As an Indo-Canadian I cannot understand this fascination of punjabis wanting to live in canada. Most of them are suffering with lack of jobs and unable to speak the language ( English or French) properly . Immigrants who do manage to find a job stays in their bubble, eats only Punjabi food and does not adapt well to the new setting. A lot of crimes committed in Brampton area are by young Punjabi men. Shameful for the entire Indian diaspora there. Sorry, if you do want to move to another country please adapt and understand the ethos of that society. Stop locking up girls , educate everyone and be a law abiding citizen.

Kudos to you for telling the truth! Going to Canada, Australia and New Zealand (USA, UK and Europe are difficult to get into) is a disease that the Punjab has got and the average price that people are willing to pay to go abroad is around Rs 50 lakhs. Imagine if they invest that money in India for some business how much they would be earning? Instead they go to a freezing country, do menial jobs, live with 20 people in a 2 rooms, live in their ghettos, are exploited miserably by their own community people to become bonded labour, drug peddlers, money launderers etc, don't visit home for ages and never talk to a white Canadian!

Here we go again with CHEATING EAST INDIANS who not only CHEAT when they are in Canada for years, but also figure out how to CHEAT to get other EAST INDIANS into Canada faster ....using fake documents rather than gain entry with proper documents.
Canada is now full of CHEATING EAST INDIANS who don't care about CANADA ....don't care about CANADIANS ....and don't care about any CANADIAN LAWS OR RULES.
Most recently, in British Columbia, the "trucking" industry has several companies that are owned by EAST INDIANS. "Driving" a truck is NOT an occupation that requires ANY education OR intelligence. So long as a person knows how to start a truck, fuel it, and drive it on a roadway, these trucking companies will hire ANYONE. Over the period of several years recently, there have been more collisions with bridges/overpasses by trucks that have had loads HIGHER than the HEIGHT CLEARANCES CLEARLY SHOWN ON EACH BRIDGE/OVERPASS. Prior to 2015, a trucking load hitting a bridge/overpass had fundamentally never been hear of before.
In the past TWO YEARS, there have been a couple of dozen "bridge collisions" by ONE TRUCKING COMPANY OWNED BY CHOHAL TRUCKING.....AN EAST INDIAN OWNED TRUCKING COMPANY. The B.C. provincial government finally decided to suspend the B.C. company because this CHOHAL company did not appear to care about this record of collisions which was costing the B.C. taxpayers a lot of money in performing the repairs. Then this CHOHAL company brought in trucks from Alberta. The son of the father, CHOHAL, runs the "ALBERTA DIVISION" OF CHOHAL TRUCKING, AND THE ALBERTA DIVISION WAS NOT SUSPENDED ......SO THESE CHEATING EAST INDIANS DECIDED TO USE THEIR ALBERTA TRUCKS!!!!
THAT'S WHAT YOU CALL CHEATING ......AND IT GIVES THE ENTIRE EAST INDIAN CULTURE THAT LABEL ......CHEATERS. I won't bother explaining both the gangland shootings in the EAST INDIAN CULTURE THAT HAS EAST INDIANS SHOOTING AND KILLING EAST INDIANS IN BROAD DAYLIGHT IN POPULACE AREAS .........NOR WILL I GO INTO AN EXPLANATION OF EAST INDIANS ....IN INDIA .....NOW EXTORTING EAST INDIAN BUSINESS OWNERS IN EASTERN AND WESTERN CANADA.
SO IT APPEARS THIS IS THE EAST INDIAN CULTURE THAT IS NOW PRESENT IN CANADA, WHO IGNORE THE LAWS OF CANADA, PROMOTE ILLEGAL DRUGS IN CANADA, AND THREATEN BUSINESSES IN CANADA.
MAYBE IT IS TIME TO CONSIDER DEPORTING ALL EAST INDIANS WHO HAVE COME TO CANADA IN THE LAST TEN YEARS .....OR LONGER.
CHEATING CAN NOW BE EXPECTED ANY TIME A PERSON IS DEALING WITH AN EAST INDIAN. MIGHT AS WELL ADD FRAUD AND CORRUPTION.

I have literally heard this from a distant relative, they wanted to send their daughter to canada but didn’t wanna spend any money on her, so instead they were looking for a wealthy guy to marry her off with and take care of all her expenses. Similarly guys from wealthy families who are not the brightest and cant speak proper english look for a smart girl and pay her tuition and visa expenses hoping she’ll take them to canada in a year or so. Even though they are real marriages with their families involved and everything, how do you expect a marriage like this to last when it’s essentially more like a business deal? Keeping in mind people grow and change very fast when they move abroad. You wont be the person you were in india after 6 months of living in canada. Many relationships fail when one of the partner moves to another country because of how they’ve changed as a person. So how can you trust that your spouse from an arranged marriage will be there for you after a year?

