Hoffman is a legend. I won't ever use any of this, I just appreciate what people do in the demoscene, and I enjoy hearing about it. Thanks for the interesting talk.

Fake sidechain ducking is a lot easier in XM modules, because you can do it with the instrument volume envelope. I have a feeling that FT2/XM was never really explored like ProTracker. Maybe it's because the internal model is much more complex than ProTracker's, and musicians had enough toys to play with even if they just stuck to the "proper" usage of everything.

Everything made sense to me except the part about calculating frequency:
    - take period table from protracker
    - find the required period for destination note
    - Sample Rate = 7093789.2 / (period * 2)
    What is this period table?
When does this process need to be done?

Why did you not use fullscreen 800x600 with Milky? Those are the most usable screen settings imo. Any settings higher than that and the window is too large and the UI is unreasonably small just like in this video...

How could there be "C64 trackers" if The Ultimate Soundtracker was made in 1987 for the Amiga? Actual C64 trackers were made AFTER the Amiga/DOS trackers. He probably meant to say that SID music was programmed on a C64, not on a "C64 Tracker."

Soundmonitor by Chris Hülsbeck (published in the legendary German Commodore user mag "64'er" in 1986) is usually considered to be _the_ original tracker.

It's too bad that the next iteration of the Amiga (Hombre chipset) never came to fruition, as its sound chip was 16 bit and 8 voices, among other things (4, 16 color playfields, 32 bit chunky gfx with 8 bit alpha, etc). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amiga_Hombre_chipset

Acorn did it with their RISC PC range : 16 bit linear, 8 channels (still compatable with the Archie)...
Archie had 8 bit log, 8 channels ... and still Amiga fanboys pretend their machines were the best for sound, what a joke.
A base Archie at 8 Mhz is even able to play S3M files under the desktop.
ARM is power. Mixing is not an issue.
      Acorn is truely innovative technology.
Amiga is ... hype, lame, and faking, unless you had a 68040 30 Mhz+ very expensive accelerator board.
Acorn RISC PC also did it for the graphics (24 bits + alpha), it even had slots for V RAM.
Funny to see Amiga people bought the wrong machines, in reality, when everything they ever wanted was in fact produced by Acorn, from 1987 onwards. (chunky modes, 256 colours, ultra fast processor, great sound, 60 kHz playback of 4 ch MODs, 41 kHz for 8 ch. And with 7 possible stereo positions per channel, not 3 like poor Paula).
Oh yes it was a bit more expensive than C= crap, but it was worth it. Definitively.
Acorn even had the Phoebe ready, fully working (and not just schematics of chipset like C=), when they decided to stop manufacturing computers and focus on other businesses (Btw : Acorn never went bankrupt, contrary to the idiots at C=, who screwed their suppliers).

The Amiga's limit of 4 channels was it's biggest audio flaw. I mean, it was ok for those doing purely music, but for game development you really had to compromise if you wanted sound effects as well. The hard panning was also something I never understood. It wouldn't be so bad if you could change it, or have a 3-point pan system of L/C/R, but drums coming from hard left or right always made me cringe (I listen to MODS in mono). It really needed 6-8 channels with panning - especially the A600 and A1200 which were released seven years after the first Amiga.

@@nebularain3338 According to the guy that designed the Amiga's Paula audio chip, Glenn Keller, he had planned on having 8 voices but didn't have time or space on the chip to add the additional complexity. But even if this is true I never understood why later versions of the Amiga didn't improve on the chip in any meaningful way: No additional voices, no higher fidelity (offering 12 or 16 bit), etc. Not sure why this was the case but it's a shame. I agree about the panning issue.

Clearly by virtue of the fact you have to date 8,901 views of this video its reach is far beyond however many people attended the seminar. This is a good thing by anyone's standards.
In either case, you REALLY don't need a 44 second intro.
