Bird Box on the other hand, gives you just one piece and expect you to solve the whole fricking puzzle yourself, or not to solve it at all... which doesn't make it any better.

  • @soulsimplistic
    @soulsimplistic 6 років тому +4

The creature or "presence" is unique to whoever sees it, which is why "showing the audience" would ruin the mystique. Think of Ghost Riders: "Penance Stare" (if you are into comics). This is why some people are effected differently. Humans are "born into sin" and innately 'evil". Although for THIS story, its reversed it seems. Regarding the birds: Its common knowledge that birds freak out in the presence of predators. They have been used for centuries as detection devices.

You don’t agree that books and films are different mediums, not all books can be made into a movie or that it’s a terrible film? If it’s the terrible film part then I can give objective reasons on why it’s not made very well and the results were subpar. They gave away the end within the first three minutes. We know it’s only her and the two kids. Once we knew that it took away any suspense that happened in the past; everyone is going to die except her and the kids. All that’s left for us now is how they will die and you have to be very creative as a film to make that work, it didn’t work. The characters were one dimensional and weren’t interesting at all. Sandra Bullocks character was limited to (I don’t like kids, we just went through danger down a river together and now I love kids.). That character arch was more interesting in Jurassic Park.
This story may work very well as a book but film is a sensory medium which is meant to evoke emotions. This film and it’s premise failed to do that because the source material may not work as a film or it’s wasn’t translated well.
I can provide more reasons but I think this should suffice.

For question 1. and 2. When thinking about the movie I could think of a symbolic reason for why the monster behaved the way it does to get across the themes and general message the film was trying to convey. From the reviews I've seen so far and my experience with he film this is what my conclusion is. The monster is some sort of metaphor of suppressed dark thoughts or mental health, the victims kill themselves because they can't handle it, the insane that survive embrace it, the survivors with the blindfolds are the ones that hide or avoid confronting there inner thoughts or something. And sure the symbolism side makes sense but it doesn't make much sense in terms of the motivation of the monster as a character or a crutch to carry the premise.
Some of the vagueness really harmed the movie and allowed for the writers to just make up shit or write the monster to fit the scene. Like how inconsistent the monster is. Sometimes its portrayed as a physical force other times it attacks purely physiologically. It can move leaves, attacking the car and attacking the MC and her children near the end , If it can do shit like that why couldn't it just remove the blindfolds itself, smash windows, or tip the boat. To what extent can it not enter homes? does having an opening and quickly closing it once it enters expel the monster out of the house? (how the Asian guy died the monster was already inside the house because it killed him, yet destroying the monitor somehow expelled it) Some were answered through trial and error that the characters did like it can still attack even through the usage of digital information.

The monsters look different in the eye of the victim. John M’s wife saw her mom, while Sarah Paulson saw some kind of monster. Gary was drawing different types of monsters in the house, so they don’t have a specific form. The point of not showing us the monsters is because the surviving characters couldn’t see them. Also, while there’s no explained reason why the birds can sense the monsters, Mallory knew they could when they started freaking out when fish fingers was begging to be let in. They made noise when they were interrogating Gary which was meant to be a little bit of foreshadowing. I think you missed some things while you were focused on wrapping presents

Birds have been a symbol of approaching storms, gas in mines and predators. Seeing as the extinction phenomena appeared to blow in with a wind I'm assuming birds can sense it similar to how they sense shifts in air currents/pressure etc. I'm more concerned with what happened to the dogs - no corpses and if animals not affected why no packs of feral dogs. I know, no movie thinks of every plothole.
Also the birds are a metaphor for Sandra Bullock being this bluebird of sadness, note her paintings, blue garb and blindfold plus she doesn't go outside until her sister forces her out. Finally she accepts there can be happiness, names the children and frees the birds.

He basically said F This I'm going out guns blazing and taking as many of these mf ers with me and they didn't make his death really gruesome like some of the others, so I hate that he passed away, but whoever played that role had to go, so it would be more intense as Sandra would be on her own now to keep two kids alive.

I know its a lil vague but i think its like that because its not really important as to what the monsters really are or came from its more so about the journey sandra bullock takes and the development of her character, the fact of taking away a sense u would normally need and making it the thing that saves you in more ways than one, blind faith is what saved them, learning to hope and open up

It’s more like The Happening. It’s base off a book that came out in 2014.
I like it cause the movie isn’t feeding you everything. In this movie your living it thru her eyes and she isn’t trying to defeat them she is just trying to survive so she wouldn’t have ever known what it actually looks like.

When have people ever been satisfied with how the evil threat looks?
It's better not to show it and feed on the viewers imagination, then show it and have the viewer not buy it. The aliens in a quiet place looked so typically lame that the movie is hard to rewatch for me. If you can design something pratical and scary go ahead, but if your threat shows up looking like a action figure don't.
People wanna know where it came from also. That'd be nice but more than likely it's just an alien or a summoned demon. All I care is that the threat is effective, and that both the viewers and characters are convinced.
All these things would be nice, but most of these people lack the vision and talent to pull it off. They should strive for it, but also be able to recognize their limits.

I saw the birds in the box on the movie (shocker) Bird Box as sort of reference to the cannery in the coal mine. To explain: back in the, like, 1800s coal miners had no tech to detect if chemicals in the air became to toxic and deadly, so to solve this they used canaries, small birds, and put them towards the back of the cave while mining. When the bird died it made a lot of nooce and alerted the miners to leave. They were also good because of ease of transportation. That is most likely where the writers got the inspiration for the bird box concept.

Well, let's be fair: A Quiet Place WAS plenty vague with many of its details. It didn't openly explain the monsters' origins or intentions (aside from killing people). There were some juicy details in the background, but they were still mostly just subtle hints.
But it's perfectly all right to have a limit on the amount of vagueness you can tolerate, and Bird Box was definitely MUCH vaguer than A Quiet Place.
This is the first review of yours that I've watched. I liked it! Interesting, fair, to-the-point, and well-made. I think I will subscribe and watch more. :)

I understand the argument about A Quiet Place already doing what Bird Box did but Bird Box was based off of a book so people can't really say Bird Box copied A Quiet Place. In the unknown of not knowing what the creatures in Bird Box were builds more suspense and anticipation in my opinion. It allowed the characters in the movie to be attacked by their worst fears or tragedies in their lives. That flexibility was key in making Bird Box more dynamic.