She held out as long as she could but finally gave in. She told me, her exact words, that if she had a choice, she would have married a blond-haired, blue-eyed Englishman. It was particularly hard for to give in and marry the man her parents forced her to because, despite the fact that she is Punjabi, she's really English in her mind and way of thinking. She's physically beautiful and beautiful on the inside, she's witty, has a charming British accent, and has that amazing sense of humor that most British people have. And the guy she had to marry was dull, antisocial, possessive, controlling, distrustful of people, contemptuous of other people and other races, etc, etc, etc, the complete opposite of her. She used to laugh at him in her mind, and knew that he was a joke, but she had no choice but to stay with him. She made a comment that Indian girls are even pressured into remaining virgins for horrible men like this, men who would never be able to get a woman on their own even if their lives depended on it. Her words. The moment they were married, he used her British passport to get himself officially documented and then he moved her away from her family to the United States where he used his IT training to get a job. They eventually moved here to Canada. Anyway, what he did to her was horrible, so horrible in fact that it still affects me to this day, after all these years. I didn't put any of the details in the comments, initially, because I didn't want to receive a bunch of hate mail, and people would probably not even believe me. It was the saddest, most unfair thing I had ever seen done to another human being. She received no help or support from her in-laws, and, get this guys..... her own parents blamed her!!! One of her brothers', knew that the man was not a good person, and wouldn't even let him in his house when they were still in England, but he couldn't do anything to support his sister because he lived so far away. So, after 18 and half years with this man, and giving him two children, he got rid of her, basically kicking her out of the house. The few friends that she had at that time begged her to not move out of the house, but she was terrified of the guy, so she allowed him to move her out. She had no idea of what the family assets were, what the value of the house was, nothing. She had no idea of how much money they had. Anyway, long story short, we ended up helping her get into a shelter and then into the social assistance program, and it was very sad to watch. During my time with her, I got to know the various institutions here in Toronto that are set up to help women in situations like this, so I got to know some of the stories of the other Indian women who were being helped by these institutions and it's pretty sad, guys. These Indian women are left with nothing and often zero support from their families. Their families often make them feel like they've betrayed the families and culture by reporting the abuse. My Punjabi friend is smart, she's practical, she has that Punjabi business sense, but doesn't know how to use it because she was never taught. She has no sense of individuality and has no concept of personal rights. She knew from the time she was young, taught by her parents, that all she had to learn was to obey, to make good chapatis and moong dal, and clean the house. In some ways, she has the mind and emotional development of a fifteen year old. I mean, even when we visit with her now, I still see no real growth with her, but I understand it because she doesn't understand how the world works and was never taught to be an individual. She was never taught to plan for herself, for her life. I've never seen a more deserving human being, but she is completely incapacitated now by her lack of understanding of the world and of people and, frankly, I think, even though she's only 55 years of age, she just may be too damaged to learn any new skills. Her two daughters, now married and with children of their own, are living the high life, while this poor woman is on social assistance and working like a slave cleaning other people's houses.
So, I don't know, guys.... I don't like to see anyone kill themselves, that's true, but if Indian women, or any women, are figuring out a way to get out of that kind of soul-killing life like my Punjabi friend has endured, then I'm with the Indian women on this one. I know the issue is much more complex, but I choose to side with the Indian women. However, people who left comments here- Shivan Unitholl, Abhisek Das, and Harikrishnan D, have summarized it pretty well. Marriage seems to be a business, in India, and the women seem to be the ones who get the short end of the stick, either way.

