  • The Official Trailer for The Man Who Knew Infinity - in cinemas April 8 - directed by Matthew Brown and starring Dev Patel, Jeremy Irons, Devika Bhise, Stephen Fry and Toby Jones.
Colonial India, 1913. Srinivasa Ramanujan (Dev Patel) is a 25-year-old shipping clerk and self-taught genius, who failed out of college due to his near-obsessive, solitary study of mathematics. Determined to pursue his passion despite rejection and derision from his peers, Ramanujan writes a letter to G. H. Hardy (Jeremy Irons), an eminent British mathematics professor at Trinity College, Cambridge. Hardy recognises the originality and brilliance of Ramanujan’s raw talent and despite the scepticism of his colleagues, undertakes bringing him to Cambridge so that his theories can be explored.

With no formal education in mathematics, Ramanujan revolutionized several branches of maths and was considered the same level of genius as Newton and Gauss. Unfortunately the world lost this great genius too early at the age of 32.

+chaoticdays Arguably, from the sheer dimension of mathematics, Ramanujan was probably the most naturally gifted and intuitive mathematician to ever live. And such a shame that, today, such genius would be laughed at even more thoroughly than it was in Ramanujan's day.

I am reminded of what Prof.Michio Kaku said about Ramanjum
"Srinivasa Ramanujan was the strangest man in all of mathematics, probably in the entire history of science. He has been compared to a bursting supernova, illuminating the darkest, most profound corners of mathematics, before being tragically struck down by tuberculosis at the age of 33... Working in total isolation from the main currents of his field, he was able to rederive 100 years’ worth of Western mathematics on his own. The tragedy of his life is that much of his work was wasted rediscovering known mathematics. "..that really takes 2+ lifetimes for a man to achieve.

I think doctor vashishtha Narayan (mathematician) who challenged Albert Einstein's theory of relativity (e = mc square) and gauss law is highly underrated. Unfortunately, his wife tore his notes (where he wrote notes to disprove those 2 laws) and he got mental disease and his wife divorced him and unfortunately he died in a government hospital due to lac of proper doctors. ( He also worked in nasa). If he would be alive, he would have completed his research and get recognition like other great mathematicians

Excellent and worth watching. It doesn't matter what caste you are born with. That is still imperfect and countless rebirths await even the highest caste. You can still get demoted if humility isn't learned. Ramanujan was a kind and humble spirit, not meant to stay in this level for long. He must surely be at a deity level as we speak.

Their was no upper low in these Caste.. because of degradation in society, classiesm rich poor this upper lower arised in society.. technically all caste r assigned different type of jobs ..no one higher or lower..it is we humans who created this low upper.. because it is tendency of rich successful person to suppress poor person..

India has given the world a lot in Mathematics and Science, the present number system (0 to 9), algebra, trigonometry, geometry,
calculus, some of the earliest works of Mathematics come from India, even Physics, the theory of atoms, known in sanskrit as "parmanu", the notion of living things as small as bacteria existed in India long before the Germ Theory, known is sanskrit is ("kitanu")
lots of innovation by India gave the world a kick-start in the fields of Math, Science, Physics, Biology, and the list goes on
if it wasn't for India, the world would be far far behind than where it is today
in-fact, the industrial revolution was entirely funded by money, gold, and knowledge looted from India during the British Colonial Rule over India
if it wasn't for India, the industrial revolution would have occurred far late than it did, and we would all be living in 19th century technology right now

Ramanujan was a pure genius. His mathematical knowledge was way ahead of his time. Great to see a film being made on him.
But, i don't understand why people are bashing Bollywood here. Sure BW has its share of chunk garbage movies but films like Neerja and Airlift (both based on real life events) reaffirm my faith that good stories will eventually find their way onto the celluloid.

My hearty thanks to Prof. Hardy . Undoubtedly Ramanujan was genius but without his help I don't think Ramanujan would get credit for his work . For example , J. C. Bose invented Radio wave and also demonstrated to public before G . Markny but he didn't get the patent . Being an Indian again I thank to Prof. Hardy and Warner Brothers too for creating such brilliant cinema . Our Indian film industry won't make such movie .
