  • A look at oldshool sampling on an Amiga, which I did in the early 90s using an add-on for the Amiga.

    This video has made my day! I owe it all to Octamed. Much love Mr Stabz!

    Awesome! This was totally amazing to watch! Really cool how you blend the oldskool with the new and get a really functional setup, on such minimal gear! Looking quite forward to the follow up video! =D

    Back in the 90’s I used the stereo master sampler and ripped samples from cassette (Walkman) and vinyl with pretty good results. A lot of trial and error before I mastered good quality samples. I went on to use the DSS8+ cart with better results. These days I tend to batch convert my samples on cooledit pro and save them as iff/8svx then putting them up an octave If necessary in OctaMED.

      Was always curious about the DSS and its tracker, was it a better sampler? The biggest problem sampling was the CRT monitor whine noise (game changer after discovering that!), but also bass samples you always got a lot of hiss on them, maybe other samplers were better with this? Converting in would solve those problems. I think i used something called Sound Machine to convert wav files from PC.

    Megamix master was my first sampler, purchased in 1992 if I remember rightly!

    Hi @RaveyStabs, I have been really enjoying your videos as I am trying my hand at some oldskool hardcore.
    I have been looking for the break at 02:47 for a long time. The video you sampled from is no longer on youtube. Do you happen to know the name of the break or where it came from? A link to a Wav would be amazing...

    • @RaveyStabs
      @RaveyStabs  Рік тому +1

      Thanks. Not totally sure about that break, sounds like it's a play on Think (Lyn Collins). A lot of rap artists mashed it up with big kicks and other breaks to get different takes on it so I would think it's probably from somewhere like that. An example is Kid 'N Play Gitting Funky (UK remix) chops it to make the break SL2 sampled for On A Ragga Tip. I should also still have the 8bit sampled break from this video on the Amiga if that's any use.

    I was going to say, recording samples off of youtube? But then I remembered the amiga bitrate :D

      Yes, also most UA-cam vinyl grabs sound better than my well worn vinyl!

  • @AngryBulldogg
    @AngryBulldogg 5 років тому +1

    Ha. I did a similar thing using UA-cam on me phone, had a jack going from phone headphone port to laptop mic port n recorded samples in audacity

    • @RaveyStabs
      @RaveyStabs  5 років тому +2

      Yep I do it a lot! Back in the pre-internet days I had to beg and borrow vinyl, CDs, tapes just to even achieve a modest sample collection!

    Trying to get mine set up again. I downloaded samples using a modem from the internet in 1996. These external hardware items seem to go for stupid prices on eBay for what looks like ridiculously simple circuits. Going to make my one once I figure out the circuits or get someone to photo the PCBs haha ;) - fantastic videos had great fun watching them. Having a muck about with pro tracker on Mac and Buzz while setting the 1200 up.

    I love your channel! Quick question: do you really need an Amiga sampling cartridge for that authentic rough Amiga sound? Or will downsampling 16 bit samples to 8 bit and then using them in Octamed in the Amiga do the trick as well?

    • @RaveyStabs
      @RaveyStabs  4 роки тому

      Good question, not totally sure! 16 bit to 8 should give you better quality especially for high end but still add grunge on playback. I'd imagine doing both sampling and playback would give you most grunge.

    this channel is so cool, I would love to see some caustic 3 tutorials for some early hardcore/gabber stabs and leads.

    • @AngryBulldogg
      @AngryBulldogg 5 років тому

      You can do something similar with audacity n sample some stabs. I done it a while back n lifted some off some owld bouncy techno 12". Sounded a little shit coz i didn't know what the fuck i was doing with sound quality. Trial n error ul get em bang on. Mine were way too loud so ended up with saturation overload

    Yo! Great vids! Do you know if Octamed 4 can be triggered to play a song by MIDI? I record to cassette still and use SMPTE with my SP1200/S950. I have an SMPTE synchroniser that kicks the master seq off via MIDI after listening to the signal on tape. Can I do this Octa?

    • @RunOfTheHind
      @RunOfTheHind 4 роки тому

      Don't worry, just found it in the manual finally, which is like it's written in another language to me! A long road ahead! Thinking of selling the SP1200 (need the £££) and using just the 950 with the Amiga.

    hi mate where can i. get. one of the mega mix things? or something similaR??

    • @RaveyStabs
      @RaveyStabs  5 місяців тому

      Rombo Megamix Master I had, one on ebay UK right now but I'd say look for Technosound Turbo 2 (one on ebay also now) or Microdeal MegaloSound, those do the same but are better since they can work directly in OctaMED too.

      @@RaveyStabs thanks mate where can i get the sd thing you have so i can use existing samples? do i need anything else or just the sd box? could you link me to one please

    • @RaveyStabs
      @RaveyStabs  5 місяців тому

      @@amerism4530 I have a pcmcia Sandisk compact flash (CF) adapter in the Amiga, a 4gb CF card, and a CF usb reader on PC. All quite cheap to get, do remember the setup on Amiga being a bit of a ball ache, but it works quite well when done. Copy files onto card from PC, read on Amiga. Enthusiast territory. If you are new to platform, keep an eye on A600GS coming soon, its going to be around £100 and might just replace my Amiga and make this sort of thing a lot easier with mod cons e.g. over WIFI. Plus OctaMED 8 with a lot more channels.

      @@PaulWoodman83 Funnily enough MIDI is my next planned video. Yeah the samplers are going for quite a bit I notice. If you know electronics basics there is a DIY project (instructions in an old Amiga magazine)