Not being rude but in New zealand we have had a big problem in the past with punjabi men coming to my country marrying overweight insecure woman for residency. After they get it they leave them go back to punjab and marry the woman the family picks and then begin the process of bringing the whole extended family here. Our immigration laws are so very strict now it's hard to get residency even if they have a baby born to a kiwi woman. It's hard for anyone to get residency unless u have millions of dollars. And since arranged marriage is kind of like a life long job that you can't get out of, the attitude towards the spouse is acquisitional -- how much dowry will I get if I marry this person? will I get a visa if I marry this person ? will I get a green card ? Indian men have been abandoning their wives for decades. like the lady says in India in any circumstance it is only the women who are blamed because India is culturally misogynistic. I have lived in the US and I have seen how young men coming from India literally salivate on white skin and chase after the women in the first world (whether they are married with a wife in India or single). As long as India continues to hang on its outdated and draconian cultural values this will continue to happen. As soon as a woman does what men have been doing for decades and decades she instantly become EVIL. Can you just imagine the thousands of women who have been suffering in silence further traumatized by the social stigma of being abandoned by their husbands by a culture that preys on women treating women like objects and personal possessions completely disregarding that women are human beings with human rights. When it happens to a man it is unacceptable and its out in the media, when it happens to a women she has to hide away from society. I say either way it is an evil practice. India should do away with old draconian cultural practices and stop living like the frog in the well. Please treat women like human beings and not objects and men please grow up. At some stage the tables had to turn. India has to make cultural changes to move into the 20th century not desperately hold on to OLD OLD DRACONIAN CULTURAL PRACTICES.

As someone who lives abroad (without duping anyone), I do wish to say how the status of women in India is a big contributor to women ‘leaving’ people behind. There exists so much patriarchy in the country, which also gets internalised by you and other women. Things like “how will you be able to doXYZ alone?” Is a question commonly asked when you suggest you’re thinking about doing something (like moving to a new city) deemed perfectly acceptable for men. The western world is completely different for women shackled by patriarchy as you have more say and agency over your life-something you never even knew you could have in India. But, of course, there are people who label these women “open minded” and “characterless”. Is it right to have a contractual marriage? No. Is it right to abandon people and drive them to suicide? No. However, we also do need to understand the underlying issues.

They probably would have gladly migrated to Canada and allowed her to not only be the primary bill payer but also to be the main cook and cleaner like a servant. Likewise , the son was also a victim. Whatever a woman do in her life is for her own selfish interest. She is 100x more selfish than a man. A woman is a comfort seeking being. She will always gravitate towards were there is pleasure, comfort and convenience. This is why women choose rich men over other men. Men need to accept this reality and act wisely. This also tells me why dowry came into existence in India.

The big cities which have jobs are polluted, crowded, unsafe and unhygienic. My cousin who works in Delhi has blue eyes and gets stared at by random men. So many men have acted inappropriately towards her and her boss doesn’t care. It’s absolutely deplorable. India will never be a superpower because of this. Why do Punjabis have such a zeal towards settling abroad ? As someone has said earlier in the comments, India isn't a war zone, and neither we are a famine-stricken country facing a humanitarian crisis. Ethnic pride of them are not going to solve practical issues. What's this with being so much ethnocentric and regionalist people ? This is with some other states too, this "ethnic victimhood" and fake persecution complex thing. Even in this comments section, some are vociferously abusing against those who are offering constructive cristicism, _"you BIMARU states have no buddhi"_ or some long well settled in UK lambasting and despising India for being third/fourth/fifth/sixth.... zillionth world country, as if their own origin comes from Antartica and not India. An increasing number of problems and having little solutions, laughing claims emerge that _"the Government of India is deliberately keeping Punjab backwards"_ and _"India never cared about Punjab."_ Folks are gonna call me communal, sanghi, and another 5000 such fancy terms, but in my observation, I've seen such wrath more in Sikh compared to their Hindu counterparts. As far as the Sikh diaspora is concerned, they absolutely *HATE* India, nothing else. If immigrating abroad isn't helping and neither blaming others is, then a fair introspection will help better, won't it ? There is very myth in Punjab that UP and Biharis are taking their jobs, "polluting" Punjab, they are being called derogatory terms like "Bhaiyyas" despite the fact that census data shows no such thing, just like this bogus claim of mass conversion to Christianity in Punjab. How long blaming GoI, Ambani, Adani, X organization, Y community will help ? And I'm pretty sure that even on this comment too, I'd be getting tonnes of similar remarks, dozens may come to inveigh me. I'm myself from a _"Bimaru"_ state, but at least I don't have the fallacies that there is a conspiracy against my state, I don't suffer from this regionalism and ethnocentrism, I don't think it's all a fault of others, because the truth is that it's my own unaware citizens who are keeping the state backwards.
This may sound harsh, but doesn't Punjab seem to be a moving towards being a _"bimaru"_ state itself too ? Apologies in advanced if somebody is offended.

The same way the bimaru states should learn from other states. I am not against regionalism everything in moderation is necessity. But with the kind of anger, fear and division this pandemic has resulted in all we see is people blaming each other.
